I have been on Neurontin for peripheral neuropathy for years? but just recently the Dr added Lyrica and is tapering off the Neurontin . He is doing this because of the increase in nerve pain in feet and hands and Neurontin is obviously not working,,,Does anyone know if this medication actually helps and what are the side effects ??

Neuropathy and Neurontin? I have neuropathy in my leg that I take neurontin for. I was off of the med for about five days and my neuropathy has flared big time. Now that I am back on the med, how long should it take to relieve the nerve pain?

Have peripheral Neuropathy. Doctor gave me Neurontin for it. Has anyone used this for this? Are there any side effects, should I take something more with it or even bother taking this? Overall I don't think my symptoms are unbearable. My feet burning are the wrost part and my muscles are sore but is taking this medicine worth fixing those? Just wanted to know your experience with either the neuropathy or the medicine.

Neurontin for peripheral neuropathy, injury related.? Medication prescribed for nerve pain. What can I expect. Doctor said damage is permanent but this drug might help with numbness?

Neuropathy in feet and hands? Neurontin? I am 61 and all of a sudden, I started having numbness in my right big toe. Then to my right foot, then also left foot, and now even my legs tend to vibrate. Went to neurologist. MRI of back came out negative. Has now put me on neurontin 300 mgs 3 times a day. Has anyone taken this and has it helped. I don't know where this neuropathy came from. Right out of the blue and got bad fast. My doctor hasn't tested me for MS yet probably because of my age. I'm scared to death that I'm going to be paralyzed or something. I feel the tingling all the time in my feet. In the beginning it didn't bother me when I laid down but now it does. Any suggestions or hope. Thanks. P.S. even since this started, I have been having chills - no one seems to make any connection between the chills and neuropathy. Also started having bladder problems at same time. Am so confused. I took a Neurontin and next day my hands seemed to be kind of numb too. Scares me as I thought it was isolated to my feet and legs. Eye got blurry. And that is only after one pill. Did you have symptoms like that that eventually went away.

I had cancer 4 yrs ago..Does anyone know how long neuropathy lasts?? Taking neurontin , anything else?? I had both chemo and radiation for cancer in lymph nodes in my neck....I am a martial arts instructor and am feelling much stronger now, but the tingeling in my hands and feet are a real drag!!!!!!! especially because we train and teach barefoot.. Yvette C replied: "Ask your doctor about Lyrica. Neurotin only put me to sleep and did not help me, but after 2 weeks on Lyrica I was truely impressed. Lyrica is considered the precursor to neurotin. It has less aggrivating side effects and many people, besides myself have found it works a lot better. Chemo caused nerve damage. This will not change or heal, so you need to find a med that will work for you. Good Luck."

John replied: "Sorry to hear about the neuropathy but glad that it is 4 years down the track since your treatment. Oddly enough, I went to see my oncologist today for a follow up 7-months since completing my treatment for cancer. I too have very severe neuropathy as a result of the chemo treatment which was concluded some 12-months ago now. Have been to see a neurologist and the oncologist indicated that I may have some cerebral as well as peripheral nerve damage which may take 3-4 years to improve but probably will not go away altogether at all. Our neighbour had a similar experience and is still effected by numb tingly feet and his last lot of chemo was some 20 years ago! I'm afraid that all you can do is learn to manage it as best you can and perhaps go an see a neurologist, but I expect that there is little that can be done and you are likely to have some form of residual neuropathy."

Debi replied: "I was in a car accident in 2003 resulting in neuropathy of the legs. I had tried neurotin, the 1st pill made me feel like I was somewhere else and could not function. The Dr. recently put me on Lyrica.......I finally have relieve. It does not take long for the medicine to give me relieve. Has for how long the neuropathy will last, I was under the impression you will always have this. If someone knows differently, it would be great to know. I wish you all the best!! Debi"

How does Neurontin work on the nerves to stop pain? I have a herniaed disk in my lower spine and was prescriped neurontin 300 mg to take only at night. A friend has neuropathy caused by diabiets and he was prescribed 300 mg neurontin to take 3 times a day. He was told by his care provider that the neurontin burned out the nerve endings to stop the pain. What we really want to know is, How does Neurontin actually work on the nerves? Does it destroy the nerve endings?

Does anyone have neuropathy in their arm? They just did a CT and said the pain is not from previous cancer in my neck.

How to treat non-diabetic peripheral neuropathy in my feet? I have peripheral neuropathy ( numbness) in my feet. I am not a diabetic. I have had this now for 1 1/2 years. The 2 neuroligist I've been to do not know the cause. I've taken Neurontin and it really has been no help. Does anyony know of any kind of treatment program which might include some therapy like electronic stimulation and maybe a more effective drug. I am desperate. This is ruining my life.

huggywell replied: "There is generally no treatment when damage has occured, the only thing that might be possible is to prevent further damage and deterioration;"

Lewis A replied: "cut them off and get new ones"

laura replied: "pn is caused by nerve damage. as you probably know, nerves are one type of cell in our body that do not regenerate (usually), and the ones that do, do so very slowly. unfortunately there is no easy answer, no miracle treatment or drug. Neurontin would not help you because it is for nerve pain. Obviously since you are numb there is no pain. I am not sure what else there is to tell you, except you should research doctors in your area that are renowned for their work in the field, and go to him/her for another opinion. Something caused this, and that is something they need to figure out. There are a number of things that may cause this problem, and if they can figure out what it is, then you are one step closer to finding effective treatment."

the_only_solorose replied: "see an endocrinologist, there are new drugs available now for perpipheral neuropathies."

Crazy Diamond replied: "Just because you do not fit in the normal boundaries of diabetes does not mean you don't have it even type2 diabetes which is sometimes controlled by diet can still cause the underlying problems as full blown type1. Damage cannot be repaired but slowed down by a diet change."

drsuria_cbe replied: "You should undergo Basic investigations, Nerve biopsy, Other investigations, and Nerve conduction studies depending on the cause. We are not aware whether you are having monocuropathy, Multiple curopathy or polyneuropathy. the cause should be diagnosed. The management is according to the cause ; General ,Local measures and Specific. Consult a Neuro physician."

Sankara Sastri C replied: "try a good general physician who can thoroughly investigate you and get at the root of your numbness of the feet--poor nutrirtional status is usually the cause for these sort of troubles"

Samm replied: "If I were in your position I would try the cream with capsasin in it. It is made with pepper and the heat might just help to stimulate the nerve system in the area you use it on. I do know it gets HOT. I would try anything to try to help improve the problem."

Eve replied: "Well I think you have nothing to lose by looking into acupuncture too. I've never had it but some who have tried it swear it helps stimulate their nerves in positive ways. I'm sure that physiotherapy might help too."

FADEEL A replied: "tofranil 10 mg at night +dolostop cap."

DENISE replied: "The wound care center has a chamber that help the blood flow and you don't haft to be a diabetic to have this problem. the chamber is a pressure treatment that coses you to have better feelings in your feet. might want to ask about it. hope this helps"

dangerous replied: "Try inositol (one of the B vitamins). I take 1 teaspoon of powder daily for neuropathy. Not only is it helping to stop the neuropathy, it is also helping to repair the existing damage."

Sara I replied: "You might want to check out for diabetic supplies"

mpact replied: "there are several drugs, e.g carbamazepin (tegretol) Methylcobalamin,"
