Pains In Legs From Lipitor Information in Questions
Has anyone experienced lower leg discoloration, edema, and lower leg pain from taking Lipitor? My fiance was on Lipitor for a few months and developed the above problems while taking the drug so he stopped. It has been over a year since, and the brown color is still covering his shins, he still has swelling (this is similar to the water retention women get while pregnant - you can push on a spot and it stays indented), and today he told me that the pain is becoming intolerable. The doctor that prescribed the Lipitor in the first place dismissed and still dismisses my fiance's complaints, but there is no other doctor in our small town or the surrounding towns that he can go to (insurance). I am just curious to see if anyone had heard of these problems and what was done to try to resolve them. He did contact his doctor about the pain and discoloration, but they just dimissed his claims. The side effects are still there and he hasn't taken a pill in about a year, and the doctor doesn't seem to care that he is still experiencing these symptoms.

absublutely replied: "I have been taking Lipitor for 8 years and I have never had these types of issues. I would suspect that if he stopped taking the Lipitor and the problem did not go away then it's most likely something else. Since this sounds serious, I would call the insurance company and tell them that they have an obligation to help you get medical help elsewhere since you're uncomfortable with the first doctor. Also, it wouldn't be a bad idea to consult a different doctor on your own dime to make sure that there isn't something more serious going on... Just my opinion..."

alm_lpn replied: "It says in the commercials to let you doctor know if you have any muscle pain. Lipitor can cause liver damage, among other things, so it's best he sees his doctor right away."

How safe is Zetia and Lipitor (Dr. recommended) when taken at the same time? This was prescribed to control cholesterol levels. A loss of equilibrium has been experienced, plus leg pains. The doctor insists that I stay on the meds.

Lexy replied: "All you can do is call your docs office, tell the nurse that you're dizzy, having leg cramps and are wondering if you can take the two drugs at the same time. Let your doc tell you what to do."

DNA replied: "Leg pains are a side effect. I would not take any cholesterol meds unless your levels are extremely high. There's just too high of a risk for side effects with the liver and with the muscles. I had a doctor tell me I should go on them to get my LDL below 100. It was 124 which in the lab range was normal. I dumped this doctor quickly. I had a total cholesterol of 226. When my underactive thyroid got diagnosed I got this down to 201 and most recently with diet I got it down to 167. There was no way I was going o meds when all my levels are now within normal range. For my diet, I add walnuts or almonds to my whole grain cereal each morning. I use olive oil more. Before dinner I take raw apple cider vinegar in a glass of ice tea and I take a fiber supplement at lunch time. Some supplements lke niacin or B vitamins can lower cholesterol levels but I think I'd try diet and exercise first."

anyone have experiences on side effects of statin use for cholestorol? my dad has stopped using lipitor, but has leg pain now. i take simvastatin, but my test levels show good, considering stopping medication.

murrayc replied: "leg pain is definitely a side affect of Lipitor also being tired. his DR might have him try another statin like Crestor"

Has anyone ever had a reaction to lipitor or crestor? what was the reaction and what did you do about it? I was given Lipitor and I got leg cramps and stomach pains and the Doctor stopped the Lipitor immediately and changed to Crestor. Again within 2 weeks, leg cramps/ stomach pains/ trouble walking and went to the hospital. I spent 5 weeks in the hospital because my Kidneys stopped working / my skin turned brown/ i paralysed from the waist down. With hard work and many medications my kidneys are functioning again and I can walk with a walker. The muscles in my legs and arms have broken down and they need to be rebuilt. Has anyone ever gone threw this? What did you do?

Mikey replied: "Are you out of your Mind, of course not."

have been asked what side effects I experienced whilst taking Lipitor.? The side effects are aching legs and joints and tender muscles. Also lower back pain (which was there intermittently earler but much worse with Lipitor), itchy skin all over. I now feel fantastic since being off that terrible drug for approx 1 week.

Does Lipitor cause muscle pain? I have been on Lipitor for about 2 years. About 2 months ago I developed muscle pain, worse in my legs in my legs but also in my trunk. I was taking the tablets at bedtime and the pain arrived about half an hour later, enough to keep me awake or to wake me up if i had got to sleep. I started taking neurofen and codeine at bedtime just to get off to sleep, but was woken with pain after about 3 hours. Then two weeks ago I stopped taking the Lipitor and the problem disappeared. Is this a familiar story to anyone else? I am wondering whether to stay off them altogether or to start taking half doses.

Cold Bird replied: "Yes, muscle pain is one side effect of Lipitor. Maybe you could discuss the options to it with your doctor?"

Rockford replied: "Yes, it can. It's a rare side effect listed on the prescribing information. It's not normal muscle pain either. There is a special name for it, Myositis. I think can progress to muscle weakness. Tell your doctor."

Dr. Albert, DDS replied: "YES,SEE: Lipitor, a statin drug widely used to lower cholesterol, has been implicated in a number of cases involving muscle pain and muscle tissue degeneration. Understanding the effect that Lipitor has on the body may provide answers for those concerned about the side effects associated with this medication. It may also lead the way to alternative cholesterol treatments. The active ingredient in Lipitor is atorvastatin, a drug that inhibits the production of an enzyme that the body uses to make cholesterol. The intention is good, but there are problems inherent in reducing the production of cholesterol in the body. Cholesterol plays a vital role for every cell in the body. Without enough of it, the body cannot repair and replace cell membranes, and they will degenerate and die. Muscle tissue, like every other kind of tissue, needs a certain amount of cholesterol in order to stay healthy and function properly. The use of Lipitor may actually restrict cholesterol too much, causing muscle aches and pain due to tissue degeneration. Much about the full effect of statin drugs on the body remains unknown; however, it is clear that they should be used with caution, and only when other avenues have been exhausted. Unicity International, a leader in the field of nutrition, believes that a better solution to the problem of high cholesterol is a natural one. They offer an all-natural product proven to lower cholesterol without harmful side effects. Bios Life 2 is a liquid fiber supplement that removes excess cholesterol without interfering with the body's cholesterol producing mechanisms. The addition of antioxidant vitamins C and E, and a highly absorbable form of chromium, makes this formula the most complete natural cholesterol-lowering supplement on the market today."

gamal_solimann replied: "yes,,that is why u should go for cpk_test.if 40 higher than normal..u should stop the drug cpk,,phosphokinase enzyme of the muscle"

Pain in upper leg due to taking niacin? My 31 year old son in law has been experiencing upper leg pain. He has been put on niacin for high triglycerides. Has anyone experienced this muscle/bone ache with taking niacin? My husband was on Lipitor and he suddenly experienced leg pain. Come to find out it was the Lipitor that was causing it. He is now on Crestor and has no pain. Please be aware of this very little advertised side affect of satin drugs, particularly in older adults. Can niacin do the same thing?

is the drug lipitor given to patients to treat anything else besides high cholesterol? my neighbor was given lipitor after some kind of treatment on her arteries. She says the doctor says it is to keep down her pain in her legs and to help regulate her heart. Recently she was taken off this medication with no replacements and is now experiencing leg cramps at night. To my knowledge lipitor is for high cholesteral and not heart conditions.... it helps to keep the arteries clear.... am i mistaken?

knicname replied: "It is also used for high triglycerides. It is used to help prevent arterial clogging & therefore would help flow of blood in arteries...helps prevent heart attacks & strokes. Google: mayo clinic>>drugs>>Lipitor"

I'm on Lipitor and haven't had a problem until now. ? Monday during the graveyard shift at work I was sitting in my chair and notice the left side of my leg twitching. I though it would twitch and then stop, but it was still twitching when I left work Tuesday morning. I went home and was in bed watching TV and still my leg was twitching until I fell asleep. I woke up around 8:00 p.m. and was surprise to see that my leg was still twitching. It's didn't hurt but was very irritating and begin to get on my nerves. I didn't have to work that day so around 5:30 a.m. I went to bed and woke up around 7:30 a.m. to take my Lipitor and still my leg was twitching on the left side right above the knees. After taking my medication and going back to sleep I woke up around 10:00 a.m. and my leg had stopped twitching, but now it feels really weird. I can't really describe what it is, but it's almost a numbness strange feeling, but it dosn't hurt or bother me it just irritating. I was wondering if this has anything to do with the Lipitor I'm taking and is this a side affect from it. My doctor said to report any muscle pain or numbness, but again my leg isn't numb. I mean wouldn't numbness mean (Unable to move the leg or lift it?) I've done some research online about lipitor and I'm sure that this is the cause of my leg problems. I plan on making an appointment with my doctor tomorrow to come in and see her on Tuesday to discuss this problem, but before I go in has anyone ever had a problem with this drug? Is this one of the side effect or is this all in my head due to the twitching that I experence 24 hours ago. I mean I'd hate to go to my doctor and make a fool of myself over something that's not really that bad.

AbeLincolnParty replied: "muscle pain or tenderness, especially if accompanied by fever is a sign of rhabdomyolysis, I do not see anything about twitches as a symptom. There are drug interactions that increase the risk of this side effect, see the FDA label information (found at the website): This link also lists under the title 'CNS Toxicity' where a spasm was noticed in a dog given the drug. This issue seems fuzzy, I am not a doctor, but it seems it would be difficult to evaluate in early stages if that was a problem. On CBS news they ran a story a year or so ago that these STATINS types of drugs in some people gave dementia type side effects, ruining memory, which returned when the drug was stopped. That make since as much of the dry weight of the brain is derived from fat chemistry (lipids). But maybe you would be having these twitches even without the drug. But if it gets worse...."
