what side effect did you get from accutane? i am so scared bout' taking accutane. i have read all of the side effects and dont want any of them to happen to me. i was just wondering if you have taken accutane, what side effect you got.

Eoin D replied: "Very dry skin, especially lips and the inside of my nose. Also mood swings. In the end it was well worth it for the relief of my acne."

Meg replied: "I had the dryness and after the first month, my cholesterol jumped 60+ points. I had to go low-fat, low-cholesterol with my diet for the remaining four months of my treatment. I'm not going to lie, that sucked big time. That being said, knowing what I know now, I would have repeated my Accutane experience. My skin, although it didn't clear up as much as I would have liked, is SO much better. My experience with Accutane has given me so much confidence. (And those months of eating low-fat, low-cholesterol ultimately improved my eating habits...although I still enjoy all of my favorites!)"

Accutane side effect question for females? Have you ever been on accutane and suffered any sexual side effects? if so, have you found anything that resolved your issues?

Is blood in your urine while on accutane a common side effect? I am almost finished my third month on accutane. I have been doing great on it except the past day and a half i have been urinating blood. Is this a common side effect or is something wrong? Im probably going to call my derm tomorrow but I just don't want him to take me off of the medicine after all this work. It has done wonders for me and to have to stop it in the middle would suck =(

Are people with a history of depression more at risk of severe Accutane side effects? I'm 24 and have a history of bad depression in the past (it runs in the family). I've read about Accutane and that it can cause suicidal depression. Does the fact that I have a history of depression make me more likely to suffer these types of side effects?

Susan S replied: "Quite possibly. You should be seeing a mental health professional weekly when starting Accutane."

prrtnpnk replied: "If you think you're having some kind of allergic reaction go see your Dr. because it's the weekend I suggest the ER. Go go now!"

juliettavirgo replied: "Hehe. Yeah, mine got really really dry about 3 or 4 weeks into it but that was over 10 years ago. Here's something fun, I still have overly dry skin and my eyes are so dry I still can't wear contacts for long periods of time even though I could before I was on it. And, don't let it make you all crazy depressed either. Do yourself a favor and buy some carmex and slather those puckers often. They will still be chapped as all get out but you'll get used to it. And when you get off the tane, you'll never have a zit again. Oh and to answer your question, it differs for everyone but mine were at the worst mid treatment and I don't remember if they really got better until I got off it."

earthycate replied: "I just recently got off acutane . Yeah, the dryness is extremely annoying. The only time it worsens is in the winter months and if you don't properly moisturize your skin. Just make sure you use a face lotion for sensitive skin and apply it as often as you need it. Also, always carry a good chapstick on you. However, don't apply it too much or your lips will get cakey. Remember to use plenty of SPF or you will burn. I know it seems like it sucks now but it IS worth it in the end. No matter how annoyed you get with the dryness don't stop taking the medicine. I get compliments on my skin all the time now. I used to never get them. Having clear skin has given me so much more self confidence. By the way, I was off the medicine for about two days and my dry lips were gone! Just remember the final picture and it will make it all worthwhile."

baby_nyago replied: "I JUST GOT OFF ACCUTANE YESTERDAY!! I was in accutane for five months and these are the side effects: A LOT of dry lips, dry skin, dry hair. This goes all the way until you finish the treatment. I still have dry skin, lips, and hair...but in the next few days my skin, lips, hair will become normal. For the skin, use LOTS of moisturizer... Any moisturizer works, but don't use any Neutrogena, Clean and Clear, ProActiv, etc. Because you are not doing anything to the pimples from disappearing, you are reversing the process....Use other brands (non-acne). A GOOD Moisturizer that I like is Burt Bees milk body lotion. It's really good. The Body Shop has good moisturizers for very dry skin!! Use sunscreen on your body and face every day!! My doctor recommended me SPF 90 (it is called HelioCare gel because your skin is VERY sensitive at this point, you need to protect your face from having spots in your face due to the pimples that are drying out and disappearing). It is a good product because it is non-greasy.. For the lips use a lot of chapstick and before you go to bed, make sure that you put Vaseline on your lips. This will help your lips to become moisturized through the night. When you wake up, your lips will be very smooth!! MY SKIN LOOKS AMAZING!!! Good luck :)"

I know accutane has side effects, can one side effect be a dried up anus? My daughter took it for about 2 months back in 2005.She complains that every time she has a bowel movement it is painful and usually bleeds she has also had tears in her anus in the past.Do you think that region of her body is permanantly damaged because of the accutane

cooker_upper1 replied: "Did you check the side effects? Is 'drying out' one of them? Many drugs will dry out your body. The long term effects are not apparent until its too late. If you want help, drink Mona Vie. This is a juice mixture especially for digestive problems. It will soften the stool and help her with the problem. After a while, the bleeding will stop and she will be healed up."

AkaleiLae replied: "Accutane is definetly known for "drying out" your system . It is a very VERY harsh drug and the side effects are endless. This drug can stay in your system for a long time, it just depends on the person. I have known people that have said the side effects stayed with them for 6 months and others 2 years. This drug should only be used as a last resort for the worst kind of acne but even then i wouldnt reccomend it. She should talk to a doctor about this."

Are headaches a normal side effect of accutane? I've been on accutance for about a month now and every once in a while i'll get horrible headaches. The very first one i got i had to leave school because i felt like my head was going to explode. My doctor said its normal, but the nurse said i shouldn't be getting any headaches. I was just wondering if that's normal?

leavingsite ms lo. replied: "Headache is a side effect of Accutane. It is not necessarily so, but can be. It is not abnormal to have a headache from Accutane. It is listed as one of the things that can result from it affecting the CNS. All drugs have side effects. Two people can react entirely differently to the same drug. If you start having other symptoms call the doctor immediately, or go in. I don't know where you are, but watch the sun. Are you taking it all in one dose. Are you taking it with food. Try two doses, with food if the doctor says ok. I hope you are not using astringents on your skin, or hot water. The more you strip your skin of oil, the harder it will work to produce oil, the more your pores will be clogged. More zits. Easy does it. Tepid water. Hands away from face, don't pick;. Keep your hands clean. Wash hair, and change pillow case often. Don't scrub your face really hard, lather with clean hands, rinse will, pat try couple times a day. Gentle. That cannot hurt. If it does, go back to what you did.Drink plenty of water if you can tolerate it, and eat fruits and veggies. Put a little round band aid over that zit instead of picking it If you do it at night after washing your face, it may be popped by am. Keep talking to your doctor about the Accutane."

Accutane side effect, strange chest pain. help please? I was on accutane about 2 years ago now, and after a move and an overload of stress, my skin got worse again after about a year. So now, I've been on it again for a week yesterday, and im on the generic, claravis(which probably has nothing to do with it). I didnt have any side effects at all last time, but just my usual back pain was a little worse, nothing that really bothered me. This time, 3 days ago, i noticed that i was having chest pain, and its not in my lungs or inside, but instead feels like the chest bones and muscles are pushing on each other and aching. It is sensitive when i change positions especially and its just a really annoying, touchy pain. I called the pharmacy until i can talk to my doctor tomorrow, and they said to keep taking it. Im just afraid because ive heard that you need to stop if you are having chest pain. Im not sure what kind of chest pain they mean in the list of side effects . I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this and what they would do. thank you.

Medic106 replied: "I took Accutane before and all I experienced was weakness and some back pain. I would definately stop taking it until you see your doctor. Especially if you say the warning on the drug specifically says stop taking this if you have chest pain. Chest pain is never a good thing. The doctor might need to adjust your dose or put you on a different medication. Don't risk your health over it; stop until you can see a doctor."

Are the Accutane Side Effects Really True? I'm 16 and i'm about to go on accutane and i was just wondering if all of the side effects are true or if they just say it because someone experienced it while they were taking accutane. I've heard that it causes depression, lower sex drive, lowers pleasure towards a sport that you once loved (i play basketball so i don't want that to happen), hair loss, joint pains, dizziness, and many more. I was just wondering if you all knew which of these were true and which of these are myths.

Somebody else replied: "They are all possible side effects, but there is no guarantee that any of them will happen to you. Everyone's body is different and there's really no way to accurately predict what the side effects for a certain medication will be on you until you take it. Even people in the same family can have vastly different reactions to a medication. If you start noticing any of these side effects then you should talk to your doctor immediately to see if anything can be done. Fortunately, Accutane is generally taken for only a short period of time, and once you stop the side effects will go away. Be happy that this isn't something you have to be on for the rest of your life."

margie k replied: "My friends two daughters went on accutane and had a myriad of side effects - they had to be treated for depression, did not want to do much but sleep, had severely dry skin and cracked lips all the time, and couldn't go out in the sun ( we live near the beach). After all that their skin didn't improve that much. A friend of mine, male, took it and was fine, had no side effects, and his skin cleared up beautifully. So each person is going to have a different experience."

Patti H replied: "My daughter has been on it for about 5 weeks and so far we have only experienced chapped lips. If she puts Vaseline on them before bed, they are pretty good the next day. She is enjoying that her hair is not greasy anymore. No depression or anything like that."

Curing Dry Skin Side Effect from ACCUTANE? I'm starting my first round of Accutane in a few days and I'm trying to prepare for the side effects such as the dry skin and lips. What are the best facial lotions and lip treatments to help ease the dryness? I also prefer my facial lotions to feel light, not sticky like certain lotions ( I experienced this with Cetaphil and Purpose) In additon, if you have ever taken Accutane, what were your personal experiences? I'm sort of nervous because of the initial breakouts and all of the side effects but I sure am looking forward to clear skin! Thanks!

versantly replied: "let your dermatologist know about the side effect and follow his/her advice for treatment."

Richard B replied: "You should talk this over with your doctor to make sure that whatever you use is safe to use while you're taking the Accutane."

Angie replied: "I don't use Accutane, but I combat my dry skin with Neutrogena moisturizer. Give it a go."

workitout replied: "definitly vaseline for the lips its the best, nothing medicated like carmex-that will burn! and i was going to reccomend cetaphil face wash... but for face lotions i like neutrogena oil free moisture-combination skin i think its super light , not thick at all and leaves a good smooth silky finish, but it will depend on the amount of dryness your experiencing you might want to seek out a more intensive moisture lotion, ive also liked clinique, and eucerin's aquaphor for the extreme dryness! good luck!"

Molly6969 replied: "The main side effect is dry lips, mine started getting dry about 2 weeks into it. The best thing to use for your lips is Aquaphor, its the only thing that works. I have not had a problem with dry skin yet, but I have only been on it for a month. So far no initial break outs, I think it varies with each person, but my skin seems more sensitive than before."

Kimberly R replied: "The only solution to dry skin is to moisturize. Make sure you look at the label and see that it is oil-free, and avoid creams and stick to lotions - they are lighter."
