Macrobid And Birth Control Pills in Q&A
Macrobid and Birth Control Pills.? I am taking Macrobid twice daily at 100mg. I read that it is bacteriostatic at low concentrations but can become bactericidal (killing the bacteria) at high concentrations. Is the prescription I am on causing it to be bactericidal, therefore changing the effectiveness of my birth control pills? Yes, my doctor prescribed Macrobid to me. I am planning on being sexually active. I just want to know how precautious/nervous I should be if my birth control pill is ineffective.

does macrobid have any effect on birth control pills? I am taking Macrobid for a bladder infection and I wanted to make sure that it doesn't decrease the effect of the birth control pill. Does anyone know??

EmilyRN replied: "Unforunately, Macrobid is one of the antibiotics most likely to have an effect on your birth control, making it less effective at preventing pregnancy. One symptom you might see is spotting between periods, one sign that it is affecting them. While on antibiotics, and up to a week afterward, you should use a backup method of contraception if you choose to have sexual intercourse. Check with your doctor for his recommendation though as to how long he thinks you should use a backup method. He'll know more about the dosing and your condition and can give you a more accurate time frame than I can over the internet. Feel free to message me with further questions. EmilyRN"

Does anyone know if there is interference between Macrobid and the Birth Control Pill? I am starting Macrobid today to clear up a bladder infection. I only have 1 day left of my birth control pack. I wait a week then start a new package. I am wondering if their will be any intereference? Thanks! The pharmacist said something about it being an anti-septic and not working the same as an antibiotic. Therefore, she said its not like penicillen, its just there to clear the bacteria. Maybe I misunderstood her though?

josiemulder replied: "Yes, most antibiotics interfere with birth control pills. They activate enzymes that metabolize the hormones in birth control pills. Essentially, the hormones are broken down so fast that they don't work on you. Whether or not it will inactivate the first pills of your next pack depends on how long you will be taking the macrobid. By no means do you want to stop taking the macrobid early, you need to finish all those pills. But you should consider using back up birth control (such as condoms) until you are finished with the macrobid. Hope this helps!"

daddyrx replied: "Thumbs up Josie. But backup birth control until the antibiotics are done PLUS one week to 10 days."

Pregnant after stopping birth control and taking meds for infection? I was on ortho tri-lo for about 3 months. During the last few weeks, I started getting really bad bladder problems. I couldn't eat without having the feeling of throw-up in my mouth. I also felt so hot and feverish. I assumed that it was the side effects from the birth control pills or I was pregnant. I went to the doctors and they prescribed me nitrofurantoin mono cap also known as macrobid and zantac. I got a pregnancy test and it came out negative. Since then, I stopped taking the birth control pills, and now my period has not started. I'm about a week and a half late or more. I want to know whether the stopping of the pills or taking the medication I was given affected my period. If my period doesn't come in a week, I plan to take another pregnancy test. Is this normal?

I took a single antibiotic pill after unprotected sex, would this affect my birth control? I had an extra nitrofurantoin/ macrobid antibiotic left over from when I had UTI. I get them frequently, so I took it after sex.. forgetting that the birth control pill and antibiotics do not mix. Does taking a single dose (100 mg) affect the effectiveness of birth control? If so, with Plan B.. would I still take it with birth control on the same day? If not, do I skip that pill? Also, would this affect my menstrual cycle?

Pregnancy, Macrobid(UTI antibiotic) while on birth control? I am currently on b/c pills and take them consistantly and during the same time frame every night. On Jan. 1 I got a UTI and my doctor prescribed Macrobid. I took it for the full two weeks and I started my placebo pills on the 7th of Jan and got a normal period. I continued taking another pack of pills and I just recently got a period on Tuesday, but it was alot heavier and only lasted for 2 days. I have suffered from pregnancy symptoms for about the past three weeks-VERY nauseous during the nights, swollen and enlarged breasts, constipation, bloating and etc. I first just thought it was PMS, but it still has not gone away and keeps getting worse. I have taken two HPT's about 5 days ago, but they both were negative. Is it to early to test and may i be pregnant? Oh, i forgot to mention i have been sexually active almost every other night for the two months in question.....Thanks!!!

Macrobid and Oral Contraceptives? Hello. I was taking macrobid for a UTI. I finished on a Thursday. I had sex (unprotected) on that Friday. I stayed on my birth control pills throughout the time of taking the antibiotics. Does this antibiotic decrease the effectiveness of my BC? Do you think I am at great risk to get pregnant even though I was off the antibiotics for a day? (Even though, yes, I know having unprotected sex is a great risk but I am on BC, and yes I know that isn't always effective but it has been for me for about 2 years.)

sokokl replied: "When on the antibiotic that could have affected the pill depending on how many days ago you finished. However, I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say."

Nitrofur and Birth Control? I started my period today, which means I'm supposed to start taking the pill tomorrow. But I am currently on Nitrofur(Generic for Macrobid) right now. I'm not positive, but I think that interferes with the pill. So my question is, do I still start the pill tomorrow and just use back up protection for an extra week, or am I supposed to wait until next period to start the pill? Just...what am I supposed to do?

Taking antibiotics after sex, is it worth the risk of getting pregnant? I have had recurrent UTI's all my life, and am getting as many as one infection a month since I've been married and sexually active. My urologist suggested I take an antibiotic (macrobid) after sex to prevent getting so many UTI's. My main concern about this is that it will most likely make my birth control pill ineffective. We use condoms already along with the BCP, but I'm a bit nervous about only having one working form of birth control. I have so many health problems right now, so I really can't afford to get pregnant right now. And my husband's about ready to quit sex altogether due to the infections it keeps giving me. It's getting discouraging for us. Is it worth the risk in order to not get as many UTI's? Has anyone else gotten pregnant as a result of taking antibiotics after sex even with the condom? I could use the advice of others who also take or have taken antibiotics after having sex. Before anyone mentions this, I just want to add that I already wash my genital area and void my bladder before and after sex. And none of these preventative measures helped me. And I can't take cranberry because it causes an IC flare-up for me.

HALFPINT_31_98 replied: "Bless your heart darlin'. You both must be frustrated. Have you considered a diaphragm in conjunction with condoms? Have you tried something low tech for the UTI's like daily servings of cranberry juice? or cranberry capsules?"

Thanks Josie that was very helpful. I'll email you if I have any other questions or concerns! :) I get paranoid also. We ALWAYS use my pill and condoms so I guess what I'm nervous about is the condoms messing up. Anyways, thanks again.

josiemulder replied: "Haha I'm back! :) It doesn't matter if the macrobid is working at a cidal or static level. Once again, I'm not sure about that dose if it is cidal or static or which is appropriate for your infection. I get to dive into that next semester. :) The way it reacts with your birth control is, it activates the enzymes (makes the enzymes work harder and faster) that metabolize the hormones in your birth control pill. So instead of the hormones being absorbed into your body and being slowly metabolized (the slow metabolism gives the hormones time to work in your body), the hormones get metabolized too fast and don't get to work in your body. It's no big deal, we usually just tell women to use a backup form of birth control, such as condoms, until they finish the antibiotics. In your case, since you aren't taking any active pills during the week that you are taking the antibiotic, you're probably fine (there's no hormones to be metabolized too fast to work). However, if it was me, I'd use a condom anyway just to be on the safe side (I get a little paranoid about that stuff). Hope this helps, and if you're still curios about it you can email me at. Or call your pharmacist - she will always be a great source of info for you concerning your health care."
