Does the drug Pravastatin cause cancer in the elderly? My wife has taken the drug Pravastatin for over a tear. She developed bone cancer. I read this drug can cause cancer in the elderly. Has anyone else experenced problems with this drug.

My Dad had a stroke in Nov. 07 and he was put on a script drug called Pravastatin, ever since then he has been? Unable to walk up our driveway and back. Wondering if anyone has heard about the rumors of the "Statin" prescription drugs and the effects they have?

Mrs. Doubtfire replied: "Statins frequently have side-effects that directly cause joint and muscle problems. It will do him no harm whatsoever (as regards his stroke incident) to reduce or even gradually stop his Pravastatin, and see if it hepls his mobility. I assume he's on other medications, -not only the statin.. it might well be a side-effect of the combination. Look at the information-sheet that comes with the Pravastatin. It will give you an idea,"

ckm1956 replied: "You didn't say WHY he can't walk. Just because his legs are weak doesn't mean that the drug is the cause. A stroke patient has many reasons for weakness. Before making any changes, talk to his doctor."

Nellie Bly replied: "Polymyositis can occur with a direct link to statin drugs. There is no cure, only management of this disease.Polymyositis is more prevalent than reported. This disease is autoimmune and attacks and destroys muscle tissue. Its victims are usually placed on prednisone to slow its progress. There are statin medications that are less likely to cause polymyositis than others.Dosage reduction would also be important. There is also a medication that is not a statin to help lower cholesterol.Sorry, but I can not recall at the moment. Your father needs to be evaluated by a rheumatologist.Blood work and possible biopsy to diagnose polymyositis is in order. The biopsy is usually taken from the thigh muscle near the knee. Best of luck to your family.Stop the statin for now and get some help."

My doctor put me on a drug called pravastatin,? later I was admitted to hospital with severe back pain, after tests the consultant discovered my liver was badly damanaged. It was caused by the pravastatin, my own doctor forgot to monitor me, will my liver get better I don't smoke or drink

My mother is taking Pravastatin. She has muscle pain. Doctors do not take as drug related. Best treatment.? Zocor and Lipitor, which are taken to lower cholesterol, can produce symptoms that mimic the flu. Doctors can easily miss the connection, but muscle aches may signal tissue breakdown. That can lead to serious kidney damage. Bottom Line Yearbook 2002 by Bottom Line Personnel, page 13 As it turns out, at least 81 more deaths were connected to Baycol's sisters -- Mevacor, Pravachol , Zocor, Lescol, and Lipitor. prescription drug addiction? does n e one know anything about prescription drug addiction i take monomax, amlopodine aspirin pravastatin folic acid PLUS 75mg amitrptyline per night mirtazapine 15 mg per night zamadol(tramadol) 2x50mg twice a day, up to 6 dihidrocodeine30mg per day all prescribed by hospitals,i have osteoporosis,no stomach, and terrible arthritis.i dont drink and havn`t for years, any one any advice on this

Jeffrey P replied: "Narcotics, dihydrocodiene, and sedatives can be addictive. However, if you have chronic pain that cannot be relieved by other means (surgery, therapy, and/or non-narcotic medicine), it may be appropriate to take narcotics. You may well get dependent (go through withdrawal is the drug is stopped) and tolerant (need progressively higher doses over time). However, most people who take narcotics for legitimate reasons do not become "addicted". Addiction is more than physical dependence. It is the seeking of a substance such that it injures your health and social relationships. Addiction can start with the treatment of acute pain, and can happen with the treatment of long term pain."

Elaine M replied: "You might try accuputure. I found that accuputure is the next best thing for treatment and might assist you in eliminating the drugs you are taking. If you find a good acupuncturist, they will treat you with herbal medicine to help you get off the prescription drugs."

tink replied: "if your worried ask your doctor and ask if there are any herbal medication you could take instead.... i had new hip 4 yrs ago due to birth defect and have had arthritis since childhood... i now use a Tens machine to stop pain it worked 85% of the times... enough to allow me to come off pain killers unless its server pain. you can get the from boots and some gps have them to loan out. this may only be for a week or two... email me if you want a chat"

Eternal replied: "HC: Just because you take many medicines on prescription does not IN ANY WAY make you an addict! The first five drugs have no potential at all for addiction. (more than a placebo) The last four are a bit more tricky. From what you mention they would seem to be appropriate. If you need them to manage an underlying medical condition - you are not an addict. Taking pain killers because you have a painful condition is not an addiction. If you feel you do not need to take them anymore I would urge to to discuss this with your prescriber, who I'm sure would be happy to guide you along."

A S replied: "talk to your doctor"

Are any of these drugs dangerous? Hi, my dad is taking these two medications for controlling blood pressure etc. He said he thinks he saw something on TV about the drugs being dangerous, causing heart-attacks or cancer etc. Does anyone know anything about this? The two drugs are: LISODUR 20mg Pravastatin Winthrop 20mg Thanks.

Michael P replied: "Yes. They're all highly dangerous. All drugs offered by the pharmaceutical industry are only to take your money and make you an addict. It's all a big scam. Try alternative medicine instead."

NeverOnTime replied: "I have hypertension (high blood pressure), but take different medication. I've never heard of these, sorry. Do a search on "drug recalls" or just on each medication. Use the FDA website. FDA.COM Best Wishes :)"

Az R replied: "Both those drugs are used to prevent heart attacks and treat heart conditions. Lisodur is an ACE inhibitor, a rather safe class of medications. Useful for cardiovascular problems, lowering the incidence of heart attacks, and staving off death once heart failure has started to occur. The actual action of these guys is... well pretty damned complicated. They act in a lot of ways to reduce the load on the heart and cardiovascular system. Pravastatin is a statin drug. Also very safe. Problems with this class of drugs tend to involve people not liking to take them, one of the more common side effects being an achey feeling in the muscles. What this does is inhibit the enzyme in your liver responsible for a large amount of the circulating LDL in the blood. By reducing LDL, coronary artery disease from cholesterol based plaques in the arteries is reduced, lowering the risk of a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Neither of these drugs has any cancer potential - even theoretical. Not in a test tube, not in any animals. And they're used to prevent heart attacks."

Do you take cholestral drugs & diabetic meds? My doctor wants me to take Pravastatin 20 mgs. I have never been a person who wants to take alot of meds. Has anyone had problems doing this or successes or anything else you can tell me will be appreciated.
