Help! Chihuahua sick since being spayed. Constant Cough and dry wheezing and runny nose!!? I thought she had Kennel Cough; however the medicine the vet gave me (Clavamox) didn't help. The vet did an x-ray of her lungs and saw inflammation. She ruled out pneumonia, and thinks the inflammation is due to the continuous dry coughing. Sometimes when my chi starts coughing, she can't stop. She also has a clear runny nose. It is horrible watching her cough uncontrollably. The vet has now given me prednisone to help with her coughing. She has been on it for three days now, and they are no changes in her coughs. She still continues to cough throughout the day. Please Help! I would love any feedback or any other possible ideas to help her!!

GP Feliz Ao Nuevo! replied: "go to another vet, i dont like how this one kept changing medicines..."

Dances With Woofs! replied: "Her trachea and lungs may be inflamed from the endotracheal tube and the anesthesia.I would ask your vet to put her on a course of antibiotics just to be safe,in case she may have vomited while coming out of anesthesia and inhaled a bit of it.Also, use steam to make her feel better, and give her warm chicken broth with a little honey in it.It is soothing to the throat. You can also ask for Torbutrol or Hycodan ( these are cough suppressants and can help her sleep, poor little thing.) I hope she feels better."

Marsha B replied: "sounds like you need a second opinion... go to another vet and have your dog tested for kennel cough"

My mother has a chronic cough that has lasted over 6 months & no diagnosis! What's wrong? Here's some more background info... My mother is 57 years old. She has post nasal drip and is obese. She started coughing around last November... it is a loud hacking cough and it is mostly a dry cough. She coughs all day at work and all night at home, but there are periods where it will subside for a short period of time. She did not go to the doctor until 2 months ago. The doctor listened to her chest- nothing unusual. He took blood- nothing unusual. He figures it might be a chest infection but did not give her anything to take... just let it go its course (even though she's been coughing for months!) So a month ago I made her go back and try to get an answer or diagnosis. The doctor this time gives her prednisone and some other cough med. The cough subsided when she was on the meds, but as soon as it was over, she is back to coughing! There are 4 of us who live together, she is not contagious or we would have gotten sick after all these months. I think her doctor is over looking things but I'm not a medical expert. I don't know how to help her, she's been really tired from all the coughing. Obvious illnesses have been ruled out by the doc- she doesn't have TB, bronchitis, or asthma. She doesn't smoke. If there are any doctors on here or anyone who has an idea or something they went through, I'd like to hear! Thanks! @doc Yes, my mother has insurance, she has a high paying job & is very educated. She doesn't have TB because she had a ppd twice and plus she'd be coughing up greenish flem. This is not pneumonia either... she doesn't have those symptoms. I definately agree about getting a second and maybe third opinion. Btw, this doctor is her internist... I still say he should have known to give her a chest xray.

doc_up72 replied: "She needs to go to a real doctor; and get a second opinion. Be tested for TB, does she work around chemicals? Does she use a lot of bleach at home? Has she had a chest x-ray? Does she smoke. See a diagnostician (if you can find one) if not go to an internal medicine specialist. Good luck P.S. Her Dr. gave her a bandaid, the corticosteroid will cause the inflammation to subside(temporarily since he apparently didn't give to her on a maintenance schedule,he probably did a decreasing schedule 7,6,5,4,3,2,1)? And the cough med is probably a narcotic that will simply stifle the cough reflex. He's not treating her seriously. Why do I get the feeling she doesn't have any insurance? Ok I didn't read the whole question sorry. How did he rule out TB?If she doesn't have bronchitis then why the predinsone. Walking Pneumonia? The bottom line is he's not doing everything he can to get to the root of the matter. Get a second opinion."

Serious lingering cough? My boyfriend has been having Dry (unproductive) cough for nearly a year now. He has gone to multiple doctors, had chest X-rays, blood tests, and a Cat scan and everything comes back negative (meaning he has no signs of anything wrong). The cat scan was the most recent. He is getting extremely aggravated and has no clue what it is and what to do. So far they have tried giving him Advair (didn't work), Albuterol (didn't work), Prednisone (didn't work), Ciproflauxin (didn't work), and he has tried cough drops, robitussen, Nyquil, dayquil, and other over the counter cough suppressants. If anyone has any idea or anything we can do please let me know. I am getting worried. The cough just keeps getting worse and it seems there is no end to this in the near future since the Doctor's are just saying "here try this" over and over with no results. Oh and we both are non-smokers and he has a cat but they have found no allergies to pet dander... Please tell me all you can

I think I'm dying, help?!? Ok well, not really, but still! I got the flu like 4 weeks ago and since I'm nursing there was pretty much nothing I could do. Well, it progressed in to a headache that would not go away, in to a cough that kept the headache around, in to a dry cough, cough with gunk and back and forth like that since. Monday I went to an urgent care facility where he just prescribed me with a Z-pack antibiotic and prednisone. The cough is still very existent and horrible. My back, neck, jaw, and head hurt so badly from all of it. I'm done with the Z-pack and went ahead and made another appt with my doctor for Monday in case nothing clears up in the next few days. Is this bronchitis? Oh my Gosh, it's terrible. Tylenol/Ibuprofen... nothing works. Not even cough medicine!

Fire Dude replied: "i don't know, i'm not a docter! but even if it was bronchitis, i would't kill u unless, u did nothin to care for it. duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

Jonny T replied: "give the NHS a call"

Aislings Mum 09.25.08 replied: "All you can really do is ask your doctor on Monday so they can look into it. Sounds horrible though. Hope you get better really soon hun!! I know I hate being sick :("

Daniel's Mommy replied: "This happened to me about a month ago. The doctor told me I had bronchitis, ear infections and tonsillitis. I was on amoxicillin and a salbutamol inhaler. I felt better for about 5 days, and then everything started getting worse again. I was short of breath, I had an extremely bad cough and just felt blah. I went to the hospital monday and found out I have asthma."

Aspeth M. replied: "Well, this year's flu is terrible and I understand your persisting pain. I advise that, since medicine has not helped (which isn't the best way to go when nursing), I suggest that you go natural. Try ginger tea. The spice of the ginger and the medicinal effect is strong. Here is the recipe: Ginger Tea Recipe # water, 4 cups # 2-inch piece of fresh ginger root # optional: honey and lemon slice (do not use sugar or artifical sweeteners) Peel the ginger root and slice it into thin slices. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Once it is boiling, add the ginger. Cover it and reduce to a simmer for 15-20 minutes. Strain the tea. Add honey and lemon to taste. You should also drink plenty of water to clean your body of the virus (I suggest about 10 glasses a day).A tablespoon of honey and fresh lemon juice also helps. You should also try grinding black pepper and swallowing it. I have had a very bad case of the flu, which came back two times and all of this finally cleared it up. I hope it helped :) If you have any further questions, feel free to ask."

Isabella's mum is pregnant replied: "OH MY GOD, you gave me a freakin' heart attack girl.Gees, don't ever do that again. Have you tried steam? I know that is so basic but it helped me a lot when i had the flu. Steam really clears your head."

What causes excessive phlegm originating from my throat? My nose and sinuses are clear and there is no nose discharge. My chest is also clear and I have no cough condition either. At night towards morning I feel a dry and sore throat which goes away as the day advances. Any time I can expectorate small quantities of sticky and slightly yellow phlegm from the base of the throat and wind pipe. Occasionally I get muscle pains as if I am due for a viral infection. I have no fever. So far my GP prescribed and I have taken anti biotic Doxycycline and Roxithromycin, Prednisone, Beclomethason and last Omerprazole without any reduction of the symptoms. I wonder if this can be due to a cancer condition in my throat.

starrwoode replied: "it can very well be a food allergy, one of the ones that causes phlegm like that is milk. see if not having any milk or cheese products helps for a week. good luck, oh and you may need a humidifyer in your room. just the cool mist ones from the drug store will help and they arent horridly expensive."

Rich A replied: "It might be a side effect of one of the drugs you are taking. Check out the side effects. I have medications that have caused all sorts of issues. If it's not an infection, I doubt if it's cancer. Your GP would have already detected that. Do you smoke? Try drinking more water, and if you do smoke, stop."

citizen insane replied: "Well, your symptoms certainly don't suggest cancer, but I'm kind of wondering why you're on Predisone for a sore throat. It sounds like you have some kind of bacterial pharyngitis or mild bronchitis (the purulent exudate you desribe is consistent) that hasn't cleared up yet -- though it might not while you continue taking corticosteroids. You might need to switch antibiotics if the bacteria is resistant to what you're currently taking."

NonStop coughing for 3 years? 3 years ago, i had pneumonia. Since then, I have never stopped coughing...and i mean never. Its a dry wheezing cough, that produces no mucus, and I always feel as though i need to clear my throat. I feel the cough coming from a deep "tickle" in my chest every time i breathe. I blow my nose, but nothing ever comes out. It gets worse when i eat or drink anything. I've been to a pulmonary specialist who said i had asthma. I've been on Advair and Albuterol for 2 years, but the coughing has never gone away or gotten even slightly better, and i never feel like i've had an actual asthma attack. I've also gotten bronchitis and/or pneumonia each of the last 3 years, and obviously each time the cough gets worse, but never goes away. I can hardly finish a sentence without stopping to cough/clear my throat. Sometimes the coughing attacks get so bad, i get dizzy and disoriented. Im just getting over bronchitis again, and a few nights ago, coughed so much i felt almost drunk. I was so out of it i could barely hold a conversation. My face has also gotten numb during some of these attacks. The only relief i get is when i lay down to sleep. It takes about an hour of shallow breathing before the coughing slows and then i sleep. When i wake up my chest feels stiff, and dry, but i dont cough... but once im up and going, the coughing starts again. When i do sleep i snore extremely loud, and seem to maybe have sleep apnea, as i waking up gasping on occasion. I'm 25 years old and had smoked for just 5 years, but when i got pneumonia the first time 3 years ago, i stopped. I'd like help from my doctors but they just blow it off as a cold, or bronchitis. (i'm still on prednisone from the most recent bronchitis, and it's giving me terrible heart burn, which of course doesn't help the cough) All i want to do is sleep all the time to relieve the stress of all this coughing. Any ideas...Its not like i can demand a chest x-ray or any other test can I???

Gloria A replied: "I wonder if you had seem a pneumologist. The reason you feel better when you lay daw is because there are more oxigen while you are laying down. It could be an allergy. You should go for allergy test in that way they could find out what is it that trigging that cough. I used to work in an allergy laboratory and we used to make all kind of allergy extract, you could be allergy to some kind of dust, plus respiratory infection. The doctor should prescribe anti-acid called prutonic or pepsic. Never take prednison with an empy stomach. I hope you feel better."

Fater45 replied: "From what I know about asthma, you did not describe one in your question. In any case, you may compare your symptoms with those of this link Try buckley's cough syrup. It is not my favorite tasting cough syrup, but it is very effective for stubborn coughs. Drink lots of home made fruit juices especially citrus juices. Do not have citrus with other foods. Combination of juice such as orange combined with guava or orange, grapefruit, passion fruit, and guava for example works more effectively than a single fruit juice. Guava, oranges, tangerines, grapefruits, passion fruits, grapes, pomegranate, lime, lemons, and pineapple are some very important raw fruits to include in your diet. You may include other fresh raw fruits available to you. Raw vegetable juices are also good. Include celery, parsley, carrot, cucumber, beetroot, watercress or any other vegetables available to you in your juices. Flavor vegetable juices with lemon, or lime and ginger for better taste. Minimize or cut off sweets such as pastries, chocolates, and other stuff made from refined sugar. Drinking a lot of fruit juices, vegetables juices and water is very important."

jamazing41 replied: "One problem may be gastroesophogeal reflux disease. Try taking prilosec or nexium. The reflucted acid that goes down the trachea, can cause a persistent dry cough. Also, I believe that you definitely have chronic bronchitis, which also causes a persistent cough. In any case I would schedule an appointment or get a referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor (ENT)."

Dog Coughing? I have taken her to vet numerous times, regarding this coughing, heart worm test was negative, x-ray was negative just showed scare tissue due to coughing, she is up date on all vaccines. This has been going on for over a year now, and just in vet bills we spend over $200 per visit to get....I don't know what it is, take this prednisone and give it to her once or twice a day as needed for coughing. All that has done is made her gain 15 pounds in the last year. The dog is a West Highland White. her cough is dry, she coughs and gags, breathing gets difficult for her sometimes to where it looks like she is having to force air out of her lungs. There is no doubt that this animal is misserable, and we are miserable watching her cough so much...does anyone have any clues. I have decided to switch vets over $200 per visit is crazy.
