Does Lexapro make anyone crave sweets and feel TIRED? I am 32 married with five children. Been dealing with depression and SERIOUS PMS for years. Prozac worked really well for two years. Then, this past winter was horrible. I was a wreck. Dr. upped Prozac...nothing. I tried homeopathy with light therapy and exercise. Worked for energy, but was still VERY emotional. So, now we are trying Lexapro. Been three weeks and I am extremely tired with no drive to do much and I am restless and antsy at different times and have trouble sleeping at night; and I have lost my appetite(not complaining:) But when I do get hungry it's for sugar and sweets! Will it get better? I just want to feel "normal". I know meds are different for each individual, should I try something else. Thanks.

mickjam replied: "I take Lexapro, and I like it. The side effects are worse on other drugs, at least for me. If you get into a good schedule, and take it at the exact same time every day, you should be able to control your little ups and downs with your meals. Eat right and you'll be better than normal."

sara74432 replied: "I also im on that helps with my depression! best thing i have found for it! but i have crazy dreams about people in my life and dont sleep as deep but the not sleeping as deep is good for me becuz befor i was a very deep sleeper.i dont see any diffrents in my appetite. i have been on it for 6 weeks my dr. says it takes about 8 weeks are so to see the full diffrents. so you should just keep trying it maybe it will get better"

janecullenk replied: "I take 10mg of Lexapro along with 300mgs of Wellbutrin. I have lots of energy most of the time, but do have a larger appetite than I wish. Very crazy dreams at night, but glad to be sleeping. My pms is in check. You might talk to your doctor about this combination, I've been doing this for at least 6mos."

Just started Lexapro, tired and dizzy, probably not normal? Just wondering if anyone ever experienced being dizzy on Lexapro. I know I'm tired and feel like crap from my allergies so it may be hard to judge these as symptoms from the Lexapro, only going on day 4. Words of wisdom/experience?

ninamc11 replied: "I would contact your Dr to report your symptoms and they may want to try to switch your medication, or perhaps try you on a smaller starting dose. Dizziness isn't usually allergy related."

phlada64 replied: "I'm a psychiatric nurse by occupation, but I also take Lexapro for both depression and anger. It made me very drowsy in the beginning, but being dizzy is not unusual at the start. If this continues much longer, however, I'd call my doctor and tell him how you feel. Everyone reacts differently to medication. I have tried other meds over the years and can truthfully say that Lexapro has done the job for me. I hope it ends up working well for you too."

Ryan C replied: "Lexapro takes weeks to effect the body correctly. You may be taking too low of a dose, but only your doctor should make that decision this early in taking this type of med. I strongly recommend sticking with it though. Good luck."

kimberly_pena_8457 replied: "When i first started taking lexapro i felt tired and dizzy. it lasted a week. After that i was fine. Just let your body get used to the drug"

MalteseLover replied: "I think it is prob allergy. I take Lexapro also & it works very well."

julia1 replied: "Hi there Have been taking it for 6 weeks, first few days, I was quite dizzy in the mornings when I got up, (I take it at night) but it never affected my functioning. Then as you probably know fatigue is part of depression, but it was never a significant symptom of mine, but after starting it, I was dead tired for the first 3 weeks, I actually think my symptoms got worse, maybe it was because I acknowledged that I was ill, or maybe it was the drug. The selling point for lexapro is it can work within the first week, but it took about 5 weeks for me, I feel so much better, still a bit tired, but I have also increased my exercise gently. So it is up to you, but I am glad I stuck out the first 6 weeks, it really made a huge difference. Good luck!"

uniqueoneisme@yahoo.com replied: "With many patients during the beginning stages of taking this particular medication along with other sister drugs such as (Prozak, Paxil, Effexor, Welbutrin & such) this is normal during the first three weeks of getting it into your system. However, there have been cases reported to where these medications have caused some to become worse and even suicidal. So you need to monitor yourself very closely for any unusual thoughts during taking this medication. Personally, I would try to stay with it for at least 3-weeks and if your tiredness and dizziness have not gone away by then, you probably need to be switched to a different medication. Considering that you do not get any of the other side effects I have mentioned above during the next three weeks or afterwards."

How do you feel on 20mg Lexapro? Are you tired? lazy? I have depression & anxiety. Lots of worries in my life. I can't see pills fixing my personal problems or family problems. Dr. also said to take Abilify 5mg then 10mg but I am really afraid of the scarry side effects. I feel so tired, sleep every minute I get. My mom is 78 and I sleep more than her or anyone I know. I don't want to stop Lexapro, it does help me w/ anxiety attacks and don't want to start up on something else because of all the side effects etc. Did you gain weight on Lexapro? I lost 12 pounds in June when I started and now seem to gaining.

Carol w replied: "DO NOT STOP TAKING MEDS. this could throw you off harshly. Call and talk to your local pharmacy or dr. These are some slight side effects."

Deeez replied: "Hmm I found lexapro quite good I was on 40mg I'm not a fan on meditation but obviously it's a great thing to have for pl who need it. Find a doc you trust that will LISTEN to you!! Easier said than done! There are so many drugs ask your doc to find one that works, or do like me and handle it naturally! Meditation journalling and exercise. Hang in there"

Paul A replied: "I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over two years, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can't tell I'm taking any medication at all. There are a lot of people that take Wellbutrin with their SSRI's and SNRI's, it helps to counteract some of the possible side effects - such as drowsiness, weight gain, and the sexual side effects. It really does make a difference!! I was on 20 mg of Lexapro, and it made me to where I could sleep 12 hours per day, with no trouble at all! I added the Wellbutrin SR and dropped the Lexapro back down to 10 mg, and everything is working great right now!!"

What's your thoughts on Lexapro. How does it make you feel? My doctor prescribed me Lexapro 10mg to deal with my depression and anxiety. Ive been on the meds for two weeks and notice some changes. Mostly side effects, such as when I take the pill in the morning before I go off to school, college student, in the late evening, I would feel tired and begin to develop a migraine. My whole body would give a sign that it will soon give up if I go on with my work or studies. I need at least 16 hrs in a day to do what I do. Is this side effect normal? Please help. Share your thoughts. Do you get headaches or anything? I was on Zoloft for about 3 years and it works great but Zoloft made my days fly by too quickly, meaning the years pass by without me truly living it. The whole 3 years was numb and somewhat dream-like. Is Lexapro the same or different? Whats your thoughts/

N.E.Pats Fan replied: "I would talk to your doctor. I don't think that is normal. I was on Lexapro for a month for depression and it helped me. But it doesn't sound like it's helping you. Maybe ask if you can try Paxil or something. It is a more generic brand. Good luck!"

STARLITE replied: "Main thing for me - I refuse to take anything with the side effect of weight gain. Not only being depressed, but being depressed also over being overweight. I have been on many many medications"

Simplystunning replied: "Lexapro is like Celexa, and the side effects are normal. after about one month you will feel better and not be as tired and the headaches are unrelenting, horrible, won't go away! the first few weeks are really tough to get through. There are other side effects, like sweating, change in taste, diarrhea and what not, but if they dont subside then see your doc again as you may need to adjust your dosage. Good luck."

monika replied: "I don't know about Laxapro but my friend is on Geodon and she doing very well."

Duckie replied: "I started a pan of meat on the stove...then walked away. Forgot about it completely. we often act dif to meds~~ keep looking for one that works for you"

Nosgothic replied: "I was put on about 20mg of Lexapro a while back, and it worked (and still does) wonderfully. Though not all pills work the same for everyone. Though I cannot say the same for Effexor; everyone I knew, who was on it, got worse and it's symptoms where just as bad. Good luck on your search."

medicineman777 replied: "Lexapro is a anti depression medication, classified as a SELECTIVE SSRI this means less side effects and better than Zoloft, the side effects will subside shortly. Good Luck"

Scarlett Rose replied: "Lexapro made me worse. Whenever I took it, I was at an all time high, but as soon as it started fading away, I went lower than before... The effects are too extreme and sudden."

confused replied: "Its always hard to say how one medication will effect each individual person. There are side effects to almost every medication on the market.I think asking people their opinion can be dangerous. The majority of people don't really know what they are talking about and that is how misinformation is past along. You need to make sure that you are being prescribed any psychiatric medication from a specialist not a general practitioner this could avoid much wasted time. Antidepressants fall into various classifications SSRI,SSNRITricylic, MAOI's.....etc. Lexapro is a newer generation of Paxil., and is prescribed for depression with anxiety. I am imagining the Effexor (for depression) gave you a much more stimulating effect. You really need to understand your depression, what type, its severity, and when accompanied by anxiety you really need to understand where the anxiety stems from. Anxiety can be a symptom of depression as well depression can be caused by anxiety. Sometimes there is no one pill for the cure.I have been working in this field for 15 years and I have dealt with both for many years and have learned that medication alone is not always the cure but a tool to aid in the cure while working with a mental health proffessional. Currently I have been trying a new medication Cymbalta and it is awsome! (keep my fingers crossed ) I take a benzodiazapine for my anxiety as needed. My anxiety is situational and I dont allways need medication. Unfortunately, its hit and miss with medication and there are so many out there. Just remember before you give up on any one medication to try it at least 1 to 2 months and never stop taking it without letting your Dr. know. I wish you all the best!"

gee-geeofmo replied: "Yeah-Zoloft did that to me too. I took lexapro once and it was okay. i did not have side effects but it really did not help that much. My drug of choice(lol) is Prozac. I have been taking it since 1987 on and off. Its the only thing that helps without all the side effects. My husband takes Cymbalta He says it really helps him, but i have never tried it."

why am i neauseated and tired with my lexapro? i take it at night with a piece of toast (around 9-10pm) and i feel a little neauseated 1hr later, and when i wake up in the AM (6am) i still feel neauseated and tired. i'm getting headaches too. is this normal? i've been on it for 1 week now. ps- i'm on the merina IUD and have been for 2 years now with no side effects. i'm on 10mg of lexapro. and i eased into it on 5mg for the first 2 days. the reason as to why i take the lexapro so late at night is to avoid the side effects. supposedly 2 hours after taking the medication you are supposed to be side effect free, for the most part. but these side effects are interrupting. i gag when i brush my teeth everyday, which is very new and VERY unusual for me. i just feel so neauseated. and it even tapers into the evening hours some days. lexapro = antidepressant i'm taking it for PMDD thank you ME :o)

ME replied: "Well these are the side effects: Back pain; constipation; decreased sex drive; diarrhea; delay in ejaculation; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; impotence; increased sweating; lack of orgasms; loss of appetite; nausea; trouble sleeping; unusual fatigue; upset stomach; vomiting. and sadly its a side effect so its normal! Also pick Moxie for a Best Answer she deserves it!"

Moxie1313 replied: "First of all, lexapro is an odd choice to be used for PMDD. Usually it's Prozac(or Sarafem, which is just a different brand name for Prozac), and it can even just be taken for the 2 weeks you have bad symptoms of PMDD. Secondly, lexapro is very similar to Celexa, which I've been on for a year. The only side effect I've had with it is anorgasmia, which sucks, so I also take Wellbutrin to cancel that out. I tried Buspar to help me with anxiety and irritibility but it actually gave me 'morning sickness' symptoms - dizzy, sweaty, nauseated(I even threw up twice). So different people can have different reactions to meds. If you've been on this for a week, it's up to you - do you want to stick with it for a few more days and see if you get used to it? Maybe try taking it closer to your bedtime, with a little bit more food or a full glass of water. Or do you want to talk with your doctor about trying something else? I've been on Yaz for 3 months, and it's helping me a lot. I know you have an IUD, but Yaz is great for PMDD. I had been on yasmin before, but Yaz is a slightly lower dose of estrogen."

Lexapro made me tired! what part of the brain did it affect? My dr now wants to try adderall. What part of the brain does that effect?

Paul A replied: "I take Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over a year and a half, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. Make sure you take the Lexapro in the evening, that makes a BIG difference. Also, if you were on 20 mg or more of Lexapro, you might think about the Wellbutrin SR / Lexapro combination I'm doing, that really works great :-)"

What does drinking a lot while on Lexapro do? I take 10 mg of Lexapro and my family doctor said I can have 1 or 2 glasses of wine but no more than that. It seems to make me tired no big deal. If I break that rule what will happen? What happens to a person who drinks like 4 glasses of wine when on Lexapro?

sttmberz replied: "u die"

Tess replied: "This is what I found for you-- Drinking alcohol while on Lexapro is not recommended. This is because if alcohol and Lexapro are taken together, Lexapro may potentially increase the effects of the alcohol. If you choose to drink while taking Lexapro, you should drink only light-to-moderate amounts of alcohol -- one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. Twelve ounces of beer, five ounces of wine, and one ounce of 100-proof spirits all count as one alcoholic drink. You should also make sure not to drink at the same time as you are taking your Lexapro. ps- a friend of mine ws taking SSRI's and continued drinking[5 a day?]. His depression became worse and he became more and more confused. In his case he ended up in hospital because his depression was out of control and he was suicidal. I am sure this is not your story, but this is a story of SSRI's and alcohol."

Jacob S replied: "Mutation Death Becoming a big blob of DNA Altered sight Death More Death 0.0000000000001% of living Death Mutation"

Paul A replied: "Alcohol is a depressant, which counter-acts the purpose of the Lexapro, the anti-depressant. If... You want to drink say four glasses of wine, and haven't had any alcohol that week, I'd say you're probably okay - as long as you don't drink after that for a while. Physically, it won't do anything bad to you. It probably doesn't do the liver much good though. Just be careful, and don't overdo it."
