Woke up with ringing in ear. Tinnitus?? Hi all,
I woke up this morning with ringing in my left ear. It's driving me insane. I did some research and found the symtom tinnitus. I thought it was ear wax build up, so I cleaned it with a over the counter ear wax remover, but the ringing still occurs. What I have found out about tinnitus is that it can be also caused to over-dose of caffeine. I have taken a lot of caffeine the past 2 days and I also drink about 5 beers a week. Could it be tinnitus that's buzzing me? This ringing has happened to me before, only when I got water in my hear from showering and it would cure itself in a week. What can I do to make it better? I just want the ringing to stop. Please help.
I do listen to music moderately loud in the car and at home, but not extremely loud that I can't hear anything else. Also I do not take aspirin at all or any sort of pain releivers.
yes. i also smoke about 8 cigarettes per day.
laney415 replied: "Call your doctor. You may have something in your ear that they need to remove. Do you really want to listen to the ringing for a week just to SEE if it goes away?"
Curious replied: "Tinnitus is chronic - it never goes away, so if the ringing stops it isn't tinnitus. There are many things that can cause ringing - taking too much aspirin will do it too.
There is no cure for Tinnitus."
SmartOne replied: "That doesn't happen from caffeine... Do you listen to loud music a lot? Your eardrums react like that if you have been, they won't classify it as tinnitis unless it gets a little worse. Stop listening to the loud music for about a month, it should go away."
Bluealt replied: "Call your doctor as soon as possible."
Axewielderx replied: "I recently had this problem myself.I read up on it and it seems there is no way to rid of it.However, you can mask it possibly.
You have to do the water test. That is done by running water in a sink.If the buzzing seems to disappear when the water is running then your tinitus can be masked.
I found my Tinnitus had went away after I took a nap and it was partially blocked by the water.
You should avoid alcohol, caffiene and smoking as they only contribute to Tinnitus.

hearkat replied: "Hello. I'm an Audiologist.
Any sound inside your head is called tinnitus - it's a very broad, generalized term. Sometimes people hear ringing if there is a blockage of the ear -- from wax, negative pressure restricting eardrum movement, fluid build-up behind the eardrum, or an ear infection. In most cases, once the blockage is removed/treated and the ear has recovered, the ringing goes away.
Does your ear actually feel plugged? You don't mention a clogged sensation or fullness or hearing loss. Just because you used an at-home wax removal kit doesn't mean there isn't wax. The only way to know for sure is to have a doctor look in there. If there is fluid behind the eardrum, it may not be visible through the otoscope; the best way to measure the eardrum movement is through a quick and easy test called a tympanogram. It simply changes the air pressure in the ear canal and measure if/how the eardrum responds.
Tinnitus is also one of many Migraine Aura and may occur simultaneously with a headache or separately. Caffeine is a known Migraine trigger, so it can trigger/increase tinnitus for some people. In addition, some people who grind their teeth or have problems with their jaw joint (TMJ) can also have tinnitus.
Noise exposure and systemic causes of tinnitus, like smoking or certain medications, typically effect both ears. One might be worse than the other, but almost never is only one ear effected. None of those herbal supplements have been scientifically proven to reduce or cure tinnitus. Ginko Biloba is the ONLY substance to date that has some scientific correlation to tinnitus reduction in SOME patients.
More serious conditions can cause tinnitus, but usually have other associated symptoms like dizziness or significant hearing loss. Some of these can be Meniere's Disease, Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Acoustic Neuroma.
As you can see, tinnitus is like headache or fever as a symptom - it can be something minor or very serious. The key is to find the underlying cause, if possible. Therefore, it is crucial to have an accurate diagnosis made ASAP.
See your family physician and/or an otolaryngologist -- The sooner you receive treatment, the more effective it will be."
Mike Oxlong replied: "hi, i have recently gained tinnitus myself from listening to loud music and drinking alcohol. the first thing you need to know is anyone who tells you that it's permanent doesnt know what there talking about and their advice should be disregarded. Tinnitus is a side effect of many many things from either a tumour in your ear (which i would recommened getting an MRI to rule this out as the liklyhood of this will 99/100 come back negative and thats one less thing you have to worry about) to damaged kidney's or nerve damage. if you've sprained your neck that can also causes a buzzing or rumbling in your ear. Dont panic as this will EVENTUALLY get to the point where you barely even notice it and stress is a key factor in making it worse, start avoiding any stressful situations like the plauge, it is also of the MOST importance to continue going on with your life as tho you normally would and to stop thinking about the ringing as this is the brains natural defense mechanism. By that i mean theres a VERY high chance that its not your ears that are ringing .. in fact they have most likely stopped however the brain has issuded it as a "threat" ...an invasive sound that should not be there .. much like the "phantom-limb" that people get after having a leg/arm amputated, therefore your brain keep looping the sound over and over to keep it upfront (Have you noticed how when you FIRST wake up in the morning the ringing is not there for a few seconds then returns louder the usual?...or that you really dont hear it unless you think about it?). Discontinue ANY form of alcohol immediatly and avoid caffine as these are are stimulating or damaging to the nerves which will in turn create the sound to become more noticable. Also if you smoke ull gain a large benefit from quitting asap as it's obviously not good for your health and your immune system will exort the majority of its effort in removing this first as it is life threatening ,in term leaving less to heal whatever may be wrong with your ears/kindney's. Discontinue listening to loud music as the ears take damage from anything over 40DcB which can be equivilent to passing traffic on a freeway, and protect your ears during any loud sounds. Also keep your ears dry, check with a physician to see if theres a puncture in one of you're ear drums and to have them cleaned out if there isnt. You can use a signle drop of rubbing alcohol after showering to dry your ears more thoughouly and faster IF theres no puncture of course ( i recommend having your ears "profesionally" cleaned once ever 2-3 months and NEVER use Q-tips as they will just push the wax further back.) Look at any change in the sound/ level / or frequency as "GOOD" this is important as most likly the change is due to you system healing itself ( the body naturally wants to heal itself). So for now remember to STAY POSSITIVE, AVOID STRESS, DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL, AVOID THE USE OF "ANY" NERVE STIMULANTS, AND ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR HEARING FROM ANY LOUD NOISES. oh and its a good idea to avoid complete silence as you''re brain will need an alternate sound to keep itself off of tinnitus .. whistle or talk to yourself if you have to. you're going to find that ull be senstive to certain high frequency sounds i.e. computers or T.V's and this might aggrivate it a bit, and keep in mind that at times ull perceive outside high frquencies as coming from your ears making it appear worse.. so be wary of that, get a good amount of sleep and believe it or not going to bed at a regular time everynight will be of value as this increases ur digestive and immune systems abilities, and fatigue is HELL on tinnitus .. if ur started to get tired from over work TAKE A BREAK,. drink water or juice then go back to it. The most signifigant thing you can do overall is lifestyle changes as a healthier living is of the UTMOST importance above all else, eat healthy and get regular exercise (not over exerting yourself of course .. walking for an hour or 2 a day or some light jogging is a very good start) as this will bring more oxygen and help clean your blood which is what stores your immune system, and will increase bloodflow to the ears/brain - healthier blood / more bloodflow = faster/better healing abilities. Wish you the best of luck , from one tinnitus suffer to the next. (P.S. when i first gained tinnitus i freaked out and made it alot worse myself by panicing and always "checking" on it .. dont check it more then twice a day .. when i had it checked at an audiologist the ringing rang in at a whooping 70Db's and a couple months after changing life styles and not worrying about it anymore it went down to just over 12. the last time i had it checked they say there found no sound at all however i can still hear it at night .. this is proof that the brain in fact DOES label it and keep it upfront .. it doesnt want you to forget about it cause its a "threat" or so it sees it as. im completly optimistic that it'll fade eventually and thats the mentallity you need to take up) .. there is NO QUICK CURE (aside from a tumor which can be surgically removed) so dont expect it to be .. healing takes time but WILL happen, the healthier you are the faster and more thourough it will be. Do not sit around all day as this is NOT GOOD for you at all get up n go for a walk , remember to bring a bottle of water or somthing healthy to drink with you, keep yourself hydrated. And one last thing if you're having trouble sleeping as i certanly did, dont panic as this too WILL come in time but for now id suggest drinking a warm glass of milk before bed and maybe eating turkey as these have natural sleeping properties and helped me get a couple hours at even the worse of times.
Happy healings

Remember, when you suffer from tinnitus it is best to avoid any kind of vasoconstrictor - like caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate), alcohol (those beers), salt (do not add to your foods and stay away from foods high in salt), and aspirin. There are certain medications that can exacerbate your tinnitus so always tell you doctor before he/she prescribes any new medications that you suffer from tinnitus. Stress and fatigue can also cause your tinnitus to be worse, so be sure to reduce your amount of stress and get adequate rest.
Tinnitus is a symptom of a problem - and that problem should be identified before you can do anything to control your tinnitus. Check out which is the website to the American Tinnitus Association. How can I get the ringing to stop in my ears? Actually, it's only one ear, my right one. I have a feeling it was brought on by caffeine since I just had two energy drinks and is not in fact Tinnitus. But I can't get it to stop and it's driving me crazy. Please help!
Can tinnitus cause different sounds in each ear? Can tinnitus manifest itself as two different sounds in both ears? My left ear has had a high pitched ringing for years, and now my right ear has a low pulsing hum. Is this normal or is it something else? I am a 23 year old seemingly healthy male.
The pulsating hum is new .. maybe 1 month old.. and does not go with my heart beat - it is much slower. I take Claritin D daily, rarely use Motrin IB for back pain and never more than 400mg in a dose. I was on a Prednisone oral 10 day schedule starting with 50mg back in January, and I had a 40mg Kenalog injection in mid-February. I have cut caffeine out of my diet, and I quit smoking entirely (never more than 1 a day previously... usually 3 a week so not heavy.)
I can't figure this out! I have googled to no avail, and I am hesitant to go to the doctor because I am unemployed and have no insurance. When the left ear ringing began, they told me the ringing was permanent and to just live with it.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
I had a hearing test when I was 14 and the initial ringing started. They found minimal loss of hearing and said it was most likely from an ear infection and it may or may not be permanent.
Fast forward 9 years, I have taken great care with my ears. I have only been to maybe 4 or 5 indoor concerts with loud music lasting 1-2hrs each. I realized this was dumb and haven't gone to one in about 3 years. I even avoid movie theatres because the sound is too loud for my taste.
As for the medicine, I stopped taking Claritin-D and this problem started up. I had a congested left ear for a month which wouldn't clear and I took it daily during winter as well as Nasonex to clear that up. Could this be related?
I don't think this would be a big problem if it was sort of the same tune. Its like the opposite sound in my right ear and extremely annoying because it pulses and is hard to cover up.
madi_sangre replied: "I play the drums and I've got tinnitus, but its the same ringing sound in both ears. Maybe a little bit softer in the left one bit still a high pitched ringing. I've done some research and apparently tinnitus can be different sounds than a high pitched ringing, but im not sure if it would be different in each ear."
Munya Carr replied: "yes it can be different in each ear and I bet if you were able to cut some of those meds out, the tinnitus might go away..."
caliprincessjenn replied: "Yes, tinnitus certainly can sound different in each ear. The most common cause of it in otherwise healthy people is hearing loss. Have you ever had a hearing test? Do you have other symptoms like dizziness that feels like the room or ground are spinning or moving? Those kinds of symptoms could be suggestive of conditions such as Meniere's disease and other benign conditions.
Cutting caffeine and salt can sometimes help tinnitus, but many times there is no cure. The good news is that most people get used to it."
PAUL A replied: "Believe it or not stress is a major cause of tinnitus. If you have minimal hearing loss due to nerve damage from whatever cause, it will be multiplied by other stressors in your life. This is why Valium or similar is prescribed to help the condition. The Doctor is trying to manipulate with drugs the "stress" you may be experiencing from a stressful and ongoing condition..eg., no job, no money for bills, girlfriend leaving you... you get the picture.
Eliminate the stress and the nerves may have a chance to regenerate, and your hearing problems will diminish."
Hergest replied: "yes it can - I had tinnitus equally in both ears for 25 years and a year ago it suddenly got worse in my left ear for no reason and I developed hyperacusis as well (sensitivity to certain sound pitces). I get waves of sound as well as the normal buzzing.
I've had an MRI scan and have no underlying problem but I've been told I've just got to live with it. Certain things do make it worse though; alcohol is the worst but stress and caffeine can make it worse as well - anything that effects the nervous system basically."
Too much Aspirin HAVE RINGING IN THE EARS? i take BC powders several times a day to help ease my fibromyalgia but sometimes I go overboard. I had a heart attack 9 mo. ago and aspirin is a part of my daily meds, but I take way more than recommended. Can this cause another heart attack? I take about 6 or 7 powders a cay and each contain 650mg of aspirin and 33mgs of caffeine. I know its not good but how bad is it actually?
Lissie replied: "If the doctor doesnt reccomend it, it's dangerous. The end."
Nashvegas replied: "That sounds way too much. I'm surprised you haven't burnt a hole in your stomach from all of the aspirins. You need to talk to your Dr. immediately."
Why do I get this ringing in my ears? It can't be from damage, it's ALWAYS been there, even when I was 3 I remember when if I listened I could always hear a faint ringing (but I get used to it and don't notice most of the time).
It is noticable when I consume caffeine, am sleep deprived or am otherwise, (for lack of a better word) "off".
It doesn't bother me or anything, I mean it's always been there, but I would like to know what causes it.
I have low blood pressure, pretty much perfect

mrtzmk replied: "from birth till adult hood children and teens can hear a very high frequency ringing similar to a dog whistle but with a slightly lower frequency. It is generated by electronic mechanisms (i.e. Televisions, Radio, Computer, and other small and large consumer electronics) it should fade over time because into adulthood our ears take a certain amount of damage from everyday life and we begin to lose the ability to hear the ultra high frequency noises. It is not a noticeable hearing ability decline but the sound should fade over time. My guess is whenever you heard this noise you where in the vicinity of some electronic which was powered on or some electronic that might even be built into your home like and air conditioner unit or controller."
I am 24 y/o and when I work out I feel a little dizzy, tingling on the backside of my head, ringing ears? I am a 23 years old male and couple a weeks ago I found out that I have a high blood pressure.I have been working out for about 5 years now and I used many different supplements like creatine, protein, amino acids and caffeine staff. Three weeks ago I didn;t feel good and I went to the ER cuz my BP was 150/98 and they did a blood test and said that I am ok and there is nothing wrong with my kidneys, heart, liver and I am healthy, but couple a days after same thing happend and I had to go back to the ER with the same BP readings. I got very scared, they checked me out again and they said anxiety is the problem. The doc gave me Xanax for the anxiety and said that I ll be fine .Next day I called cardiologist and went to see him, he sent me for additional blood tests and urine tests and EKG and ECHO cardiogram also. When the results came he called me and he said that everything is compliteley normal. My blood pressure is ok now it stays right around 130/77.I stoped all supplements but I continue working out .I am not taking Xanax any more..but when i work out I feel a little dizzy and I feel like numbness on the back of my head ... it ;s not a pain it;s like tingling on the skin of my head .. I also have some ringing in my ears but I got it for a long time maybe a year ...please give me an advise....thank you

Why are my ears ringing? Folks, this may sound strange-I know the right answer SHOULD be 'see your doctor' - but I wonder about the acuteness of the problem or whether it's really something to worry about. In addition, our company just switched health plans to an HMO (again-third time in 3 years). therefore I must start with a new doctor - I know it will take a while to get in and get all the records transferred so am looking for ideas.
Here's what's up. I can't say it's in my ears or what - but in my head, there's a very high-pitched, constant noise. The volume seems to go up and down, and when there's noise around me, it is drowned out.
I don't know if it's caffeine, I drink a travel mug of coffee and maybe a cup of cocoa each day.
Maybe it's stress? I do a lot of sitting and crocheting or needlework at this time of year, so I notice tight muscles in shoulders and my arms will fall asleep (I am thinking that might be the start of carpal tunnel). In previous years I haven't noticed this - and it only bothers me when it's quiet, especially when tryingt to fall asleep.
It started sunday afternoon and hasn't stopped since. I've put a heating pad on my neck and shoulders to loosen my muscles - that didn't help. I've tried to slow my heart rate by thinking about it and being as calm as can be- that doesn't help.
Any suggestions as to what I might be able to do to try to figure out what it is or anyone know what usually makes the noises in your head like this?
It's dry in the office where I work due to the winter and the heat being on. It's sometimes dry at home, but the humidifier was on Sunday, and the humidity was up in the house.
Not sure if anyone else has ever had this before - but if you squeeze your eyes real tight and clench your jaw, maybe you get a short noise you 'hear' from inside your head - that's waht it is. I am not clenching my teeth at all so it's not that.
I am serious about this - not trying to dig for stupid answers - if you have some real ideas or experiences, I'd appreciate hearing them.
Thanks!
For the answers so far, I don't listen to loud music, there's nothing I do that's really all that loud. I work in an office that's pretty quiet - and at home, there are no children or other things that are loud.
Perhaps the sugar, then - but I don't consume much more sugar than usual lately. Perhaps trying to cut way down on the sugar though. Today it's more annoying than yesterday.
Reading this website on Tinnitus, I find that many of the things it says that cause it I don't have. In fact, the two things it says help it - magnesium and potassium, I have always taken - magnesium to suppress allergies and potassium to avoid leg cramps. One would think I shouldn't have it. The only thing it says might be a cause that I DO have is stress. Lots of stress in my life.
We'll see if anyone else comes up with other possibilities - if not, I'll chose a best answer this afternoon.
Thanks to everyone so far!

Single-sided Deafness... (left ear)? does anyone have this same problem and is also suffering from tinnitus from their hearing ear? I visited a doctor about my hearing and unfortunetly I can't get my hearing back in my left ear and now i'm facing hearing problems in my right ear due to tinnitus (ringing in the ear) but the doctor's told me it's due to stress, caffeine intake etc. however I have refrained from all of these and my tinnitus dosent seem to be affected by those things, instead it's rather random it sometimes grow loud enough that I have a tough time hearing people. sometimes it goes away and life becomes normal... but this is 50/50. It frustrates me cause it makes me seem very reserved and it's hard to explain my hearing situation to every new person I meet and it becomes really awkward when I pretend I heard what they said and give them such a random answer that they'd look at me confused. If there is anyone facing this same problem how did you overcome it? I daresay I might go completely deaf in the future

Does caffeine cause these symptoms...? I am making an appointment to see a doctor, but recently I have been getting strong pressure on the left side of my head. Kind of near the temple, but more far back on the side. It does NOT hurt. Just pressure that comes and goes. Also, my ears have been ringing for the last 2 nights when I go to sleep. For the past week, my caffeine intake has gone up A LOT. I have been drinking 2 cups of strong espresso per day plus sometimes a coke. (As opposed to maybe one cup of coffee every OTHER day in the past. I've started drinking more caffeine because my baby is three months old and I need it!!) Could the caffeine be causing these things? Maybe? Like I said I am still going to go to the doctor.
Anna Liz replied: "I think it could. I get really bad headaches from caffeine withdrawal, and I don't even drink a lot of coffee. We all react differently to caffeine. I also had a friend who had ringing in the ears from acid reflux and drinking coffee made the ringing a lot worse."
Ripping noise in my ear? This might be related to my earlier question about the ringing in my ear but i though i would ask it as a new one.
I sometimes hear a ripping noise in my ear. It is normally when i am emptying the dish washer so i don't know if it is the bending over or the loid noise of dish's clanging together.
Anyone any idea what it is or if it is related to the ringing in my ears that i sometimes get?
Oh and if it helps i am 18 not on medication but i do smoke and drink a lot of caffeine. Someone in my earlier question suggest these points may make a difference.
SusansHusband replied: "Could very possibly be tinnitus - below is a link to the British Tinnitus Association website . On the home page you can click on a link to hear examples of tinnitus. I get the very high pitched whine, and the low sort of buzzing noise.

little-miss-olive replied: "could be tinitis and bending over could bring it on by affecting your inner ear but if its only when your emptying the dish washer then its likely to be the dishes banging you could just be sensitive to lloud noises"
