Question about depakote/ mental health..? I have been on a mass amount of meds over the years. They have tried lithium, geodon, abilify, resperidal, lexapro, cymbalta, ect pretty much any medication for depression/ bipolar. The issues I struggle with are impulsivity, EXTREME anger/ explosions, and EXTREME mood swings. I have been to wilderness camps, theraputic boarding schools, counseling, alternative learning centers, and am currently completely my 4th stay in Juvinile( 3 being in the past month). My arrest record list: assault, assault, truancy, delinquincy, (2) violations of county probation for failing drug screens. I failed on drug screen for thc and benzo's and yesterday failed one for cocaine, opiates, benzo's, and thc. I have recently been expelled from my 4th high school in 4 years, and I am getting ready to graduate from an ALC in one week. Still, my life has been filled with self destruction, but for some reason I have no emotion about anything. I dont seem to care about anything/ feel dead inside Suggestions? Help.

He also has a very high tolerance to meds and takes more milligrams than a over-weight adult would. The only thing that has seemed to help it taking Omega-3 in large amounts along side with the medications.
Some studies show that Omega-3 can have had a effectiveness of that as medication in bipolar patience's.
Here are some links for the studies:
Also to let you know my son is currently taking 3000mg in the morning & 3000 at night of the Omega-3. His doctor is aware of him taking this and supports. He is still also taking his meds. Never discontinue taking meds without speaking to your doctor first."
dancingcat_98 replied: "For starts, you're what we call "dual diagnosis". You have bipolar disorder in addition to an addiction to pot and benzos. It seems you haven't been treated for both. If you're taking you're RX meds and you're still having mood swings, you need to be seen by someone else to have you're meds adjusted. As for getting help, alot depends on where you live, your insurance, and how bad you want to get better.
Talk to you're probation officer or whatever agency is handling your case about refering you to a dual diagnosis program for an evaluation.
If you have already tried this, I have to ask you?How bad to you want to get better? Alot of people like you have no reason to get better. Mom and Dad are still there to pay for their treatment, give them money, etc. They haven't really tasted the consequences of their actions. For example: they haven't been disowned, done adult time, or broken their necks in a car accident. Sometimes that's what it takes for them to get better. I really hope that's not your situation."

Taking uppers and downers together will keep you unstable. YOu also need to figure out if you really want to get better or not because it seems that no matter what people do you are still using self-destructive behaviors."
what do you know about depakote? I have no insurance and the free mental health clinic I go to wants to put me on Depakote for my bipolar disorder because they can always provide it for me, and I just wanted to get some opinions.
Thanks!
Ahh_Sweet_Boredom replied: "I'd suggest you'd ask the doctor who recommended it. There are some pretty serious side effects that could occur while on it. Look it up on your own at webmd or other respected sites too because sometimes Dr.s can forget to mention things. The people that I've known who were on it had to go for monthly blood tests to make sure their (*white or red) blood cell count didn't decrease too much.
Sorry, can't remember which blood cells it effects."
MommyToType1Princess replied: "I took it for 3 weeks and weaned off of it due to the insane side effects I was experiencing. It can be beneficial to some if the side effects don't bother them. You will need to have blood checks as well because of possible liver damage and other stuff. Good luck and hope this helps!"
Will the Army kick me out after being diagnosed as bipolar and prescribed depakote, zoloft, and risperidone? Im a SPC in the US army with 4 yrs in, I was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the mental health clinic on post and prescribed the medications depakote, zoloft, risperidone, and ambien. I was told I couldnt deploy because I would be on these medications. I believe my unit plans on sending me to WTU a medical holding unit so they can fill my slot with someone that can deploy, I was wondering if it is likely that they will discharge or chapter me out?

Because of that you will appear before a medical evaluation board if the current line of therapy doesn't make your condition better. In the meantime you will be assigned a profile of "S-3" while your treatment is monitored. If it doesn't get good enough for you to perform unrestricted, full duty the MEB will recommend your separation for medical reasons. Depakote ER question again? You guys are probably tired of me asking-but the side effects of Depakote ER are horrendous. I have to wait until April 21 to see the mental health doctor about it, and the psychiatrist who saw me and prescribed it has pretty muc hdismissed me and the mental health people told me to call her about tapering off. I am in between a rock and hard place. I am relying on God. And talking to strangers... Pharmacist said to take 500 mg 1 daily instead of twice daily. I have only been taking it 3 1/2 weeks. And I am taking LExapro 10 mg (been taking it 1 week) and my synthroid. I was given it because of lack of focus and high anxiety(No diagnosis of any mental disorder but depressin and anxiety and ocd). Any advice would be appreciated. IT makes me so tired, very tired, heachey, cloudy urine, vomitting, dizziness, sweat at night(I was sweating at night before I started lexapro, started it after depakote). Anyone know a doctor who can tell them how to taper off?
I am going to give the Lexapro a chance. It has not been in my system long enough yet. I have been so down and out and thought about death and had lots of obsessive fears, things not normally me. Help is coming I know, as I trust God and I know everyone acts or reacts differently to the drugs. I have never had this problem before. Started because of grief, sadness, and hormone imbalance.
I should say, that I was not given a diagnosis of ocd, anxiety or depression, but those tendecies were shown.
YEAH GOD! I prayed for some answers and got a no from the psychiatrist in the hospital, but the local people are going to get me in Tuesday, tomorrow at 12. YEAH!
yeah yeah. they took me off the Depakote on Tuesday. Now I wish the Lexapro will totally kick in..... I want my mind right again-no more depressed thoughts. How long does the "sucidial thoughts" last when you first go on these meds? I am strong willed and have faith in God and I know these things will go away. I had them before because of the depression. And granted there not as strong. But, whew.
I am going to therapist tomorrow at 4.

It is usually uncommon to have severe side effects. The side effects you have should pass soon, otherwise contact your pdoc ASAP. I was on Tegretol for five years and now I am on Lamictal for about a year.
If you have any other questions dont hesitate to contact me."
csaw3 replied: "Let me just say I am not a doctor and you really need to speak with a doctor about this but as a person I have personally been through the exact same thing and this is how I did it after cutting my prescription in half for a week I begin to take that dosage every other day and a week later I took it every 2 days and so forth and so on until I was no longer taking it however I also did not do well on the lexapro either One more thing I need to let you in on alot of the websites you visit on the internet are drug companies in disguise or drug company sponsered so they well say very broad things to make it sound like their meds are the best for you also remember doctors get perks for dishing out certain meds from drug companies Good luck..."
Emily H replied: "*Any* doctor should be able to tell you how to taper off. Also, depression *are* mental disorders. I do not by any means suggest going off any medication without close supervision by your doctor. If a medication works, weigh the benefits and detriments very carefully. However, it seems like you have already decided that the side effects are unbearable.
I used to be on depakote ER (for bipolar disorder), and it seemed to work well for me and I didn't notice any side effects but weight gain. Thing is, I started taking it when I was about thirteen, and until it quit working for me at 25, I literally had zero comprehension of what a sex drive even was. To me, the sudden appearance of libido was worth the two years and counting of complete instability, an out of control mania and a deep depression. Just thought I should mention it, as I consider this one to be more trouble than it's worth, despite the fact that it actually worked.
Sounds to me like you need a new doctor. If s/he is too stupid to know that depression and ocd are disorders and won't give you any advice about the proper way to change medication, it sounds like they have Ramen for brains. Good luck."
gotta luv da Li replied: "Call your doc, leave a message describing your symptoms, say you are stopping, and want to know how to discontinue. Call again near the end of the day. Leave the same message and then ask for whoever is available. Explain how many times you've called and ask for directions. If you get nowhere, repeat again tomorrow. Be a nuisance!
As for tapering off, if you are on Depakote ER, do NOT cut the pills. They are time released. If you cut, they will become immediate release and you will get a whopper of a dose shortly after you swallow. You don't want that. My doc has had me take part of a dose every other day and then discontinue it in the past, but that was a different med.
A good site for psych med info is another okay one is
Offhand, I don't quite get why your doc would prescribe a serious anticonvulsant mood stabilizer for depression and anxiety, especially one not known for antidepressant effects. There are a couple others that would seem to make more sense if he's suspecting something on the bipolar spectrum. JMO"
mopar69dodge replied: "all i know is my doctor switched my epilepsy meds to this depakote er.and i hate the side effects I'm running to bathroom and felling sick and sleepy all the time."
Another Depakote--I take two 500 mg at night, was told by pharmacist to take 1 instead to help.? It was given for general anxiety as far as I know and "racing thoughts" but I don't think they were racing thoughts, I think it was just depression and obsessive thoughts. I was also given Lexapro a week ago. I take synthroid. I go back to a mental health doctor on April 21. I am so ready to feel better and get these thoughts out of my head and go to work, so is my family!! The Depakote seems to be creating a mass amount of side effects, and I am supersensitive to side effects. Can you just stop it without going further? Can I stop it after taking the 500 mg for 7 days? I am hoping the prescribing doctor will call today.
I ended up in the psych ward after being given hormones without getting tested. I have thyroid disorder. There were a lot of pains in my body at different areas and I was told the tingling, prickling, burning sensations, were all psycho..No diabetes That was by an ob/gyn who two years ago brought me from 2.0 synthroid to .5 synthroid based on my TSH, which was on the high range. I have no thyroid and I have been telling them for years that my hormones were not right and after an Ovarian Cancer tumor was removed and a hysterectomy and they didn't put me on HRT, I kept telling them that my thyroid was out of whack and they kept telling me I was wrong that my TSH looked fine. I can't get anyone to listen. I got obseesed with it, depressed with it, and was even out of my mind at one or time times, not thinkin straight when on the hormones and started thinking depressed and suicidal thoughts and had fears of things, and that was not me. I will take the Lexapro.. I want off the Depakote.
These are the weirdest stories... SO, I am now taking 1 500 mg of Depakote, but how do I do it to taper off? I am going to call the doctor tomorrow if she doesn't call me back. I will deal with the lexapro.

Depakote is for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia....
that is a verrrry high amount to be taken right off the bat.
things like zoloft and effexor help treat GAD...not anti psychotics.....
the reason why you're having a very bad time with effects is because they're basically overdosing you on 1000mg a day!!
stop taking it. you shouldn't of been put on multiple meds just for anxiety that is easy to treat....i'd say go to a different doctor....that doc is an idiot..."
d_babich replied: "definitely go to a different doctor. i was given the same and similar bipolar/schizophrenia medications for 10 days while being told they were for my anxiety and panic attacks. it was a nightmare. i saw a doctor everyday and told him of the side effects the most pronounced being severe trembling and convulsing in my right arm and leg (this was clearly visible when with the doctor). my anxiety was worse, i couldn't sleep.
severe anxiety and panic attacks are bad but this was worse. the doctor continued telling me that my side effects were psychological and that the meds were working. i left the facility myself after 11 days because i could not take it anymore. the next five days were the scariest of my life. i had constant severe paranoia and anxiety. for five days i couldn't sleep, eat, leave the house. my heart rate was speeding and erratic the whole time. my breathing was difficult and fluttering like my lungs were trembling. i honestly felt death was around the corner but i was too scared to leave the house and go to the hospital or call an ambulance and have them take me. the fifth day i was delusional and just a mess, my head felt like it could explode at any second, it felt literally fried. i found a bottle of xanax prescribed for my anxiety but i had stopped using because it just knocked me out. took two and slept for nearly 30 hours. woke up still "fried" but better and i could eat. this all lingered for a couple of weeks. i maintained a low dose of xanax daily and came full circle. i found valium to be better for me at low doses and still battle anxiety but it is much more manageable. please do not stay on these meds without seeing another or a couple more doctors to find out better alternatives for you than these meds."
Medication affecting my weight? I am on medication for Bipolar disorder, which I was diagnosed with 8 years ago. I was originally put on Depakote along with several other meds that I am no longer on. I gained about 20 lbs that I've never been able to lose, which I was told was a side affect from it. My weight pretty much stayed the same up until recently. About a year ago I was on Wellbutrin, Adderall, Camprall, and Depakote - still at the same weight. I started to become less stable and my psychiatrist put me on Seroquell. It worked great, but in the next 2-3 months I gained 20 more lbs and my appetite went haywire. Its now been a year and I've started to try and lose the weight thru diet and exercise, with no progress. My question is has any one else who takes Seroquell had to deal with this, and do you have any advice? Also does anyone know of a substitute med without this side affect? Or even for that matter a substitute for Depakote? Obviously my mental health is my 1st concern, but I'd like to lose the weight.
PS I'm not looking for diet or exersice advice unless its specific to the sittuation, thanks.
Autumn H replied: "That is what's wrong. Just try doing little things (exercise, eating right, etc.) there's not much u can do other than talk to a doc and see if ur suitable for the substitute."

strawberry_pockyy replied: "I actually have a sister-in-law who was in a similar situation. I'm sorry to say I don't really know what I could offer to help you, cos she only started losing weight again as soon as her doctors felt she was ready to be taken off certain medications. Just try and tackle it as relaxed as possible, eat healthy and normal servings, go for walks if you can, and just keep taking the medications and maybe talk to your doctor about what you could do about it. Good luck!"
??!! replied: "I'd say if your mood is stable and you are content with that aspect, it's not worth trying to lose the weight. If you had said that the weight was your number one issue, my answer would be different. But you indicate that your mood has been stable. Yes, I have been on Seroquel but my only complaint was that it caused terrible nightmares. I would say stick with the meds you are used to unless your weight barrels that much out of control!! Good luck"
Morpheus G replied: "Depakine or as you call it Depakote ( mood stabilizer) promotes eating and is known for opening the appetite
seroquell is worse you feel sleepy and when you do you cant wake up you eat more and more frequently so their is nothing you can do about since you eat then you sleep...
my advice never drink with them and be aware that you are not hungry its just the medication making you think that...
don't stop them suddenly or you are in for hell stay with what the doctor says...
unfortunately exercise promotes the body to secrete endorphins and serotonin but since you don't feel like standing up i cant even begin to imagine you doing some excises!!!!
i say ride it through and you have to really UNDERSTAND THIS YOU CANNOT MAKE YOUR SELF ,FEEL WORSE ABOUT THE WEIGHT... or the reasons you are on medication is lost
wish you the best

gotta luv da Li replied: "Same thing with Depakote. Same thing with Seroquel. I'm on both plus Lithium and Lamictal. I haven't a clue what to tell you. If you figure it out, let me know!
To be more honest, I've tried tweeking all my meds including lowering both Dep (brain loves it, rest of me hates it) and Seroquel to bad results. In the scheme of things, it's all a trade off. It sucks but sanity wins every time for me... and I suspect you, too.
If you haven't tried Abilify or Geodon, consider them. They are antipsychotics that are supposed to be weight neutral. But, they can be too activating for some, Abilify more so in my experience."
cella replied: "Unfortunately these meds can cause weight gain. The problem is they effect everyone differently. So in order to find a substitute it would have to be trial and error. Then hope that the meds that doesn't cause weight gain, work for you with your mental symptoms. I know, very frustrating.
My advice would be to ask your doctor. They have many newer meds out that may work for you. The next one I'm going to try is Abilify. I hear that a lot of people are having success with it without weight gain.
Take care and don't give up!"
justalittlebossy@ymail.com replied: "Yeah it probably is the medication.
A year or two ago I was put on prozac for depression and I gained like 20-30 pounds, and my apetite was all messed up. I would always be starving and when I would be so full that I should've felt like I was about to throw up, I always felt like I was still starving.
Eventually I got off the pills and although I'm still at the same weight (due to pure lazyness) I know I could lose it because I've lost ten-fifteen pounds at a time in the past year or so, although I gained it all back, lol.
But it is possible you just need to learn to control your apetite. I used to always bring gum with me and when I felt like I was hungry but I knew I really wasn't i'd chew gum. It helps to keep your mind off of it. Also, just try other activities that will also keep your mind off eating when its not necessary.
You should probably tell your doctor about how the pills caused you to gain weight. Sometimes they can find subsitiutes for it."
Mood Stabilizer Medication? What do you think of Depakote ER 250? I take it twice a day and it seems to be making me very happy. I haven't took none since this past Friday because it cost over $100 dollars to fill without insurance. I went into the hospital last Monday and got out this past Friday for mental health.
Mindy Jo replied: "Lithium is the cheapest mood stablizer. It works wonders too. PLEASE TAKE YOUR MEDS!"
Judi replied: "Well if it has been working and you have been prescribed it, really you need to find away that money is not what you base taking your meds on. Frankly it is more important that you have your medication than it is that you eat, smoke, what ever. Mood stabilizers such as this one need to be kept at a constant level in your body at all times to be effective. Once you miss a dose or two or more, you are messing with your body and taking a risk with your life.
Many drugs such as Lithium may be cheaper, but unfortunately it really does not matter what the drugs cost, it matters what works for you. If it works, FIND the money."
Bipolar, Complicated Situation, Does Anyone Have Ideas? I suffer from Bipolar Disorder among many other illnesses.
I generally do not need medication, and self treat with diet, exercise, and over the counter supplements (folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12). I have the mental aspect of the illness under control as far as there is no need for counseling, etc. However, now, I am finding that I need some help boosting my Serotonin level (usually this happens every year and a half or so for a few weeks).
I do not have health insurance. I had a disability hearing that was approved for one year of benefits and MediCal to get more up to date evidence (I didn't have insurance for a couple years), but SSI is dragging their feet on the paperwork, so I still do not have my MediCal.
I have called Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid in store clinics, none of them will deal with mental health issues and write a prescription for mental health medication.
I have called 55 mental health offices in my area (private practices) and most of them only have appointments for new patients for around 3-5 1/2 months out due to waiting lists. The one I found that had an appointment wanted $600 for the office visit.
I called the county mental health clinic, they asked me for my social security number, and it was flagged due to the MediCal eligible thing, and they won't make me an appointment.
I called MediCal they are still waiting for Social Security to stop dragging their feet.
I called Social Security, they only had my information in one of their two databases and there will be a 4-6 week more wait for the paperwork.
I tried calling my dad (he knows people in the Medical community), and the only thing he can get me is Effexor which I cannot take because it makes me suicidal.
The only prescription medications that I can take is Lithium for short term and Depakote E.R. for long term.
I've called old doctors, clinics, everywhere I can think of, and it's all coming up empty. It's all because of this dumb pending paperwork thing.
I am perfectly happy, but the depression is heavy right now (no real cause due to lifestyle, all due to serotonin levels).
Can anyone think of anything that I haven't tried? Anyone know of anything over the counter? Or have any hope to get me thru this situation?
I am a very religious person, and that gets me thru many situations, but it does not balance out my serotonin levels. What am I to do?
I have not tried St John's Wart. I've heard many discrepencies in studies, non of which were conclusive that it actually does work.
Also I am unable to look for work. I am completely disabled with Fibromyalgia, Bipolar Disorder, IBS with diarrhea, GERD, Esophagitis, undiagnosed abdominal pain, asthma, severe allergies, and many other illnesses that prevent me from living a normal life.
FrogLady replied: "I commend you for the effort you're putting forth in order to get help. I'm a bit surprised at the mental health departments in your area because the issue is now. You don't have insurance now. You may apply in a week, two weeks or two years depending on the bureaucratic red tape, but you are asking for help now. I might pursue this a bit further.
If that still doesn't work call the local treatment centers in your area because if they treat individuals for mental health they usely offer free meetings to people with your type of issues. How do I know is because I went to a treatment center and they had meetings to help patients as well as individuals from the outside.
I hope this helps even if it's temporary. Whatever you do don't give up. You deserve to be helped. God speed."
tracyhide replied: "Have you tried St. John's Wort?"
Kim W replied: "Well frankly I'd flat out look for work, and by that I mean going to the office of rehabilitation usually located at the social services dept of your town. It is a federal office and they pay for training of the illness or disability of people who can't work for what ever health reason. You can't have an outstanding student loan, however. This is a good program, even if your on a list. 2. Think of networking at your church, (finding a nurse or doctor who could advocate for you to get what you need) 3. Go to mexico or canada. 4, Can't the ER help you if your anxiety gets to code red? 5. I would attend those meeting of friends and family of the mentally ill (these wonderful people have been thru it all and may have some real suggestions) 6. I will pray a novena for you."
Andrew replied: "I would call your local help line if you have one. Many area's have free clinics that someone without insurance can go to. Some are run by their county health dept. some by Church's etc. Check with your local catholic charities you don't have to be catholic to get their help. There may be other agency's funded by the United Way Fund in your area that can help you out. Not knowing what state you are in I'm not sure what might be available there. I know in NY and FL places are available to help. I hope there is something like these in your area. Can't someone at your local social services steer you in the right direction.
Lastly, I know sometimes your elected state or federal politicians may know where to go."
How long do side effects normally last with Prozac? I know I have asked a lot of questions about the Prozac. And I am an impatient patient. My therapist and doc just love me. They do. I had a hormone imbalance(menopause) and a pdoc that thought I should be OD on some anxiety meds(Depakote) and Lexapro, which created some really weird problems. Anyway, thank God for mental health and an obgyn. I have thyroid disorder too. So, making a long story short, I have had every side effect thus for to the ADs. And just this week the dizziness(you know when you get up from laying down or sitting too long) that comes with Prozac started, and at night, I still am like getting up(eyes opening) twice a night. I still have some nervousness/anxiety(physical) and the headaches in the back (tension, hormone). I am on 20 mg of PRozac a day. I am just now in the middle of week 8, and Thursday will be week 9. There have been some major improvements and there are days where my body feels crappy. Doc says SEs. Guess I will have to live with. What about you all
I am much improved over the last month or so. Stinkin' Thinkin' is almost gone. Not suicidal, and the ruminating thoughts are almost gone, the weepiness is almost gone. So I know God is working and so is therapy and I hope the meds are. What can I expect? I know we are all different. I am in regular contact with therapist and doctor. (Psychiatrist). And I go back to work next week. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Shared experiences?
I am not taking the Depakote now. Just Prozac, and my two hormones. Can ya'll tell me what ya'll felt after 2 months?
I was being a smart alec when I said they love me. I bug them all the time. I like to be a little informed when I go see them. (This is for answerer number 2) Come on, guys, can we just share our experiences? Without smart alecs...

Common issues with BiPolar? I am 27 yrs old, married & have two beautiful kids. And one very stressed out husband who tries somewhat to understand...I've recently been diagnosed with bipolar. I had depression for many years & have took about every anti-depressant there is- this time, they just wouldn't help. Got so sad it forced me to quit working. Finally got to see a mental health specialist & she diagnosed me BiPolar which kinda shocked me.They put me on depakote ER & I think it's doing ok. I'm not so sad anymore~problem is now I'm always angry & just think about running away from life. I don't wanna talk to people I know, but at the same time I'm starving for attention from almost anyone. I want to be alone ~ but hate to be alone all at the same time. I feel like everyone hates me & sometimes I know it's all my fault because I'm so rude & hateful when they do try to get close. The people I was close to now stay away because they think I'm acting weird. My senses are extremely strong at times :hearing, smells, taste, touches, pain, etc. My emotions go haywire & I try really hard to hide this because my family doesn't understand & I hate being considered crazy. I look like a teenage with so much acne again except it's all over -not just on my face. I just don't know... and I forgot to take my meds one day & my head hurt so bad my eyes felt like they would explode` (I wouldv'e cut my head off to stop that pain). I don't know if it's all just side effects or just because I'm going through something completely new. Any advise ? or can someone tell me things to expect, things to watch for, and things that really shouldn't be happening ?.......
