If I drink alcohol while taking cephalexin will it no work? I have to start taking cephalexin for an ear infection. Will alcohol make it not work?

9Suns replied: "Alcohol will drastically reduce the action of the antibiotic. You may as well throw the pills away if you intend to drink while on the this med. It would be in your BEST interest not to drink while you are on the medication. You'll get better and you won't have a recurrence of the infection. GOOD LUCK!!!"

I'm on Prednisone(steroid) cephalexin(antibiotic)and hydroxyzine pamoate(antihistamine) can i drink alcohol?? Im on these for an ear/sinus infection and wondered if its safe to drink alcohol while taking these medicines. its basically the run of the mill stuff they give you for ear/sinus infections, and you cant drink on it?? that seems odd...you can buy this stuff OTC..

alabamaprepboi replied: "I'd HIGHLY recommend that you do not drink any kind of alcohol. Depending on the type of antibiotic, you might have a sever reaction that will make you puke your brains out. Not to mention the reaction it might have with the steroids and antihistamines. You need to chill until you're absolutely finished with the antibiotics and don't drink until 24 hours after you take the last dose."

Julia replied: "It doesn't matter that it's OTC. It's still not a good idea to mix certain medications with alcohol. (Tylenol is OTC, but taking it with even three drinks a day cause liver damage.) Anithistamine has properties that depress the central nervous system. Alcohol depresses the central nervous system. It is never a good idea to take two things at one time that are CNS depressants, especially if one is not in a controlled amount, like alcohol. Also, I am surprised that your doctor didn't tell you not to drink with the antibiotics. Alcohol essentially destroys the effects of the antibiotics, never mind how sick you will get combining the two. I don't even know about the prednisone, but unless uncontrollable vomiting and loss of consciousness sound good to you, it's a good idea to abstain until the medications are out of your system."
