what is the usual dose of fluconazole for yeast infection of the body not vaginal ( for ex. intestinal yeast? infections). I know that up to 200 mg of fluconazole is given for vagianl yeast infections and that it is only a one time dose, but i would like to know what is the dose given for bodily organ yeast. Is it just a one time dose or are there many more?

jfb replied: "For a systemic candidal infection it is possible to take 200mg every day for 7 days."

Nursy replied: "I had a yeast infection in my breasts because my baby got thrush and the dosage was 250mg, one dose, one pill. I've heard as much as 400mg for a loading dose and then 100mg every day for a week or 10 days... it depends on the dr and where exactly the infection is I suppose."

tikababy replied: "I have never heard of that I am going to have to google on that one sorry I can't help you with this one."

TKDMAN121 replied: "The most common dose is 200mg in one dose for the first day and 100mg to 200mg a day for anywhere between 7 and 10 days. There is really not enough information to answer your question without knowing the site of the infection or the causative organism. If this is about you then you REALLY need to see your physician. The reason is that other than Vaginal infections or the occasional eye infection systemic yeast infections are the result of an opportunistic organism. That is there is some underlying cause that allowed the yeast to set up housekeeping. The differential diagnosis can be a number of bacterial infections all the way to HIV. Please consult your physician."

Dr Chris Steele, TheFamilyGP.com replied: "It depends what you mean by bodily organ yeast infection. I'm a doctor and i'm still not sure what you mean! Nevertheless, the doseage for fluconazole actually depends on where you have the fungal infection, and what is causing you this fungal infection. You really must not depend on answers from people on yahoo answers - you have to discuss this with your own physician, who will know your full medical history and the reasons why you have been prescribed this drug. I would love to be able to give you a concise reply, but the doseages of fluconazole depend so much on the cause of your fungal infection - see your doctor!!"

how long does fluconazole actually take to start reducing the symptoms for a yeast infection? I have never had a yeast infection before, unfortunately i was prescribed some antibiotics for a urinary tract infection, and the side effect was lo and behold...a yeast infection! I was given fluconazole by my doctor, but the itching that accompanies a yeast infection along with the nasty looking white, thick discharge has taken a while to dissipate. It is now, the fourth day since i took the fluconazole and my symptoms barely seem to be improving...so, i was wondering if normally fluconazole takes a while before it begins clearing up the uncomfortable symptoms that come with a yeast infection. I've read information on this, and the majority states that it DOES indeed take about 3-5 days to start making some serious improvements...is this really the case?

lauren0531 replied: "Call your doctor, you should have felt so relived the next day after starting it...it does take 3-5 days for the full result to be felt, but you should really feel so much better by now...call your doctor, don't take baths, don't douche, eat a yogurt in the morning and at night, and maybe start using Monistat to relieve the itchiness and burning, plus maybe help your fluc. do its job."

beckinibeck replied: "I usually get results within 1 - 2 days. Consult your doc or pharmacist if you are not getting results after five days. You may need more than one pill. An over the counter yeast cream will also help with the itching right away."

emjayare69 replied: "Hello, having personally suffered the same thing you are, and also being a registered nurse that looks after people with infectious diseases ( which is infections) I do understand what you are going through. Firstly fluconazole is certainly a drug for yeast infections however it is an unusual one to be prescribed first off. Its almost like killing an ant with a huge sledgehammer!!! It does take at least three doses of any type of antibiotic or antifungal to see improvements. For this to really be fast though usually a pessary (small medicated capsule that is inserted into your vagina at night) is prescribed. The latest treatment is one pessary, once only, and the same medication that is in the pessary is also given as a cream to stop external inflammation and itching. This treatment however uses a different drug - cotrimoxazole. If you note.. the last part of that drug is "zole" which is the same as your fluconazole... it is in the same class of drugs. If you do not start seeing improvements then go back to your dorctor or to your pharmacy, I am here in Australia and the drug that I have mentioned can be bought over the counter. Good luck. I know how it feels."

BobbyeMc replied: "There are other Over-the-counter treatments such as 1-day vaginal supporities, 3-day creams and such, and other meds that clear up yeast infections. You may not get relief from fluconazole and will need another type (this happened to me). I'd call the doc back and ask for an oral med called Diflucan that you can take one dose to cure. In the mean time, relieve the itching with over-the-counter cortisone creams after a tipid bath (perhaps with oatmeal, about 1/2 cup in a wash cloth tied with a rubber band), it's very sootheing. Wear cotton panties and loose fitting clothing. Next time you have to have an antibiotic, ask for the Diflucan before hand. Good Luck!"

Not seeing any relief after taking Fluconazole (yeast infection) pill? Hi, I took the one-pill oral Fluconazole treatment yesterday at around 12 PM. I'm worried that it is not working because the yeast infection has gotten worse. Is there anyone who took this treatment and did not see its effectiveness? On a side note, I've been having this reoccuring infection on and off for over a year now and my doctor told me that this one-pill treatment should do the trick. These answers are great, but I'm going to wait for more opinions. Thanks, all. earwaxyness replied: "I had a yeast infection after using antibiotics. I also did the one time treatment with no results. I ended up going back to the store and getting the 3 day treatment which took care of the problem."

Robin S replied: "Hi, I took the same pill on Monday for the same thing. Yesterday it seemed way worse, but today, I think it's gone, am feeling much better. My Dr. gave me two pills and said to take another if I don't get relief. I've been battling this for about 3 months, but I'm better today, so am waiting to take the 2nd dose. Did you get any other answers?? I'd like to know what others have found in taking this also. Thanks"

purplegirl replied: "I took Diflucan once and it was a waste of $30...I now use a cream if I need to and a 7 day treatment as well as they work the best. Forget trying for the quick fix. Also try these things to help >avoid sugars >wear 100% cotton knickers and none at night >wash your bits with cool water only NO soap! >avoid tight pants These things combined with a good 7 day cream Clotrimazole (Caneston in Australia) is the one I like and you should be feeling relief in a couple of hours. "

I need to know what else can I use for a yeast infection besides fluconazole and monistat? I have used all of these things before and they keep coming back!

melanie j replied: "Look for FLORASTOR health foods,pharmacy.... has billions of good yeast and flora your body needs....."

treekgomon replied: "i heard vineger water is good to wash it"

tarheelgirl replied: "Talk to your doctor. Re-occuring yeast infections can be a sign of diabetes. Also, do the normal things: wear loose fitting cotton underwear, do not wear tight pants. use unscented toilet paper, do not use bubble bath. use only Pure-type soaps down there. Rinse well. At night if possible, sleep with no bottoms on so everything can "air out". Oh yeah: EAT YOGURT!!! Seriously, this works better than anything else. Good luck"

Jackie replied: "Go to your doc and get a prescription strength cream or pill. Also, if it isn't being relieved by those methods-it may not even be a yeast infection. It could be something else such as an STD."

christnp replied: "After you clear the yeast infection, start using something to prevent a new one. There are products that balance the vaginal pH (e.g. RepHresh) and products that increase the number of 'good bugs' that help keep your vaginal environment in balance, and fight against yeast overgrowth. I've used Norforms, but there are several products out there. Go for one that is a suppository, not an oral pill. After you have sex and after your period are both times of increased risk because your vaginal pH is altered. Be sure to use the products then, as well as on a routine basis for maintenance."

Is fluconazole (cures yeast infection) completely safe during pregnancy? This is my 2nd treatment for it. The 1st time i got a vaginal cream & now i was prescribed a Fluconazole tablet. I asked the dr assistant if it was safe & she said yes. Im kind of scared to take it.

MRS.B is having a baby! replied: "Not to worry at all It is totally safe! Any questions on meds you should call pregnancy risk line in your area, they have all the information of what is ok and not to take during your pregnancy. Especially if your doc prescribed it's not necessary for you to suffer take that pill immediately. EDIT to NUGIRL that website is full of crap information put there just to freak pregnant women out don't read that junk. They gave it to rabbits with twice the human dose. Rabbits weigh like 5-10 ppounds theyre like a 1/15th the human size seriously dont listen to that stuff."

Baby #1 due 2/20/09 replied: "my doc just prescribed me terconazole after 2 attempts of monistat. i think it should be fine!"

NUGirl. Due 3/14/09 replied: "This is a site that I live by: It offers comprehensive reviews of medical studies on a variety of drugs with respect to safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding. The link is specificallyt o fluconazole. It is a category C drug, and at least some animal studies suggest that it is not safe during pregnancy. In doses much higher than the standard human dose, animal studies find increased miscarriage, abortion, and fetal deformity. It is not known if fluconazole crosses the human placenta. Unfortunately it is not often enough proscribed to have studies with a high number of human cases, so most of the evidence is based on a few cases of pregnant women who received daily doses of fluconazole. But in almost all of those cases of women taking 400 mg or more daily for several weeks there were gross malformities in the children at birth, and several of them died shortly after birth. The American Pregnancy Association specifically recommends: "During pregnancy physicians recommend vaginal creams and suppositories only. The oral medication, Diflucan (a single-dose medication), has not been proven safe during pregnancy and lactation." If it were me, there is no way I would take that drug until I had a lengthy discussion with the doctor (not the assistant) about whether any safer alternatively existed, and whether the risks of treatment truly outweighed the risks of the infection itself."

Feb 18th-Feb 25th replied: "Eating yogurt can reduce the risk of yeast infection. EDIT: Yeast infections are very common throughout pregnancy."

has anyone used fluconazole to treat a yeast infection? i jus got fluconazole for a vaginal yeast infection it says it takes 24 hours to start working i was just wondering if anyone has tried it and if it worked for them or if it made things worse.

Y replied: "i think ive been prescribed that as a one day pill, i dont think it worked, because i had to use a seven day treatment of terconazole, to get rid of the yeast infection."

hecla 1 replied: "it is a common treatment for yeast infection and has a very good success rate.....you should also avoid sugar (it feeds the yeast) while you have the infection, also caffeine, and alcohol....you should not have sex until the infection has cleared, probiotics can help establish good bacteria to help with the infection also."

xando2u replied: "It worked for me."

Psychology=Love replied: "Yes I have. Give it the 24 hours to kick in...it worked like a charm for me (many times)."

christyobgyn replied: "Yes...works wonders, you don't have to deal with the messy creams!! It is the generic to Diflucan (the little pink pill)!! You should feel comlete relief in 48 hours. :-)"

Ankita replied: "I don't have any idea about your problem. However, I came across a blog about yeast infection. Hope you find your answer there. Resources for Yeast Infection Causes, Cures, Symptoms, Treatment, Remedies:"

lollypop414 replied: "yes it definitely could be some side-effects of the shot."

how long does it take for fluconazole 150mg tablet to cure a yeast infection? How long does it take for fluconazole orally 150mg tablet to cure a yeast infection? I took the one time only pill, the dosage one week ago - on Wed Jan 16. And I think my yeast infection is gone, but I'm not sure exactly...I never had a yeast infection before (I'm 21 years old) so I don't know. saurus3118 replied: "Fluconazole comes as a tablet and a suspension (liquid) to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day. You may need to take only one dose of fluconazole, or you may need to take fluconazole for several weeks or longer. The length of your treatment depends on your condition and on how well you respond to fluconazole. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take fluconazole exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. This from I have had some success in keeping my body regulated by eating probiotic foods (yogurt or other foods with active culture; Kefir is very high in it...sort of like buttermilk). Good luck and make sure you follow through with your doctor because if only the strong survive, then the strongest yeast are going to be the hardest to kill if you let your antibiotic therapy not finish the job."

For anyone who has used a fluconazole tablet for yeast infection? Did it work well for you? How long did it take? Im finding that my symptoms are going away but the discharge has been a bit thicker and coming out more. is this the medicine working? because i do feel like im getting better.

Proud Mommy of 6 replied: "Yes the medicine will result in some extra discharge at first, and can take up to a week to fully clear the infection."

Angelica P replied: "This is normal for the medication you are taking."

Samurai replied: "see"

fallen_star_1214 replied: "it happens to me too, i think it take a little more time for the discharge to go away but i don't find the pill really effective. Everybody is different so just wait for a few days to see if the discharge is coming back. BTW, if you are close to your period then it could be the discharge from ovulation."
