My Psychiatrist has me taking Lithium and Prozac for MD/BPD. I have Started hearing crowds and choirs sing? She now treats me with Abilify in addition to the Lithium and Prozac. The voices went away. Am I crazy? I've been taking the Lithium and Prozac about 10 years and the ability about 6 months.

Sunny replied: "I think you should see another doctor and get a second opinion."

starrwoode replied: "yes you are crazy, if you werent you wouldnt be taking that stuff, voices are signs of schitzophrenia."

Charley128 replied: "I agree with Sunny, the meds are not supposed to start voices. She should be giving you different meds, not extra ones. And your not schizophrenic if it's the drugs making you hear the voices."

apeystar replied: "I am taking Abilify and a slew of other meds for my Bipolar disorder. Without the anti-psychotic I do experience delusions and voices. Especially in times of high stress."

oracle replied: "You are not crazy but you do have a condition where there is a chemical imbalance in the brain why you take the Lithium-the why of the Prozac which as far as I know is for depression that you'll have to ask your Psychiatrist to explain and the Abilify. The Abilify must be for the voices that you hear which is usually a Schizophrenic but I am not a Psychiatrist-and only one learned in these matters-Psychiatrist can answer your question correctly. If in doubt it doesn't hurt to go get a referral to another Psychiatrist for should have access to your records. Discuss this with your Psychiatrist and she can refer you to a colleague for I wouldn't just go to anyone. Since she's been helping you for 10years she must know what she's doing and you can trust her. At least when you are hearing stuff its entertaining and nice ,the choir singing-do not know about the crowds singing-loud huh.But there are those with the same condition that see and hear things not so nice. Wish you a happy life but rest in that you are not crazy-if you take the medication you can have a almost normal life so be glad for that."

trafficjams replied: "I've always wondered what it was like to hear weird voices. Is it scary?"

char g replied: "No honey you are not crazy. I am Bipolar also and i hate to admit to this but whenever my dosage was cut I started hearing crowds of people talking and music all of the time. I am on Seroquel and the doctor had to increase the dosage from 600 to 750mg at night to help control it. So far it has worked. Lithium is such an old drug and has many, many side effects as does the Prozac but if you can tough it out you will be fine especially since he now has you on Abilify. Hang in there honey things will straighten out. Just remember that it takes four to six weeks for the new drugs to get into your system. Good Luck"

NOSTRADAMUS replied: "Dont worry, you are not crazy......yet. I hear a lot of voices and very loud and i cant identify where are they comming from....when im in the stadium."

penelope replied: "seek a second opinion medications should not worsen your symptoms i think that quack needs to see a quack"

sameileen19 replied: "you should tell ur doctor. or get a new one"

Has anybody come out on the otherside of raising a teenager with bipolar and some bpd traits? I have been asking alot of questions but I think I need to hear some stories that have better endings or middles. My daughter is willing to go to therapy and is. She gets overwhelmed or feels or dosn't feel and just looks at me and says "take me back to the hospital" I see she trying but at certain points during the day she just can't deal and shuts off. Looks depressed and has to draw fear from everyone. She is on meds depakote, abilify, cymbolta. Lithium helped but it made her tierd so they stopped it. I am starting the book walking on eggshells and hope it helps me. I feel strongly she can overcome in time but what could or will happen between now and then is what scares me.

How can I treat my BPD when I am unemployed with no insurance and a county health care system that SUCKS? I live in Houston & Harris County is the bowels of Hell when it comes to mental health & you're unemployed with BPD & No ins. You name the med..except Lithium I have taken it. The only meds that work for me are THC & XANAX! For those that don't know : BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) is a REAL mental illness/medical condition: not a "bogus copout" like some ppl; ahem, say.

Need Java Now!! replied: "Hello, Please tell me what BPD is and I will come right back to your posting. OK"

nunu replied: "have you heard of you should read the feedback and see if its for you i just ordered a 6 month supply anything herbal has to be better than the bpd meds from the doctor and they're cheaper than the ones i have to buy good luck!!!!"

lisa1cares replied: "go to the NAMI web site they might be able to help. also if you need meds your doc can give you samples. good luck"

dumb-blonde replied: "Hi, If you have BPD and live anywhere in the US, the county health system will usually suck. THC will not help, mainly because it is not a mood stabilizer, and xanax can make some symptoms worse. Here is the website: There is a toll free number you can call. Good Luck"

angelzwings20032001 replied: "You didn't mention your age. You can get government assistance dependent upon how severe you have been affected by bp disorder. Go to the social security site here on the web. You take a test to see if you would be eligible for benefits. Good luck to you."

myluvallen replied: "Hi: One thing you can do is to go to your closest DTA office (Department of Transistional Assistance). The County you live in has absolutely no say in this office at all. Is comes directly from the state, etc... Bring with you any of the following if they apply to you: Past 6 months I think would be good. Better to bring more than have to make another appointment: Rent/Mtg rcpts, work stubs (I know but I had to put it in), all utility bills including your mobil phone, checking and or savings statements, your social security card, if you are on disability from the gvmt and do not have direct deposit you will need those stubs also. Bring anything that you feel is important to apply for assistance. This office can apply your information so that it meets any and all programs you will be able to be approved for. The services are things such as food stamps, fuel assistance, rent assistance, monthly financial assistance, trave assistance such as taxi vouchers and the such, I am sure there are more programs, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. OK, now on to Health Insurance: While you are at the DTA, ask you case worker what the states health insurance program is and also an application. The 2 offices are not usually combined so you with have to deal with the insurance one directly. In Mass it is called "Mass Health" and there are different tiers of the coverage depending on which catagory you fit into. Basicallt this will cover dr appts including mental health, medications, dental, eye, hospitals, testings, etc. This is worth the 30 or so minutes you are on the phone with them. Also some of these offices and it varies from state to state will let you fill out your application right over the phone with a real actual person and not a machine. May I please ask it doesn't sound like you have Medicare or if you are receiving disibility funding from the govmt. Why not? BPD disabled, not able to work etc...is entitled to disibility benefits and also medicare even though you are not 65. Please look into the disability and medicare parts of this response because you are entitled this assistance. You can always send me an email if you have questions, I will do my best to answer those for you. Be Safe & Be Well"

blazergirlblazergirl replied: "You may have a few opitions, but they could be time consuming and they would require a lot of patience. I live in the state of California so some things may vary in your state. A hospital can not deny a patient treatment, you could try and see if they have a free or low cost mental health facility. Most do, but there is usually a waiting list. Some hospitals take patients that have no insurance, but have a medical necessity for the treatment on a "Short Doyle" basis. Really remember these 2 words because the hospital usually always has a few cases like this available but they do not let patients know. You can also start the process with social security and when they approve you, you should most likely be eligible for whatever free medical services that they have. Here you qualify for free medical and dental through Medi-Cal. You can also call the Pet Team in your area. They are great at referring you to resources you have never heard about. If you are of school age, you can get many resources through the school district that are paided for through your state. Sucha s IEP, AB3632 and 504 plan. When you qualify for AB3632 they give you free mental health services. Some times medication is also free or it is very cheap. I hope some of this information has helped and you can find some type of affordable treatment in your area."

Steve M replied: "Move to Massachusetts, they have mandatory health care. Just be prepared to pay Massachusetts taxes."

KELJO replied: "hi hunny! I know what it is like to live without insurance! I cannot work because of neck issues and I cannot get any disability. My husband's good for nothing boss does not even offer insurance and we both have back issues that no private insurance company will take us. And to top it all off we have 3 children under the age of 12 who have been without insurance as well. We NEVER go to the Dr. because we cannot afford to go and even if we did the cost of the meds would be completely out of the question!! So the rich get richer and the poor and middle class just sit."

digitalogic replied: "BPD does not respond well to meds as you can see and is actually a way to diagnose BPD as bi-polar meds like lithium not being effective. Treatment of BPD is often done using DBT (dialectical behavior therapy). THC and xanax may be effective in slowing you done, keeping you safe and less impulsive. The problem is that managing BPD is about obtaining skills to address the problems with emotional instability, self harm, relationships, dependence, abandonment etc. This is a tough road and I agree with you that there is a stigma and lack of understanding for BPD. I would think that with the number of hospital/crisis, services offered to people with BPD who do not have insurance. Where I work there is a temporary insurance given by the county to people under 200% of the poverty level in their come (less then about $1500/mo) who don't have insurance to meet the needs to peopel at risk like people with BPD. This is temporary and I them through DBT groups and do DBT skills coaching with them for the duration of year. In the minds of the county the decrease in hospital stays is worth the money so they fund it. Sad but true rationale for mental health care in the public sector. There is also a center that does DBT exclussively for the BPD population. They also will work with people with subsance abuse and BPD and eating disorders and BPD. Your situation sounds like it sucks and moving might be what you have to do to get better care. I know moving is tough for someone with BPD who is not just picking up and running away so I wish you luck and support you in your quest get better."

Jarboe replied: "I have BPD, but I am fortunate to live in Canada where treatment of it is covered by the government. What I suggest you do is search for some therapists who offer free services or a sliding scale, because cognitive and dialectical behavioural therapy is a must with BPD...people like us need to learn how to think differently, react differently, and behave differently. We need to learn how to recognize when we're falling into a "BPD moment" (as I call them, though some have lasted for months - grr!) and find our way out of them without any harm done to ourselves or others. THC is not good for you. It may numb the emotions, but recognizing and naming emotions are what helps a person begin to deal with the BPD. And yeah, it's hard. I used to consult a list of emotions to find out what I was actually feeling. If you self harm, stop. Do something else, like scribble on paper in reds and blacks, stab a potato with a pen, or go for a walk and breathe in deeply and pay attention to what's around you instead of what's inside of your head. I also suggest you join some BPD forums. You don't necessarily have to participate, but you'll likely get more out of it if you do. is a good place to start. Also, you can google "bpd forums" for a bunch more. And...be good to yourself. Remember that it's not your fault that you have this disorder. :)"

kendziorj replied: "If you are unemployed you might consider trying to both file for disability based upon your BPD and also file with your local Family Independence Agency. I am not sure what that is called in Texas but, they offer medicare/medicaid and may at the very least be able to offer a solution."

raisedbycoyotes replied: "Why the Hell would you do THC?! How altered do you want to stay? And is that for you when your manic? Or Depressed?? You believe nothing will help and you can't get help so what do you think you are drawing to you????"

chocolahoma replied: "Take responsibility for your own self. Your county health department is not responsible for your well being. I wonder if they aren't helping you because you refuse to drop the "THC", because they might not want to enable your illegal drug habit. Either way, if you want help, you must take responsibility for your own health issues. Your mental health issues are not responsible for your unemployment. Make your own opportunity if you must. Mark Cuban, zillionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks, sold trash bags door-to-door as a kid. Finally, why not look into the $4.00 prescription program at your local Wal-Mart? One last note. Your dependence on THC is probably a "cause" of your problem, not a "cure", and is very likely the reason you can't get a paying job."

Ann S replied: "There are good answers on here about where to go for help. I just want to add a few things. Med.'s are not real effective on BPD. I have it as well as other disorders. Med.'s and counseling help. However, we also have to try to learn to control it as much as possible. There are techniques we can use. It takes time and a lot of effort on our part to be able to function "normally" again. Research it, ask your counselor for suggestions, read up on positive thinking, etc. Sometimes we all need help. There's no shame in it. Although some people get extreme over it. These things can happen to anyone. I was working 2 sometimes 3 jobs, managing, and caring for my in laws. Things happened. I had no control over. Now I am trying to get released to go back to work and get off of disability. If you get disability (through social services) you will also be eligible for medical benefits. However, it takes years of not working and having the condition to get. It is better than nothing. GL"

circle_of_life replied: "Have you ever tried St. Johns Wart? You can get it at a health food store and they say it is equivalent to high doses of Prosac. If your going into the mental health clinic and asking for THC =weed & Xanax then it's no wonder your getting no help from them since Xanax is not one of the meds commonly prescribed for BPD. Sounds like to me you are just looking for a Xanax fix which i'm sure is what you have led them to believe as well so, until you get insurance and can get in to see a doctor who will prescribe you what your looking for then try the ST. Johns Wart. My aunt has this same disorder and she swears it works for her along with smoking weed which has pretty much proven it's self to be a wonder drug for many different illnesses although, it's still not legal in Texas as a medicinal drug so she takes the chance of getting busted. I hope you find a solution to your problem and if you can, refrain from smoking weed since even if you live in a state that allows it's use for medicinal purposes, you still have no prescription for it since u have no doctor."

Rhyannonn C replied: "You should really see about applying for disability, or medicaid. Maybe go to umm like a county mental clinic? You could also try checking into the psychitric ward and they'll get you all kinds of help, not saying your insane but they know ways to get meds and so on. Try going to social services and ask whats availible for you. I had a friend with BPD .. Because she was unemployed and had bpd she recieved disability, foodtstamps, and a medical card. So she was able to see a dr. and get meds. And Yes I realize what BPD (borderline personality disorder) is and what is taken for it."

ann marie r replied: "I would consult a good psychiatrist before things get worse. there are so many new drugs available that they did not have years ago. Good luck"

Woodman replied: "All the answers submitted so far seem quite good. Another option of course is medical research clinical trials. I'm sure not everyone would agree, but it is a viable option. You may also be compensated for your participation. You can find sites on the Internet."

Has anyone taken Lithium for BLPD? I have border line personality disorder and ptsd. The Drs have been chaning my meds for a couple of years. Well they just put me on Lithium which I always thought was for BPD. Anyone out there taking Lithium for BPD and is it helping you??? I thought Lithium was natural therefore safe?! I know a couple people that have said it works great for bipolar just never heard of it being used for Borderline personality.

Whats your experience with Lithium? I have been prescribed lithium as I have bipolar and BPD. I'm worried about taking it as I have heard some bad things. Can anybody who takes it or has taken it give me your experiences, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

cjsmith87 replied: "caused me and my twin sis to become "suicidal". It sucked, but its also a sweet nirvana song. Zanax is the shiznit tho."

lolita replied: "It made me very very very very thirsty. I mean drinking like 2 gallons of water everyday. I lost a lot of weight on it. And it didn't work for me but I hear a lot of success stories."

J G replied: "I did not do well on it. Tapering on to it i was very tired, and very very thirsty all the time......still to this day have the habit of drinking a ton of water all the time....and that was 8 years ago. Also I never got to a point where it helped......but that was in part because of the fact that my b***** of a boss would never let me leave work to get my levels checked so i ended up having to go off of it(only clinic i could get to was only open when i worked). That being said, I know plenty of other people that lithium works wonders for, and isnt too bad as far as side effects. Lithium is still one of the first mood stabalizers tried for that reason.....it does work very very well for most. Im on depakote now.....if you want to read some fun side effects look that one up....it is notorious for being aweful to go on. Though im not too bad as far as side effects.....and it completely levels me out. Really it comes down to you and how your body responds to the meds. Dont go off other peoples experience so much, as yours may be completely opposite. Try what your Dr recomends. Give it 6-8 weeks as long as no severe side effects show up. In that time it should be helping if it is going to help, and side effects that may show up when starting on the med should taper off . If at 8 weeks, if it is not helping, or side effects have not tapered off to being tolerable, then discuss that with your Dr. (though do know with lithium you do have to drink a lot of water because it will dehydrate you otherwise)"

Hopefully Helpful replied: "A long, long time ago before there were newer medications, my doctor tried me on Lithium. I ended up only taking it for about a week. It caused me to have to keep running to the bathroom to urinate. It felt like I wasn't going to make it to the toilet. I could not put up with this so it was discontinued. Now there are many newer drugs to try. Please talk to your doctor about your concerns. Best Wishes to you."

Will these symptoms go away after my husband's lithium kicks in...? My husband was recently diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, even though we had suspected it for the past few years. About a year ago he went in for treatment at the VA for his PTSD from serving in Iraq 3 years earlier. The put him on anti-depressants, and they did help relieve a lot of his anxiety. He would only blow-up every 6-8 weeks when he was medicated, as opposed to never knowing what could set him off. Anyways, he started self-medicating with marijuana a few months after being prescribed the celexa. That made him much more easy-going, and controlled his outbursts further. However, he still wasn't able to stay asleep due to his nightmares, which brings us to now. He was prescribed lithium for his BPD, and has been taking it for about a week now, and should reach its full effects in about 3 weeks. At the same time, he decided to cut back, and only smokes marijuana before bed. This last week, he has been angry, on-edge, and just negative. I haven't felt anxiety like this since before he started taking his medication. I never know what's going to set him off, and he's completely neurotic. He doesn't even notice how angry he is. In fact, he denies it. So will these symptoms go away when his lithium kicks in, or his this a reaction to his decision to cut back on his smoking? I have to consciously remind myself that he is sick, and not just an a$shole. Anyone have any insight?

2 questions! i need help bad, whats the best mood stabalizer and whats the diff between bipolar and bpd? Ok so i was diagnosed with bipolar 3 yrs ago,but is until now that i realize i have a serious illness and after 3 visits to rehab. I find it hard to find the right pills and now im taking Adderall xr,lithium, wellbutrin xr and norsvac for blood pressure. But my lithium isnt working anymore and i need to change it,wha are the withdrawals of lithium and whast another good stabilizer the only side effects im worried about is weight, acne and etc lol And lately ive been reading "sometimes i act crazy" a book about bpd and i really identify myself with like everything and its making me feel bad that all this time my doc told me i had bipolar and what if i really dont! ;( im 18 and ive been trhou a lot and i dont care but i just wanna have it controled, what are the diff between those two??? and what should i do,go to another doctor and get a diagnosis or what? please help me i tried talking to my mom but she think im just spoiled and crazy literally. :( thank you I take Adderall for adhd which is very good,i dont feel bad on it,like right now i dont have any bad side effects with the ones im taking, only tremor but sometimes not always, and yes i do hurt myself i used to cut and now whenever im angry at someone or myself i hit myself and punch my face and all that type of stuff, :( i think i like to do it because when im done i feel like i deserved it.

Cookie B replied: "I'm bi-polar. Went to rehab a few times. Cocaine and bi-polars are like salt and pepper. I took depakote(valproic acid-extended release) I loved depakote. I felt wonderful on it, never depressed, or dull, just evened out. It was delightful. Then I gained about 70 pounds. Then I became pregnant and discontinued the meds. The bad news was the weight gain, but after being on the depakote for about a year and doing a LOT of therapy I haven't needed to get back on it. Clean time helps with this, it really will in itself stabilize your moods as you acquire more of it. The bad thing is, is that most bpd meds cause weight gain, but, if you need to be on something, then you should do it. BTW once I had my baby 2 years ago, I've lost 90lbs and look and feel better than ever."

lost2day replied: "Bipolar Disorder is a chemical disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder is that, ( a personality disorder), both are mental illnesses. You can have both of them at the same time and be treated for both at the same time. I`m bipolar,( bipolar with anxiety). I`m taking Tegratol, ( which is weight neutral), Topamax, Lamictal, Seroquel ( occasionally), and Trazadone. You need to be followed by a psychiatrist to have your meds changed in order to figure out which ones work for you and which ones have more side effects than usefullness. But get a proper diagnosis, and go from there. meds along with counselling are usually the treatment for any mental illness. BPD and bipolar disorder are both pretty serious. You should be followed carefully at least one a month by a professional."

lalalalalala replied: "A lot of people are diagnosed with both bipolar and borderline personality disorder. The key point in a diagnosis for bpd is self harm. So if you haven't done anything like that then you probably do not have bpd. My cousin takes both zoloft and abilify for her bipolar disorder, but she is bipolar II which doesn't sound like what you are. You need to talk to your doctor about this, because he or she can help you find the right medicine. If your mom won't listen then you should be able to take yourself to the doctor if you are over 16. If you have to, call a cab or something. If you don't mind me asking, why do you take Adderall? I can only see that causing serious problems to someone who is bipolar."

Angel replied: "The best is to go to doctor. Read An Unquiet Mind."

BPD and Venlafaxine? about 3 months ago my psychiatrist put my velafaxine meds up.i was on 150mg and he added another 75mg.at the moment all i want to do is sleep, i cant make the effort to do anything,i have have sweats, nightmares and generaly feel low.could this be side affects from the vanlafaxine.my psychiatrist said the tiredness is because im taking lorazapam and temazapam, but i have been on those for years and i have never felt this tired,he wants me to reduce the lorazapam and temazapam but im worried about getting anxiety.i feel like im in bit of a muddle.please help.he has also just put my lithium up to 800mg.

I have BPD, while my sister was diagnosed with Bi polar. Anyone have experience with someone misdiagnosed? My sister and I have gone through horrible amounts of sexual abuse starting in child hood. Because BDP can be brought on by abuse I feel that my sister could be misdiagnosed. She doesn't do the whole mania thing as I have seen it in bi polars. She has been "skipping out" on me lately. For example she will call me and talk for a few minutes, and then call back in five minutes and ask how I have been without realizing she just called me. It worries me that she might be on the wrong medicine. Has anyone any experience with misdiagnosis and how to go about correcting things? She feels like no medicine the doctor perscribs gives her any relief. She lost it on lithium and drugs of that sort. I just want to help her find what works for her.

thegoodladypayne replied: "I had a similar childhood and I was misdiagnosed as Bi-polar. 10 years and 21 different drugs laster they told me I was Borderline. Misdiagnosis horrible and I truluy had to fight for a second opinion constantly. I finally got it. Do everything you can to point out to her Psych that her meds aren't helping. Keep fighting. You'll get there. Best of luck to you. x"

pceluvr replied: "im not a dr. or anything, but it sounds like she has short term memory loss. try going to see a different dr.. also find out the side effect of the meds she is currently taking, because a side affect could be memory loss.i dont know if it helped at all, but i hope it did."

BP Support-Mod replied: "The two are very closely related and very often doctors can misdiagnose people. I have heard of it happening many times. There are also cases where a person has both(like me). Bipolar 2 which most BP's have does not need to have full mania, they can have hypomania in it's place and still be considered bipolar. I hope that helps. Either way she should talk to her doctor. I have the memory issues too but I have the problem with or without meds, the meds make it worse though."

Why has everything gone so wrong? My whole life appears to have gone so wrong recently. It has been one thing after another. First I had a miscarriage, then my new job was at threat from being closed down, then my bf finished with me out of the blue, then I took two overdoses but neither of them worked so now my liver is not working properly, then I had to tell my dad that 10 years ago I was raped by his best friend and he doesn't really believe me. I don't know what to do. I can't end it all because I tried and failed. I can't talk to the one person I always could talk to because he dumped me and my doctor has put me on lithium. I feel so lonely. I have bpd which makes everything so much harder to cope with. I feel so alone right now. I have no idea how to start peicing things back together. I just want to go to bed and never wake up. What am I supposed to do now?
