What are the longterm effects of Remeron (Mirtazapine) antidepressant? Remeron is not a typical SSRI. It is a SSNRI - Selective Serotonin Noradrenergic Reuptake Inhibitor, I believe. I have been on it since I was 14, and am now 22 years old. Your personal knowledge is appreciated! And also if you have personal experience with being on longterm Remeron please share also! Thanks :)

Anyone else on the antidepressant, Mirtazapine (Zispin)? I take just 7.5mg @ night, instead of the recommended 15 -30mg and find that after a week my mood is GREAT! Not a fake / false feeling either, just a real zest for life - how it should feel. I thought i'd ask this question seeing as Mirtazapine does not come up in a search on Yahoo! Answers so far! Be great to hear your experiences on Mirtazapine....

bigdownunderx replied: "I take zispin, but i am looking to have my medication changed. I dont get the benefits from them that you mention."

Sabre780101 replied: "I take 45 mg of Mertazapine at night and only today asked my Psych doc for something else as I don't think it still works , I'm very down so I'm not even getting the false okay feeling you mention. However I would tell your doc you have changed the dose and describe the change you feel. Maybe you are better and don't need Ad's anymore so you might be able to further reduce and get off them altogether. I'm desperate to get better my life is in tatters."

audrey_o replied: "I have nursed plenty of people prescribin Mirtazapine. You must be one of the lucky ones...as The majority of people i've come into contact with don't notice any real benefits and usually request a change to something else. Medications for mental illness are very much a "Horses for courses" trial... What helps one person may not help the next and its very trial and error. Anyway...I'm glad your noticing the positive symptoms and are doing well on Zispin."

im_a_s3cr3t replied: "I used to take this and found from day one that it would knock me right out every day. It was good in one sense that I didnt have to be awake to face 'it all', I was so sleepy that even when I was awake I found it hard to talk to my partner or get up and make my tea..... needless to say I asked to come off these after 3 months. I am happy that they work for you though! :-D"

.**D**. replied: "hiya ive been on them for about a year and they are great but after a while the feeling does fade i had to up the dose to 45mg but all good things come to a end they stoped working and i have to change them for new ones injoy them while you can girl :0)"

jayker replied: "dont take it but i know it was widely requested in the prisons cos it gave the prisoners a buzz!!i was a prison nurse"

What do you know about mirtazapine? Been back to my gp today and have been put on another antidepressant mirtazapine. Does anybody have any dealings with this one? Side effects? My gp also told me off for not talking, thankfully the notes from my overdose from the weekend haven't reached him yet so it wasn't as awkward as it could have been. Does anybody know what this medication is like at all from personal experiance or otherwise. sorry I am posting this again, but it didn't post the first tim round until it was buried under too many other answers.

Mirtazapine / Antidepressants - Suddenly after 6 weeks I feel worse ! Advice? Hello I have been on Mirtazapine for 7 weeks now. 15mg the first week and then 30mg thereafter. This week I have been waking up with headaches, where they usually help you sleep, they haven't and my head feels so heavy and dizzy. Because of my head feeling so awful I have become anxious as I hate feeling this way. I feel a bit more normal in myself , but cannot cope with these effects. I'm not sure whether its me having anxiety or its the tablets? My brain hurts when I try and think ! Any experiences or advice would be appreciated. Thank You

Carlee replied: "you need to let the doctor know who prescribed this! antidepressants are not something to mess around with."

Hayleigh Kate replied: "My friend who is 19, recently was prescribed anti-depressants and at first taking them she experienced bad side-effects from them such as nausea and she could not stop shaking. She stopped taking them and got in touch with the doctor who prescribed her some new ones which are fine. I suggest calling the doctor to ask about the side-effects of your drugs and make an appointment over this. Good Luck xxx"

Michelle D replied: "Hey you, how's you been?. . . . . not been too great either! The doc upped my dose and i'm just saying to my mum if this is the how i'm going to feel then i'd rather be depressed. .. . . . Not the greatest of attitudes , but by god i don't feel myself either. So lathargic it's un-real, and sleep. . . . . .my goodness it's all i want to do! Even now my eye's are drooping. . . . but i'm giving them a chance just in case its just a starting error, but i feel like you too. Got the doc's on thursday and it's not my usual doctor. . . . .lol. .. . my doctor has alot of holiday's. Anyway babes i'll see what he has to say about this because it's not pleasant feeling so tired and unable to function as one should, in fact it's even more bloody depressing if i was to be honest, but then again it could be as i've been told a couple of months to kick in. I'll keep you up-dated and see if we can help each other combat this problem we share. . . . .ps . . . WARNING. .. . don't just stop taking them, if you feel like i do then i'm sure thats what you want to do. But i've been told it's not a good idea just to stop, weaning off them is better. You never know maybe it's just because we aint completely getting the result we hoped for. ... . . . A MIRACLE!! So keep strong and i'm your witness to the awful side affects. Chelle x x x"

I think I have become dependant on mirtazapine to sleep? I was put on mirtazapine at the end of July a few days after my trip to A&E with a large overdose. This is my second antidepressant, the first I had to stop cold turkey after I suddenly became allergic developing a rash 9 weeks into the course. At the time of going onto these tablets I was sleeping ok, but was straggling to get to sleep. I told my gp this, the reason I wasn't getting to sleep was that everytime I went to bed, I started crying violently, but was ok once I calmed down. With these tablets I am normally dead to the world within 1 hour (it was 20 minute when I first started them). I have missed a dose twice now. The first time was early into the course, when I was still dopey and out of it throughout the day. That time even though I was tired I couldn't sleep, it took me ages to get to sleep and when I was asleep I kept waking, and it took me ages to get back to sleep. The second time was Monday night. On Sunday night I had next to no sleep (I know the reason for this, it was my fault). On Monday I was working hard all day carrying heavy items whilst helping my sister to move house. I went out for a meal on Monday night to celebrate my best friends 21st and got drunk (hence why I forgot to take my tablet). So there were 3 factors which meant I should have been out like a log 1 - had little sleep night before 2 - busy physical day 3 - very drunk But it still took me forever to get to sleep despite being tired and exhausted. I woke up twice, and on both occassions it took around an hour to get back to sleep. As my sleep wasn't like this before I think I have become dependant on mirtazapine to sleep, which makes me worried about when it is time to come of it!

iaindude replied: "go back to the doctors adn ask to see wether or not to be taken off or the dose lowerd"

rickster1 replied: "I take 15mg of Matazipine to calm my anxiety, but also take citrapram as well, it did make me sleepy at first but now i am fine, although they just about keep me going!"

Mahadelic replied: "I'm a little confused about what you're asking here. I can tell you about mirtazapine though. It's a novel antidepressant, which is highly sedative, and is often prescribed for people with sleep/anxiety problems. It is unusual, in the way that at lower doses it is more sedative. This is due to it's pharmacological profile. As you increase the dose, it has more of an alerting affect, but is still relatively sedative. As I mentioned above, it is very helpful for sleep problems. I think you just have to weigh up whether you're better off taking it or not. It's an antidepressant, and therefore has to be taken for quite some time to be of any benefit to you. If it helps to improve your symptoms, I wouldn't worry too much about becoming dependant on it to help you sleep-if you feel this is a problem, then you can always taper yourself off the medication under your doctors supervision."

simon h replied: "Hello There have been no documented cases of dependence on mirtazapine (zispin) neither in clinical settings or trials. Mirtazapine is a unique antidepressant, but at the start of treatment it is very heavily sedating and it will literally knock you out but this affect will soon wear off. I feel you are perhaps confusing this tolerance to the sedation with your worries of addiction to the drug perhaps?? Even if a drug sedates you, it does not mean you will sleep well on it - i know this sound odd but in medicine its called akasthesia, its that restless - cant sit still feeling. If you are suffering from mental health problems, sleeping well is very important. If you feel that your medicine if affecting the quality of your sleep then you must see your doctor to discuss this and possible switch antidepressants."

Is there an antidepressant that is safe to take during pregnancy? I was trying to conceive but have been told to change my anti depressant by my doctor, I was on mirtazapine ive tried a new one dosulpin but its horrible and i cant take it I am going back to doctors soon but wish to know if there others out there that have taken anything and it has been safe to use while ttc or whilst pregnant

Some questions about Mirtazapine? My shrink has prescribed me some orodispersible Mirtazapine. I haven't started taking it yet; in fact I haven't even been able to pick up the prescription yet, so I have some questions about it in the meantime. Any help will be greatly appreciated (don't feel you have to answer all the bullet-points). The reason my doc prescribed me this is because I mentioned my insomnia and anxiety; he says that although Mirtazapine is an antidepressant, it will help in both these areas. What I'm wondering is: - What can you tell me about Mirtazapine? - Have you taken it and what was/is your experience of it like? - Will I be able to continue taking any of these herbal medicines that I'm currently taking: Ginkgo biloba/Milk thistle/St. John's Wort/Valerian root/5-HTP?

Your Assistant replied: "In my opinion if you are going to take mirtzapene (remeron) then you need to get off the herbal stuff. Remeron acts the opposite of many drugs. A small amount may make you tired and a larger amount may make you feel less depressed. You may just need a small amount for anxiety and a large amount for depression. It works differently for different people. Most people take it before bedtime and always remember with psych meds (this is what I do) that herbal remedies can intefere with these types of drugs and most herbal remedies have limited positive qualities, not much more than eating correctly and getting enough sleep and living a stress free life and exercising. I hope you the best. This is a well known and well researched medicine and I for one say it would be fine to take but not with the herbal stuff and dont drink alcohol to excess or at all either. Antidepressants , Side effects on Mirtazapine or is it the depression? Hello I have been put on mirtazapine for depression 15mg 1 week and 35mg thereafter. I have been on them for 4 weeks and take them before bed to help me sleep. I still have the lightheadedness / dizziness, and my eyes & head seem really heavy all day. I find it hard to concentrate. My digestion is bad although that could be my change of eating habits. Perhaps I thought that the tablets were a miracle cure and would make me feel better quickly! How do the tablets work, do they make you feel spaced out and not able to think? Any shared experiences would help. Thank You

hyperspud182 replied: "When i started on these i felt REALLY spaced out to begin with, like being stoned but after a few weeks (and increase of dose) it all disappeared and they are working, some side effects disappear but if they dont its worth talking to the Dr."

Michelle replied: "HI, SNAP!!. . . . .I'm just done answering ( well advising as best to my trance like ability ) someone's Q on having no motivation to work etc. and closed my message with my GP's advice and medicaion given to myself. I to have been prescibed the exact same dose of mirtazapine , my dose was supposed to double starting this coming Friday, but like yourself have the exact same side effect's, and it was imsomnia and poor diet in which i was placed on this anti-depressant. I've been waking up not knowing what day it is and lethargic and very heavy eye's. I explained this to my doctor and he's urged I give them time to take effect, not sure how long we're talking about here , but it's a no go if this limbo trance state doesn't improve. But , my Mum who's a practice manager queried her best friend who's a GP about my concern's and her advice was that she has a great success rate with her patient's whom she's prescibed mirtazapine and to give them at least 3 month's before deciding to quit. I was also adviced to take them at tea time and not initially before bedtime, meaning less drowsyness the following day. Keep forgetting to do this so i can't quote you on this advice, but it's been a blessing knowing it's not me that's been imagining this. I hope having shared my experiences , which are almost identical. . . lol. . . I've started using post it's as my mind doesn't seem to be absorbing any imput, so this enables anything important is not blanked or forgotten. I'll keep you posted on any other developments or info. . .he he. . . Keep strong and the best of luck ! Chelle x x x"

Guido Fawkes replied: "All the tablets do is make you unable to think and feel, covering all your problems up so you don't care about anything any more (including your depression) or anyone. Like a chemical lobotomy. They don't make you happy. They put more problems there which weren't there before when you withdraw from them till the withdrawal symptoms have eased. Even doctors don't know exactly how they "work". Don't believe the theory which a lot of people speak of as though it is a fact that depression is a chemical imbalance that the tablets sort out. I believe the tablets cause a chemical imbalance that wasn't there before"

me replied: "I was on this drug for depression and because i had real sleep problems. I suspect also because the depressio had killed my apetite and my weight was quite underweight. This drug makes you eat!!! Eat eat eat eat and eat like crazy. It made me feel like i was always hungry and nothing filled me up. it helped well with my insomnia. i started in 15mg and went up to 30mg and then 45mg. I stopped taking it cos i couldnt stand the weight gain. Wishing you well x"
