Experience switching from Wellbutrin XL to generic? I have been taking Wellbutrin XL (the brand name version) for anxiety for several years. However, my insurance changed and now the price difference between the brand and generic (bupropion hcl) is huge. My doctor said he can't guarantee the same results since only the active ingredient is the same and other ingredients can be different. I wanted to know if anyone has made this switch and if they've noticed any differences.

Is Wellbutrin-XL (bupropion hydrochloride) available in generic form? This is a new medication I am on. When I got it filled at the pharmacy (Rite-Aid), they charged me $90 and gave me the trade name, Wellbutrin-XL, in 150 mg. They told me that a generic drug is not made. When I told them I was a nursing student and had literature stating that there was a generic available, they told me that it was only generically available in 300 mg tablets and that I was prescribed 150 mg tablets. I am only supposed to take 150 mg for a few days (to get my body used to it), then I am supposed to start taking two 150 mg tablets, or 300 mg a day. I know that the generic (bupropion hydrochloride) Wellbutrin-XL was approved for use by the FDA in 2006. So, why did I get slapped w/ a fee for a trade name drug and an argument that there is no generic? If I'm wrong, let me know. But, right now I feel as if I will be filling all of my prescriptions elsewhere!

Anyone take Wellbutrin and it made them depressed.? I was taking Wellbutrin for 3 months, i just went off of it and started Serzone, well Nafasodone, the generic) I have a problem with anxiety, attacks and just chronic uncontrolable worrying, even imagining that something negative will happen. Anyway, the Wellbutrin made me so gloomy and depressed. My hubby bought me a big HappyLigth and that didnt help. before that i took lexapro for 2 years but went off of it, because i think it made me gain weight. I took Serzone before but my doc took me off of it because they were going to take it off of the market.but I found out 2 years late, that it didn't happen, yay I am alot more happy and this is only the first day.

Debbie V replied: "I've taken Wellbutrin, but it disturbed my sleep and didn't help my depr. My husband has taken it for years, and it just makes him a kinder, more gentle guy. A happy light made a huge difference for me, because the weather affects me tremendously. I hope Serzone works for you. Personally, it worked, but made me gain weight. But it doesn't do that to everyone, so give it a try. TX Mom"

deshane2530 replied: "Yes I took Wellbutrin and it did nothing for me at all. It made me worse."

manicbhpp replied: "you could always ask for Cloazaril......but you need weekly blood draws to monitor your levels. but it works"

bonnie k replied: "Wellbuterin is not for any of the problems you are listing. It is an antidepressent. I took this for 3 years when I was younger because I was depressed and had MEGA moodswings. Lexapro is an antidepressent also. I dont understand why he would put you on these if you are having ANXIETY problem. You need an anti anxiety pill! I would find a dr that specializes in this and go to them I am not sure about the Serzone I havent done much research of that. Another thing you must watch being a woman. if you are on birthcontrol you MUST becarefull with antidepressants and anti anxity meds it can make a bad combo and you can have bad side effects like one minute you are fine the next you could chop someones fingers off,, the drs never tell you that part you must ask!"

Can someone give me feedback about Budeprion? Which is the generic version of Wellbutrin.? I have just picked up my prescription from CVS and they gave me the generic version Budeprion SR. i havent taken either wellbutrin or budeprion in the past. I was previously on Effexor which i hated. i wanted to make sure that Wellbutrin adn the generic were the same? i have read that wellbutrin is great for depression with very little side effects, my big concern is weight gain as body image is part of my depression and the reason for being treated. purplefaerydust- thanks for your answer. i have never started wellbutrin just straight on to the generic from. so perhaps i will not feel any side affects from the generic. what where your side effects? i just dont want to put on weight!!

Different side effects of Bupropion (generic) vs. Wellbutrin XL? (Thinking of switching to generic but scared)? I have been taking Wellbutrin XL for about a year and 7 months. I was on 150 mg for the first 12 months, then 300 mg for the last 7. (I love it; I feel like I couldn't have imagined a medicine that would make me feel so normal. Just... normal, and consistent, not "high" and no longer experiencing manic lows.) I have always used name brand because I could afford it and because my Dr. recommended it, and am hesitant about generics. The reason I'm hesitant is because I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo (birth control) for a year or so, but the $60 copay was getting costly, so I switched to the generic... I had the worst depression I've had in 2 years, I ate literally 4 times what I eat on a normal basis, and was a psychotic mess. I would get depressed and hopeless for no real reason, every single day, and cried at least twice a day during that time. Without even really knowing why.. I was still on the Wellbutrin during that time but I may as well have been off of it. I thought I was just crazy, but then I went online and read other people's experiences with that specific birth control and learned that many other people had this bad reaction to the generic, and ended up switching back to name brand. Needless to say, I did. Anyway, so my co-pay for the Wellbutrin is $60 a month, and recently my Dr. has put me on other medications too so I want to cut costs and am thinking of switching to the generic (Bupropion)... But after a year & 1/2 of satisfaction with the name brand, added with my terrible experience with the generic of the birth control medicine vs name brand, I'm really scared to switch and wondering what other people's experiences have been? I don't want to read drug facts, because I've done significant research already, I really just want to hear what other people have experienced from the generic, or from the generic compared to name brand. I realize that I need to weigh the options between spending the extra $ and the value of my health, etc etc, I'm not looking for advice, I'm just looking for other people's side effects because that can give me an idea of how bad it may or may not be. Please help... I don't want to go through another experience like I did with my previous generic, so I could use some feedback. Thanks!

ron_8er replied: "This is a question you should discuss with your doctor. I take paxil and when I switched to the generic I started having problems. My doctor told me that some generics do not absorb as well as the brand name. With me we just increased the dosage of the generic and now I am doing very well. Talk to your doctor!"

DrGaellon replied: "The drug itself must be chemically identical to the brand. However, the FDA allows the generic to very from the brand by as much as 20% in terms of effective dose. For most drugs, 20% more or less of the medication in circulation makes very little difference, but some patients may be sensitive to such changes, and for some medications (birth control pills, Coumadin, digoxin and Dilantin in particular), it can be devastating. In general, since the drug itself is chemically identical, the side effect profile is the same - but the incidence (rate of occurrence) of side effects may be different, due to the variable absorption. If you do switch to a generic, make sure you always get the same generic from the same manufacturer - if you go from one that's 20% low to 20% high (because your pharmacy changes suppliers, for instance), you can have severe effects."

versantly replied: "there is a difference to the meds -but often undetectable to most patients. discuss this in detail with your pharmacist & doctor before changing. you may find that your body tolerates the generic form of the med better."

ladyren replied: "Drug companies get a 17 year ride for the high prices. After that, it can be made by other drug companies...But you already know that, right? Is Bupropion the generic of Welbutrin? If it is, then likely it is made by the same company that makes Welbutrin... same dog, different collar. If you are pinging around with your meds, ping with only one at a time... it's called "control". I have a good friend now of bupropion, and it is as if the sun rose in the guy's life. Before this med, he would have days and days of just sitting and doing nothing. That now does not happen. On Prozac, the usual side effect was lack of libido and ED. That as well doesn't happen with bupropion. It costs less than $17/mo I'd suggest, again, that if you are going to switch to bupropion, that that be the only drug switch you make in any single month. If you get a reaction or an effect with which you are uncomfortable, you can easily pin point the cause. Never ever ping two meds at the same time, hon, and as well, not mix any of these with very much alcohol. They just don't work, particularly since you may well be dealing with bi-polar disorder. Please understand that with any mental disorder... bipolar, depression + meds, you are just on the cusp of going back to square one. These meds are absolutely amazing, and have helped soooo many people find a level of contentment they have never ever known. So, again don't change any two drugs at the same time... not even if your doc recommends it."

Bupropion..generic for Wellbutrin? Tomorrow I will begin taking Bupropion..generic for Wellbutrin. I am taking this for depression but its kind of like an added bonus when I heard that it helps you quit smoking. I wanna know how long before I start to notice the cravings starting to go away? I heard I should continue to smoke for one week and start to cut back the 2nd?? I know I have to have a strong drive to quit AND I DO!!! Also, what are the weight gain/loss side effects of this..any appetite changes? Does it decrease your sex drive very much..I am only 21 so I dont wanna lose that just yet! One more thing...has anyone had the side effect of being mean or agitated..thats also another side effect I heard about. So any tips or stories from people on this medicine will make me feel a little better. I just want to know whats gonna happen (I know it works different for everyone but I would like to know how its working for YOU) THANKS EVERYBODY!

MARIA C replied: "i've taken it as well, you'll notice it don't worry. it just happens when you least expect it. it takes a few weeks for the meds to kick in, so hang in there."

If I were to switch from Lexapro to Wellbutrin, would that minimize the sexual side effects? Don't worry, I'm going to ask my doctor this as well but I'd rather hear it from people who have experienced it. Lexapro leaves me literally NO sex drive~ hubby says it's evil :) I also think it's made me gain weight. Or maybe I've gained weight b/c I'm old and lazy :) Have any of you experienced any side effects with Wellbutrin? If so, were any of them sexual? Also, is there a generic form of Wellbutrin? My Lexapro costs $40 a month with my prescprition card b/c there isn't a generic form. Thanks!

When will generic Wellbutrin XL (buproprion or budeprion) 150 mg XL be available? Anchen & Teva R the makers of Buproprion & Budeprion respectively. Anchen makes 300 & 150mg & has given TEVA rights to sell their 150 mg commencing 2008 or earlier. However, according to depression eMedtv.com Budeprion 150 mg is already available?? Confusing as TEVA would not need rights from Anchen to sell buproprion 150mg XL when they already produce Budeprion XL 150mg their own brand! Further, researching various GPO plans, only generic 150mg SR is available not the XL. Anyone have clarification on this and WHEN the generic150 mg XL will be available! FYI-more ppl are saying BUDEPRION is below average in efficacy (despite "supposed" equal amounts of active ingredient as brand) & has more side effects. Take BUPROPRION or Brand instead if your on 300mg or higher using XL form.

Happy replied: "I buy generics all the time. The pharmacy is lcated in UK"

Switched to Wellbutrin XL versus Generic Budeprion XL, thoughts? PLEASE READ: Please, only people who have actually taken these products, and ONLY people who want to help. None of those who just want to say something sarcastic or negative. Ok... I went into a heavy depression after moving from California to Illinois with my husband and daughter. I had been on Prozac for about 5 months after the birth of my daughter for postpartum... and stopped. After living in Illinois, I was at my lowest, and packed on 15 lbs in two months.. which made my depression worse. I started seeing a therapist who recommended Wellbutrin XL. GODSEND. Wellbutrin XL worked GREAT for me. I had energy, was positive and even lost a little weight without the weird loopy side effects I had with prozac. NOW, the issue... I was given the generic Budeprion XL two weeks ago... and am now back to being loopy, lethargic, and can feel the weight creeping back in... NOT TO MENTION the HORRIBLE nightmares I now have. Anyone else have this happen? I, MYSELF, did NOT switch. I originally started on Wellbutrin XL last month and loved it.... but it cost me $140 I guess because my deductible hadnt been met yet. When I went to fill the prescription again, the lady at the pharmacy didnt even tell me she switched... i had only noticed that my fee went down significantly, and it still said Wellbutrin on the outside of the package... NOT on the bottle lol.... I'm going to request the name brand when I fill it again obviously.. even it is going to be pricier... I merely wanted to hear of other people's experience with this same issue.. and what problems they have possible had in this situation. And whomever is leaving negatives to everyone so far, NOT COOL. Everyone's opinion counts! All I can add is WOW. I TRULY appreciate all of everyone's feedback! My own attempts at learning about these drugs alone could not have educated me like all of you. And yes, pretty much all of those side effects you've all listed are what I'm going through.... Funny thing too.... The ACTUAL Wellbutrin XL that I began on killed my cravings for alcohol and certain foods... and now.. being on the generic only about 3 weeks.. I'm wanting to drink more than ever... I'm really depressed again, and I'm having horrible thoughts.. which I NEVER did before. I urgently called my doc and told him the situation and he put in a new refill for my regular wellbutrin right away.. .... I suppose, because of these reasons, generics are SO cheap? hmm... $140 versus $10. Thanks again to you all so much!! Its nice to know I'm not the only one, and that I'm not just creating all of this in my mind. Cheers (^ - ^)

Why does Paxil reduce my depression, but generic paroxetine does not? Effexor and Wellbutrin both make me nauseated. Paxil works well, but for cost reasons I have tried the generic three separate times, once after going cold turkey for 7 months, sinking lower and lower into depression. The generic has never helped. I thought generics were the exact same formula as the proprietary brand. True or false? The only theory I've heard is that there are many fake drugs on the market, especially coming from China. But why not fake the more expensive one? So that reason doesn't fly.

Chez replied: "Branded drugs are more concentrated than generic one.. meaning generic has more preservatives.. but it may also because of the rampant fake medicines we have in the market. The reason why they fake the generic is because it is much safe to fake it than branded one.. Big companies is much alert in looking fraud drug identities that faking thier own... There is much hell to pay.."

charliarhette replied: "I do not think generic medicine is as good. Think about it, name brand meds cost hundreds of dollars and generic meds cost fifteen. I think this is medicine that has to much or to little medicine in it. I do not think generics work as well either."
