why do caffeine, aspirin and ibuprofen make my stomach hurt? They used to didn't bother me but now they cause excruciating pain in my stomach.

Sammy21 replied: "all are gastric irritants. it irritates your stomach lining and so you get the pain. =-)"

kmes461 replied: "aspirin can corrode your stomach if it isn't coated. the caffeine will wind up hurting more if you are drinking it after taking aspirin because your stomach is raw and there is a lot of acid in soda. as far as ibuprofen you may need to take it with food."

420 replied: "pft, aspirin aint gonna corrode your stomach! your stomach just isn't use to it anymore if you start taking those drugs again after a few days the pain will go away. try taking the pills/coffee along with a meal or make sure you don't take them on an empty stomach"

Why is it necessary to use both ultraviolet radiation and an iodine developing chamber when examining TLC? The TLC was used to examine or compare an unknown compound to acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine, ibuprofen, and salicylamide.

simonizer1218 replied: "Certain substances will show up or be visible when exposed to iodine vapors, but others may not be. Same is true with uv light."

Any ideas of how to get rid of a headache? I've had my headache for 14 days now. I've tried Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, caffeine, cold compresses, etc. I spoke with my doctor and he said to get a massage, but that didn't work either. Any other over-the-counter ideas?

Devil's Nephew replied: "Nurofen?"

Beez replied: "A good chiropractor will help immensely. They have saved me from serious surgery after breaking my neck as a teenager. Also helpful is putting your hands in ice cold water, then lying down in a dim room for awhile."

Chris L replied: "My aunt taught me this (she gets migranes). Take a few grains of cayenne pepper and sniff it. It will sting your sinuses a little, but it helps with the headache. I've done this many times and it works."

punkgirltx replied: "I have had migraines since I was younger... The triggers that start them are: not enough sleep not eating right/ skipping meals Drinking alcohol drinking/ eating anything with caffeine raw onions for some strange reason..lol I would try to see if you can determine the trigger/ food/ stressful situation that causes them...start narrowing things out. usually if I get a migraine and I have already avoided the triggers, I take aleve and sleep. I have heard that acupuncture works well, but I have never tried it... hope this helps a little :)"

deble_2000 replied: "Sounds like you could have a rebound headache from all the stuff you have taken. Have a heating pad? Try laying down with it on the back of your neck. I always takwn Excedrin Migraine, it really does help. Hope you feel better."

Headaches can be caused by minor problems like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information available at"

What is the order of polarity? I am wondering of the compound of caffeine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin. what is the order of polarity from highest to lowest. Is it aspirin, acetaminophen, caffeine, then ibuprofen? because more NH, More OH, and more CO, the more polar? however, my experiment result shows that caffeine is the most polar of all, and the least polar is ibrophen can someone explain based on the structures. thanks!

Dr Bo0nz replied: "I think the hyrdroxyl (-OH) and the -NH in acetaminophen makes it the most polar. Then comes caffeine, and then its ibuprofen and finally aspirin. I am not sure but it seems logical: OH and the NH in acetaminophen makes it very polar; in caffeine you have three nitrogen-carbon interactions; in ibuprofen you have the OH; and finally in aspirin you the OH and the two carbonyl that makes it weak."

TLC plate analysis, basic question about reference compounds.? If you do a TLC plate analysis on one plate with: caffeine, ibuprofen, aspirin, and a standard reference compund (combo of the caffeine, ibuprofen, and aspirin), would you see components other than the reference comounds? If so, why.

chemgoldenbear replied: "Assuming each of the compounds/solutions are pure, no other components will be seen. Caffeine, ibuprofen, and aspirin will not react or do anything that would cause the appearance of other spots."

how do you prepare a 1% solution? for my lab class we have to prepare a solution of an unknown substance (its either acetaminophen, caffeine, ibuprofen, or aspirin) and ethanol. I need to know how much ethanol and how much of the substance i need to put together to make a 1% solution. If you can write it out using stoichiometry would be great

V. replied: "Hi, there. You can make solutions in three different ways: mass of solute / mass of solution (m/m); mass of solute / volume of solution (m/v); or volume of solute / volume of solution. That being said, caffeine, ibuprofen, aspirin, etc. are things you'd measure out with mass, usually, and ethanol with volume. So, a 1% solution in this case would be 1 gram of caffeine/ibuprofen/whatever you're using / 100 mL ethanol, for 1 gram is roughly 1 mL, although you'd have to look at density to be more accurate. Good luck!"

If I'm trying to conceive, should I be taking cold and flu remedies? I've been off the Pill since November and my husband and I would love to have a baby. At the moment, I am on my period and am really suffering with flu. I'm getting conflicting advice everywhere I turn! Should I avoid cold and flu remedies or just those containing caffeine? Should I also be avoiding painkillers like paracetamol, ibuprofen and aspirin or are they pretty harmless until you know you're pregnant? I'm so confused!

The Watcher replied: "It doesnt really matter because you not pregnant yet.....so feel free to take them and enjoy trying ;)"

laura-loo replied: "yeah you would be fine taking them as your not preg yet. SENDING LOTS OF BABY DUST TO YOU :)"

mangopuppy replied: "No, you are fine to take cold and flu remedies right now during your period -- you are not pregnant and even if you got pregnant, say two weeks from now, the drugs would be out of your system by then."

ibuprofen, paracetemol and anadin? i have been taking ibuprofen and paracetemol alternately every 2 hours, after having a tooth removed, i took an ibuprofen 2 hours ago and am in pain but have run out of partacetemol, can i take an anadin extra which has paracetemol, aspirin and caffeine or Panadol which contain paracetemol and potassium sorbate

sh1tshockhorror replied: "yeah that should be fine, just dont take too many. try and get some paramol if you can - its the best for toothache"

old know all replied: "You can take Panadol, but not Anadin Extra. Ibuprofen and Aspirin are similar and you can OD if you mix them."

Ip M replied: "its not exactly an overdose, is it????? bloody hell, take as many as you wish, wash it down with some jolly sailor rum (my favorite) and then have a headache tomorrow instead."

bobert1607 replied: "yes as long as it was more then 4hrs ago you took paracetomol it will be fine"

HelenH replied: "you can take ibuprofen and paracetomal together as they contain diffrerent anelgaesics yes you can take annadin as long as you leave a 4 hour gapEDIT -it is the paracetomal you are watching out for as will do the liver or kidney damage you can take paracetomol, ibuprofen and aspirin together as they are different just be careful"

Kanishk replied: "ye mixing these drugs is not a problem. just be careful of taking the paracetamol only every 8 hrs and the ibuprofen every 4-6 hrs. you can OD on paracetamol and believe it or not it is one of the most toxic drugs around in OD. I would advise against taking ibuprofen and aspirin together though, because they both work in a similar way, which is to reduce prostaglandins, which cause pain amongst other things. there are some good prostaglandins though which line your gut and stop the acid eroding it and if you knock these out with aspirin or iburprofen youll end up with a peptic ulcer and they can be quite painful. if your young mixing the two shouldnt be too much bother as long as you dont take them together for too long"

Dr Frank replied: "You can take Anadin Extra with ibuprofen if you are stuck for the time being. However it is a good idea to replace it with paracetamol alone as soon as practical. This is not because there is any interaction, but because in my view codeine containing pain killers are best avoided anyway. There risk/benefit ration is much poorer that paracetamol, and they are only marginally more potent."
