ibuprofen overdose? I have a competition where i will be running 6+ miles and am wondering how much ibuprofen is an overdose. I wheigh 130 and am 5 foot 5. I need it for the bum ankle i have developed. aka i sprained it.

I've definitely pushed the sports before with injuries and pushed the over the counter pain killers and I have been told by my orthopedic that I was allowed to take up to 800mg but should not go over the 800mg."

After reading a Advil's label, which indicates that 6 pills are maximum, what would happen if a person was to over dose with around 3000 mg of ibuprofen at a body weight of 150 lbs?

John de Witt replied: "Most people get a bellyache. A few will get gastric erosions and possibly bleeding. Others, especially if their renal blood flow is compromised, will have decreased renal function, and people with borderline heart failure may decompensate."

Ron replied: "the maximum recommended dose of ibuprofen is 2400 mg per day. Taking 3000 mg will cause stomach upset and can cause stomach bleeding, but shouldn't cause long term lasting damage to organs, unless consumed on a continuous basis."

Amy replied: "the max dose is 3200mg/day. although you took less than that, it seems that you took it all at once, making it a little more possible for harm to have been done. you should be ok, but the stomach pain would be normal, but i would advise going to the ER to get checked out just to be safe and make sure there's no bleeding anywhere."

how soon do you start getting stomach cramps from overdose of ibuprofen?? I kinda overdosed on ibuprofen... and lately i have been having stomach cramps.

April replied: "What does"I kinda overdosed" even mean? The max. amt of Ibuprofen that is recommended in any 24 hr period is 2400 mgs. Whether you take it in otc doses of 200 mg, or as a script med, at 600 or 800. Beyond that, the medication is worthless. As well, never take it on an empty stomach. Further, some people are more sensitive to it than others, and get severe gastritis with even the slightest amount. Never give it to dogs or cats, aspirin either. And the stomach does not "cramp", it 'burns' because acid production is up, and the mucus lining has been compromised. Constant ingestion of Ibuprofen has some interesting side effects..... cardiac problems, as with Vioxx, but obviously not nearly the number nor the severity. The Cox 2 enzyme is important for cardiac function, and to inhibit it has lead to studies now that include Advil, and the other Ibuprofen compounds. Keep that in mind. No med is without side effects, some worse than others. As a little reminder, never take more of a medication than recommended by your physician."

If you went to the hospital and they told you than you are right, it's ok. but I advaice you don't make the same thing again, because you would be to take 1 pill of Ibuprofen in 3 hours. ok just last night i went to the hostpitle for ibuprofen overdose is it ok to take a loritab? i got the loritabs cause i have a abcessed tooth which it will be getting pulled soon :/ but the doctor perscribed me with the loritabs and i was wondering if it would be ok to take one? no the overdose was not on purpose :/

Janeway replied: "Yes, you can take *one*. If you weren't well enough to, you'd still be in the hospital. Loritab doesn't contain Ibuprofen, so it won't interact with your hopefully accidental od. Just don't add any Ibuprofen to it any time soon."
