Does wellbutrin cause hair loss? If you have taken it did you experience thinning?

CMT replied: "I have been taking wellbutrin for about 4 months now, and have started asking the same question you have asked. I have also noticed more than usual hair loss - instead of a barely perceivable amount, several strands at a time are coming out, and I can run my hand through my hair during the day, and will come away with several strands on my hand. I have come to the conclusion (based on researching the web and speaking to my doctor) that nearly any antidepressant can have this effect. Curiously, it is not noted as a side effect on the manufacturer's site. I have decided to quit taking the wellbutrin and try walking/light workouts instead!"

does anyone have problems with zyprexa and hair loss? i've been on zyprexa for almost 7 years and my hair is really thinning badly. i've tried other anti-psychotics but zyprexa is the only one that seems to help. i also take prozac and wellbutrin. i don't think those 2 cause hair loss. not to mention all the weight i've gained while taking the wonderful zyprexa. about 60 lbs total. anyone having this problem?

Trish replied: "I don't know about the hair loss, but I gained about 70 pounds in a VERY short period of time while taking Zyprexa. I was given it because I was having a lot of trouble sleeping (BIG-TIME overkill), and I was CONSTANTLY starving. There's a lot of stuff out there online about this problem; as soon as I understood what was going on, I went off the stuff, and the weight came off as well. My best advice to you is to talk with your doctor and/or pharmacist. Because of your weight gain, your estrogen levels could be fouled up, and that in turn can affect hair growth. Good luck!"

can bulimia cause hair loss? I have depression and took Wellbutrin back in 2004, my hair started falling out like crazy. I stopped taking it and then started taking it again in 2005. I again had hair loss. I stopped taking it again. I have had bulimia also for 21/2 years, but am now recovering. Haven't had bingeing/purging for about 21/2 months, but my hair is still falling out. Will it stop or am I going to go bald? I am only 32 and I am already depressed, I feel like I'm going crazy!! HELP!! Anyone else with this problem?

mandaonice replied: "ive heard that it can cause hair loss, ruin you teeth and gums and esophogous."

j replied: "My hair did the same thing. I didn't have bulimia, but I was depressed. I took Lexapro, and my hair started falling out too, but the doctor said most likely it was from lack of vitamins. I had not been eating all that well."

isydnor replied: "it does cause hair loss but it's hard to say if you'll go bald or not, you need to eat plenty of protien..."

Glo replied: "Good for you on your recovery, I wish you the best of luck. God bless you. Keep up the good work. Yes is the answer to your question, hair loss and many other things. You should contact a physician and be honest with him/her and they can probably assist you on things that would be beneficial to your health. You may have vitamin deficiencies among other things. You should go and have a health screen and blood work done. Good luck to you on your recovery, you should be so very proud of yourself. God bless"

DAK replied: "Hi RTR Nutrition is the key to a healthy life. Please educate yourself on it and you're world will change dramatically. Bulimia Cause Nutrient deficiencies (especially zinc), food allergies, and amino acid imbalances can all result from or contribute to bulimia, and therefore should be screened for. In addition, although in both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, the underlying causative factors are commonly believed to be solely due to an obsession with body fat, a fear of being (or becoming) fat, or over-concern with perfectionism and are indeed important. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Natural Cures Diet: A whole foods diet with regular eating patterns is very important. Also avoid all products containing sugar and white flour, and be sure to obtain sufficient protein sources to adequately nourish the body. Flower Essences: Various essences can be useful for addressing the underlying emotional and mental states of imbalance and negativity such as fears, perfectionism, manipulative behavior, depression, and anxiety. Crab Apple is particularly useful for coping with obsessive habits relating to body image. Homeopathy: Calc carb., Ipecac., and Graphites are useful remedies for bulimia. Nutritional Supplementation: Liquid ionic multi-mineral complex and multivitamin complex supplements can help overcome the extreme vitamin and mineral deficiencies associated with binge and purge eating and overuse of laxatives. Complex amino acids can also assist in balancing blood sugar levels, which helps reduce food cravings. Alternative Professional Care If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating and relieving the symptoms of bulimia: Biofeedback Training, Hypnotherapy, Light Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Qigong, and Traditional Chinese Medicine Best of health to you Cheers"

teresa p replied: "when you are not eating well it can effect things like hair, nails and skin. Also not eating a proper diet can cause more depression. Years ago I did a paper on diet and mental health and how they go hand in hand . Good Luck I hope you start feeling better soon. Talk to your doctor and see if he can try a different medicine that might work better. Are you getting counseling? It does help, You would be surprised who gets depression you are not alone."

abhellerstein replied: "I am 31, and have been bulimic 11 years. I greatly respect and applaud your recovery, as I am all too aware of how impossible that can feel, so well done! Alas, I have no experience with Wellbutrin, apart from witnessing a friend's initial improvement and subsequent meltdown. I do know that bulimia can cause hair loss. It is a traumatic problem for me as well. I do not know of a connection between hair loss and antidepressants, but I have read in multiple sources that Wellbutrin is contraindicated when treating depression where there is a history of bulimia, perhaps even in recovery, as patients are more likely to experience seizures. Do some research and ask your doctor about this. I wish I could recommend an alternative med. but I have not had much success with Prozac, which was approved by the FDA for the treatment of bulimia and OCD in addition to depression. Here's wishing you a full recovery in every way. ps...have you tried a good multivitamin? You might also explore metabolic abnormalities..re thyroid, adrenal, etc..."

Did Wellbutrin (Generic SR) cause your hair to fall out? I am wondering how many people have experienced hair loss associated with this drug. Could you please let me know how long you have been taking it - and the dosage as well? Thanks for the answers!! I'm also wondering if Biotin will help with this hair loss?

Nina replied: "I have not experience hair loss, I was on it for 6 months. I looked up side effects and found a site with other peoples experience with Wellbutrin. Here is the link to give you a better overview how they felt. If you are experiencing hair loss, go see your doctor to have your medication changed."

M.D. Alison C replied: "hmmm - I was taking it for 8 months (5 years ago) and my hair didnt fall out!!! maybe there is something else....!? as we know hair loss can be caused by many different reasons! There are many causes of loss of hair such as stress, poor nutrition ,medications, thyroid dysfunctions, illness, fungal infections ,hormonal problems, to mention a few. year ago I suffered very much from dandruff and hair loss too and I started trying everything you can imagine to stop my hair loss. the things that really worked for me was: 1) Vitamin A - an anti-oxidant which promotes healthy production of sebum in the scalp; 2) Vitamin E stimulates circulation. Good blood circulation in the scalp is important in keeping hair follicles productive. The 'B' vitamins contribute to melanin, which gives hair its healthy color and also stimulates blood circulation; 3) massage is also beneficial. Massage stimulates circulation. As already noted, good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active. Experts suggest a few minutes of daily head massage by hand. Circulation through massage may be improved by using a few drops of lavender or bay essential oil in an almond or sesame oil base with massage; 4) Try rubbing your scalp with garlic juice, Onion Juice or Ginger Juice(you can either of one out of three, Do not mix any of two or three); 5) also he used herbal treatment - TrichoZed or/and Provillus (do not use Rogaine - it will not work!) Those are a good products that helps prevent hair loss and contains Biotin and the clinically tested ingredients approved by the FDA to help re-grow your hair.! I think it is very important! It worked and still works for me! I do not know if any pharmacies carry TrichoZed but I do know that you should purchase it directly from the manufacturer and read more about the product here (TrichoZed will produce noticeable hair growth in 30 to 45 days. A consistent use of TrichoZed ensures permanent results within 6 months. Further use shall maintain optimal health of your hair.) and here (Provillus will produce noticeable hair growth in 40. A consistent use of TrichoZed ensures permanent results within ~5 months.) It enhances hair growth by blocking DHT (Dihydrotestostrone) - a major cause of hair loss! Also Informative video about Provillus - good luck! not only my own personal experience + working as a family physician"

Hair loss/thinning antidepressant side effect? Apparently, I've learned this is a common side effect and was not disclosed to me by prescribing physician. Burpropion (wellbutrin) causes anorexia as a side effect and a horrible discontinuation syndrome when abruptly stopped as I did. It lasted about a month and that's really when I noticed hair thinning and loss. I want to know if others have this side effect. I checked the drugs on medication.com and atleast 50 people reported this effect. I thought it was dietary/anorexia/decreased food intake side effect and not just another side effect not caused by diet. Has anyone else experienced it from any antidepressants? I finally figured it out that it was the medication and not the decreased food/water intake. I will never take these meds again. I stopped because of severe muscle rigidity and jaw clenching that kept getting worse each day. Thanks for the input..

futaberry replied: "yea...wellbutrin was awful for me. I did not experience the hair loss/thinning, but my mother did. I just avoid maoi's completely"

Emily replied: "I've never experienced hair loss with any anti-depressants I've taken, mainly side effects such as aggression or thirst... I have something that might help you though."

Mladen M replied: "I actually did do some online research and I discovered that for a lot of women, hair loss is most definitely a side effect of the Wellbutrin, Some women's side effects are itchy scalp and hair-loss. I contacted my doctor and she said that yes...hair loss could very well be a side effect."

will going off of wellbutrin 300mg bring back my sex drive? i've had none for a year.? i've been on wellbutrin 300mg for almost 10 years now. the last couple of years have been the hardest. i have no sex drive. i am also switching from 80mg prozac to zoloft for anxiety. i've read that prozac causes hair loss. i have a big problem with this also.

nyskiermom replied: "It is more likely that the Prozac is responsible for your lack of sex drive. Do the switch over to zoloft and see how you feel before you drop the Wellbutrin."

Jen A replied: "Why is your sex drive low in the first place? That is what you should determine...The coming off the meds could be it. That could be it along with no time and stress. I was in your situation before and it's not too pleasant nor fun. I tried everything to regain it but after months of exercising and dieting nothing came back at all. I then tried a natural herbal enhancer thinking these herbs can re-boost my sex drive. I took them and let me tell you the truth. These things work so great and are my new best friends. OMG they really take the libido up and make you so horny when you need to be. Along with that the orgasms are 20x's better and come in multiple now. The stuff is called Hersolution and you can read up about it at herenhancement.com where I saved $30 on it at the time. You will love this stuff. Well good luck and I hope this helps."
