What do you know about multiple sclerosis and statin drugs like Zocor? I have been diagnosed off and on for 7 years now. My last diagnoses was 5 months ago and I started taking shots i was having a localized reaction and my dr took me off it. He told me there has been studies that have shown that statin drugs work for ms. I have never heard of this. He also told that since I have been diagnosed more then 5 years i will not become permantly disabled. Please give me your thoughts of this.

prarierosebud replied: "I was diagnosed with MS nearly 20 years ago. I have never heard that statin drugs work for MS, but have taken lovastatin since last June. I really don't notice any difference with anything except my cholesterol went way down. Your doctor may be right about not becoming disabled. I still have no disabilities and actually feel better than I did 20 years ago, when I was experiencing all kinds of MS symptoms. I went into remission and have stayed there for many years now and I hope you will too."

pcheesewhiz replied: "To my knowledge statins have no affect upon MS. I have heard it said that if you have MS for five or more years without a serious relapse, chances are your MS will not become progressive. However I do have friends who have had MS for decades see it go from relapsing remitting to progressive. In fact, one of my friends had MS for 20 years without it being problematic. But one morning he woke up and found he could no longer walk. He underwent chemo and now appears to be improving. Then I have friends who have had MS for decades and never missed a day of work. I have had MS for twenty years. For ten years all I had were minor symptoms. But then I went blind in my left eye, had severe cognitive problems and could not walk without a cane. While I almost made a full recovery, I know full well that MS is highly unpredictable. I have had doctors tell me that my MS will probably not be a major problem. But I know that they HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW."

what are the side effects of stopping the simvastatin (zocor) drug? my mother has stopped this and i wondered if there were any long or short term effects.

julius replied: "probably none... But her cholesterol will go up and puts her at an increase risk for heart disease. Why did she stop?"

mnvikes8484 replied: "there might be a little bit of rebound of her cholesterol (it could raise up a little quicker, especially if she had a high dose) but i dont think there are any serious effects. double check with a doc or pharmacist"

Amy P replied: "No side effects related to abrupt cessation of the drug. But her cholesterol will go back up to pretreatment levels. Good luck."

WAS THE DRUG ZOCOR BAN? was the colestrol drug zocor ban by the afdc?

lray1957 replied: "I hope not, I take it every day."

What prescription and non prescription drugs interact negatively with grapefruit juice? Prescription drugs that I am interested in the interaction are prinyvil for blood pressure, zocor for cholesterol, niacin 500 mg (non prescription) and metoprolol for heart beat regulation.

Krissy replied: "I think lipitor for cholesterol so I'm sure your cholesterol med will also interfere. Don't think blood pressure pills would cause problems, but I would call your pharmacist, they can tell you all about it."

franklinsmoke replied: "do not take any pills with grapefruit juice. allow two hours after taking pills and you can drink grapefruit juice without any interaction with the drugs."

Notyour B replied: "All drugs that inhibit or need the P450 enzyme for metabolism. What comes first to my mind are birth control pills, and the zocor most certainly (if I remember right, zocor is a P450 inhibitor). A pharmacist will have the complete list. However, bad interactions have been observed only for people who drank a lot of grapefruit juice (1L + per day), during several days). So if you are moderate, there shouldn't be any problem."

Penn1200 replied: "i take zocor in the evening and enjoy ocassional grapefruit in the morning-no problem"

is anyone having side effects from taking the cholesterol drug zocor....like leg weakness? was taking zocor and within 6 months...started having severe muscle weakness...no longer taking it and not getting any better

DEJ2 replied: "My dad had alot of muscle pain while he was taking it, mostly in his arms. It took awhile for it to go away. My understanding is that it affected his liver enzymes, which it does in alot of people. Thats why you have to have your liver checked regularly while taking it or any of the statin drugs."

Doctor J replied: "Muscle weakness is a common side-effect of Zocor and other statin drugs. These drugs work by blocking the function of an enzyme called 'HMG-CoA-reductase'. This enzyme is needed to synthesize cholesterol and another very important molecule in the body called "Coenzyme Q10" (CoQ 10). CoQ 10 is vital for energy production in the cells and is one of the body's most powerful antioxidants. "Good doctors" (if they prescribe these dangerous drugs at all) will regularly 'check' your Coenzyme Q10 levels with a blood test. I encourage you to have your Coenzyme Q10 levels tested. You may need fairly high doses for several months to bring your cellular levels back to normal. However, sorry to say, sometimes the type of damage you describe may be permanent. Unfortunately, doctors today are literally prescribing these drugs 'like candy'. All of the hundreds of millions of dollars spent advertising them on t.v. doesn't help the over use problem. It is important to understand that more than half of all persons with heart attacks have 'normal' cholesterol levels and elderly people with higher than normal cholesterol levels (but not extremely high levels) actually live longer than elderly with 'normal' cholesterol levels. Cholesterol has become a 'mania' in medicine. Fifty years from now, we will look back on this period and laugh at the imbalanced thinking it entails. Sorry to hear about your problem. Hope you are able to get some relief from these suggestions. Good luck!"

donnarainingsky replied: "my husband takes crestor and has muscle aches very bad sometimes, i believe that is a side effect of cho. meds."

Whch is better for lowering cholesterol? Lipitor or Zocor? Considering both are statin drugs, is one better than the other? My sister's doctor said Zocor is not good because it affects the kidneys. Is that true?

chapaton replied: "Actually both drugs can adversely affect the kidneys. They are in the same family. They have almost identical side effects. You can use either, if you react to one, you may not react to the other one. Both are equally as effective, it just depends on the person's tolerance, and physiology. If one doesn't work, then one of the others in the same family is implimented before you go to something like Zetia, which is in a different family. The side effect for the statins that needs to be worried about is Rhabdomyolysis. That's why they say, bad muscle pain, etc... call the doc. Because myoglobin, which in in the breakdown of the muscles (rhabdo) can cause kidney failure, because it is a kidney toxin."

lucyfire24 replied: "Well, both medicines have side effects, but one may work better in some people than the other. I don't think that Zocor would be on the market if it were that widely known to cause kidney problems. Many medications affects the kidneys if taken in too great a dosage. If your sister is concerned, she should get a second opinion from another MD."

Amina replied: "I would honestly recommend that you contact a doctor about this because I do not want to give the wrong advice."

xjoizey replied: "they both do, I take Zocor. as long as you get blood tests every 6 months to check out the kidneys you will be ok. fish oil really helps lower cholestrol . 1000 mg a day"

murkymom replied: "they both have adverse reactions i think it really depends on your body mechanics if she's really concerned then get a second opinion"

Dale replied: "I have used both and they both can harm the liver. But I don't know about the kidneys get a second opinion."

jayaraman replied: "Both Lipitor and Zocor are from Vastatin group only. Lipitor is of Atorvastatin Calcium and Zocar is of Simvastatin. One of the side affect of Zocar is muscular pain or cramps or weakness - it is generally called muscular breakdown. Muscular Breakdown leads to Kidney damage. So your doctor has rightly advised and Zocar is not good, if you the patient gets muscular breakdown. IF NOT it is safe to have and not damage to Kidney will be done. There are many other groups for controlling Cholesterol and it can be given. Consult the doctor and he will give a suitable substitute depending upon the test results and symptoms of the patient. These medicines should not be administration or stopped if the patient is taking just on mouth say by someone. Additional information on Zocar: ZOCOR is a prescription tablet and isnt right for everyone, including women who are nursing or pregnant or who may become pregnant, and anyone with liver problems. Unexplained muscle pain or weakness could be a sign of a rare but serious side effect and should be reported to your doctor right away. ZOCOR may interact with other medicines or certain foods, increasing your risk of getting this serious side effect. So tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking. Please read additional important"

SandyKIT replied: "Statins can actually protect the kidneys from damage caused by heart failure and diabetes (mom has both conditions). The complications of both can be terrible. Mom was on Liptor for years, then her cholesterol went up, and the docs increased it to 40mg. A month later the muscle wasting complications occured, and mom was feeling like she had arthritis in the shoulder and hip. They removed her from both and started her on Vytorin. Now she has no muscle problems, can use her shoulder and hip, and the cholesterol is below 180 (the commercial about controlling two kinds of cholesterol is so true -- Liptor couldn't control it alone). Your sister's mileage may vary, but please investigate and find the best medication that has the least side effects. It's all about the quality of ones life and enjoying it, not be bedridden and in pain."

Gerald S replied: "I took both Lipitor and Crestor and had to stop both because of muscle and joint pain that can lead to kidney failure. She should closely monitor her muscles and joint for pain and at the first sign, report it to her doctor."

fairy53042000 replied: "I don't know, but it's a good question, I too am on Zoloft, & the new policy at work is random drug testing, I have never done any illegal drugs, but i can't wait to hear the answers to your question"

Where are the generic ED drugs? Some ED drugs have been in the marketplace for almost a decade. Most insurance plans don't cover the cost of these medications which are very expensive. How come there are no generic equivalent drugs on the market that would cut the cost to consumers. Other drugs had generics in only a few years., such as Zocor.

The not so funny troll replied: "because all of the pill form ED drugs (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) are new. The older drugs are actually injections, and they have to be compounded at a pharmacy which makes them expensive"

John S replied: "The patent is still valid for these medications until they expire. Viagra's patent expires in either 2011 or 2013 I believe, however a year or so before the generic companies will probably bid to Pfizer to have their generic released ahead of the others even while the patent is still active."

Are there any adverse effects when taking Zocor? Zocor, Diet Drug

karla w replied: "I take zocor and it is for high cholestoral. I have had no adverse side effects from it. but I am not a doctor and everyone is not the same. ask your doctor."

idontknowitall replied: "As with most medications, there are always potential side effects. With zocor the most common are; headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence (yes, that's right), increased risk for upper respiratory infections and potential harm to your liver (usually monitored with blood tests). Zocor (or simvastatin), may also interact with other medication like some blood thinners or heart medicine, ask your doctor. Of course, what is the potential harm to having high cholesterol ..."

going from Lipitor to generic Zocor? My insurance will no longer pay for Lipitor, so I had to go on Zocor(generic). I was on 5mg of Lipitor and am now on 10mg of Zocor. They are 2 different drugs, so is that the equivalent? Or is there really no way to compare the two.

ridiculouslycurious replied: "some generics, such as zocor and lovastatin are really the same except that the mgs. need to be adjusted to be equivalent in strength. i recently went through this too. don't worry, unless you begin to feel side affects. some people are allergic to the different fillers/salts used by different manufacturers. otherwise, there's no difference. mfgrs. of generic drugs don't spend billions on advertising. that's why they can sell their products cheaper. even so, the mark up on generics is thievery in my opinion. did you know that you can get most generic drugs at walmart for four dollars for a one month supply?"

Bob S replied: "switching meds just to save money can be a nightmare. have you check the prices for generics online? Not sure what you are paying but I know I have been able to get some meds for much less online. Below is the link to the site I use. good luck"

Logan A replied: "I amusing generic Lipitor, I wouldn't want to switch these meds, have you talked to your doc about it? The site where I ordered my has both as much as I can see "
