Rockford replied: "Yes, it can. It's a rare side effect listed on the prescribing information. It's not normal muscle pain either. There is a special name for it, Myositis. I think can progress to muscle weakness. Tell your doctor."
Dr. Albert, DDS replied: "YES,SEE:
Lipitor, a statin drug widely used to lower cholesterol, has been implicated in a number of cases involving muscle pain and muscle tissue degeneration. Understanding the effect that Lipitor has on the body may provide answers for those concerned about the side effects associated with this medication. It may also lead the way to alternative cholesterol treatments.
The active ingredient in Lipitor is atorvastatin, a drug that inhibits the production of an enzyme that the body uses to make cholesterol. The intention is good, but there are problems inherent in reducing the production of cholesterol in the body. Cholesterol plays a vital role for every cell in the body. Without enough of it, the body cannot repair and replace cell membranes, and they will degenerate and die.
Muscle tissue, like every other kind of tissue, needs a certain amount of cholesterol in order to stay healthy and function properly. The use of Lipitor may actually restrict cholesterol too much, causing muscle aches and pain due to tissue degeneration. Much about the full effect of statin drugs on the body remains unknown; however, it is clear that they should be used with caution, and only when other avenues have been exhausted.
Unicity International, a leader in the field of nutrition, believes that a better solution to the problem of high cholesterol is a natural one. They offer an all-natural product proven to lower cholesterol without harmful side effects. Bios Life 2 is a liquid fiber supplement that removes excess cholesterol without interfering with the body's cholesterol producing mechanisms. The addition of antioxidant vitamins C and E, and a highly absorbable form of chromium, makes this formula the most complete natural cholesterol-lowering supplement on the market today."

Pain in upper leg due to taking niacin? My 31 year old son in law has been experiencing upper leg pain. He has been put on niacin for high triglycerides. Has anyone experienced this muscle/bone ache with taking niacin? My husband was on Lipitor and he suddenly experienced leg pain. Come to find out it was the Lipitor that was causing it. He is now on Crestor and has no pain. Please be aware of this very little advertised side affect of satin drugs, particularly in older adults. Can niacin do the same thing?
is the drug lipitor given to patients to treat anything else besides high cholesterol? my neighbor was given lipitor after some kind of treatment on her arteries. She says the doctor says it is to keep down her pain in her legs and to help regulate her heart. Recently she was taken off this medication with no replacements and is now experiencing leg cramps at night. To my knowledge lipitor is for high cholesteral and not heart conditions.... it helps to keep the arteries clear.... am i mistaken?
knicname replied: "It is also used for high triglycerides.
It is used to help prevent arterial clogging & therefore would help flow of blood in arteries...helps prevent heart attacks & strokes.
Google: mayo clinic>>drugs>>Lipitor"
I'm on Lipitor and haven't had a problem until now. ? Monday during the graveyard shift at work I was sitting in my chair and notice the left side of my leg twitching. I though it would twitch and then stop, but it was still twitching when I left work Tuesday morning. I went home and was in bed watching TV and still my leg was twitching until I fell asleep. I woke up around 8:00 p.m. and was surprise to see that my leg was still twitching. It's didn't hurt but was very irritating and begin to get on my nerves. I didn't have to work that day so around 5:30 a.m. I went to bed and woke up around 7:30 a.m. to take my Lipitor and still my leg was twitching on the left side right above the knees. After taking my medication and going back to sleep I woke up around 10:00 a.m. and my leg had stopped twitching, but now it feels really weird. I can't really describe what it is, but it's almost a numbness strange feeling, but it dosn't hurt or bother me it just irritating. I was wondering if this has anything to do with the Lipitor I'm taking and is this a side affect from it. My doctor said to report any muscle pain or numbness, but again my leg isn't numb. I mean wouldn't numbness mean (Unable to move the leg or lift it?) I've done some research online about lipitor and I'm sure that this is the cause of my leg problems. I plan on making an appointment with my doctor tomorrow to come in and see her on Tuesday to discuss this problem, but before I go in has anyone ever had a problem with this drug? Is this one of the side effect or is this all in my head due to the twitching that I experence 24 hours ago. I mean I'd hate to go to my doctor and make a fool of myself over something that's not really that bad.
AbeLincolnParty replied: "muscle pain or tenderness, especially if accompanied by fever is a sign of rhabdomyolysis, I do not see anything about twitches as a symptom. There are drug interactions that increase the risk of this side effect, see the FDA label information (found at the website):
This link also lists under the title 'CNS Toxicity' where a spasm was noticed in a dog given the drug. This issue seems fuzzy, I am not a doctor, but it seems it would be difficult to evaluate in early stages if that was a problem.
On CBS news they ran a story a year or so ago that these STATINS types of drugs in some people gave dementia type side effects, ruining memory, which returned when the drug was stopped. That make since as much of the dry weight of the brain is derived from fat chemistry (lipids).
But maybe you would be having these twitches even without the drug. But if it gets worse...."
