jen replied: "that is the same as zofran, its the generic and A LOT cheaper even with insurance-- i have been using the zofran since i was 9 weeks pregnant due to hyperemesis (i couldn't keep anything down and was loosing weight)- i was prescribed that by an emergency room dr, and when i went to follow up with my ob he said it was perfectly fine. i still continue to take it at 28wks as needed. i also take phenerigan with it if needed (if the all day sickness is bad i alternate taking them every 3rd hour)."

What is the effect of drinking alcohol while taking ondansetron? I've been trying to research it. A friend of mine is on ondansetron for nausea and we want to celebrate the end of finals (phew!) and I am wondering exactly how these two would interact. I looked it up but I don't quite understand. Would it increase or decrease the effects of alcohol?
Also, she is not an alcoholic which is what a lot of the studies pertain to. Help?
Crafty replied: "Apparently, cravings are minimized"
Chris replied: "Well, the effects can't be that bad:
In an effort to learn about how odansetron might modify drinking behavior, this study gave half of their subjects odansetron, and half got nothing (placebo). Then they got every single one of them drunk! (Of course, they don't say "we got them smashed," instead they say they gave a "standard intoxicating dose."
If there was an interaction between odansetron and alcohol, I'm sure this study would never have been done."
Anyone know anything about Ondansetron tablets whilst pregnant? I was constantly sick from 7 weeks pregnant and was always being taken into hospital. I have been taking Ondansetron (Zofran) to stop the sickness. I am afraid that taking it for so long will harm the baby. I am now 18 weeks and I tried to come off it but started throwing up again. Is it safe to take for so long? My GP says she "thinks" so.
I am in the UK so am given these tablets free of charge.
Shelly replied: "If your doctor is telling you she "thinks" so, please do yourself a favor and go to a new doctor who knows what they are talking about. That is a huge risk to take if there is a possibility it will hurt your baby."
Dawnie midwife uk replied: "wow, i'm impressed with your GP.
Ondansetron is sooooooooo expensive and very effective.
We use it when all other drugs have failed, and we give it intravenously.
Your GP would not give you anything harmful to your baby, however it is advised that you avoid long term use. Therefore you need to come off it.
There are others that you could request, particularly Stemetil, Metoclopromide and valoid. All these are regarded to be safe in pregnancy as there have never been any reports of birth defects associated with their use in pregnancy.
have you tried drug-free remedies? The accupressure bands for your wrists are effective, nibbling ginger biscuits and you can even get ginger chewing gum."

What is an exact dosage of ondansetron in nosia and voming in paeditric patients? Is ondansetron well tolerated? FROM WHICH AGE IT CAN BE ADMINISTERED? Is it safe in chilren between one to two years age?
Pangolin replied: "The official prescribing information reports a dosage range of 0.04-0.8 mg/kg in patients age 4-18, and no data for patients under the age of 4.
In anesthesia, we use a dosage of 0.1 mg/kg up to a maximum dose of 4 mg, which is the adult dose.
I don't usually give it to babies that young, though. If a child of that age had intractable vomiting after anesthesia, I'd consider using ondansetron at the 0.1 mg.kg dose. I have no experience with chemotherapy prophylaxis and treatment, though I know they tend to use higher doses than we do."
I think my 3 yr old son might have a bad stomach virus, should i give him ondansetron? He has just started with the diahrea part of this really bad stomach thing that is going around his school. Should I give him an Ondansetron ODT before he acutally vomits?
Is it bad that I swallowed my ONDANSETRON ODT pill rather than let it disolve under my tounge? I have been swallowing the pill, and just realized I was supposed to let it dissolve.
ckm1956 replied: "Nope. It all ends up in the same place."
Ondansetron for morning sickness, anyone else had it prescribed? My Ob/Gyn put me on Ondansetron for severe morning sickness, has any one you been put on this? If so, I'd like a little reassurance that it's safe, I know it's kind of crazy, but it worries me.
experiment for the Antiemetic Drug Ondansetron on 5-HT3 Receptor Binding? The Kd for binding of [3H]GR65630 is in the nM range. Why a concentration of [3H]GR65630 close to the Kd used for this experiment?
