What is the difference between Metformin and Metformin HCL? My mother is taking Metformin and the doctor prescribed her with Metformin HCL and we were wondering the difference. We asked but can't remember...I think it is a waterpill added.

Pinky26 replied: "There is no difference between metformin and metformin hydrochloride. This product, trade named Glucophage and Glucophage XL, can be referred to by either name. The only thing can be the duration of the effect, one acts slower than the other."

Metformin for Insulin Resistance in achieving weight loss: How long does it take to work? I have been diagnosed with insulin resistance and have been prescribed 2500 mg metformin daily. Many ppl with PCOS, metabolic syndrome, or insulin resistance lose weight bc their insulin isnt working properly without the aid of metformin or the like. I have been on it for over a week and have not lost any weight. I was wondering if anyone has experienced weight loss after a couple weeks, rather than immediately.

drdebilitas replied: "Hello , one week is a very very short period for metformin to work , it needs two weeks to reach the maximum effect , and more than 1 month to cause any weight loss , The action of metformin is greater when the patient starts a healthy diet simultanously , don't forget that , 2500 mg is a high dose to start with , and 1000 mg (in two doses ) would be better . Dr.Debilitas"

www.hotloss.com replied: "Wow. I was prescribed that several years ago when I was about 16 years old. It seems that I was at 1000mg. I actually didn't experience much weight loss directly from taking it. Of course, I was already exercising 3-4 hours per day and watching my diet (now that I know better, I was actually eating too little considering my exercise). Interestingly, I am actually far heavier now than I ever was back then since I was really sick with autoimmune problems for almost two years. However, I don't have problems with my blood sugar anymore. I think I must have simply outgrown it. Anyhow, although some people definitely experience weight loss with this and other prescription drugs, I think it is important that you consider lifestyle choices that may affect your health. Depending on your situation, you may have developed insulin resistance due to being overweight, having poor nutrition, or being inactive. If these sorts of things resulted in your illness, you need to consider changing them. After all, the number on the scale isn't directly related to good health. You need to consider exercise (strength, cardio, and flexibility) and nutrition (including carb/protein/fat, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals). It's a lot to think about, I know, but that is what will let you live a healthy life. I am learning more about it every day, and am trying to get myself healthy again after having a long period of illness. In fact, I've started a blog to keep me accountable at . Feel free to stop by!"

How soon after metformin did you start clomid? After you started metformin did you start taking clomid? Can I started both in the same week? Would it help?

Is taking Metformin worth going through all the side effects for your diabetes? I was wondering if you are taking Metformin if you think its worth taking going through all the side effects it has. I'm taking it once a day before dinner @ 500mg. Now I'm getting headaches, my stomachs upset all the time and I have diarrhea. Are you having any of these symptoms and do you think Metformin is worth taking?

Prophet 1102 replied: "I did initially until my system adapted. Now I have none of those symptoms. I usually only take one or two a day. The alternative is to use Byetta - but you still have to take at least one metformin a day."

formerly_bob replied: "It kind of depends on how well it controls your diabetes, and if you think the benefits outweigh the side effects. Many people can achieve the same results taking 1000mg cinnamon pills at dinner and breakfast. You can monitor your glucose levels and compare them while taking metformin, without taking it, and with taking cinnnamon as an alternative. If Metformin is not effective or not significantly more effective than cinnamon, then there's no point in putting up with the side effects."

tinkerteri replied: "Well don't get me wrong, the side effects are aweful. But do I think it's worth it? Yes. If all you have to take at the moment to control your diabetes is Metformin and not insulin then yes it's worth it. Unfortunetely, all those things you mentioned are side effects of taking Metformin but taking a needle multiple times a day is so much worse. And on the positive side once your body gets used to taking it, the symtoms should go away. Someone mentioned Byetta. I had a really serious reaction to Byetta (Which is a needle also) I was getting sick everytime I took it. My doctors took me off of it right away as I was developing symtoms of pancratitus. Stick with it sweetie, it will get better. I thought I was dying when I first started taking it. Now I don't have any symtoms os side effects. Hope you feel better soon. TinkerTeri p.s- I wouldn't stop taking Metformin and trying Cinnamon pills without consulting your doctor. While it is proven that Cinnamon has lowering effects for your sugar I wouldn't stop taking Metformin. Consult your doctor and ask if you should/could take them. I actually do take Cinnamon pills (you can buy them at Wal-Mart) but my doctor told me it would not lower my sugar significantly enough to not also take Metformin."

Cat replied: "I take 1000 mg twice a day and I would have answered no to your question until I started taking Januvia. The Januvia and metformin made an incredible difference for me but then again my side effects are mild. There are many medications out there, it's best to discuss your concerns with your doctor."

Crazy Old Woman replied: "Take your metformin and put up with the side effects for awhile. The metformin side effects are sooooo much better than going blind, getting heart disease, or having one or both feet amputated. This is what happens if you don't control your diabetes. This is not to scare you (well maybe a little) it is to make you WAKE UP before you do permanent damage to your body. The side effects will lessen with time, and with diet and exercise there may come a time when you no longer need the metformin in your life, but you will still have a life, and your sight, and your feet. :-) As for the headaches, these are probably happening because the diarrhea is dehydrating you. Supplement with an electrolyte replacement like Gatorade or Pedialyte. I wish you the best of luck. Diabetes doesn't have to ruin your life, not if you don't let it!"

sue replied: "a lot of people have learned to take the Met just before eating. I took it about half way through the meal at first. I also ate about 5 bottles of tumms to control the upsets I had then. Some people use Pepto for the same reasons. regular Met can be cut in half and sneaked in to the diet so it doesn't cause quite so many digestive upsets. Doctor just recommended I increase my Met and I am back to wanting the Pepto or Imodium and the tumms and anti gas pills. Thinking of backing off on so much of it tho. The increase at night is fine, but I sure didn't need the increase in morning too. Sorry, Headache isn't part of this equation. Met does not cause headache."

Can the diabetic drug Metformin suddenly start causing diarrhea after being on it for a year? I have been on Metformin for a year and for the past few weeks I've been having a lot of problems with having to run to the bathroom. I'm trying to figure out why I'm having this embarrassing problem!

how fast does metformin work with pcos in restoring your menstrual cycle? I am ttc and have pcos. I was going to talk to my doc about going on metformin and just wanted to do some research first. How long did it take to restore your cycle if metformin worked for you?

When should I start taking Metformin three times a day? My doctor put me on Metformin 500mg last Friday. I am taking it twice a day for a total of 1000mg a day. Well, I called and spoke to my doctor's nurse today. She said I could switch to taking it three times a day if I felt comfortable. I have not had any major side effects since taking the medication, besides a few days of upset stomach. So my question is, from your own experience, how long should I wait before switching to three times a day?

chevyracyn83 replied: "You'll have really bad squirts if you take 3 a day."

drruth replied: "WHen you say take it three times a day, do you mean upping your dosage to 1500mg? If so, start it right away and if it makes you sick, go back to 1000mg a day for another week or two then up it again. My doctor suggested me to do it like this: 500mg 1 x daily for 2 weeks 500mg 2 x daily for 2 weeks 1000mg 1 x daily for 2 weeks 1000mg 2 x daily for 2 weeks"

How long does it take for Metformin side effects to start? I began taking Metformin today for PCOS and was wondering how long it takes for the GI effects to begin. Also, can Pepto help and how long does it take to subside?

Toria replied: "I have been taking Metformin for a month now and I find that most of my GI effects happen at night. If I take it around dinner time then I end up waking up at night having to vomit. If I take it in the morning I end up nauseas all day. The best thing I have found to do is take it right before bed time.. you sleep through all of the side effects that way. I don't take pepto because it tends to make trigger vomiting w/ me, but it would probably work. Metformin tends to cause stomach cramps w/ me more than nausea so I take zantac. Good luck w/ your PCOS. I've lost 13 lbs this month!!"

Can metformin cause me to have a miscarriage or affect me getting pregnant? My doctor recommended me to use Metformin to try and regulate my periods which would make me ovulate more regularly and hopefully help me get pregnant. But now I'm wondering if it could be doing the total opposite. I'm getting my periods every month, but I haven't been able to get pregnant. I've been on it for about 6 months.
