Questions and Answers
How long did it take for YOU to star feeling positive effect of paxil? Please don't answer like "It usually takes 4 to 6 weeks..." I want to hear personal experiences. On what day did you notice positive effects coming up?

Candy M replied: "It took about 5days for me.I could feel a different in no time after it got into my system. No more sitting around crying for no reason."

Hi my name is: ANIMAL replied: "I didn't. Granted I took it when I was 16-17 which was not recommended but my doctor told me it was 'safe'. I felt great at first it took about 2 months I was no longer depressed or anxious all the time. But then I felt nothing at all no happiness no anger no depression nothing at all. So I guess it depends on the person some feel the effect faster than others and some feel them then they go away."

2 weeks of paxil - No effect. Should i switch meds? I had a feeling that my depression is linked to dopamine, but my doc prescribed paxil. I've been taking it for 2 weeks to eliminate serotonin deficiency version, and have absolutely no positive effects what so ever. Should i wait longer, or go for Wellbutrin? p.s. There was adverse effects in the beginning, and i kind a liked when i was all wired up, because i feel i need a stimulation (i feel apathy, laziness, and low motivation) But now their all gone, and i feel 100 % the same like when i was without paxil.

Bottom Contributor replied: "You should be discussing this with your doctor. Normally, to see the real effects of Paxil it can take 3 weeks to 2 months, so I don't think quitting now and switching to another drug would be wise. And by the way. It's fine to "feel" that your problem is linked to dopamine, but that's not a medical reason to switch your meds."

Has anyone has any positive side effects on Wellbutrin? I have recently had my medication changed from Paxil to Wellbutrin. On Paxil I was never have any energy, I stay sleepy tired, I've gained about 50lbs. My doctor switched my meds a weeks ago after she weened me off of the Paxil, that was the worst week of my life, coming of of Paxil. I've already started to feel better since taking the new meds this weeks. I just want to know if anyone has anything positive to say about Wellbutrin? I take 100mg three times a day.

Pico replied: "Oh yeah, I had a MAJOR increase in energy. I was lethargic with no motivation before. It helped tremendously with my chronic fatigue. BUT, it caused a sudden outbreak of cystic acne and I had to get off Wellbutrin. Once I was off of it, the acne went away."

Wicked Bad Nonsense replied: "You might lose weight during the first stages of taking it, as it temporarily decreases appetite. Some people would call that positive. Some people find they have more energy, but others find that energy to be more like anxiety."

Elizabeth replied: "Wellbutrin was the best med I've ever taken for depression. Unfortunately, it also made my Tourette's tics go out of control, so I had to stop taking it. Most of the SSRIs did nothing for me, or just made me really irritable and tired. You shouldn't gain weight on Wellbutrin (perhaps you'll even lose what you gained), and it was great for energy for me. It works on different receptors than Paxil, so you may see a marked improvement. But since antidepressants work differently on different people, there's no way to know for sure until you try it for a month or so. Negative side effects were feeling like I'd had a little too much caffeine (always fidgeting), some trouble sleeping (I felt too awake) and dry mouth. But it did help the depression a lot. I was on the same dose as you. I recommend decreasing other stimulant intake while you're on it, especially if you smoke. Caffeine and nicotine seem to make the bad side effects much worse."

RattnRoll replied: "actually some people experience seeing things on Wellburtin."

adelaide replied: "I only took it for one month (lost my insurance and wellbutrin was pricey back then) but for that one month I had little to no side effects. I felt more motivated and had enough energy to get some house cleaning done. Yet I didn't feel moody or spacey or any of those frusterating things. I have positve feelings about wellbutrin. I don't have those low energy symptoms with my depression anymore but my ADHD and anxiety is still running rampant. I've been thinking about looking into meds again. Good luck with yours, I know how frusterating finding the right med can be!"

Increased anxiety after starting Paxil? 3 weeks ago I started taking Paxil for social anxiety disorder. My anxiety is still bad, maybe even worse. Yesterday I couldn't even sit still in my house. I had to keep moving my legs and walking around. Plus, the day before I went to the bank to cash a check and I had a panic attack. Is this stuff ever gonna chill me out? I don't know if my body is still getting used to the drug or if the drug just doesn't work. What do you guys think? When should the early side effects go away and when should the positive effects fully start working?

nickipettis replied: "i didn't have side effects like that. i think you should call your doc tomorrow. This may not be the right drug for you."

punchy333 replied: "Yeah, call your doc and see if you should start something else. Three weeks should be enough time for your body to adjust. Good luck."

Simple Minded replied: "Maybe you can see your doctor again and tell him all the symptoms. Then ask him whether you can change the medication. There are many medications available for Socil Anxiety Disorder. Try deep breathing and visualise a holiday scene when you are feelling anxious. And try muscle relaxation technique. Maybe can help a little. I pray to Jesus and I feel less anxious and much more calm. Jesus is the best thing that happened to my life. He gives me peace when there are storms around."

carelesswhisper1015 replied: "It takes 3 months for a drug to actually make an impact on ones body...Side effects are sometimes instantaneous and don't necessarily go away. Drugs such as Paxil have various side effects..they can react essentially the same or totally different on each person. Notify your doctor if you feel increased symptoms just so they are aware......"

Gard23 replied: "Please read all the literature that came with the medicine ASAP - if you didn't get any, nor the particular leaflet relating to SSRI/SNRI antidepressant use, they can be found on line. The are specific warnings relating to particular side-effects, which are in turn are linked to the drug's Black Box warning (the highest possible level of warning). Many of them relate to possible outward manifestations of drug-induced akathisia; motor restlessness and agitation/thoughts cascading through one's mind are indicators (there are others). The motor restlessness is highly indicative - some people pace, others try to keep still yet find when they lose concentration parts of their body begin to move. Links to the relevant info below - please note the advice as to what to do should a patient be affected. You should read such paragraphs as... "Tell the doctor immediately if you notice worsening depression/other psychiatric conditions, unusual behavior changes (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes (including new/worsening anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, very rapid speech). Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed." "Paroxetine may cause some people to be agitated, irritable or display other abnormal behaviors. It may also cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or to become more depressed. If you or your caregiver notice any of these adverse effects, tell your doctor right away.""

Very simple question, but very important for me (paxil users)? I started using rexetin (same as paxil) a week ago, first two days - 10 mg, then 20 mg a day every morning. At the beginning i was experiencing adverse effects like hypertension, flu-like symptoms, insomnia, but now i don't feel them anymore. As well as i don't feel ANY KIND of positive effects. NONE. Is it still going to work for me? And how will i feel when it will kick in? Just wake up one day eat a pill, and feel unusual effects from it? Or is it going to start gradually?

kirktotallyrocks replied: "Your doctor has probably already warned you that it takes a couple of weeks to start feeling the positive effects of any anti-depressant. Unfortunately, the side effects do start right away. The good news is that the side effects don't last very long (it sounds like you're already getting over them). But yes, the positive is still on its way. It won't happen overnight really. Actually, for me, I just realized one day that I hadn't been feeling so miserable for a few days - it was that subtle! Then I actually started getting happier over the next few days. Those I have talked to that didn't get much benefit from their anti-depressant still got SOME benefit, so it's next to impossible that you won't be feeling at least a little bit better soon. But Paxil wouldn't be so widely used if it wasn't highly effective, so take heart in that. Different people take different amounts of time. Hang in there, it's TOTALLY worth it."

Is anyone taking Prozac? I have just started today and was wondering what to expect? I also take Lamictal, Abilify, Clonopin and am tapering off of Paxil. What effect has Prozac had on you or someone you know? I hope to have more positive energy and lose weight. Paxil really has put the pounds on me.

kate replied: "My friend took Prozac and I don't think it did anything good for her. Her weight didn't change, but she's just drained now. Taking anti-depressants has convinced her that she's really depressed. It's not a good thing, your body becomes dependent on a pill to produce seratonin. I don't think anyone under the age of 25 should be put on anti-depressants because hormones are constantly fluctuating and your body is learning to function as an adult body. But that's just my opinion. If you're looking for a weight-loss drug/energy booster, Prozac isn't it."

sundsqk321@sbcglobal.net replied: "I've been taking Prozac for years. I really can't say that it's had much effect at all on my weight. I take 40mg daily. I was taking that twice a day for several years, but just this past year cut down to once daily. I also take Cymbalta, Xanax, and Topamax."

a_mom replied: "Prozac as with most antidepressants affect people differently. It takes a few weeks for your body to feel the effects. I only know of 4 people on it, but none of them have experienced any weight gain or other side effects. It has worked great for them. They are completely different people. It's has done wonders for them. Sometimes they need to adjust the dosage(lower it or raising it) in the first months. Keep in touch with your doctor and tell him if you do experience side effects. Just like Paxil didn't work, Prozac may not, but there are other antidepressants. Zoloft works good too. Work with your doctor to find the best prescription for you."

cryso22 replied: "I hated Prozac. When I took Prozac (years ago) I felt "crazy" like I wanted to fight people-alot. I had changed my meds to Buspar and Xanax for anxiety / panic attacks. They are fabulous...good luck to you"

April replied: "Took Prozac for awhile for some depression.... it was weeks before it kicked in. Hated it. Got off the stuff as soon as I joined a gym... Hate that too, but it works better.... If you are taking it for depression, you ought to be seeing a doc who can tweak your script cocktail... your weight gain has nothing to do with your meds, it has to do with the number of calories that you are eating... and the more you pack on, the less calories it takes to keep it on, surprisingly. (I know,,,, what a bitc(h), huh???) Change your diet.... see a dietitian to loose the weight, not drugs, sweetie. And, believe it or not, Weight Watchers will indeed help you shed the pounds and keep them off, too. You just can't cheat, and eat that gallon of ice cream twice a week.(been there too) I don't know what your day hours are like, but join a gym I know, pain in the butt... I hate it too, but I go, put on ear phones and just to the routine. You will as well find that your energy will come back when drop some pounds. Your attitude will get better... try the gym every other day, just go... 45 minutes.... 15 on the treadmill, and the other 30 minutes moving around to all the machines....boooorrrriiinnnnnnggggg. But happy. Good luck hon... We've all been there."

Quitting Paxil 10mg!!? Hello all, I had Hernia surgery in early march and had trouble coming out of anesthesia. I had some pretty bad panic attacks and anxiety afterwords. I say a physicians assistant 3 days later who after a thorough exam prescribed 10mg of Paxil for the panic and anxiety. I have been on it ever since and feel like the Paxil has only made things worse for me. I personally believe that I have more anxiety and worry/depression than I did before I started taking the Paxil. I have done a ton of research on this drug and I understand it can take a while to kick in. I have been on it for 2 months and I still feel like the Paxil is doing nothing for me. I have read many negative "and some positive things" about Paxil but I do not want to be taking drugs for something I can fix on my own. My question is since I have only taking 10mg of Paxil for 2 months at such a low dose how many side effects will i experience "if any" weaning myself off of this? I have already contacted my primary doctor about quitting, I am not just going to stop cold turkey. Anyone else have a similar experience getting off of such a low dose? what were your symptoms? I realize everyone is different and some have bad symptoms and some have none at all. Thanks in advance.

Your Friendly Jewish Accountant replied: "I don't know how you can fix it on your own. If you could, why didn't you do that in the first place? Don't wean yourself without a doctor's care. Quitting drugs the wrong way leads to PTSD. Trust me, I've done it stupidly. You think your dose is low, but it's obvoiusly strong enough to leave you feeling differently, doesn't it?"

qwertz88 replied: "If you have been on it for two months and have no improvement I think you should quit it. The doctor will probably tell you there is still a chance it could start working, but in my opinion the chance is very little. Normally you would notice some different after a month if it works for you. Ask your doctor for a gradual quitting plan. It seems like you can quit from 10 mg directly, although I'd recommend two weeks on 5 mg first to problems. The symptoms from quitting abruptly is mostly dizziness, severe headache and "brain zaps" (feels like lightning in your brain). This lasts for about one week. For a few months after quitting you may also feel "weak" or "vulnerable" (depends on the dose you took)."

Jazzy33 replied: "Thankfully you are aware that you need to taper off this type of med even though you've only been on it for a few months. I was on 1/10th of 10mg (yes, that tiny!!!) and didn't know I was to taper as the doctor just told me to stop taking it since I was like you, and found it to make my symptoms even worse. Since I was on a tiny dose, she felt it would be fine to just stop. Well..... I went through 8 months of HELL! I had severe insomnia, adrenaline surges, sweating/racing heart, and so on. It was terrible. So my advice from my experience would be to taper very slowly and very small amounts at a time. If it takes you 4 months to get off of something you took for 2 months by tapering very slowly so that you don't have withdrawl (they like to call is Seritonin Syndrome) symptoms, it's worth it. Best of luck to you and if you find you are having difficulty, I believe I had found an online support group called PaxilProgress that helps with all type of antidepressent tapering/discontinuing issues that you may want to look into."

Are fish oil and B-complex supplements safe to take with SSRIs? I've taken Paxil 30mg for years. I've taken the B-vitamin complex for a while with no problems. Just recently added Fish Oil to the mix, have not noticed any positive or negative effects as yet. Does this stuff take a while to work? I've only had it for about 5-6 days and notice nothing. Any problems with these?

ribena160 replied: "No it shouldnt cause any problems but sometimes it takes a week or two fo them to make a difference"

SUSAN K replied: "a naturopath told me the dosage should be higher - it can help when tapering off the paxil fish oil helps with depression and bipolar and alot of other things read more about it"

Steve O replied: "Yes, they are safe. B-complex would be good for you to take because it contains B-6 which is required for the production of serotonin. When I am a little stressed or have difficulty sleeping B-complex is helpful, it provides a calming affect. Sometimes it actually will make me sleepy. I have not noticed any mental effects from fish oil, but there is good evidence that it can have a positive effect. It has a significant positive effect on inflammation- I discovered this by accident when dealing with a nerve inflammation issue. I take several capsules per day for this reason."

Paxil for depression and Anxiety ? Male 22. I have been suffering from Severe Anxiety and Depression. Have has several tests and all doctors came to conclusion that my symptoms are due to Anxiety and Depression. I have taken time off from University and small tasks are so hectic for me. I don't know what happened to me. :( I was so active in everything Job, School, Gym. Now I am sitting home from past 2 months. :( I think its genetic and got it from my Mom's side. I was put on Clonazepam for 1 month which helped my Anxiety but made my depression worse. My doctor didn't want me to take it for long time as she said you can get dependent and decided to put me on effexor. I couldn't tolerate its side effects so now she put me on Paxil 10 mg. Anyone who know if it will help my Anxiety and Depression ? Its been three months and i don't know what happened but I can't function properly at all. Please don't scare me with side effects of it :(. I really want to get back on track. Any positive thoughts and do I have any hope ? btw. This started when I had a sever Panic Attack back in November that landed me in E.R.

Gavin M replied: "Well, Paxil was a miracle for my mother. She says she doesn't feel any side effects, and it made her completely normal. But it just depends on your genetic make-up. A miracle for one person can be a disaster for another. You have hope :)"

zeta_lilly replied: "I don't know if this will help you or not, but I had severe anxiety for years. Some depression, but mostly anxiety. I started on a gluten free diet of a whim and it all went away. I think in my case it was a result of celiac disease. You may not have celiac like I did, but I think a gluten free diet is worth a try. If it doesn't work then no harm done. If that doesn't work, I used citalopram and it worked pretty well. I didn't like being on it because it made me hungry and my sex drive was nonexistant, but it did help with anxiety. By the way, what were your other symptoms? Good luck to you."

css0199 replied: "paxil is for depression and anxiety, but 10mg is a starter dose. ask your dr. to increase your dose. and if it doesn't help there are lots more drugs to try. don't give up. also b-vitamins can help with depression and stress. try taking a b-complex too. and as far as hope, you wouldn't ask for help without it. focus as much as you can on any (even little) thing that is good. a little at a time, small thing by small thing, train your thoughts to be more positive. its hard to jump from dpressed to happy, but much easier to progress gradually (there is hope i will get through this, i have hope i can get through this, right now i am a little better than i was, it will feel good when the meds start really working, i will feel better tomorrow than today, i feel good for the most part, i am doing much better than i was, i've come a long way, et.c.)."

Denise replied: "I had a bad reaction to it, but i know alot of people it worked good for. You just have to try it out and see if it works for you."

Whats with all the sudden mental illness? Why do we think it's okay to give barely understood psychotropic meds to people-including children-for issues that are often misdiagnosed? What is with the current trend to label parolees as bipolar and medicate the? Do you feel that chemicals such as Wellbutrin, Paxil, Zoloft, and the others, which can have horrific side effects, are REALLY better than an herbal remedy like marijuana which infact aids in relaxation and stimulates creativity and other positive feelings? Why are we so against testing herbal remedies?

Midin replied: "I agree its a bit much. BUT this is the first time that many ppl are open to and aware of mental illnesses. Im sure alot are mis diagnosed but this is fairly new to us. Back in the day you were just called crazy or retarded for any mental illnes you had no matter how small. I think most of it is us just figuring what is and what is not a mental illness. I think natural remedies are much better in the long run and more safe if used properly."

Deep_Sinatra replied: "We're wrong when doing this, we shouldn't be afraid of herbal remedies but the fact is that's easier to blame others for the bad results."

Agent S replied: "u know ppl in less developed countries with poverty and war and corrupt politics dont take all this shit.there life is probably a tad bit harder and they go there entire lifes without all these medications.sometimes i think wer all brainwashed into consuming all these cures for all these deseases that didnt exist 40 or something years ago, and ppl were ok back then."

Zinya replied: "I was diagnosed with manic depression in 1996. After years of taking pills that I hated I finally quit taking them. The only medicine that has ever truly helped my disease that the big drug companies made up to sell there pills is marijuana. Call me a pothead ,call me a stoner, whatever. I have been smoking for more than a decade and my mind is as sharp as ever. I feel better physically, emotionally, and spiritually ever since I stopped taking trileptol. The reason they say we are against herbal remedies is because they grow out of the ground. The big drug companies know people would just grow it themselves and they wouldn't be able to rob us blind."
