Is Nizoral shampoo useful for male hair loss (MPB), has anyone used it for that purpose and had any results? I read somewhere that Nizoral shampoo (Ketoconazole) is useful for men experiencing hair loss, is this true?, I mean has anyone actually used it and saw any benefits from it.

Does Nizoral help with hair loss? I am 26yrs. old and am looking for some kind of relief from this great thing we call MPB. My uncle who is a doc suggested I use this shampoo once a week. Any thoughts. What is it known to help with. Slowing down hair loss? Growing new hair?? Whats the success rate? Any side effects? I would also like to add that I do not have dandruff.

What steps to reduce/ prevent future hair loss? ? I have a 22 year old brother who has already experienced some hairloss (when he was 19). My dad has pretty good head of hair. Once someone said my hairline was receding, but almost everyone else says I have really thick hair. I am only 17. I am using Nizoral. What kind of steps can I take to slow or prevent future hair loss?

Henry F replied: "Hi Thomas, Protein rich foods can help to prevent hair loss Protein-rich foods can aid in maintaining a healthy body. They are also known to strengthen hair and nails. Eating foods that contain healthy proteins such as lean meat, poultry and fish can prevent hair loss. Vegetarians could also have a protein-rich diet by considering eggs beans and nuts. Although the food that you eat can not assure you of a permanent treatment for your hair loss problem, these foods could at least help slow down the process of hair loss."

S R replied: "Food rich in vitamin A, B, C, E, K, magnesium and zinc are important for healthy hair and also prevents hair loss. Hair is made up mostly of protein so a protein rich food is also recommended. Check out for more info."

does this make you loss hair? Nizoral Nizoral is an anti-fungal shampoo that kills the fungi that cause seborrhea and dandruff. Groups of individuals have discovered that Nizoral (when used regularly) is a very useful alopecia treatment, once again it would appear that the role of a substance for the treatment of hair-loss is stumbled upon accidentally! Nizoral contains a chemical called ketoconazole, it is known that when ketoconazole is ingested orally that it inhibits the binding of androgens to receptors in the body and this would include the binding of DHT to hair-follicle receptors. However the use of oral ketoconazole is NOT recommended for many reasons, mainly because this method would present itself as a toxin and ultimately damage the liver. But topical ketoconazole (as contained in Nizoral shampoo) shows itself to have a "weak" anti-DHT binding affect in the scalp. Furthermore positive results with Nizoral shampoo are often noted within a few weeks, whereas a pure anti-DHT affect may take a few months. It is therefore likely that Nizoral exhibits another method to its anti-hair-loss effect. One such theory of Nizorals anti-alopecia effects may be on its activity upon sebum. Sebum is a fatty substance that accumulates in the scalp around the hair follicles. Its possible that the removal of sebum may help "unclog" the hair follicle and expose it to more nutrition from an improved blood supply, rather like unclogging a drain! It is known that Nizoral can remove and reduce sebum deposits man im scared to used this stuff, i got some weird fungi like stuff around my neck and its nasty and dry and the doctor prescribed me this and ketoconazole cream, and im scared to use the sh*t because it makes your hair fall out!! im only 18 i aint going bald over some dumb sh*t!

What type of dandruff is causing my hair loss? I'm african american female with relaxed hair I've been using no lye relaxers. I have very itchy scalp and dandruff that seems to be causing hair loss. My hair comes out from the root, and I see a white bulb at the root of the hair. I've tried the following products: Nizoral, Neutrogena T Gel, Selsum Blue, Head and Shoulders, tea tree oil, olive oil, several scalp oils and creams, hot oil treatments, and it just makes the dandruff even worse. I wash my hair once a week, condition it and use very little heat and when I do use heat I use thermal protection. What could I do to get my scalp healthy?

jade replied: "2 year ago I was having this problem I know that your having a allergic reaction to SLS this is a harsh detergent that they use in every commercial shampoo. I suggest to try a organic shampoo that doesn't have this cheap chemical .I recommend to use desert essence fragrance free shampoo is about $ 7 buck at vitamin shoppe stores, it was the only thing that really help me is a organic shampoo that cleans & stop my dandruff problem .I have 1 year using it & my dandruff has never appear now my hair feels more healthy also very shiny but if you don't get better using this shampoo for one month you really need to go to a dermatologist so you can get a professional answer. desertessence.com vitaminshoppe.com store"

Hair loss of my 2 year-9month old son. What maybe the reason? My son is healthy and no known illness or problem. For last 3 months maybe it seems like he has less hair near his forehead. We noticed it 2 weeks ago and were watching his pillow. 2 weeks ago we found about 150-160 hair on the pillow. Then we used 1% Nizoral shampoo on his head for 3 times a week for 2 weeks. We were seeing less hair on pillow but today he was itching his head and later I just crossed my fingers inside his head and found about 200-250 hairs came out. The hair is not coming out from a specific location but all over head. But hair is not falling from eyebrows or eyelashes. When I search on internet I only found main reason as fungal infection. Can there be other serious reason so that I need to take my son urgently to the doctor? He has a routine checkup on mid-April. Can someone experience suggest any reasons for the sudden hair-loss?

Katie replied: "I would absolutely take him to the doctor ASAP. It could be anything from the shampoo to something serious that only test can show. You want to rule everything out, but i have never heard of a child that young loosing that much hair."

Tahia replied: "It may be Telogen Effluvium. Cause maybe stress, deficiency of iron, excess vitamin A or inadequate protein intake. Usually it takes 6 months to recover by itself. Collections totaling 100 hairs or more in a given 24-hour period are indicative of ongoing telogen effluvium. If the collections are performed over several weeks while the telogen effluvium is resolving, the number of hairs collected each time should decrease."

NaturalKure replied: "for kids, hair loss can be due to eczema or cradle cap or any infection. I read that on a health site wher I get eczema product for my daughter. they have a hairgrowth product they say is for kids- you can read and see"

Is it okay to use other shampoos with 1% ketoconazole Nizoral? I have seborrhea on my scalp causing redness, flaking, scaling, and hair loss. i know that ketoconazole is potent, but is it a bad idea to use other products (ie: Lush products that are natural/organic) on days when i don't use the Nizoral?

Blackcat replied: "It should be fine if you use one with no perfumed and none coloured, as it will irritate it,i had this once but Nizoral didn't work for me, and i needed tablets off the doctor,so if after following the instructions and it doesn't clear it means its deeper in the scalp, and will only go with tablets.Good luck."
