Erythromycin is available in 250 mg capsules.? ....Erythromycin is available in 250 mg capsules. The doctor orders Erythromycin 250 mg every 4 hours x 4. How many grams of the medication should the child receive? please show your work
Sonyka K replied: "One dose is: 4250mg = 1000mg = 1g
That dose is repeated every 4 hours. That's 6 times per day.
So the child is to receive 6g per day."
How long does Erythromycin stay in your body? Erythromycin the antibiotic. Not delayed released capsule. Just a pill.
does anyone know if this drug cause dehydration?
sw replied: "It should be gone from the body in 12-24 hours"
PharmacistMike replied: "Erythromycin's half-life (the amount of time it takes for half of the drug to leave the body) is 1.5 hours. The basic rule is that a drug is totally eliminated after 5 half-lives so 7.5 hours and for all pharmacological purposes the drug is gone."
SZO replied: "The half-life, the time your body eliminates the medication, is 1.5 hours. It could cause dehydration when the person taking it is experiencing the side effects such as vomiting and diarhhea."
Erythromycin no expiration date, had it for 3 months, still safe? I had bronchitis in April and it seems to have slightly come back, same symptoms, I smoke marijuana once or twice a week and ever since I had bronchitis my first time years ago, I have gotten it once more just in this past April, it seems that my lungs are weaker due to the bronchitis and the smoking doesn't help it, can I still take my Erythromycin? I still have around 10 capsules left from my prescription in April and there is NO expiration date anywhere on it which is why I am asking on here. I have read around that Erythromycin lasts a really long time and wont cause harm if taken even if the prescription is years old, just wont be as effective. Mine is only 3 months old so I thought why go out and buy more if I can still use up the rest of my old prescription?
peanut replied: "Yes, as long as it has not been exposed to hot weather."
gazeygoo replied: "You shouldn't have any left, not finishing antibiotics is the reason we have untreatable superbugs out there. You need to see your doctor."
cryptoxmit replied: "Gazeygoo hit the nail on the head ... plus the remaining dose isn't sufficient to "self treat" yourself ..."

Erythromycin 250mg 4 x a day doseage? I have a boil in my ear and my doctor has prescribed me the above antibiotics. I have read the instruction leaflet and it says that the usual doseage is 1 capsule every 6 hours taken with a meal. I can have one with my breakfast at 7.30am, then one with my lunch at 1.30pm, then another with dinner at 7.30pm but the last will have to be taken at 1.30am in the morning but how can I have a meal at that time with my capsule???? Is there anyone on here in the know as to whether you actually have to take them dead on 6 hours a day as this could become a bit of a nightmare!! I have to take them for the next 7 days.
Trollkepr replied: "Erythromycin can be tough on the stomach so they have you eat with it. I took 500mg 2times a day when I was on it. I bet if you ask your doctor they will let you take two pills during one of your meals so you only have to take it 3 times a day. Call the doctor and ask first."
VICKI replied: "Well I think I would take it with some supper just before bed. I have taken these before and they gave me awful diarrheoa, which is one of the side effects, and I think this must be why you take them with food rather than on an empty tummy. I think you will be fine taking them nigh on 6 hours, I dont think an hour or two either side will make much difference, the main thing is that you ARE taking them. Don't worry. If you are still worried, though, why not give the chemist a ring or even NHS Direct. The are very good. 0845 46 47."
suarez_stacey replied: "4 x a day doesnt mean u need to take it every 6 hrs...250mg is not a lethal dose its actually the least dose...yea its anti biotic so u need to take it wid food...try.....one around 7am after breakfast....one around 12pm after lunch, one around 6pm after dinner and one around 11pm take almost midnyt snack b4 goin to bed....just do it for 7 days...."
pantomime replied: "Over the years I have taken erythromycin (known in Australia as eryc) on a number of occasions for severe tonsil/throat infections. I did not stick rigidly to the directions - 6 hourly etc. There were no problems. Just do what is practical and most convenient for yourself. You will probably do yourself more harm by stressing over a missed capsule than you will by actually missing a dose at the exact time. Try to schedule your doses around first one in the morning and last one at night with equal gaps during the day."
Vahid replied: "You can take your antibiotic capsules with milk, or a glass of water. That would be a prevention from stomach irritation. If you still fear, after taking the capsule do not lie for a while."
Natalie replied: "They don't have to be bang on 6 hours between, but the more regular you take it, the better. Just take the last one before bed, you don't need to set an alarm in the night or early hours.
Try 7, 12, 6 then bedtime. The bedtime one take with a milky drink and a couple of biscuits, you don't need to have a full meal with every one."
The left side of my neck and throat is very sore, is this viral or something more? Two weeks ago I saw the doctor because I thought I had a strep infection. The strep test came back negative, but he put me on an antibiotic because he said it looked like I might have an infection. So I took Erythromycin capsules for 10 days. My throat started hurting again the other day, but this time, only on the left side. Thing is, my NECK hurts on the left side too. Even touching it hurts. In addition, I have some sort of post-nasal drip, but its dark brown/yellow in color. I've been taking Tylenol, gargling with salt water, and drinking plenty of fluids (including tea with honey). I don't have health insurance - so I want to avoid paying to see the doctor again for him to tell me its nothing.
Is there anything else I can do to help? Should I see the doctor again? Does this sound like an ear infection? Someone suggested that to me because the pain in my neck radiates up and back toward my ear. Maybe allergies (I do take Zyrtec daily).
Thank you!

Joseph M replied: "you could continue the allergy medicine. but the thing is with infections, when teh doctors give you the medicine, and the infection seems to have gone away you could still have had the germs on your tooth brush which you could have reinfected yourself. or you could of still had the infection when you stopped the meds. i would go back to the doctor if you feel really poorly"

Trouble taking antibiotics-can I crush them? I have to take a course of gastro-resistant antibiotics called Tiloryth ( Erythromycin) 250mg.
My GP has prescribed them for a severe cough.
Problem is I have a phobia of swallowing capsules and these are big plasticy looking ones.
I know it`s pathetic-but I normally crush them 1st.
However these say not to crush or chew on the packet.
Is it safe to open the caps and swallow the contents?
Thanks
permaglo18 replied: "To be on the safe side I would check with my pharmacist."
someone else replied: "As long as they are not "time release" (call your doctor or pharmacist to find out), then you can probably crush them. But you should call your doctor or pharmacist first to be sure. One easy phone call for some free quick advice.
But crush them only if they are "tablets". If they are capsules, then pull them apart (for two-piece capsules) or cut them in half (for sealed capsules) and extract the contents. The capsule shell itself typically is not made from any active ingredients.

See that? You didn't even have to call!
Thanks, Dr. Ranishwaura!"
ranishwaura_md replied: "The enteric-coating (plasticy looking thing) of a capsule is there for a specific purpose. It protects erythromycin base from inactivation by stomach acidity. The drug has to reach from stomach to small intestine in intact form. Coating gets dissolved there & erythromycin is absorbed into the blood.
Don't crush or open the contents of the capsule. They will be neutralised in stomach even before reaching site of absorption i.e. small intestine.
My advice is try taking the capsule (it is not as hard as it appears to be) or consult your GP whether you can take erythromycin in another form like chewable tablet or liquid."
krisscherer replied: "Unfortunately, it is recommended that you DO NOT open, chew or crush the capsules as that could effect the effectiveness of this particular antibiotic. A good method that I use to swallow large pills: take a good size drink of water but don't swallow yet. Next, tilt your head all the way back, open your mouth, drop the pill in the center, close mouth, tilt head back to normal and then swallow. With the capsule floating around freely in all the water in your mouth it makes it so much easier for it to go easily down your throat with all the water surrounding it. Hope this helps. Oh, and don't forget to take the entire prescription until it is finished.......even if you find you are starting to feel better. It can sometimes take up to four days before antibiotics build up enough in the blood stream to start being effective."
happiness seeker replied: "no it's not right to open a caps or chewing a tablet,
a tablet may only be split ONLY IF it is designed for such. usually it has a groove on its surface indicating that it could be split.
my advice to u to ask ur GP/Pharmacist for another pharmaceutical form i.e: suspension or divided smaller doses."

Barbra replied: "The only thing that I can tell you is to take the medications as instructed. Drink plenty of fluids to clean your system. Eat. Take your temperature and notify doctor if it is high (100 and above) for very long. Use good judgment.
And, keep in close touch with your doctors. Let them know what is going on; especially any changes that they don't know about. They can't help you if they don't know. By keeping in touch will help you greatly.
Take care and follow instructions. Get well soon."
