Erythromycin or minocycline for the treatment of acne? For acne?

What acne treatment has worked for you? How old are you, what is the name of the treatment, the cost, and how bad was your acne and for how long did you have it? I'm 15, have had acne since 11. First it was mild but then it got to be moderate and it's all over my face now and my chest and back. I've tried proactiv and it worked while I had mild acne but then I stopped and it came back MORE. I've also been on Minocycline and it helped my body acne but not so much on my face. I'm wondering what else is out there. I want to try Accutane but afraid of the side effects. Thanks! I have no family history of bad acne like me. My parents and my grandma says I'll grow out of it but I don't believe them. Dx Everyone has such good skin! My grandma is 67 and she doesn't even have saggy skin. But I'm stuck with a pizza face.

geneva.nelson replied: "I hate to tell y ou that your family is partially right, hormonal changes later will make the acne lessen. BUt in the mean time, try not to change products so often. Accutane is not worth the side effects. Retin-A is a similar medicine but I think is better than Accutane. I started using Retin-A at 16....but then my dermatologist usggested that I go in birth control ( before you laugh it is a hormonal balancer than can clear up acne) So I did and bean using ProActiv. Results did not happen overnight and I was VERY impatient....but withn 4 months I had almost completely stopped breaking out. I would have an occasional break out ( usually stress) but My skin was notably better. I have since gotten dermabrasion and chemical peel treatments for the scarring. At 16 I would have never guessed my skin would look like it does now. I am 22 now and battled acnes for about 7 years and I think I have almost won! The most important thing is to stick with products for a while, drink lots of water ( it really does help) and a lot of it is just nature and hormones. Good Luck!"

redlily_712 replied: "Proactive worked really good for me and I only had to use it for a couple weeks to see a solution. If you are 15 you probably almost at the end of the puberty/pimple stage. So u can try to wait it out and just keep your face clean with a good toner or astringent at night and when u wake up in the morning. Or if the zits are really bad try proactive and and continue using it. This might be the key for you, if it came back when u stopped the first time. And your Grandma could be right, you could just be more prone to acne. I would suggest proactive (this worked better for me than any of the dermatologists' stuff plus it's less expensive) just stay on it and stick to the routine of cleaning your face in the morning and evening. Basis is a good mild soap and they even have a medicated one for breakout control. and then make sure you are keeping your face clean, like watch the make up you wear, try to limit it, also not too much lotion on your face other than proactive's and make sure you are washing your pillow cases and sheets often...these could be breaking you out. Hope this helps"

Yumi replied: "Im 19. Im currently using CLINIQUE products.(trying out) mine is occasional breakouts all over, been having it for i think, 5-6years. Did tried PROACTIV, but i think its not suitable for my skin. Tried Body Shop T3, quite good but takes longer to see result cos its natural active ingredients unlike other brand. Did heard before when u grow it will go away. but i think tts craps! cos i m struck wit it for so many years! and same wit ur suitation, NO FAMILY HISTORY of acne skin. SAD.. But i think it might be due to my lack of proper care and tons of makeup, insufficent sleep and not balance diet. -I sugguest u to try out products with natural active ingredients, anti-baterial so its more gentle on skin. -Stick to daily regime of CLEANES, TONE, MOISTURE and weekly treatment of MASK. - AVOID SCRUB for acne prone skin. -Remember dont touch ur face often, hands contains alot of unseen baterial. -MIN use of makeup. Anyway hear from my beautician before, that in some cases, acne on chin area - means body didnt detox properly. cheeks - mostly stress or hair brushing against it. forehead- mostly becox of hair."

Jessica replied: "he products you are using, are they Salsylic Acid or Benzoyl peroxide? BP can be VERY drying. I personally like SA better. Salsylic acid it really good. It is in almost all acne washes. Benzoyl Peroxide is too drying for me! Try finding a face lotion with SA in it. Clean and Clear has a good moisturizer with SA and it helps keep pimples at bay. It is only about $5 a bottle and lasts about 2 months and you can get it at your local store. I have used this in the past and it works well. Personally, I use Biore products (which you get over the counter. Their products range from $5-$10). They are harsh on pimples, but not on your face. Personally, Proactive didn't work for me. I have been using Biore products for over a year and I hardly ever break out! Occasionally I will get one or two, but nothing bad. I use Biore Ice Cleanser and warming facial scrub every morning. And then 3-4 day s a week I use Biore purging pore cream scrub. For body acne I use Neutrogena acne body wash I never break out on my body. It gets 110 in summer so sweat in inevitably, yet I never break out. Give it a try. All of it is cheap too. About $5-10 depending on what you buy! Salsylic acid it really good. It is in almost all acne washes. Benzoyl Peroxide is too drying for me! I think you will just need to experiment with products until you find what works for you. Remember, it can take 1 month for products to fully begin working! Good Luck!"

Does anone know if Minocycline affects your menstrual cycle/ period? I have been taking Minocycline as acne treatment but since IvE been taking the medicine my period seems to have stopped but when I stopped the medicine, I had my period. So I think its the medicine I aM scared that it might have affected my reproductive system and I might never have a baby.

Mikey D replied: "Minocycline is a tetracycline product and has been around for 30+ years so I doubt that it will cause problems with reproduction. If you become pregnant, I would stop the minocycline right away as I think it can cause teeth problems in the developing child, just like tetracycline can. To get a difinitive answer to your question, call the nearest Poison Control Center, which also serves as a drug information center. Their staff can look it up real quick and give you an authoratitive answer.(they don't mind answering questions like this, in their "down" time). Good Luck"

Q replied: "Are you on birth control pills? It might interfere with birth control pills so you'll need to rely on another form of contraception."

Trouble Sleeping as side effect of minocycline? Hi, I've been taking minocycline for acne treatment for the past week now (I'm 15 years old) and I've noticed that I have a very difficult time falling asleep. Sometimes I don't fall asleep until about 3:00 in the morning even when I go to bed around 11. I was just wondering if this is a possible side effect of the medicine I'm taking.

Kate from Drugs.com replied: "Insomnia is not a known side effect of minocycline, but that is not to say that it isn't being caused by minocycline. The known side effects of Minocycline are stated below. Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using minocycline and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision; fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;urinating less than usual or not at all;pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness;severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting, fast heart rate;loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness. Less serious side effects may include: sores or swelling in your rectal or genital area; mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach upset; white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips; swollen tongue, trouble swallowing; or vaginal itching or discharge. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect."

Acne treatment-makeup-suncreen... question? I just started taking Minocycline for my acne treatment. I read that I need to use a sunscreen because minocycline can make my skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn. Can I use makeup that contains suncreen instead of an actual sunscreen? I'm guessing makeup containing suncreen isn't as effective, but am I really in a position where I need full-on protection from the sun??

DaniSuzanni replied: "Each person will have a different level of heightened sun sensitivity from the medication. It's best to play it safe by using sunscreen in some form. It really doesn't matter which (as long as the SPF is high enough for you). It's easier to use a combo and it may be easier on skin that's prone to breaking out. There are many brands that combine sunscreen of varying levels with foundation. I have sensitive skin and my favorite combo is Bare Minerals. The coverage is really, really good (without looking like makeup) and it doesn't make me breakout (which a lot of liquid sunscreens and liquid foundation/sunscreen combos seem to do). You can order it online if you don't live near a Sephora, etc. and the colors are easy to determine - you just pick a skin tone. The starter kit is a good way to go in the beginning because it has the special brushes and you get 2 foundation colors to blend to just the right color."

cori. replied: "i'm on minocycline right now too. they don't make me more sensitive to the sun, but i get dizzy in the sun. anyways, you should always use some sort of sunscreen. using a make-up with sunscreen should be fine though. but if you just started taking it, i would wait a while to use the make-up. clear up your face a little bit first. hope i helped you and good luck! :]"

How long does skin remain sensitive to sunlight after acne treatment? (Please Help, 10 pts for you?)? I was on Minocycline 50 mg for about 3 months. The medicine causes skin to be very sensitive to sunlight, like many other acne medications. How long will it take for the medicine to get out of my system (just stopped it yesterday) or will my skin be permanently sensitive to sunlight? Please help, 10 points to best answer (:

LuNaTiKa replied: "Well, I know a lot about skin problem and products for it, but I don't know much about medicine (Minocycline) and it's ingredients, but I work with a professional (an esthetician) and if you want I can give you the website and the phone number so you can write to her, or if you prefer it you can talk to her on the phone, she'll be glad to help you out and talk to you. Sorry I couldn't help you personally."

Mark M replied: "your skin will not be permanently sensitive. usually these drugs are out of your system in 2-4 weeks. The sensitivity to light shouldnt affect you within a week."

Took Minocycline for acne and got the Lupus like symptoms, blood in my feces, & painful defecation. Help? I have stopped the Minocycline and the Lupus joint pain is gone but the other problem remains. I also have undigested food in my feces. All this started after starting the Minocycline, Differin, and Benzaclin treatment for my face. I don't want to have a colonoscopy if someone knows what is going on. Has anyone else had this happen and what did you have to do to treat it?

x_o_x_pixie_x_o_x replied: "I think you should see a doctor sweetie. I know its a scary thing but only a doctor can tell you exactly what is going on."

Threejalapenos replied: "*Gasp* oh no....I'm on the same stuff!! Hope I don't end up with the same thing. You should probably call your dermatologist and explain what happened to her/him, it may have been an allergic reaction or a side effect. Either way, you probably need to change your prescription and your dermatologist may tell you you need to see a doctor to treat the problems."

chillsister replied: "Yikes. I believe medications are for the most part evil. I would eat food that is high in fiber like vegetables. Eat salads with a variety of veges. Drink lots of filtered (reverse osmosis) water or Perrier or San Pellegrino. Stay off soda, coffee and any drink or food with high fructose corn syrup. In fact don't eat anything that has chemical crap in it. That alone should cure your acne. Hopefully your symptoms will go away once the chemical the doctor gave you get out of your system."

Twinkle my star! replied: "im sorry to hear this im sure you dont have lupis but i would seriously go to the doctors i had a colonoscpy 2 weeks ago and im only 17 and been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis ulcers on my colons and i will tell you that you should not be afraid of the colonoscpy the doctors are nice and they will put you to sleep so fast you wont even no what hit you and you wake up and they told you the prcedure took 2 hours but it feels like no time has gone buy be strong and see a doctor if i can do it you can best wishes and good luck plus if you go through with it which you shoudl the doctors can help you instead of you being scared"
