Has anyone taken Wellbutrin for depression during pregnancy? I have been on Wellburtin for mild depression for many years. I am now 9 weeks pregnant and am continuing to take Wellbutrin. It is a catagory C which means there are no known risks for birth defects but it has not been cleared either. It is the first medication that What To Expect lists as a good med to take for depression during pregnancy. I do have a friend who took it her whole pregnancy and had a happy healthy baby girl. I am wondering if there are others out there who have had healthy babies while taking Wellbutrin. Than ks in advance.

Nikki K replied: "ive actually never taken it but i wouldnt take anything being pregnant. im 16 weeks now and i dont even like to take tylenol even though its safe."

I take Wellbutrin for depression, but still feel very lethargic & apathetic. What can I do? I've had a depression for years & now take Wellbutrin. It helps a little bit, but I still feel very lethargic & apathetic (which I felt even before I started taking Wellbutrin). What can I do? How do you get out of a profound lethargy & apathy? I'd like to know what others have done to get past this. How have you dealt with these feelings, and lack of energy, and feeling? What worked for you? Thank you for your help.

Amanda replied: "It might not be the right medication for you. It is extremely hard to find the correct medication. If you are not feeling better after taking the medication for a month you need to speak with your doctor and see about getting a stronger dosage of wellbutrin or switching to a different one."

Paul A replied: "You didn't say what dose of Wellbutrin you're taking, you might need a stronger dose of it - or even a different medication. If you've taken the Wellbutrin over six weeks or so, you might contact your doctor. It does take a while for antidepressants to reach their "full effective" level."

If you have an anxiety disorder, and have taken wellbutrin for depression, has it increased your anxiety? Assuming you have depression AND an anxiety disorder, and have taken wellbutrin to help with the depression, possibly in combination with an anti-anxiety drug, has the wellbutrin increased your anxiety, or not affected anxiety at all?

socratesmanx replied: "I'M BIPOLAR,HAVE DEPRESSION,AND ANXIETY. I USED TO TAKE WELLBUTRIN FOR THE DEPRESSION, IT DID WONDERS FOR A WHILE AND I LOVED THE WEIGHT LOSS. IT DID AFTER A BIT START TO MAKE ME MORE ANGRY, AND MY ANXIETY DID GET WORSE ND MY DEPRESSION MEDS HAD TO BE CHANGED TO CYMBALTA, WHICH IS SUPER GREAT!!! I DO WISH YOU GREAT LUCK SWEETS!!"

Godshot replied: "Dave Turo-Shields here, veteran therapist. Wellbutrin works strictly with norepinephrin, not serotonin. It's considered an "activating" antidepressant. Norepinephrin is an "energy" hormone. If you already have enough of it in your system and add Wellbutrin, it can lead to symptoms a person might consider anxiety symptoms. Did you know you can now get help online or by phone? "

Is Wellbutrin helpful with depression? Can you just stop taking it if it doesnt work? I was just prescribed it for 150mg. I took Zoloft first but it made me gain weight so I switched to Wellbutrin. If you've taken it did it help? I'm 17 and have had depression and anxiety for like 2 years but just now started getting treated for it. I could really use info about this drug. Please tell me your experiences.

suki replied: "In my experience it works really well but that is not to say it will work for you the same way. It is not something that you should just stop taking if it is not working with your body correctly. It does not tend to cause the weight gain of most of the other meds they give for depression but again it all has to do with your body and how it reacts to you. Good luck and I hope that it works for you."

user1notfound replied: "i did take generic wellbutrin. first - i think it is important to remember these are chemicals that will react differently in everyone. so my story. i have "anxiety" for a lack of a better word. my body at first rejected it strongly - just as my body rejected all SNRI / SSRI class of drugs. but this one was a little easier to take. i can only say i had 2 "good" days on it. 1 day i felt a little "woozy / stoned / out of it / feeling good" and the other day i had some good / positive sexual side effects. these days didn't happen back to back either. the daily feeling i had on it was like a cup of coffee. did it help with my depression? a little. did it help with my anxiety? no. those happened only 1 day each- and came and went. so really it wasn't giving me any relief that i was looking for. sometimes i actually felt worse taking them. i did have 2 "bad" days on wellbutrin. i had this sensation like my neck was stiff / going to break / i couldn't relax my neck. it was a stiffness even deeper than my neck muscles. its very hard to explain. i felt like i could not control my neck for hours. it was very scary and caused me great panic. the main sensation i have had when taking paxil / celexa / is this "buzzing" sort of sensation all through out my entire body with a type of drowsiness that is almost painful. my body rejects these drugs and i don't thing they are right for me. i answered the question only because i have had experience with wellbutrin - but may not be the best qualified because i don't take it anymore and i physically cant take any major anti depressant because it cause me severe physical reactions."

eloiselt replied: "I'd be careful. You really shouldn't just stop antidepressants. Usually, a gradual 'weaning' is recommended, where you lower the dose gradually over the course of a few weeks. Just stopping the drug can leave you with some nasty withdrawal symptoms, like worsened depression, agitation, anxiety, irritability, and sleeplessness. And the withdrawal symptoms can take up to a few weeks to appear, as there is still the drug left over in your body after you stop taking it. Good luck!"

Paul A replied: "I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over two years, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can't tell I'm taking any medication at all. I've heard of a lot of people who take Wellbutrin with their SSRI's (which is what Zoloft and Lexapro are). It helps counteract some of the bad side effects of the SSRI - such as weight gain, lack of energy, and the sexual side effects. So, you can, if you need to, take both Zoloft and Wellbutrin. 150 mg of Wellbutrin is not a lot, and you might need a low dose of Zoloft to go along with it. Best of luck to you :-)"

Methoozelah replied: "Aw? It kinda upsets me that you aren't happy... : ( Hope you get better soon... : )"

What should I expect when changing medication for depression? Wellbutrin to Cymbalta? I've been on 300mg of Wellbutrin for the past 2 weeks and it hasn't helped worth crap, so my meds are being changed. I'm going back down to 150mg Wellbutrin and adding 60mg Cymbalta, i'm taking it in the morning. What side effects or withdrawal symptoms might come up? Any info will help

EZT replied: "all those anti-depressants don't work do some research, they will do more harm"

Honestly, now replied: "I don't think you were on the Wellbutrin long enough for it to have much effect, but when I went off it after a year and a half I hit a deep depression that lasted a couple months. I know nothing about Cymbalta, though. Beer works better than any of those expensive drugs."

I have been taking Wellbutrin XL 300 for depression and anxiety but it doesn't help my anxiety. Is it common? I have been taking Wellbutrin XL 300 for the past 9months for depression, but I also suffer from anxiety. My doctor says that the Wellbutrin XL 300 should work for my anxiety but I do not believe it is working. She doesn't want to prescripe me an anti-anxiety drug because she thinks the Wellbutrin should take care of the anxiety. Does anyone else still suffer from anxiety while taking Wellbutrin XL 300 and if so what should i do?

virginia_maryland replied: "Wellbutrin is not the best SSRI, for anything. Paxil is great for anxiety but it's really hard to go off of."

Matt replied: "I haven't tried Wellbutrin but if it isn't helping your anxiety then your doctor should be trying alternatives! One drug doesn't fit all! I have had good results with Xanax and Zoloft but everyone is different."

the_blue_martini_69 replied: "yes i was on it also and it stopped workin that happens alot with most drugs try another drug theres tons of anxiety meds jus ask ur doctor depends on what ur doctor wants u on"

MyMarriageRocks replied: "I'm also on Wellbutrin 300 mgs and no it has not helped at all with my anxiety or depression. My doctor put me on prozac and if it seems to work they are going to wean me off of Wellbutrin. I think Wellbutrin is a lame drug that doesn't work."

truthsearcher replied: "See if the Dr. will consider adding the smallest dose of Lexapro, ( 10 mg), along with the Welbutrin, or alone. It's fantastic. I have a lot of anxiety and was panicking and the dr put me on it, and it's truly amazing and had government approval for the treatment of anxiety. Go to lexapro.com"

prozaksperspective replied: "Wellbutrin has an OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) reduction component. I would have to guess your anxiety is repetitive thoughts. I'm not knowledgeable on anti-anxiety meds. I do take Seroquel at night. It has the lovely distinction of being called an anti-psychotic. It's prescribed for anxiety along with a host of other diagnoses. Risperdal cut my anxiety when I took it on a backpack trip through Europe. I still take them as needed. If you tell your doctor that you posited a question on the internet, they will sit-up very strait and very fast :) Then they will listen like their job depends on it, because it will. They can't have their patients falling over dead because the patient didn't get answers from the doc and went to the web instead. :)"

Paul A replied: "I take Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over a year and a half, and it's working very well for me. I'm surprised they would prescribe just Wellbutrin for anxiety - that is why I'm taking the Lexapro. From what I've been told, Wellbutrin doesn't really do much for anxiety. I tried Wellbutrin XL 300 - and it made me nauseous all the time. Best of Luck to you :-) Paul."

if i take wellbutrin without depression? i dont have depression so if i take wellbutrin will i just feel euphoric? and if thats so how many would i need to take of 150mg pills what will it do then?

Pick A Winner replied: "No, you are not going to feel euphoric. People take this drug all the time without depression, but they take it for smoking cessation. If you want to feel euphoric, take some opiates like oxycontin or dilaudid."

Has anyone had success with combing Prozac with Wellbutrin for treatment of depression? I'm wondering if combining the two would help with the fatique and lethargy that accompanies major depression. The Prozac (fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), while Wellbutrin (bupropion) acts on dopamine and norepinephrine. I was hoping for some feedback from anyone who has taken this combination, as I intend to discuss this option wit my MD. What do you all think? Any comments, experiences, and opinions would be very much appreciated.

ghost replied: "They are not meant to be combined. And all anti-depressants are unhealthy."

man or woman? replied: "No, Prozac made me got crazy, a state that included my depression, but was worse than depression because I had energy, so much that I was accused of taking amphetamines."

hazeleyedbeauty1967 replied: "Are you trying to kill yourself? I hope not. DO NOT MIX ANY ANTIDEPRESSANTS. Talk to your doctor. Prozac is pretty powerful on its own. Wellbutrin is mild but does the job by itself as well. Do not have a doctor put you on Paxil, it will give you suicidal tendencies."

JB81 replied: "Anti-depressants are not meant to be combined. One thing that might help is combining an anti-depressant with an anti-anxiety medication, depending on your symptoms. Sometimes these medications can have side effects (like fatigue) but should go away after a few weeks of taking the normal dose. Also, if you have or have ever had an eating disorder do not take Wellbutrin. It can cause seizures. On a side note, do not listen to people who say that anti-depressants are bad for you or don't work. They help many people. I have also heard people say negative things about Prozac. Prozac affects everyone differently. Where it might make one person "crazy" it can really help another person."

Has anyone used Wellbutrin for depression and developed rosecea? I have been on Wellbutrin for years and I've developed redness of the face and neck. Not sure if it is related, but it's not a pleasant thing to live with. I don't think I could do without it for a week. Last time I even changed the dosage I had bad withdrawls.

knowsitall replied: "Can you let up on the Wellbutrin for a week to find out? Are you taking any other drugs that my cause this? Can you look up the side effects and see if facial redness is one of them? I know those types of drugs have about a hundred side effects. I took Wellbutrin for a month and then it stopped working. You are lucky to find something that works for you without stopping. I finally found out I have an underactive thyroid gland and when I started taking pill for that my depression slowly went away. So now I tell everyone with depression to have their thyroid gland checked with a simple blood test called the TSH test. You can even order it yourself from this place: I would also say use a sunblock whenever you go outside if you think the redness may be a hypersensitivity reaction to getting sun. I had that one time form some drug and I had been out like about 2 minutes. In the winter. I use Olay Complete for sensitive skin and it has SPF 15 in it and it is light and nice and my skin looks better from it. I feel bad for you having to take a drug for depression. I took about 12 of them and they either did not work or made me manic. The Wellbutrin worked the best but like I said it only worked for about a month or two and stopped and also made my hands shake bad. I sent you an email with my email address."

Will Wellbutrin help me with depression? How long do I take it before it helps me? Once I get off it, will I go back to being depressed or will I be normal? Please help me. Please share if there are any success stories with wellbutrin. I'm so sick and tired of being depressed all the time. I'm ready to fight this thing. I just need some words of encouragement.

Nicole replied: "Wellbutrin saved me life. Im on it combined with zoloft and i feel tons beeter than i did. aunestly i am so glad that i descided to get help. at first is is scary and awkward and you feel dejected when it doesnt help right away.....but give it time. it worked wonders for me and if it doesnt for you try soemthing else! dont gove up hope! youll figure this out. im sorry your going throught his tough time. healing will be work, but you have to do it to get on with your life. you have to fall apart to be put back together. if your not broken how can someone fix you? liek glass...when it is "hurt" it is still together but you can see all the little cracks....but to put it back together you have to break it even more. thats how this was for me. i had to break and in doing so i healed! good luck babe. keep on keeping on. when all else fails just focus on breathing...when doing so you accept life, you say yes to god...and when it hurts and you cant take another breathe...find someone who will hold your hand. i hope this med works for you! i am not off it yet but i think the end result is different for different people. really bad cases need to stay on meds the rest of thier lives[on low doeses] but others do well when they go off it after a year or two. its different for everyone else. feel better, muah!"

sweetiern34 replied: "Wellbutrin may help you with your depression. Some people find that they have to change medications once or twice before they find the right one. Anti-depressants usually take between 2 - 4 weeks to take affect. In the meantime, there are some small things that you can do to make yourself feel better. Going outside for walks and getting sunshine, eating properly, etc. I know it sounds like a lot, but it isn't. Take things very slowly, and set small goals for yourself. Setting small, attainable goals will help find your self-confidence again. Talking to a professional will also help. Some days you may have to make yourself do these things, so make sure you follow through with them. Exercise is the biggest thing. I also suffer from depression and have for years, but once I started going out for small walks every day, I feel better. Something as small as a walk around the block can make a sad person feel better. Instantly. Reason for that is that exercise releases hormones that are called "endorphins" which are better known as the "feel good hormones". These are the same hormones that are released during sex! So, the more you exercise, the better you feel. This is why people get addicted to working out or exercising. Certainly not the worst addiction in the world! I hope this help you. Good luck."

just us replied: "Wellbutrin should begin to work in a couple of weeks although you wont have FULL benefit for 6-8 weeks after starting it so try to be patient with it it is a very good anti depressant and if you are a smoker trying to quit it helps with the cravings"

unseen_force_22 replied: "Yes it's a helpful medicine, I took it for a while.... but withdrawal is a problem, and you need to research this carefully before making your decision. Alternatives require discipline."
