Cipro and possible side effects? Had a sore throat and a 101 fever, went to the doctor and he took a swab sample to be sent out to the lab, said it would take 3 days. Got a prescription for Cipro 7 days 2 X a day 500mg. Today is Day 3, I have no serious side effects, but my stomach hurts and maybe I am imagining this, but it feels like my knees hurt. I read online on how bad this antibiotic is to your body and I am curious why the doctor prescribed it to me since it's so strong. I am concerned if I continue taking the full dosage that I might have serious tendon/joint side effects in the future. Any doctors on here than can help me out? Just called the doctor office, results came out Normal from the swab, therefore no strep throat. Should I discontinue taking the antibiotic?

Ruth replied: "I'm not a physician nor do I know yours or what he/she saw to believe you were suffering from a bacterial infection. Sounds like it was strep? You are right Cipro is a strong antibio and it does have funky side affects. From all accounts though, I've heard once you stop Cipro the side affects go away. One of the more common and under-discussed symptoms is acute onset depression and anxiety. People report feeling overwhelming and different levels of anxiety and thoughts. As for a sore stomach, are you following the recommended dosing suggestions? I'm not sure what they are for Cipro but some say consume no dairy, take with dairy, take with food, don't take with food. As long as you are following these suggestions and are still getting a stomach ache, call your physician. Also, find out what it is he/she is treating for. You should have your results by now, call to find out. Report your symptoms. There are other options for bacterial fighting that might not have the same side affect. Take control of your care and find out what is going on!"

what is meant by "unusual cough" as side effect of cipro? My son is taking oral suspension cipro and each time it makes him have a worse coughing episode after swallowing. The coughing makes him throw up and I am afraid of aspiration. I shook the medicine and gave it correctly and wonder if the suspension is irritating his bronchial tubes. He is taking it for a bladder infection and not a respiratory problem.

bad taste in my mouth? ok so I took Cipro for a few days last week and then got so caught up with a new job I forgot. This morning i took one and tonight as i was eating dinner i got a horrible soap/metallic taste in my mouth! brushing my teeth did not help. I read up on different things it could be...side effect of Cipro says bad taste not metallic. Has anyone who has ever taken Cipro had this experience? The taste is like soap mixed with metal. I am 40yrs old, is that old enough to have mercury fillings? ANSWERS OTHER THEN "CALL YOUR DOCTOR" PLEASE! I ALREADY KNOW THAT!!!

Nicole replied: "You clearly need to call your doctor for this one. Usually you can get them to call you back the same day. Isn't Cipro the treatment for anthrax?!"

Jojo replied: "It's never a good idea to stop taking an antibiotic and then start again after you forget - it can make you allergic. Call your doctor and let him know your symptoms."

Ozark Butterfly replied: "I have never taken that but I have taken several meds in the past year that cause bad tast/metallic taste--it is a disgusting taste isn't it? Anyways, my doctor finally told me what to do about it last week---drink orange juice before you take the medicine. You might try drinking the OJ and see if that helps with the nasty taste in your mouth."

Gerald replied: "We are not a doctor -- at lest I am not a doctor. -- someone else may be. Your 40 and an adult -- go see the doctor and tell him what you eating for pills... They do not use mercury for filling teeth -- I think they use some kind of aluminum alloy."

cipro for 7 days? ive read that people who take cipro even after done can get side effects bad ones months later.........is this true and what can be done to prevent this anything?

Gabrielle replied: "I use to take Cipro, Beside upset stomach and yeast infection, i never heard that people might have something else. I always take a bottle of acidophilus wile i take cipro and for at least tow weeks after. Like every antibiotic, it destroy the friendly bacteria from our intestines, and Acidophilus puts it back. I take Acidophilus for upset stomach as well."

Chuck M replied: "No. it is not true. Cipro has a half-life of only about 4 hours (meaning half of it is out of your system in 4 hours). It is not going to affect you a month later."

Logan A replied: "yes, there are some sides with cipro"

Are they going to quit giving farm raised animals fluoroquinolones now that they have "black boxed?" Recently Cipro, Levaquin and a few other fluoroquinolone class antibiotics had their label changed because of really bad side effects. Are they going to quit using this class of antibiotics in our meat source?

MikeFrett replied: "Unfortunately, no. However, you can buy organic milk where the animals were raised naturally, and without drugs."

Taking Cipro and Keflex together? My doctor has me taking cipro and keflex together to fight a bad abcessed tooth, has anyone else had to take these in combination and what were your side effects?

My doctor prescribed me Cipro, and im scared to take it!? I was on bactrim for 4 days, but I called my doctor, and he said he had to change my prescription... They gave me cipro, and im very scared to take it. A lot of the side effects seem really strange, one even says "feelings of not trusting others or feelings that others want to hurt you"...ive never heard of that before. Has anyone ever taken this for a bladder infection? Is it as bad as it seems to be? Does it make you sick at all? Im very scared.:(

deedee replied: "cipro is a very safe drug that is prescribed quite often for bladder infections. people read too much into the side effects. cipro has been doing its job for a long time with no reported effects like this. goodluck."

Stine replied: "Yes, I've taken Cipro before for many things (including a bladder infection), and I've never had any of those problems. According to the available drug information, Cipro had adverse effects in a very small number of the 49,000 patients who tested it in clinical trials. An even smaller amount of these people experienced mental side effects. So, the chances of having such an extreme reaction are small, as the chance for the side effect is small--smaller than the percentage of mentally ill people in the population (and, in fact, these people may have been predisposed for mental side effects in the first place). If you're still concerned, contact your doctor. However, I don't think you have anything to worry about. See below for more:"

Kelly T replied: "I have taken it, and it proved to be the only thing that would clear up the infection. If you have concerns about the cipro- call your doctor back and ask him about the side effects and what your system might react to adversely. There are side effects associated with nearly every anti-biotic, some of which are the result of our taking them when they were not really needed. These bladder infections can move on into your other systems, and you really need to take care quickly - you don't want a kidney infection on top of everything else. The cipro did not make me sick, but I followed the directions exactly, and suffered no side effects. I got over the infection quickly, too - but finished out the prescription - as you are supposed to. Do consult with your physician - sometimes our attempts to heal ourselves are just not the best thing."

side effect or more of Ciprofloxacin HCL? Two days ago I went to urgent care after having a bladder infection for 2 weeks that quickly turned into a kidney infection. I had a fever of 103, chills, nausea, the whole nine yards...everything but a headache. Normally I get UTI's every 3 months on average so when I was prescribed Cipro it was nothing new, and every time before I've never had any side effects. This is day two of taking Ciprofloxacin HCL 500 this time around and I've never had a worse headache in my life I think. The back of my neck is really stiff and sore, the pain is very sharp at my temples, and it generally just feels like my brain is trying to push its way out of my skull through my forehead. I get dizzy/disoriented also at random times. I've been drinking tons of water, eating just fine, all symptoms of my kidney infection are gone, its just this headache and I have 8 more days of meds to take. I'd call the Dr. to ask but I hate being that whiny hypochondriac and I'm just looking for some opinions I guess. Oh, extra strength Tylenol (2 pills) does nothing for this. Thanks if you can help.

lakeplacidgirl2001 replied: "You might be having a migraine... I would call the doctor and let him know what is going on."

Am I going nuts or medical side effect? I was losing potasium due to a water pill i was taking. My doctor prescribed me some potassium pills to take ( 1 daily). So far so good. i am also taking an antbiotic ciprofloxacin. The past day or so I feel mentally out of sorts and depressed, not myself. I have been super stressed fora long time. I wonder if i am cracking up or if I'm having a side effect to one or both of my meds. I feel off and on liek I am having a psychotic episode/even a panic attack. I took the the cipro before and felt ok, but now I wonder if too much exposure to it is making me nuts. Can too much potasium make you feel crazy? I had to sing a song under my breath to feel normal cause I was really feeling crazy for a while. This lasted for a few hours off and on. It happened after I took my meds and also got some bad news. I feel a lot better now and I worked on something that took my mind off my mind, but these episodes really scared me. Maybe I will try not taking my meds tomorrow. Maybe I need more rest too.

Grace replied: "Get some sleep and then go talk to your doctor!!!!"

chimmi95 replied: "My suggestion is to get some rest and cut the dosage for a day or two, then start them again for a day or two. if the panic attacks come in the dosage patterns go to your doctor, ask for a different set of potassium pills, if this is not the case then you gotta visit the shrink."
