Taking the antibiotic Keflex (500 mg) for 14 days will this affect my birth control? I have been prescribed to take Keflex 4 times a day for 14 days. I am also on birth control (Yasmin). Will this anitbiotic affect my birth control? And if it does how long should I wait to have any sexual relations when I do finish my Keflex?
If no one knows does anyone know where I can find out this information online? (My doctors office is closed today or I would have called)
Thanks everyone!
Thanks!
heidi_seven replied: "Generally, antibiotics will decrease the effectiveness of birth control. You can call your local pharmacy for more information."
Scott B replied: "Heide is correct, usually antibiotics reduce the efficency of birth control. Call your pharmacy (or any pharmacy) and ask to speak with the pharmacist. Ask them, they will be able to tell you."
Has anyone been prescribed Keflex 500 mg during pregnancy? I was prescribed this antibiotic for an infection from a previous root canal. I know that an infection can be bad for baby but I am so skeptical about taking this medication during my last trimester even though it was approved by my OB and dentist today. I am 32 weeks prego.
babydoc38 replied: "I'm only 9 weeks along and I was just prescribed this for a bladder infection. I think we are safe!"
Melissa S replied: "I have only taken zithromax(also for a tooth infection). If your dentist and ob said it's safe it should be fine. Anything category A or B is generally ok to use during pregnancy.
Cephalexin(keflex) is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby.

mystic_eye_cda replied: "In general I stick to old antibiotics. There is way more research and decades of women taking things like amoxicillian. And the few times I have take "new" antibiotics they haven't worked as well.
Fetal Risk
* No fetal adverse effects in animals.
* Crosses human placenta.
* No adequate human data but suggested possible associaition with cardiovascular defects and oral clefts in first trimester exposure."

how many keflex 500? i have 5 keflex 500 pills how many will it take to kill infection from a molar that was pulled. the dentist gave me amoxicillian but it didn't stop the pain after 4 days can i put the 2 together and take them
johnie replied: "do not mix the antibiotic. if you continue to have pain after the tooth was pulled, it could mean you have a condition called dry socket and a dressing with medicine needs to be placed in the socket by your dentist. other cause of tooth pain after extraction is incomplete removal of tooth or inadequate pain medication"
CDA~NY replied: "Keep taking the Amox since it's to get rid of the infection.... and it's not a painkiller. You may have a dry socket, so get an appointment with your dentist to have the area checked out.... and don't take any of the Keflex.
Feel better."
Keflex 500mg and Birth Control Pill? I need to get a root canal, and my dentist prescribed me Keflex 500. I also take oral contraceptives.....he didn't say anything about it affecting the effectiveness of my BCP, but I just remembered that some antibiotics do that. My husband and I had unprotected sex yesterday, and it was during my period...do you think that I could get pregnant???
I started taking the pills on Thurs...
ametcalf2007 replied: "If you didn't take the Keflex yet than I wouldn't worry too much. Call a pharmacist before you take it and ask if there is an alternative that can be used.
If you already took both than there is a possibility that you could become pregnant (period or no period). I doubt it though. If you only took the Keflex once or even a couple of times I don't think it will matter that much. But like I said call a pharacist (like at Walgreen's, they're very helpful) just to make sure.
Here is a website that I looked on to find out Keflex. It's also a great tool if you have any drug or medical questions!
I wish you luck!!! (root canals are no fun...)"
Has anyone been on Keflex or know some common side effects? I was recently prescribed to 500 mg. of Keflex 4 times a day and usually 2 times a day of Keflex is pretty strong for me so I naturally haven't been feeling up to par because of the medicine. It is now my 6th day on the medicine and my abdominal cavity and back are KILLING me. It is like that hollow feeling that your body gets when you have a bad case of the flu. I have no other symptoms, so I was wondering if this is a common side effect of a strong dose of Keflex.
greeneyedgurl1234444 replied: "haha the first time i read this i thought u were talking about kleenx. i was like wtf? people get prescribed with tissues?"
Pam replied: "When I go to have dental work I have to take 2000 mg of Keflex an hour before being seen because of heart problems.
Keflex font sizeAAASIDE EFFECTS
Gastrointestinal Onset of pseudomembranous colitis may occur during or after antibacterial treatment. (See WARNINGS.) Nausea and vomiting have been reported rarely. The most frequent side effect has been diarrhea. It was very rarely severe enough to warrant cessation of therapy. Dyspepsia, gastritis, and abdominal pain have also occurred. As with some penicillins and some other cephalosporins, transient hepatitis and cholestatic jaundice have been reported rarely.
Hypersensitivity Allergic reactions in the form of rash, urticaria, angioedema, and, rarely, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis have been observed. These reactions usually subsided upon discontinuation of the drug. In some of these reactions, supportive therapy may be necessary. Anaphylaxis has also been reported.
Other reactions have included genital and anal pruritus, genital moniliasis, vaginitis and vaginal discharge, dizziness, fatigue, headache, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, arthralgia, arthritis, and joint disorder. Reversible interstitial nephritis has been reported rarely. Eosinophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and slight elevations in AST and ALT have been reported.
In addition to the adverse reactions listed above that have been observed in patients treated with Keflex, the following adverse reactions and altered laboratory tests have been reported for cephalosporin class antibiotics:
Adverse Reactions Fever, colitis, aplastic anemia, hemorrhage, renal dysfunction, and toxic nephropathy.
Several cephalosporins have been implicated in triggering seizures, particularly in patients with renal impairment when the dosage was not reduced (see INDICATIONS AND USAGE and PRECAUTIONS, General). If seizures associated with drug therapy should occur, the drug should be discontinued. Anticonvulsant therapy can be given if clinically indicated.
Altered Laboratory Tests Prolonged prothrombin time, increased BUN, increased creatinine, elevated alkaline phosphatase, elevated bilirubin, elevated LDH, pancytopenia, leukopenia, and agranulocytosis.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Metformin In healthy subjects given single 500 mg doses of cephalexin and metformin, plasma metformin mean Cmax and AUC increased by an average of 34% and 24%, respectively, and metformin mean renal clearance decreased by 14%. No information is available about the interaction of cephalexin and metformin following multiple doses of either drug.
Although not observed in this study, adverse effects could potentially arise from co-administration of cephalexin and metformin by inhibition of tubular secretion via organic cationic transporter systems. Accordingly, careful patient monitoring and dose adjustment of metformin is recommended in patients concomitantly taking cephalexin and metformin.
Probenecid As with other -lactams, the renal excretion of cephalexin is inhibited by probenecid.
Drug / Laboratory Test Interactions
As a result of administration of Keflex, a false-positive reaction for glucose in the urine may occur. This has been observed with Benedicts and Fehlings solutions and also with Clinitest tablets.
Just put Keflex into your search engine and you can pick what you want to read."
kmv replied: "I hope you called and let your Dr know that you are having this symptom, (if you are having diarrhea, especially if there's any blood or mucus in it you need to call ASAP). I think this site will help you identify some common side effects but since we don't know why you were being treated with this particular antibiotic then it's hard to say if this is a side effect or a related issue to your current diagnosis. Either way it's alway better to be safe then sorry, call and let the Dr know what's going on.
Here's that site:http://www.drugs.com/Cephalexin/index.html"
Rebekah G replied: "Yes, it can be really hard on your stomach. Drink a lot of water!"
sunshine13 replied: "Keflex is strong...Drink lots of water!! I got bladder infections from it!! So whenever I get sick now...I take Cipro!! You might want to switch depending what is wrong with you. Keflex is a very powerful antibiotic and some people cant handle it...like me for one. Just keep hydrated...until you speak to your doctor. Oh make sure you eat alot before you take it. Hope you feel better!!"
matt p replied: "pam has given you alot of the best information you need. rxlist is a good info spot. to get the complete coverage on the medicine go to. the "Physicians' Desk Reference" is the best book available and, of course, the one that most doctors/physicians use."
brandi m replied: "If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Keflex and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately:
an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; hives; or a rash);
rash, redness, or itching;
severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea;
mucous or blood in the stool; or
unusual bleeding or bruising.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Keflex and talk to your doctor if you experience
mild nausea or diarrhea, or
a yeast infection of the mouth or vagina.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome."
jdoc_us replied: "You may have bacterial enterocolitis-see your doc asap or go to the ER"
how do you know when your allergic to cephalexin ? it is cephalexin (keflex) 500 mg.how do you know when your allergic and what is the symtoms?
versantly replied: "symptoms vary so inform your doctor."
cali_girl919 replied: "its an antibiotic so I don't think you can per say be allergic, but some side effects of it are like diarrhea, dizziness, headache, upset stomach. perhaps if you are taking it without any food in your stomach, try to eat something small with it if you are experiencing upset stomach it will help to stop that symptom. if you are having these side effects and you feel horrible, i suggest talking to your doctor about giving you an alternative antibiotic. hope that helps :)"
Mama Mia replied: "Allergic reactions from Keflex can begin with itching, rash, hives, diarrhea, tightening of the chest, swelling of the lips and coughing and increase to severe coughing and closure of your airway. If you think you are having an allergic reaction call your doctor and don't take anymore until you have spoken ."
