Can lithium-ion battery blown up these day? I have some gadgets which use lithium-ion battery as power source. But I started to wonder, will it blown up (one of the gadgets is Nikon coolpix battery, bought in 2008)?
PS: sometimes it get heating up when it's switched on for a certain amount of time
daniel g replied: "Li-ion batteries, for their size, can deliver a large amount of current.
a combination of chemical reaction, and current flow, can make these
batteries quite warm.
they would most likely burst if shorted, and the lithium contained
in them is reactive to water.
it is normal for your coolpix to get warm to the touch, after being on for a couple minutes."
Leo H replied: "they can but it is rare, most are now "protected" by internal circuits, if it gets VERY hot remove it and contact Nikon"
can a laptop with a lithium-ion battery blow up? is it really true?
jamand replied: "It is unlikely but, that said - it has happened in the past with faulty manufactured batteries. Can't remember which company it was but there was a problem with one particular make of battery that over heated and exploded. Might have been one of the Sony range - but don't quote me on that"
evilducky replied: "i doubt it you cant really blow up a laptop un-intentionally anyway"
deever88 replied: "Well,
according to some stuff i read up on a while back, and this video, it entails that there's many variable conditions in which this can allegedly occur.
The most obvious conditions being blunt trauma, excessive heat, faulty battery packs, and faulty breaker circuits within the laptop, some of the mainstream causes of such an occurance.
Check the video in the sources, this is in controlled conditions where such obvious variables are put to test."
Can generic batteries blow the bulb on a surefire flashlight? I bought some generic rechargeable 3v lithium batteries on ebay for my surefire, I put them in after charging them initially and the bulb turned on for a second then went. I"m not sure if it's blown or even if I should use these batteries again. Any ideas?
I don't want to spend $12 on a pair of duracell 3v123a lithium batteries just to find out either, I'm not that rich.
Alice, your answer was pathetic,
the link you sent gave a saving of only
$1.02, hardly a match to my alleged "rip off".
Lithium-ion batteries CAN be used in Surefire flashlights, so you CAN be sure what I put in mine, I detailed it out pretty clearly.
Next time you go to answer a question, read it first, leave your condescending and patronising generic thoughts in your childish little head and please don't answer any of my questions in the future.
Alice Lockwood replied: "Lithiums are not rechargeable. Lithium-ion batteries are, but that's not what goes in a Surefire.
So, not really sure what you put in your light.
In any case, $12 for a pair of batteries is a rip off.
You can get them for half that here:

As hybrid transportation grows in popularity is their any studies that will show the impact to the passenger? in a fatal collision? Will exotic battery power, like lithium batteries blow up, electrocute everthing in the car, would it be like a cell phone near a gas station with static?
dawnisright replied: "Hybrids are extremely dangerous. Their thin body design, (to make them light), crumple like a soda can on impact. And you're right, the high voltage and battery acid pose a huge risk in an accident.
Hybrids and economy cars aren't built for the safety minded people, they're built to save fuel so there will be more available for the people that drive the safe cars."
UCANTCME replied: "Whey they do use lithium batteries remember that they use cobalt in their formulas, which tends to explode.
Automakers are scrambling to find an alternative to cobalt which would provide the same amount of power but are having no luck..
As for the safety issues and I know that I will get hammered for this, they are built very light weight and yes even though they are rated safe you really need to see one of them after an accident, there is not much left from the ones that I have seen while working with insurance companies.
Another thing that I have read concerning hybrid vehicles is that they are too quite, yes too quite and many more people have been hit by them as well."
charging lithium battery in China with Electrical adapters? I'm going to China in a week. I just bought a digital camera with a lithium battery. I also bought electrical adapters from Target. These adapters have the names of the countries on it with the corresponding adapter. Anywho, my concern is I'll be over in China, go to charge my lithium battery & some how blow it up. I've had problems with adapters before. I plugged a curling iron into one in France & fried my hair & the iron. Perhaps I used the wrong adapter. But anyway, has anyone used an adapter to charge up a lithium battery in China? If so, did you have problems? Thanks in advance-M
Havok replied: "I assume you need to convert China's 220volts to your countries 110volt. There are two different coverters, one for items of 50watts and below, and one for 50-1600watts. For small electrically items, such as your battery charger, you will need the 50watt and below converter. I Live here in China, and I do it all the time."
bookish replied: "Where in China? In Hong Kong, I don't remember needing an adapter. In Shanghai, we were able to get one from the hotel. It was pretty large, which surprised me."
cokewww replied: "I have done it on my digital camera as well as laptop - no problem at all during my last couple of trips to China."
grendeth replied: "Its no problem at all, both China and the US uses the same voltage."
problem with Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries? I bought 4 rechargeable 3v 123 batteries to power my surefire torch/flashlight, they charged up ok first time, but they've blown my surefire bulb twice now. I'm not putting them in again I'm just wondering why they flashed and blew the bulb instantly?
I know surefire does rechargeable batteries and lithium rechargeables exist, but these have 1000mAh written on them and it scares me. Can someone educate me on electricity since I'm obviously not understanding this.
Hwrd replied: "Lithium batteries are powerful batteries, many camera's and laptops have them, and you can't even bring extra ones on airplanes anymore. I don't think the bulb should be burning out, unless you have the wrong batteries or bulbs."
cmos solutions replied: "Maybe the flashlight is designed for regular 1.5V cells,
so you are burning the bulb out with 6V from the two cells in series instead of the expected 3V. NiMH cells may be a better match. They are rechargeable, but put out a nominal 1.5V instead or 3."

good answers so far, except the 3rd. I checked and the batteries are 3v, the torch I've used for years and I'm 100% it's 6v, has always taken 2 throwaway 3v's. I'm none the wiser still.
Shade replied: "Check what the rated voltage is for your bulb. If you put a higher voltage bettery in your torch the bulb will blow. If it isn't on the torch it is on the side of the bulb."
Johnie 13 replied: "The 10000mAh means that they can last for 1000 hours with a 1 milli amp draw or 100 hours with a 10 milli amp draw. Could it be you have the wrong VOLTAGE BATTERIES? might be you need 1.5volt or 1.2 volt the extra voltage in the 3volt ones would instantly burn out the bulb. another solution could change the bulb to match the power out put you have. just add the voltage together for all the batteries required ,if two at 3v each, total is =6v. if three batt. total = 9v and so on."

Yet another Pandoras Battery question? ok... i am hacking my psp and i need to make a pandoras battery to do it. but i dont have a soldering iron. i have the original battery with the IC04 pin on the inside ofthe circut board. and i know i have to remove the final pin on the right side. so i have heard on a couple web sites that it is possible to do this using only a razor and kind of sawing/prying through the pin to remove it from the circut board. is this truly possible?? and if so are there any risks in doing this. like shorting the battery or it blowing up the lithium ion for that minute? i dont want to blow my fucking hand off doing this you know?????
so honest answers only. i only want answers from ppl who know first hand if this is tru or not..
10 points for best answer!!!

OOOOOHHHH Man- i totally blew it -- and I need help --wow? ok this is not my field-- i answer ?'s in dogs, health and such -- gotta cell phone boo-boo i am almost too embarrassed to ask--
Ok any miracle fixes or any pointers - possible solutions -- ANYTHING that may help is greatly appreciated - Ok here goes -- what a dork -- I washed my cell phone -- its real clean but real dead-- Its a motorola razr V3m, its got a 3.7v lithium battery i took the battert out opened up everything i could blew it out and thought it might dry out - and maybe heal itself by morning-- this was a Christmas present from my husband-- its one of those cute girlie lilac color ones-- i couldn't find my matching lilac holster for it, and was at a funrel today, had to put it in this funny side pocket of a dress and put the dress in the wash - one of those new front loader highly efficient washers-- and my phone is efficiently clean and thoroughly pissed OFF meaning DEAD and dead. ANY miracle cures or stories of possible restoration - and how to's
ok i'm getting some good answers-- dark l and liberty-- those help a lot-- thanks everyone-- still open for that miracle out there -- but id on't think i will get much more different info than all of you so far - thank you --- ok the dot on the battery and the phone are pink -- does that mean the company will know it got wet, i can't remember if that dot was always oink or not - hhmmmmm-- getting out my warranty and paperwork right now .... keep the good advice coming - my hubbys asleep - hope i can find a sure fix in some way or another before i go to bed - eeeeek
kim_rukawa11 replied: "why shud you washed your phone???? now i believe that common sense is not common now., if you want to clean your phone go to the authorized centers and let them do the job.,
buy a new phone and dont wash it again"
dA Oq GRiNgA replied: "hey hey now... we dont hve to get fiesty....sorry hunnie... theres really nothing u can do now..maybe find a cheap one on ebay???"
sean1201 replied: "Maybe you should have your dog lick it. I heard they can lick things back to health."
Sophia replied: "I don't think you should have washed it...But everyone makes mistakes! Don't beat yourself up about it! Personally, I have a RAZR, and I HATE it! It's horrible. RAZRs SUCK! I had mine for less than a year, and it's already broken! I think you should go and by a new phone. There is no way you can get that one to work like new again."
Liberty replied: "Tell them you lost it. I'm sure you have some insurance thing on it. Look over the fine print on the contract and look for a way out."
bernie D replied: "haha i did this to my bud phone, anyways their are 2 things you can do, first go ahead you use your insurance that you pay for 5 buck or whatever you pay with your cell phone company to get it replace for free as long as you send them your current phone or let it sit out for awhile in the sun a day isn't long enough, i'm from texas i know and then go out to like walmart and buy a battery for it and if it doesn't work then....you need to call and report it to your cell phone company but when i did that to my friend phone i waited it out and made him think he wash it when he was drunk and after about a week i think it was we went out and bought a battery and it work fine, let say he still think it was him but not he feel smarter because it work like it was never put in the washer:D hope i help ya some gotta get a battery b/c it probaly got fried in the washer!!!"
Dark L replied: "The only thing you can do is leave it out to air dry and DO NOT TURN IT ON.
HOPEFULLY by morning it will be all better, and just a good lesson to scare you.
But more likely than not, the circuitry has short-circuited.
Basically what happens there is the electricity going through the phone jumps off the path's it's allowed to cross onto paths that normally don't allow that much electricity, and therefore those tracks burn up, since electricity will cause heat.
What you can do is look at your warranty or your insurance plan on it (IF you have one) and see if water damage is covered. If not.... I'm soo sorry to hear about your loss >.<"
Dink replied: "LOL I hate to tell you but you're more then likely screwed..i've done this soooooooo many time. I have a Motorola Razr as well...they're horrrrrrible phones! I dropped mine in a glass of vodka before and it dried out suprisingly... If it doesn't dry out within a few days then it will never get better. Also....if you have warranty that would work, except where you got it wet....the dot on the back will be pink. So, you can't have warranty either and will pay big bucks for a new one.
Sorry! I've been in the same situation lol
Edit- Yes, the pink dot is how the company determines whether the phone is wet or not. Sometimes you automatically have a replacement phone with your warranty. It really just depends on that. Sometimes it will cover if your phone gets wet as well. Razrs are defo not the ideal phone. They sure do look nice, and have a lot of features, but over all they're horrible. I've went through over 5 different razr phones in the past 2 years. I had one 2 that froze up for no reason, one got wet, the other was dropped and didn't work...etc...They break to easy, I would advise trying really hard not to drop it. I have problems with throwing cell phones against walls lol...so yeah that isn't a good idea with Razrs."
Aron L replied: "listen most warranties cover lost phones so just throw it away and say it got stolen and theyll replace it. when i got a scratch on my phone i told cingular it was going slowly and they replaced it so the warranty is really good."
Ashley replied: "Well..dont feel like an idiot. I dropped my V3 down a PUBLIC toilet. can you say yuck-o. I had to have it replaced..i let it fan dry...then hit it with the blow dryer.....then put it on the dash of my car....nothing...it was a goner. And you cant have it replaced on your warranty since the phone has a dot thats under the battery that turnd red when the phone gets wet...so they will know....if you have insurance now would be a good time to use it!"
Does anyone else have RC setups, if yeah lets hear what ya got.? i love going down to the track or the hobby shop and looking at all the stuff ill never get, but taking joys in showing a kid what i have and explain how hell never have it. No but seriously what your set up.
I have a an HPI RS4 1/10 on-road electric drifter thats fun to play with inside. i have the old school barracuda body (dont like ricers), all wheel drive setup 50/50.
I also have the HPI Hellfire which is my basher i just take that thing and blow it to peice's
and the other thing which is addicting are those little XMODS i actually have 9, 2 06 mustangs, 1 firebird, 2 lifted f-150's, 2 camaros modded to be on the EVO chassis, a G35, and EVO. All the cars have all radioshack mods, bearings, lights, engine, suspension, all wheel drive, rims, tires, drifting kit, wild body, and lithium batteries. I got a nice setup but it my hobbies too, i got a track for in my garage. Anyone else on here got a savage or anything?
yarnlady_needsyarn replied: "You would really love to join the RC Universe. There is a forum on that site that is full of people for you to talk to about your set-up."
blue_home_iguana replied: "I have built from the ground up a fully Radio Controlled Ship as well as a fully Radio Controlled ( flying saucer ) with hover manoeuvrability. For the ship... it took me a little over 16 mths and for the flying saucer it took me well past 2 years to build it."
Watts the Deal With Lithium-Ion Batteries?
Lithium-ion batteries have an energy density almost twice that of the NiMH ... "Any battery can blow up if treated improperly," he points out, adding that ...
