Does the antidepressant Wellbutrin have negative side effects? Weight gain? Insomnia? I'm thinking about asking my physician for some. Thank you.

HearKat replied: "http://www.wellbutrin-xl.com/ "WELLBUTRIN XL is not for everyone. There is a risk of seizure with WELLBUTRIN XL which increases with higher doses. Taking more than 450 mg/day increases the chance of serious side effects. Dont use it if youve had a seizure or eating disorder, or if you abruptly stop using alcohol or sedatives. Dont take with MAOIs, or medicines that contain bupropion. When used with a nicotine patch or alone, there is a risk of increased blood pressure, sometimes severe. To reduce risk of serious side effects, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems. Other side effects may include weight loss, dry mouth, nausea, difficulty sleeping, dizziness, sore throat, constipation, or flatulence. "WELLBUTRIN XL is approved only for adults 18 years and over. In some children and teens, antidepressants increase suicidal thoughts or actions. Whether or not you are taking antidepressants, you or your family should call the doctor right away if you have worsening depression, thoughts of suicide, or sudden or severe changes in mood or behavior, especially at the beginning of treatment or after a change in dose (see Medication Guide: What is important information I should know and share with my family about taking antidepressants?)." I took it without any significant physical side-effects, my already high libido was not effected, and I did not gain or lose weight (I had hoped it would help me lose because I have a history of compulsive eating). However, my one and only suicide attempt in a lifetime of depression occurred while taking it. Of course, I was taking the drug because I was severely depressed, so I can't say whether the pill was just ineffective for my depression, or whether it made it worse. It certainly didn't help."

Hooney replied: "I have been on wellbutrin and i didn't have any negative side effects, but everyone is different. So talk to your doctor about it."

heyjude replied: "Try St. John's Wort. It is a herbal remedy available in most health foodstores. I tried it. It really helped and there were no nasty side effects. I wouldn't touch prescribed antidepressants with a bargepole."

lil southern girl replied: "I have a friend who took it for a while. She completely lost interest in sex while on it - probably because it made it nearly impossible to climax while taking it. And you cannot abruptly stop taking it, you have to be weaned off it. People who have tried to quit it cold-turkey have had suicidal episodes until it was all out of their system. My friend says she will never take it or anything like it ever again."

Go_Know_Thyself replied: "Yes it does. They ALL do!! So consider that fact before starting on anything that you will eventually grow a dependency on, that WILL have to be changed eventually or you will have to be weaned off of as none of them let you go without a fight...Often taking a slight condition and making it 10 times worse. Once you introduce a psych med into your system you will need something to get by once it begins to work and they ALL have side effects and they ALL lose their effectiveness over time and have to be changed to something else eventually and/or the dose increased gradually ... Usually right after they actually begin to work for you, you are forced to change to something else and get used to a new drug all over again... And since they are all different and no one really understands how ANY of them actually work. It is a hit and miss situation. It is a vicious cycle that you are better off not starting. Get therapy instead. I call Wellbutrin the "Enabling Drug." If you are anorexic, bulemic, obsessive compulsive, an alcoholic or drug addict, suffer from PTSS... Basically, it makes it easier for you to starve yourself to death, throw up, Drink, give in to self harming urges and hurt yourself worse basically... Lotta good that is to anyone... Read the side effects in the answer below... This is why it warns you not to take it if you have this or that."

missmain85 replied: "What is Wellburtin -Wellbutrin is an antidepressant medication. -Wellbutrin is used to treat major depressive disorder and seasonal affective disorder. -At least one brand of bupropion (Zyban) is used to help people stop smoking by reducing cravings and other withdrawal effects. Wellbutrin is not suitable for -Those with epilepsy or a seizure disorder -Those who have had, or still do have an eating disorder -Those taking another form of bupropion (the generic name for Wellbutrin, also found in Zyban the drug used to help people stop smoking) -Those who have recently stopped using Alcohol or seditives -Those who have taking an MAOI in the last 14 days Some side effects +Severe Side effect - Some have argued that there can be an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior at the start of treatment with an antidepressant medication, especially if you are 18 years of age or younger. Contact your doctor if you have any of the following side effects, especially if they are new symptoms or if they get worse: mood changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, agitation, aggressiveness, severe restlessness, mania (mental and/or physical hyperactivity), or thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself. -It can increase the risk of a seizure, especially when taken with Alcohol or other forms of bupropion -Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. -Stop using Wellbutrin and call your doctor at once if you have a seizure (convulsions) or fast, uneven heartbeats. +Continue taking Wellbutrin and talk to your doctor if you have any of these less serious side effects: -headache or migraine; -sleep problems (insomnia); -nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth; -confusion, dizziness, agitation, tremors (shaking); -appetite changes, weight loss or gain; -mild itching or skin rash, increased sweating; -loss of interest in sex. See the final like for patients comments on the drink Good luck Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome."

iwill replied: "NO SEX DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you coulda paraded the chipendales and a few hooter girls in front of me and i would have told them to move i had stuff to do.ive always had an extremely high sex drive (5.times a week) but it totally went away. Needless to say my husband took me to the doctor and I got PAXIL. I LOVE IT. i have more energy. no more panic attacks or depression, sleep good and still have my healthy sex drive. The only side affect is I drink more so my mouth doesnt get dry. GOOD LUCK!"

Mike J replied: "yes yes yes yes. It's supposed to help with weight gain, and it's supposed to help with mania, but it just made everything worse. I personally had a bad experience with Wellbutrin."

PhD. P replied: "YES!!! YES!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!! "

Dude replied: "DO NOT listen to Go_Know_'s explanation it is ridiculous. The recommendation that you do not take wellbutrin if you recently stopped abusing alcohol/drugs, eating disorders or any of the other reasons mentioned is because going into withdrawal symptoms while taking wellbutrin may increase the risk of having a seizure. NOT BECAUSE IT MAKES IT EASIER TO ABUSE SUCH THINGS. Wellbutrin does not "enable" you to do anything. Infact consuming any alcohol while on wellbutrin is highly discouraged because it greatly increases the risk of seizure. (alcohol is a downer people who suffer from depression should not be using anyway) Do not listen to such UN-educated theories, take the advice of your doctor. Insomnia is a side effect. Weight gain is not, weight loss is actually a side effect."

darlene793 replied: "I"m not reading this off a bottle or anything, but I tried welbutrin and it gave me tremors. My (for instance) right arm would just suddenly move," like snap" move ten inches. Scarey if you ask me. But then drugs act differently on different people"

loonygirl46 replied: "I haven't had any side effects. I think you should ask your physician for it."

Patientsville P replied: "http://www.sideeffectshome.com/medication/wellbutrin_side_effects.htm"

Sam S replied: "For me i lost my sex drive (i dumped my girlfriend of 12 years for the reason of thinking i was homosexual) I got tremors really bad and i lost all appetite but that is just me"

I wanted others personal experience because the doctor just started me on it today. i was wondering also if it had any affects of weight changes? i am taking for depression not to quit smoking. by the way how does it make a person quit.

Better Advice from HJ replied: "I had a loved one who used it for a short time- it didn't seem to work as well for him as some other types of meds, but everyone is different."

Autumn replied: "my dad had to take it to stop smoking and it worked pretty good."

marie replied: "you will have to see for yourself. everyone has a different reaction to medication. i used it and it help me. hope you do well with it."

Sandra C replied: "I tried for a week but I have a high allergy to it and broke out in hives so can't use no more good luck"

noitall replied: "I used it to try to quit smoking. It didn't help. Also when I was on it I woke up at 4 every morning. Wide awake and couldn't get back to sleep. But that was just my experience. It may be different for others."

jennyve25 replied: "Well its a great way to quit smoking. Its other name is zyban which is prescribed to probably millions of people to quit smoking and it actually works. But for me I had horrible insomnia the whole time I was on it and I felt kind of weird and high at other times. Other people say they had very vivid bizarre dreams while taking it. But it works wonders for those who want to quit smoking, in fact I think ill go get it in a few weeks so I can quit again."

Jeff H replied: "i've been on wellbutrin for about a month now and i havent really had any side effects except loss of appetite and a little nausea. i have lost about 10 pounds in the last month but it varies from person to person."

Shaman replied: "Wellbutrion is the anti-depressant and Zyban is the same thing except it is used for helping people stop smoking. It has to be ordered accordingly for prescriptive reasons. It is known as bupropion hydrochloride and may come extended release, immediate release, and sustained release. It is highly contraindicated in pts. with any type seizure disorder, history of bulimia or anorexia nervosa because of the higher risk of seizures. It can cause mania in bipolar pts. and it has the other usual side effects of the anti depressant group. I have for the most part, only heard positive things about this drug. A few pts. had to be taken off of it because of cardiac, renal, or liver problems but these were elderly persons. The comments I have heard were about 94% positive. GENERALLY it DOES NOT cause weight gain which makes it a favorite among many."

monamarie replied: "I did great on low dosage but as soon as the dosage was increased, it was awful. Cried all the time. Gained a little weight but not much."

molly t replied: "wellbutrin will make smoking taste bad and you won't crave it so much. I lost some weight on it also."

Happy_Wheatland replied: "My Dr gave it to me to stop smoking, Read about it and no way...To many bad side affects....Good Luck......I know people that took it and couldn't sleep at all and said they felt like they were in lala land all the time..."

Kitty L replied: "Best drug in the world for depression.. Doesn't cause weight gain and wakes you up early in the morning."

Eugene K replied: "I was on wellbutrin for a few years. I had occasional mania side effect. I had a very high sexual drive."

rynay replied: "it made me suicidal. Not in a crazy way, just a very matter of fact way.."

num num replied: "Everyone is different. I took it at one time and literally flipped out. I wanted to seriously kill myself. Just watch yourself on it and if you start feeling even more depressed than you was b4 you took it, talk to your doctor about trying something else. Meds like antidepressants usually take up to 2 weeks to get in your system. Everyone is different though. Good luck:)"

is wellbutrin as an antidepressant available in Australia,? if not has anyone been prescribed Zyban (same drug - bupropion - marketed for smoking cessation) for depression?

Danielle G replied: "Yes they can prescribe it that way, but your insurance may mot cover it if it is prescribed for uses other than indicated. In the states here They have been prescribing Wellbutrin as a weight loss medication, but alot of insurance companies will not pay for off diagnosis prescriptions. Maybe if you have a cool doctor he will prescribe it for "smoking cessation" so you can quit smoking, even if you dont smoke, know what i mean?"

lil sammy replied: "I'm not sure if you need to refill it or what? It's called Zyban there and is used as an antidepressant and for smoking cessation there. I lost my bottle of Wellbutrin with a small piece of luggage traveling there. I replaced it easily by having my doctor fax the nearby pharmacy. The pills looked exactly the same, but said Zyban on them. Worked all the same so I didn't wig out on any Aussies:)- BTW, I was prescribed brand Wellbutrin as Quomen in Asia to "quit smoking". When we're really just helping my ADHD. Wink, wink."

What is an effective antidepressant? I have tried Zoloft and Wellbutrin.? I need to find something with low risk of sexual side effects and something that doesn't make me gain weight. Also, if it could help with anxiety that would be great. Any ideas?

nickipettis replied: "Neither Zoloft or Paxil worked for me. Effexor helped a lot. Some lose weight when they start taking Effexor."

deirdre b replied: "i was on Prozac for quite a while and found it quite good no side effects that i was aware of!"

ninja_girl replied: "I have three friends on Lexapro and all of them love it. As for anxiety- I take Xanax and it works wonders for me. Best of luck to you."

Lunny2006 replied: "I took celexa for about 6 months. I gained about 5 pounds and did not feel it affected my sex drive. The doctor also said that it would alleviate anxiety. I felt fine after I went off the treatment. I hope this helps."

Katz316 replied: "Effexor XR works for me. I didn't notice any sexual side effects and I lost about 20 lbs. So perhaps... But most docs will prescribe Paxil for depression with anxiety. Bad thing about that one is the sexual side effects. I would try the Effexor and get Ativan for the anxiety. It works well and doesn't slam you. Good luck and keep trying."

sherry replied: "Oh boy, paxil helped me to gain tons of weight, can't lose it, there's not enough scientific study behind it, for any doctor to tell you,and I had terrible side effects, honey, change your life, look at what's bothering you and get support, it only masks your problems it won't change them."

strongheart replied: "Antidepresants work with your sadness, then the side effects are this, you won't want to work that is, it depends on the dosage. Wellbutrin is better then zoloft, it is a antidepresant but it go against your sex drive. You won't gain weight, drink plenty of water and avoid fast foods, eat fruit, excerise and join a health club and always think positive. good luck"

peaches replied: "Try your doctor."

ht_butterfly27 replied: "I have been on several antidepressants. The best new one is Symbax, (for depression and anxiety) but it does make you gain some weight. 15 lbs. in 4 mos. for me. But it was the only one effective at controlling my symptoms. I did not have a good experience with Paxil (gave me uneasy feeling and sleep tremors), nor Prozac."

cswint2000 replied: "There is a new antidepressant out that's called Cymbalta. Ask your doc about putting you on it."

Help! I think I accendently to my dose of Wellbutrin (antidepressant) twice in the past hour? will anything bad happen?

RMS replied: "No not to much"

kimberly a replied: "i am not qualified so if you are worried, i would call your doctor! i dont know enough to tell you "dont worry youll be fine" or "woah you really need to get yourself to the hospital!" i would place a call to someone who knows exactly what to do... -kimberly (try not to do that again =) (they have those little pill (smtwtfs) boxes to prevent that i believe)"

Jennifer replied: "no nothing should happen, they try make antidepressents as kill free as possilbe because of manic or bipolar sufferers who have the tendancy to commit suicide. you'll probly just get a bit of a headache but you shouldnt have a problem."

shiraz replied: "If you are that worried ring up a poison information center. Every children's hospital has one. You should be happy not worried"

Andee replied: "Most likely, no."

fiVe replied: "If you haven't had a seizure yet, you'll be fine. That's the biggest risk with Wellbutrin and I doubt it's a delayed reaction. Doubling a dose of anything is rarely enough to cause serious damage, but it's still obviously a bad idea."

Raptor replied: "My best advice is to call a poison control center in your community. Also, your reaction to a drug's effect is kind of dependent on the maximum dose of the drug rather than on the amount you've taken. But call poison control to be sure."

Hot legs replied: "If you are on a split dose or lower dose of 150mg a shot then it would just be like stepping it up to 300mg. If more than that, I think nothing bad would happen but if you wanna know what effects to expect, call a pharmacist and they will be happy to answer."

Anyone successful quitting antidepressant (Wellbutrin)? Yeah, I know, "ask your doctor", but I've been on it for about 5 years and cut my dose in half about 1.5 years ago. I'm considering attempting to taper off of it since a) it's got to be physically healthier to be off of it and b) insurance copay sucks. Has anyone had success going of this or another antidepressant? Thanks

Bren replied: "not welbutrin but many other anti-depressants my dr told me not to stop taking them unless he told me to and he would get me off of them gradually so I would not have withdrawals......so i guess my answer is no...not sucessfully and i take a lot of meds !! good luck to you !."
