How long does prednisone stay in your system after you taper off? My son was on 50 mg for 2 weeks, 40 mg for 3 wks, now 30 mg for 2 weeks. Supposed to be tapering. Needs to take a test that requires drug/steroid screening and need to know how long it will be in his system?

kristy h replied: "Ask a pharmacist. As long as your son lets the person know that is giving him the drug test that he has taken this medication, he will be ok. They can make a note of it and it wont be held against him."

How long does Prednisone stay in your system or have effects on you after you stop taking it? like moon face and acne? when will these go away? been on it for around three months. highest dose was 40 mg. just got off completely like a week ago..went down 5 mg per week.

Gary B replied: "The major effects start to reduce after about 2-3 days. Yes, things will eventually return to normal. It may take a few weeks, though, as you were on it for a rather long time. But Prednisone stays in your system at the molecular level (almost unmeasurable) for about 6 weeks. It is critical that you do NOT stop Prednisone "cold turkey". By reducing the dosage at 5 mg per week, the doctor makes sure that you do not damage your system by going "cold turkey"."

does anyone know how long the effects of prednisone stay in your system? i was recently prescribed prednisone and an antibiotic for a breathing related problem and i want to know how long the prednisone will remain in my system

Hecaeta replied: "Depends on how long you are on it. If it is a typical 5 day treatment ( i.e 20mg day 1-3 followed by 10 mg days 4-5 and 5 mg day 5 ) this will drop out of your system in about a week. But if you are on it long it can take up to 3 weeks to get over it. The prednisone is used as an anti-inflammatory. And is know to have side effects."

AngelHelper replied: "The longer you are on it.... the longer it will remain in the system. Prednisone is a life safer to many ...especially if you have breathing related issues. As soon as your doctor recommends - start to ween off the prednisone little by little. take care"

Can niacin get prednisone out of your system faster? because prednisone stays in your tissues.

Stacey T replied: "I have never heard that- consult your pharmacist and physician. GOOD LUCK."

How long does Prednisone stay in your system? I took Prednisone for 12 of 14 days for tendinitis. I had the side effects of those who take Prednisone long term so my doctor took me off early. It has been almost a week since I stopped taking it and the side effects have become worse. I have insomnia, acne, extreme belly swelling, 12 lb weight gain, headache, muscle ache, fatigue and my mood has been altered. I am normally a happy, healthy person. Had I known what this steroid would do to me, I would have NEVER taken it. I have literally been unable to work or take care of my child. Can anyone offer any advice or help?

the nurse replied: "You should not have gained 12 pounds within 2 weeks of being on prednisone. Half of the weight could be water retention from the meds. It goes away immediately as soon as the medication is tapered off. Its not that big of a deal to take it for 2 weeks. Some people have to stay on it for years and become steroid dependent and can not get off of it. Be thankful you take it for such a short time Taking it for longer periods of time can even cause cataracts and muscle breakdown. If you are being tapered, its only a short matter of time before you feel like yourself again Good luck and be well"

why does Prednisone interfere with sleep? also how long does prednisone stay in ones system? at a rate of 25mg/day

haider0311 replied: "its a sterroid. explination enough?"

barry_maciel replied: "It has a half life...do the math"

grimmyTea replied: "I'm not sure if it is known for sure. Corticosteroids raise your blood sugar and can also raise your blood pressure slightly. Both of these effects can be stimulatory. That's my best guess (probably the blood sugar more than the pressure). Insomnia could also be secondary to other side effects such as indigestion or headache (you can't sleep because your stomach/head hurts). The half-life of prednisone is about a day (but varies from person to person). If you stopped cold turkey, then after one day, 1/2 would be left. After two days, you'd be down to 1/4th. Three days, 1/8th. Typically five half-lives (five days in this case) is considered good enough to be "completely out of your system." Note that you should ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR DOCTOR'S INSTRUCTIONS regarding starting/stopping prednisone!!! If you have been taking it continuously for a long period of time, stopping suddenly can be extremely dangerous."

tak_duma_dum replied: "Prednisone in low doses like you said. relieves pains. They work at cell level. And very effective for some arthritis. If you suffer from severe pain, and then you have relief, it is normal to feel sleepy. Of course it has some side effects that depend on individuals. Of concern is suppression of imunity."

badgerwithagun replied: "Cortisol, the body's natural steroid hormone has a circadian rhythm - it is highest in the morning and lowest late at night. This is what causes the normal waking-sleeping cycle. Prednisolone is a synthetic steroid, and by taking it, you over-ride your body's natural rhythm of steroid secretion and have a persistently elevated steroid level in your blood stream, leading to insomnia."

I took prednisone for 7 days about 1 month ago..How long will the side effects last for? I only ask b/c they have made me mean, I wonder how long they will stay in my system and cause these mood swings. I have read a ton of blogs, I am mainly looking for personal experience.

formerly_bob replied: "The half-life of prednisone is very short - about 4 hours, so the drug is virtually gone from your system in 2 days. So, changes in mood might last only a couple of days after the drugs is out of your system. Puffiness can last for several weeks, after the drug is stopped. If you were only on prednisone for 7 days, its extremely unlikely that any mood effects from the drug would be present a month later. Seven days is usually not even long enough for most side effects to appear unless you were on an extremely high dose. I have been on high doses of prednisone for months at a time, and the mood effects stopped before i quit taking prednisone - they only lasted the first week i was on prednisone. Everyone is different though, so what happened to me may be irrelevant to your situation. Its possible that the prednisone may have triggered a mood change in you, but the underlying cause of the mood change is probably not from the prednisone."

rkeech replied: "What you are noticing is not due to the prednisone. That is out of your system. Your mood swings and perceives meanness are due to something else."

prednisone? I took prednisone in doses of 60 mil for 5 days then 50 mil for 5 days down to 10 mil for one day. this was for about a total of 63 pills. I am wondering how long the drug stays in your system. I am feeling pretty good 5 days after stopping them and i am wondering if it takes a while to wear off will the other shoe drop and I will have significant back pain again. Thank you

NotAgain replied: "Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory, so sometimes the swelling that causes the pain is temporarily "cured" for a significant amount of time. Usually, the pain will return because the swelling returns. I take steroids about twice a year for rheumatoid arthritis and migraines. Your body can only handle so much of these types of medicines at a time. Depending on your age, you have to have a break between treatments. Hope this helps."

Keko replied: "Work with a chiropractor (who uses ultrasound to reduce the pain) and a massage therapist. Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches). Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles). Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago. Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain. The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles). For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from."
