Paxil Sick Feel in Q&A
Anyone feel sick the first time they took Paxil? Ive just taken my first paxil earlier this evening and im at work and I feel sick like im going to throw up. Ive been having panic attacks for like 10 months now. I had a couple of panic attacks tonight also cause of the feeling sick thing i think.

m.n.m replied: "Maybe ur taking too much. i've never tried to take paxil. What I do is try to treat myself mentally. Why are you depressed/stressed?? I'd suggest going off the tablets or seeing a doctor."

fugio replied: "I had to take it years ago & and made me real sick & had no libido had to get off it."

The Instigator replied: "I can't remember for sure, but I think paxil did absolutely nothing to me. If I took zoloft without food, I would throw up water in about 15 minutes. In regards to anxiety - have you tried cleaning up your diet and getting a whole bunch of exercise? Fish oil pills are smart, also. You may be eating a food that upsets your digestion, and that constantly sends signals to your brain that you are upset or afraid. Kinda like when you eat a pepperoni pizza, wash it down with a couple cokes, and go to bed, and have a nightmare. Another possibility is that some vitamin or nutrient is deficient in your body. Deficient, or in surplus. Either is bad. This can both cause anxiety and be caused by it, as anxiety will affect digestion and allow poor absorption (and also encourage poor dietary choices) Not having the right gut bacteria strains populating your digestive tract can be a part of this. It's a complex interacting web of factors. Email me if you want to discuss diet."

Paramedic girl replied: "Paxil can make you feel nauseated for the first 4 to 6 weeks, then it usually subsides. Talk to your doctor about it as the milligrams may be too high for you to start out with. Also know that Paxil takes a while to help with panic attacks/depression. It needs to build up in your system before you start noticing a difference. Your prescribing doctor should be monitoring you for the next while and may need to make adjustments to the milligrams. So talk to him or her."

Unitsi replied: "Paxil can cause that feeling. Most docs would tell ya give it 3-7 days to pass. (but if u vomit or have bad headaches stop right away and call doc!) I know the feeling, being sick and off balanced, makes ya bit paranoid and makes you feel panicked...I would always have more panic attacks bc of fear of having another panic attack...If you can hold it out 3-7 more days..and it still does it..tell your doc...everyone is different..but I had attacks so bad, that at one point I literally stayed in my room (except for potty) for 47 days (was younger then)...my doctor gave me a beta blocker (inderal or enderal, something like that) anyway..it slows ya down a bit, without all the damn medical anti this or that crap..lol..my mother also takes it now for migraines and panic attacks...she hasnt had either now in 15 years...my p.attacks stopped within 1 week....after college I stopped the pill, because for me the had to give a high dose..and I was like a zombie tired sometimes..but it saved me from dropping out and giving up.... I hope your tummy feels better, and you P.A. subside... peace&blessings, Rue"

Mr. M. replied: "I can't believe Drs. are still prescribing "Paxil" , every one Ive known who has taken it complained of nasty side effects . My wife tried it for panic attacks it made her very nauseous among other things, She was switched to "Welbuteran" worked great with NO bad side effects , Good Luck"

Wintergirl replied: "Yes, Paxil made me naseus for about a week or two, then it went away. Since you're sensitive to it, I suggest taking it with food. I take mine at night because it can make me a little sleepy. You should begin to notice the panic feeling going away within a couple weeks, maybe less. I got relief in one week. They say "4 to 6 weeks" just in case it takes that long, but it usually doesn't. Paxil does have the side effect of diminishing your sex drive, but other than that it's the best anti depressant I've ever been on because it works, and I've been on quite a few."

How did you feel when weaning off Paxil? I have been gradually decreasing my dose. Yesterday I did not take any Paxil and today I feel very dizzy, nauseated, have had a headache and no appetite...Is this normal? Did this happen to anyone else? I have been feeling fine thus far so its a little scarey to suddenly feel so sick....

asailor77 replied: "I hope you are weaning off with a doctor's advice. But I take paxil and when I forget to take it the same things happen to me. I have had several docs and psychologists tell me that dizziness and flu-like symptoms are normal side efeects of it moving out of your system. Don't fret, but pay attention and keep on with a doctor as well."

nunciata22 replied: "I had all of the above, plus numbness and tingling on my hands and feet....it sucked coming off of Paxil."

Why does serotonin make you feel sick? why does serotonin inhibitors like paxil, effexor and antidepressants make you feel lightly nausated and sleep? sleepy^

paxil making me feel crappy? for alittle over a month i was takin 10mg paxil then today i started 20mg my hands were shakin and numb and my heat and blood presure was very high i just happen to be at the docotrs when i took my new pill and they said keep takin it this will pass. but all day today i have felt sick and tired and on the 10 mg i didnt feel this way they are going to keep uping my doage every month. anyone feel this way also let me know please i get really parionoid about drugs thats probaly alot of my problem.thanks

versantly replied: "call your doctor and explain the side effects."

Brandon M replied: "My pills did the same thing; they also kept me up at night and gave me tooth pains. I quit taking them and it all stopped. My doctor gave me Effexor afterwards, maybe you should try that instead."

the crusader replied: "Paxil can have some pretty intense side effects. Your doctor is right, though, about the feelings passing. I'd say give it another day or two and you'll be fine. Do not stop taking it because then the nasty effects that you're feeling now will be 10 times worse."

kc_6201 replied: "Yeah, you usually will get some side effects when taking a new drug. But talk to your doctor anyways. I have been on many different medications since I was around 12 and some of them I have had very severe reactions to. Most likely what you're describing will pass since they don't sound that severe. If you decide to try a different antidepressant (if that's why you're using it, I know it is also used for anxiety), I recommend Wellbutrin. It doesn't have the sexual side effects like Paxil does. Good luck and just remember to keep an open line of communication with your doctor."

Why does anti-anxiety and anti-depressants makes me feel so sick when I take them? I have panic attacks and depression my new doctor gave me a script of Buspar and Celexa very low dosages. I've been taking them for 2 days now. Last night I had the worst sleep. I've been having headaches, and minor throat and chest pains. I feel like I'm not here. Any advice? Thanks I've also been on Zoloft and Xanex and Paxil which gave me worst reactions.

theroadwetake replied: "Maybe its cause your parents are just telling your doctor you need them and youre really fine. Happens alot."

kittysoma25 replied: "Give the new meds about 2 months to get into your system. Hopefully, after your body gets use to them the negative side effects will disappear and the meds will work for you. If the side effects are too unbearable, I would go back to see the doctor. I had this problem with almost every anti-depressant that I was given. It is really hard to find one that works without unbearable side effects. Have you been put on Lexapro yet? That one really seemed to work for me and for everyone else that I know who has been on it without all the side effects."

dreaming_angel1983 replied: "It will take your body a few weeks to adjust to them. Keep taking them and the side affects should go away."

bj replied: "My last trip to the doctor I said well these antidepressants, some people take them and feel worse. He agreed with me....I don't think the doctors really know if you are going to be helped by them or get worse."

how much time after taking paxil does it get to your brain and start working? the thing is i didnt take paxil for 2 days and i really feel sick right now and i just took the pill and want to know when i am going to feel better...

I am on 25 meds. Why do I feel sick? I went to a psychiatrist to help me with a mild anxiety problem. I have to give a presentation in front of a hundred people and I am a bit nervous about it. My psychiatrist put me on: Olanzapine Clozapine Effexor Wellbutrin Zyprexa Rispiridone Paxil Zoloft Valiuum Trazadone Serzone Lithium He told me that these medications would help my anxiety. I feel sick all the time. My limbs twitch and I throw up every morning. Why do I feel sick? Should I take more medications??

i feel sick all the time? i am 32 years old..i always have headaches, feel dizzy, urinate alot, heart burn, sometimes can't sleep but even when i do , i just feel exhausted, i was on seroquel 400 mgs a day for bipolar and 40 mgs of paxil for manic depression, my mouth gets dry and i am always so thirsty, always feel sick..i just want to feel better

Switching from Effexor to generic Venlafaxine - I feel so sick!! Help? Hi everyone, Ok so first I will say I have a doctors appt for tomorrow afternoon - so I am in no way going to self diagnose or switch meds by myself. I just have a question for anyone who has struggled with severe depression and anxiety - or a mild case of bi-polar. I have been on/or at least tried most anti-depressants. Prozac worked great for years when I was age 16-21, then it seemed to stop working well. I have tried cymbalta, zoloft and paxil. In October I found a new doctor after moving out of state. I had always been treated with the diagnosis of severe depression + anxiety. After speaking with my new doctor, she thought I may have a mild case of the bi-polar disease. I do have manic episodes - though not anything that would hospitalize me (yet lol). And super low - lows. She put me on Effexor. Within 2 weeks i felt my depression begin to lift - and my anxiety seemed to almost get worse.... Then after 6 weeks or so, the anxiety was OK but not great. Mind you, I also was a very heavy drinker. So I am not sure how well this med ever got a chance to work in the last 3 months.... Recently my insurance termed - and I switched to Venlafaxine (which is effexor generic). I did the switch to generic 12/30/08 - I just switched from effexor to the generic --- as I read they are nearly identical. I also QUIT drinking on 01/08/09 completely, and am working an AA program. I have a healthy diet, no booze the last 10 days, and have been going to the gym for 2 weeks. HOWEVER, with all of this good stuff I am doing in my life - I have been dizzy, lightheaded, had vertigo and feel sick most of the day since about the 5th of January... I still have very bad anxiety - though the depression still seems under control. Are all these dizzy, nauseous, vertigo feelings from going to generic you think? Or maybe they are the TRUE side effects for me, and I had blocked them from all of my drinking and cancelled out what the anti-depressant had been doing for me or to me should I say.... I am going in to see if effexor/venlafaxine is just not the right fit for me - I am not sure what my next option would be after this??? I just wanted to throw this out there, in case someone had a similiar reaction as mine to this medicine and what they ended up switching to or finding helped take the side effects away?? Thanks all!

Helen W. replied: "You don't say what type of doctor you are seeing. I hope it is a psychiatrist, because the sort of issues you have are not something that a typical family doctor or internist will be able to handle. It is very important for you to know that Bipolar disorder treatment is different than the treatment for simple depression. Typically an antidepressant is not used alone but together with a mood stabilizer (such as Depakote). You should also know that it is common for Bipolar sufferers to self-medicate with alcohol, and to find that their symptoms get much worse when they quit drinking. With less than two weeks of sobriety, though, it's hard to tell anything. (I congratulate you on your decision to quit drinking, by the way--I quit ten years ago myself.) I urge you to work with a good psychiatrist as you work toward stable abstinence. One more comment...I went to AA for a number of years, and I was quite disheartened by the attitude of some AA members that dually diagnosed people should not take psychiatric medications on the grounds that they "weren't really sober" if they did so. Needless to say, this is terrible advice, and should be ignored. The best thing I learned in AA is this: "Just don't drink, even if your ass falls off.""
