Can Prednisone jack up a full blood count test. Namely my platelet count & that test included thyroid funct.? I have 2 herniated disc & take Prednisone & get cortisone shots in my spine These medications are not long term & cycle as needed because of the sides. Some of my test came back real elevated. I had a platelet count of 700+. I guess I had a over active thyroid because it was like .03 or something like that. All I know is that it's over active. Can someone explain please
I'm sorry I think that would be 700K
rosieC replied: "The normal platelet count is 150,000. The platelets are needed for coagulation to prevent bleeding. It mediates in clot or fibrin formation. So with platelet count so low; bleeding time is prolonged. Corticosteroids such as Prednisone ( it's converted to prednisolone ny the liver) and cortisone are used to suppress the immune system and inflammation. such as in bursitis. It is also used in treatment of thrombocytopenia by raising the platelet count. Your platelet count of 700,000 is unusually high. Another minor side effects is overactivity as it overactivates your thyroid.
Prednisone and prednisolone are members of the glucocorticoid class of hormones. This means they are steroids but, unlike the anabolic steroids that we hear about regarding sports medicine, these are "catabolic" steroids. Instead of building the body up, they are designed to break down stored resources (fats, sugars and proteins) so that they may be used as fuels in times of stress. Cortisone would be an example of a related hormone with which most people are familiar. Glucocorticoids hormones are produced naturally by the adrenal glands.
We do not use the glucocorticoids for their influences on glucose and protein metabolism; we use them because they are also the most broadly anti-inflammatory medications that we have. Their uses fit into several groups:
Anti-inflammatory (especially for joint pain and itchy skin)
Immune-suppression (treatment of conditions where the immune system is destructively hyperactive. Higher doses are required to actually suppress the immune system)
Cancer Chemotherapy (especially in the treatment of lymphoma)
Central Nervous System Disorders (usually after trauma or after a disc episode to relieve swelling in the brain or spinal cord ) as in your case.
Shock (steroids seem to help improve circulation)
Blood Calcium Reduction (in medical conditions where blood calcium is dangerously high treatment is needed to reduce levels to normal)
Prednisone is activated by the patient's liver into Prednisolone.
Prednisolone may be administered in tablet form or produced by the body from prednisone. These medications are considered to be interchangeable.
.
Glucocorticoid hormone use can be irritating to the stomach at higher doses.
INTERACTIONS WITH OTHER DRUGS
Glucocorticoid hormones should not be used in combination with medications of the NSAID class (ie aspirin, Rimadyl, phenylbutazone etc.) as the combination of these medications could lead to bleeding in the stomach or intestine. Ulceration could occur.
CONCERNS AND CAUTIONS
Prednisone and prednisolone are considered to be intermediate acting steroids, meaning that a dose lasts about a day or a day and a half. After two weeks or more of use, it is important to taper the dose to an every other day schedule so as to keep the body's own cortisone sources ( body's own adrenal glands) able and healthy.
Prednisone/Prednisolone use is likely to change liver enzyme blood testing and interfere with testing for thyroid diseases.
When prednisone/prednisolone is used routinely, serious side effects would not be expected. When doses become immune-suppressive (higher doses) or use becomes "chronic" (longer than 4 months at an every other day schedule), the side effects and concerns associated become different. In these cases, monitoring tests may be recommended or, if possible, another therapy may be selected."
anyone been on prednisone and have advice on its side effects? I have reactive arthritis and was given a shot of prednisone 5 weeks ago. It didn't seem to help much and tomorrow (when I FINALLY see my rheumatologist for the first time since leaving the hospital) they're going to want to give me a second shot but after reading online about the drug I'm not so sure I want it. I'm not overweight, 5'9 and 155lbs, but I've been careful about my diet and jogged regularly to stay that way, now that I can't work out at all because of the arthritis I'm terrified of taking a drug that can cause thyroid suppression, muscle and bone breakdown, and general weight gain. Am I nuts if I choose to stay in more pain rather than gain weight?
embellishment3 replied: "I have known people who have gained alot of weight while taking prednisone tablets. You are not nuts to choose this.If you were to have alot of excess weight then you would more then likely feel more pain because of the weight you would be carrying around.Speak to your Doctor about your concerns."
Tracy J replied: "Prednisone is a very scary drug with all of its side effects. I was on it for a year. It can be a mirical drug for the symptoms, but a hateful drug with the side effects. You have to weight out the benefits and the down sides, deff. talk to your dr. about your concerns.
I has the worst case of cystic acne you have EVER seen from it, and I gained alot of weight, about 80 lbs. But it did help my Crohns. So would i go on it agian? ONLY if it were life or death.
Good luck to you"
Christine S replied: "Yeah if I were on your shoes I would be thinking the same way too..Anyway, prednisnone is a popular drug used to treat arthritis since it is known to decrease inflammation relatively fast. I've read that recent evidence has shown that in addition to its ability to help people feel better by decreasing joint swelling, joint pain, and fatigue, it also has the capacity to slow joint damage.
With a low dose of this drug there are only a few known side effects. Usually side effects appear with high doses and long term treatment only. However in your case, I believe that your doctor prescribed you the drug with the understanding that its benefits outweighs the risks. But if you really feel that the drug is too much for you then it is best if you talk with your doctor about the alternatives available for you. Hope I've been helpful as I could be.. Good luck.."
Katkat P replied: "My daughter is only twelve and she is on 60mg of prednisone everyday. Yes, it is hard but it will all soon pay off. If you just keep taking it and not cheating it, it will soon be tapered by your rheumatologist and soon it will be gone. If you cheat it like my daughter did (my daughter was on about .5mg each day) because she didn't like the way she looked and she hated the weight gain, she soon became sick again and went back up to 60mg as she is now. See if she never cheated it, she would have been off of it by now.
See my advice to you is that just keep taking your meds and in the long run.....it'll soon pay off. Yes, i know the weight gain and the mood swings might be hard but you'll regret it in the long run if you don't take it."
hives caused by low thyroid? I have every symptom of a low thyroid problem but my tests are fine. Also for the last year i have gotten hives every day and every night as you can guess i don't get much rest at night. I have gone to the dr a few times, the dr just says to take benadryl. I take about 100 a month. Than when i got TMJ they gave me prednisone and the hives went away while i was on them. The day after i finished the hives came back again but also when i was on the prednisone all my "thyroid" problems went away. I told the dr this and she just nods and is like its all in your head i should see a shrink.
I was wondering if any of you have had this happen to you?
Lorinda P replied: "Did the doc test your t3 or t4 because the only way to be sure its not hypothyroidism is to test the t3 and fsh to be sure? Some docs will only test the t4 and that is not specific in diagnosing it. I am not sure about the hives b/c I never experienced that. I would also suggest another dr preferably an Endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid and the endocrine system."
Does using Prednisone make you disillusional? i was wandering if Prednisone makes u dillusional. my fiance had to take it for 2-3 wks after his surgery for thyroid cancer. he just went almost crazy, saying that he was jesus.. and that i was a bad person, i gave him cancer. he thought i was out to get him. so eventually all the mental drama made me break up with him. but now that he weaned off of it he sounds back to normal. he is asking me to forgive him and that it was his medication. he even tried to take money that was mine. i am wandering is all his behavior really a side effect or an excuse for his real intentions? Please help i still love him but am afraid to go back to him.
IQ replied: "NO! Side effects include increased appetite and improved mood, but it does not cause delusions. It may have caused them for your fiance, though, if he is allergic to it. Have him go back to his doctor right away to check for an allergy."

Once, I took it for nearly 2 months, and that was the only time I had negative side effects. Even after all of this, I didn't have any dillusions or behavioural side effects that I could not control. Best of luck to you."

Prednisone also causes puffiness of the face (moon face), growth of facial hair, thinning and easy bruising of the skin, impaired wound healing, glaucoma, cataracts, ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, worsening of diabetes, irregular menses, rounding of the upper back ("buffalo hump"), obesity, retardation of growth in children, convulsions, and psychiatric disturbances.

What connections are there between hypothyroidism and sinus problems? My son has been diagnosed with HSP and, as a result, kidney disease. It is believed that some autoimmune disorder is the cause. He takes prednisone and still suffers illness from coughing and sinus congestion. I have hypothyroidism and was wondering if this might be the cause for his problems as well. His thyroid tests came back on the low side of normal range which mine did as well. They treated me anyway. Please help.
Please note that I do not feel that my hypothyroidism is like a virus attacking his body. I want to know if he might have hypothyroidism. I know that my condition is not contagious.
jdub replied: "I don't think that you having hypothyroidism is the cause for your son's Henoch-Schloin Purpura. True, both hypothyroidism and HSP have an autoimmune cause, but I don't think that your hypothyroidism is causing your son's sinus problems directly. You can ask your doctor to provide you with more literature and maybe do some searches yourself. Hope this helps."
Thyroid issues please help.? I asked this question in the health dept too. I have something called HYPOPITUITARISM hypo pit u it air ism! I have to take birth control just to get my period. I take necon prednisone and synthroid. I have both a pituitary and thyroid problems. I have seen an endocronologist since I was 18. Also I don't know who to go to. Do I see an endocronologist or a gynocologist. Information will be so important to me. Please have you have thyroid problems and conceived? Can you tell me the process, or sum it up/ I'm 32 and I am ready for a baby. Also have any miracles happend like you were told that you couldn;t have a baby and God Blessed you with one. Please all the info could give me a head start. Thanks so much, God Bless
Thank you so much. You lifted my spirits high! You've helped me in ways ive never known. You all gave me hope! GOD BLESS
Benzie replied: "I have Graves Disease (a form of hyperactive thyroid), which was treated with Radioactive Iodine a year before we got pregnant with number. I have been on synthroid since 2005. With my case, I just had my thyroid levels monitored every month -- they changed during my first pregnancy and they didn't change at all with the second. I'm not sure about the hypopituitarism, but I'd imagine both the endo and the gyno will see you throughout trying to conceive and after you do. Good luck to you!"
AmyK replied: "I have Hashimoto's Disease which is a hypothyroid disorder. It is controlled by Levoxyl (same thing as Synthroid) and I have a 5 year old, a 1 year old and am going to deliver another one in July. I see both an Endocrinologist and my OB regularly.
As long as your thyroid is controlled, you shouldn't have an issue. Think positive and don't always believe what the doctor says... they are not always right and serve up some pretty harsh news on a regular basis."
Rocker Wife replied: "First, you CAN get pregnant.
Second, it will take both your OBGYN and your endocrinologist working together. Your TSH should be between 1 and 2 for optimum fertility.
As long as your medication is keeping things under control and your are monitoring things regularly, you should be fine.
If after 6 months of trying (with close monitoring) you are not pregnant run, don't walk, to a reproductive endocrinoligist. REs specialize in fertility issues and can add an expert perspective if you need it.
Best of luck!"
Women with thyroid problems, info needed please? I have something called HYPOPITUITARISM hypo pit u it air ism. I have thyroid and pituitary problems. i have to take birth control just to get my period. I also take prednisone and synthroid. I know I have to ask my doc but, it's complicated. Do I see my endocronologist about this or a gynocologist? I really want to have a baby. It's time. If you have thyroid issues and had a baby, what did you have to do? PLEASE answer to the best of your ability. I don't think god would put this wanting a baby in my heart if i can't conceive. Thanks so much. God Bless
I was seeing a doc steady for 12 yrs, he sent me to a adult endocronologist. I couldn't understand a damn thing he said and I tried going to another doc. In the mix I lost my whole medical file at the old docs, and am starting out like new. No, I'm fat 250, lol at 5'8" also. I put a post in pregnancy. It started with THYROID issues, please help. Siberian Husky has one weepy eye and one side of her nose is crusty. What could be causing this? Storm has a runny eye and crusty nose on the left side of her face. She has a thyroid condition and MMM (Masticatory muscle myositis) - both disorders of the immune system. She is on thyroid medicine and a low dose of Prednisone as treatment. I am trying to dtermine what this may be before we head off to the vet...yet again. Thanks!

Is a stool test for helicobacter pylori more accurate than any other test? Because I don't know why the hell my doctor wants me to shit in a cup instead of just ordering a blood or breath test. Is it more accurate or something? I had over 9 vials of blood drawn the other day to test for everything from thyroid problems to mono to anemia, all just because I'm having acid reflux AFTER I WAS ON SUPER HIGH DOSES OF PREDNISONE! Uh, hello! Could that be the cause?!!?!?! *rolls eyes* I KNOW that I don't have ulcers caused by the helicobacter pylori, as does she, but she's just being a fucking douche bag.
Anyway, I'm irritated that I have to shit in a cup. It's fucking embarrassing and stupid. It's also a HUGE inconvenience to have to drive over 45 minutes to the hospital to drop it off. She seems like a fucking wack-job to me.
What do you think? Thanks a lot.
nobodyinparticular replied: "I found a link for you that describes all the tests.
Apparently, the breath test is about as accurate as the stool test. The drawback of the breath test is that you have to swallow a radioactive compound, which means it probably has to be done in the nuclear medicine department of a hospital. The blood test is less accurate, since it will show positive if you have had H. pylori before and recovered.
Doctors ask for stool samples all the time, and often forget how disgusting all of us patients think it is. Under the circumstances, the stool test seems to be the simplest and most likely to yield usable results.
Prednisone can cause ulcers. If you have H. pylori, the ulcers are unlikely to go away on their own.
This sounds like a rather extensive workup for reflux, which most patients treat on their own with over-the-counter medications. Other than that, I don't consider your doctor to be a whack job."
