Lamictal Sleep Information in Questions
Tapering off lamictal affects sleeping habits? My Doc and I are currently working together to lower my Lamictal dosage. I am wondering for those who experienced this, did they any of the following: 1) Have sleeping problems? Lack of or oversleeping? 2) Stranger than usual dreams? 3) Awake all night and still not tired at all? 4) If artistic, did you experience over abundance of creativity? Or feeling too creative-depleted than usual? Thank you for your time and sharing. And YES, Doc and I are working together on this.

I just wanted to know If there was anything I can do or take that would help me sleep. I am taking lamictal? and am only getting 2 to 3 hours of sleep a night please help I am tired of being tired. thanks

What happens if you don't take LAMICTAL regularly, but say to go to sleep you take like 200? mg then only take them randomly... is that bad, what does LAMICTAL do anyway... (I know with 2 it makes my tongue feel tingly and numb)

Angelic1 replied: "I use to take lamictal. But not on a regular basis. My doctor would get pissed. He said it could have major harm on your body. and could even kill you. But i'm not dead, so i couldn't say for sure. But when i didn't take it, i would get really bad headaches, stomach aches, and feel sick to my stomach all the time."

frogaholic23 replied: "All I know is I LOVE LAMICTAL, but I don't take it for sleep, I take it what it's for, a mood stabilizer, i'm Bipolar. I wouldn't be alive today without it! anyway, enough bragging. All drugs have side effects, Lamictal for instance you have to watch out for a rash, it can turn deadly!!! there's some gruesome pitures on webmd.com, i think that's where i saw them? anyways, there's info on lamictal and side effects there too. most common side effects of most drugs are nausea/vommiting, diarrhea or contipation, headache, dizziness, weakness, drowsiness etc. Lamictal made me sleepy for the first few months I started it (300mgs) but I NEED to take it every day, if you don't need to, and you take it ramdomly, then I don't think there would be any ill effects. It would only be bad if you had side effects from it that outwieghted the good."

Is there a cure for Lamictal induced exhaustion? I've been on Lamictal on and off for three years to control epilepsy. When I was on it the first time, life was good and my seizures were controlled. I experienced little to no negative symptoms, and I was highly pleased with the meds. After I went off (after one year, doctors told me my EEG was normal) I didn't feel that much different. I had a seizure 6 months later, and got put back on Lamictal, and now the side effects are driving me nuts. I am exhausted ALL time time. I can't remember the last time when I said I was not tired. I get anywhere from 7 to 10 hours of sleep a night, and it's completely uninteruppted. I also feel dumber (if that makes sense). Reading is a lot harder, and sometimes I forget stupid things like how to subtract. Is this normal? Is there anything that I can do myself to make this better? Or should I suck it up and go to the doctor? If so, what other meds have the least amount of side effects?

Can Lamictal start causing tiredness after half a year of use? I started having trouble sleeping way to much about six months into taking the medication. Since then the only medication that has not changed is Lamictal. Can Lamictal maybe slowly wear down the body system, or cause something to build up?

What can I do for my Sleep Apnia while I'm waiting for the doctor office visit? Ok I belive I have sleep apnia cause I have times(every since I was little) where I can't breathe or wake up (this was confirmed by my doctor as he wanted me to get a referal to a sleep doctor (that what I call him) but with his appointments not opening up till either September or October and me not being sure where I'm going to school, what can I do to limit my sleep apania issues. Also I wonder does the medicine I've been taking recently (Steerra and Lamictal) have anything to do with it.

hey i have a question about a drug combo: lamictal and lithium? im 16 years old, relatively average in height, weight although a bit thin and a pretty bad bipolar although i seldom realize it. right now im currently taking 1200 mg of lithium a day (in 4 300mg pills a day) and 400 mg (in 4 pills as well 100mg each). im also taking a pill every night to make me sleep although my family wont let me know exactly what it is as well as a pain relief pill for bad days. now, they are surely stopping mania and giving me far less headaches and grief. but what ive been feeling lately are pretty bad muscle spasms, constantly shaking hands, and once in awhile vertigo. are these caused by the lithium or lamictal? if they arent then i definitely want to know what the other 2 pills i have to take are. sorry i meant 400mg of lamictal

Angelita replied: "Probably the reason all this side effects are coming up is because those are lot of pills!!! WHOA.................."

Poetgirl76 replied: "Lithium can cause trembling hands...not sure about the lamictal (I am on it too and used to be on Lithium). Let yur doctor know about your symptoms, especially the muscle spasms. It's weird that your parents won't tell you what they are giving you. That would make me very uncomfortable. Can you just ask your doctor?"

Mike J replied: "That is a lot of medication. The answer is never more meds. I take lamictal as an anticonvulsant and it's been awesome - no side effects. I take it with lexapro for depression. It's probably a drug interaction. Check it out with the doc."

Curious replied: "Lamictal has been known to have the adverse (not normal/bad) reactions of tremor and vertigo. It is also known to cause muscle spasms. You definitely need to report these symptoms to your doctor. You should discontinue use of this drug if the adverse reactions occur or you may need to have your dosage adjusted."

Dr. Bungholio replied: "Lamictal and Lithium are very good drugs, commonly used in combination to treat Bipolar Disorder. You should call your physician immediately to discuss the symptoms you have described. Sometimes, drugs that are in the same class as Lamictal can cause 2 different, but equally dangerous side effects. The first is called Tardive Dyskinisia which is a neurological problem brought on by drugs like Lamictal. The second is a condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome or NMS. Anytime you are on a psychiatric drug and experience muscle spasms and tremors in combination with headache, this should be evaluated by a physician who is experienced in using these types of drugs. Hope this helps!"

Will taking lamictal and wellbutrin help my bipolar disorder? I'm starting to take them both and I can't sleep, just feel a bit detached, and I get depressed very easily. Will those medications help me at all?

insanew/nasty intervals ofsanity replied: "Lamictal has worked very well for my Bipolar II Ultradian rapid cycling. I can't say the same for the Wellbutrin. I was a basket case. My pdoc kept me on the cocktail for about 6 months, then took me off the Wellbutrin and kept me on the Lamictal. About a week or so of coming off the Wellbutrin, things got better! All people react differently to the same medications. I would consult your pdoc and let him/her know that you might need a medication adjustment. I wish you all the best! Take care! Hugs, Lesli"

Roxy5 replied: "The only way to know if those specific meds will help you is to take them for a while. Everyone's body react differently to psychiatric meds. I'm on Lamictal and Wellbutrin, and it's a good combo for me. Give them some time and if the side effects don't wear off, talk to your doctor about trying something else. It can take a while to find the right cocktail to stabilize bipolar."

foxychick24 replied: "My senior year of high school I was diagnosed w/ level 1 rapid cycling bipolar. I was taking zyprexa & lexapro and gained 15 pounds in 2 weeks. Then they switched my meds to Lithium and Wellbutrin. I started having "scares" with my bloodwork that my thyroid was not working properly so they changed my medicine to Tegretol and Wellbutrin. I have been on so many different combinations and being bipolar, you will probalby have to switch medications periodically and BE SURE TO GET YOUR BLOODWORK DONE EVERY 3 MONTHS! I have never been on lamictal, but I like how tegretol is working. Wellbutrin has been wonderful for me for years now. It has been 6 years that I have been on medication... each combination of medication may work differently for each person because it is not the same EXACT chemical imbalance in each person, but the best way to know if the meds are working is take them every day, every dose and for at least 3 months. It can take MONTHS for your body to get used to the medicine, so do not give up. If you are having problems sleeping I would advise speaking to your doctor to see what he/she would say about Trazadone. I take 1/2 of a 100mg tablet of Trazadone each night and that helps me sleep. Trazadone is not an actual sleeping pill, but it helps for anxiety and relaxes you so you can fall asleep. I take it to sleep, not anxiety. There are also options like Ambien (which I was taking) but sleeping pills can be highly addictive so I would try Trazadone first."

Is Mirtazapine helpful when you cant sleep? My doctor prescribed me Lamictal for bi-polar and Mirtazapine so I can sleep but when I looked up Mirtazapine it said it was for depression so I'm wondering have anyone took it and does it help you sleep without making you tired in the morning? I know we all are different but I just need some advise.

hawk284 replied: "it does help you to sleep. just be sure you allow yourself at least 8 hours to sleep because if you dont then youll be EXTREMELY tired in the morning."
