Pregnancy Valtrex Facts in Q&A
Is is ok for me to take valtrex during my pregnancy? I have Herpes Simplex 1 and I had it 4 a while but never never had any break outs. but now that im pregnant im having breakouts on my lips. i have valtrex but is it safe for me to take it. I know i cant deliver vaginally or ill transmit to my baby. i just don't wanna walk around with this stuff on my lip.

Corasmom replied: "You absolutely CAN deliver vaginally! In fact, it's not only safe, but IMPORTANT to take valtrex once daily (which is called a suppressive dose, because it suppresses the virus and keeps outbreaks away) in your third trimester. That way, you're much less likely to have an outbreak when you go into labor. If, when you do go into labor, you have an outbreak, then you should have a c/section, but if you don't have an outbreak, vaginal birth carries quite a bit less risk that cesarean."

Bunz replied: "havent you heard the commercial that you cant take valtrex while pregnant."

Medic Loretta replied: "you should call your doctor immediately and ask about Valtrex! also you should know that Herpes is not genetic, it's usually passed by skin contact when the baby comes through the birth canal when the mother has an out break of genital herpes. It's possible but herpes can be deadly to newborns, or they could have some problems with. they could become blind or have some brain damage. There are things that can be done to prevent herpes from being passed on when the mother gives birth. Such as having a c-section if there is an out break at the time of delivery. anyway once a person becomes infected, Herpes Simplex Virus lies dormant in the body, waiting for just the right conditions to become active again. There can be many triggers which activate the virus, such as eating arginine-rich foods (like chocolate, cola, beer, seeds and nuts); the onset of a cold or fever; sunburn; the menses cycle & any physical or emotional event that introduces stress to the body. Each person's triggers are different, but all herpes sufferers have one thing in common--worrying about the next outbreak adds even more stress, which just feeds the vicious cycle and makes it worse! And there is no real treatment that can cure herpes, but antiviral medications can shorten and prevent outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication. For example Herpeset is a good (probably the best) product. It works by stimulating your immune system to fight the HSV virus. It worked and is working for me! I do not know if any pharmacies carry Herpeset but I do know that you should purchase it directly from the manufacturer and read more about the product here . In addition, daily suppressive therapy for symptomatic herpes can reduce transmission to partners...! since 2005 I got 5 outbreaks! every outbreak every ~6 months. every spring and every autumn! that was very hard time for me! then I started to use the proper diet for me and some herbal treatment and listen "Bobby McFerrin - Don't Worry Be Happy" . Now I don't have any outbreaks for about ~2 years! good luck! Working in women's health + personal experience"

Is valtrex safe during pregnancy? POSITIVE ADVICE ONLY? I have had herpes for 3 years. I am turning 7 months pregnant on monday and wondering if I should start suppressive therapy now or wait until at least 30 weeks.. My midwife gave me the okay to start therapy at 24 weeks but I felt it was too early. I am having lots of outbreaks lately and just trying to do whats safest for my child. FOR ALL WHO REPLY LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR -- As I stated, im seeing a midwife not an actual doctor. I am being seen at a Naval Hospital because my husband is a US Marine. I have been wrongfully diagnosed at this hospital with a UTI when I was only having gas pains. There are no "REAL" hospitals or "REAL" experts around here. This is why im hoping to gain advice from women who have genital herpes + have delivered healthy children.

SWTCHKS925 replied: "ok, if the Dr has given you the ok, and YOU (the non-Dr) thinks it is too early, who should you REALLY be listening to? obviously the Dr has the degree and knows better than you. And I am sure the health of the baby was the midwife's top priority, so stop asking questions on here, and do what the Dr said."

mlgable replied: "You need to either trust your midwifes orders or if you don't feel comfortable with her recommendations then talk to your doctor and get his opinion. Only a your medical provider or a pharamcist can tell you if it is safe."

john e russo md replied: "Yes valacyclovir (Valtrex) is safe during pregnancy although the safety in breast feeding is unknown which does not mean that it is not safe. The Food and Drug Administration lists valacyclovir as pregnancy category B meaning no known risk which is generally taken to mean quite safe. Another way to look at this is that not taking valacyclovir at the time of delivery (which is not generally something you plan to the day) may pose a risk for the child so go with the valacyclovir and do not worry."

Doc8 replied: "The effect during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you were my patient, I would tell you not to take it as a precaution for the fetus."

newname_01 replied: "you should start suppressive therapy in your final month. Your baby is protected and you shouldn't worry about infecting him/her. however labor is a different story. If you are suffering through an outbreak during labor, you will need to opt for a c-section. I know what you're going through. I'm currently on valtrex and in my final month of pregnancy. check out his sight, its really help full. "

amy s replied: "When I was pregnant my OB said not to use anything for my out breaks. If you ask an OB they say that you should take no drugs while pregnant but some are safer then others."

pregnancy test results and valtrex? hi, does anyone know if the tablet valtrex can alter pregnancy test results? i read on the internet that it does alter the results

Quita G replied: "IT CANT THATS WHAT MY SISTER ASKED HER DOCTOR YESTERDAY"

anna l replied: "no pt only test for the pregnancy hormone so nothing can affect the results"

Valtrex (for herpes) and Pregnancy? I have herpes (thanks to an unfaithful ex-bf, so please no judgments) and I have a prescription for Valtrex. I am 9 weeks pregnant and I have an outbreak and my doctor said that Valtrex is safe during pregnancy. I was just curious if anyone else has taken it during early pregnancy and what they may have experienced from it. Any thoughts on it?

mlk_maid replied: "The last time I went to have my pap. I couldn't help but hear the doctor in the next room talking to one of his patient. She was 8 months pregnant and was telling her to start taking Valtrex in-case the baby came too quick and they would have time to do the c section. So from hearing that, I would assume it is safe for pregnant women."

San Diego Sunshine replied: "I would trust that it is safe of your doctor says it is okay."

Mrs. B replied: "Your baby will be fine. Normally they prescribe Valtex when you're within a month of your due date for you to take daily. They don't want you to be having an outbreak while you go into labor. If they think there is any chance at all you're having an outbreak they'll do a c-section."

Valtrex and Pregnancy? ****Please answer this question if you or someone you know has taken valtrex while pregnant***** Will valtrex cause any side effects to an unborn fetus. I have to stay on suppressive therapy because of the constant outbreaks. I don't know of any alternative treatment and I'm trying to get pregnant. I know a doctor will give me his opinion, but I'd like to get first hand accounts from others. Thank you much!! Thank you for you answers!! This is not going to be an easy process :(

Is it safe to take valtrex in your third trimester of pregnancy? I am 31 weeks pregnant and I keep getting cold sores. My doctor says its just because my body is out of wack from the pregnancy- but they hurt and they are embarising. He gave me 500 mg Valtrex to take when I get a sore. I have done lots of research and all I can find it that there has not been any research on the drug and pregnant women. No adverse effects on animals but that's all. Even though my doc gave them to me I am stll not convinced that it is safe. Has anyone taken the drug while pregnant? What happened to you? Thanks

What happens if you have a herpes outbreak during pregnancy? What happens if you have a herpes outbreak during your pregnany? I am 26 weeks pregnant and had an outbreak. I had my first outbreak a couple months before I became pregnant. Is there any risks in getting an outbreak during pregnancy? And is it ok to take valtrex? My doctor told me to take 3 grams a day. Just looking for other people's experience on this. Yes, it was my dear husband who gave it to me, but he only has the oral kind, I have the *other* kind.

I<3 Sarcasm! replied: "Yes, you can take valtrex during pregnancy. Have your obgyn give you a prescription however because they will know the right dosage. Also, when you are about 37 weeks pregnant you will want to start taking Valtrex daily to prevent an outbreak. Having an outbreak during Labor and Delivery can lead to severe problems in the newborn so its best to start taking the pills a few weeks before you give birth. If you suspect you have an outbreak when you are in labor speak up, you will need a c-section."

Ava replied: "Well, I don't have any personal experience with this but I have read that as long as you did not contract the virus while you are pregnant, the child should be fine. I'm assuming you are referring to genital herpes and not oral? If you are experiencing an outbreak when you deliver, they may advise a c-section to prevent the spread of the disease to the child. I'm not sure if they would want you to use valtrex during pregnancy. That's a Q for the Dr. Best to abstain from sex, I would imagine, to prevent the spread to your partner, unless he was the dear person who gave it to you in the first place!"

Psychic Readings by Raelene R replied: "I'm not sure because I dont have herpes..BUT I do know this: Women who have genital herpes are usually told they have to give birth by C-cection..why? Because the STD can spread to the baby's eyes and everything else in some cases..some women have given birth naturally, but most doctors advise that you get a C-cection..to protect the baby from catching it from you. I hope your doctor does know, that way he can give you the best advice."

LeAnne replied: "it is fine to have an outbreak during pregnancy as long as you dont have one within a month of giving birth. then its too risky to pass on to the baby. you say that you husband has oral herpes and you have the "other" kind. you really probably both have the same strain, but oral herpes can pass to the genitals through oral sex and genital can pass to oral. but really, the strains are different. you likely have the same strain that your husband has on his month, just in a different area. that is a good thing, it is a milder strain and your outbreaks will occur less often and come even less often and be more mild as time passes."

Rehan replied: "During the last 20 years, the management of pregnant women with herpes has gone through several changes. A trial period lasting a decade during which c-section was used liberally to prevent transmission of the virus to the baby did nothing to reduce the risk. It is fairly clear that almost all of the very worst newborn infections occur in women with primary infections with virus in the bloodstream which is transmitted across the placenta. Rarely is a newborn infected by contact with a recurrent lesion during birth, although this clearly happens occasionally. Valtrex is not harmful during your pregnancy. For herpes medication you may visit"

can any of these meds affect a pregnancy test? I take Birth control, Omega 3, Lexapro, and Xanax. I recently took valtrex and diflucan for a yeast infection and outbreak. My test came back positive. Any opinions?

M Kerr RN L&D replied: "You're pregnant! The body is either producing the HcG hormone or its not, meds wouldn't effect the test result! Contact your GP or OB immediately as Xanax is a Class X category med thats NOT to be taken during pregnancy due to the harmful effects it has to the fetus! ETA ~ Sorry its a Class D same effects as an X however! Anything A, B and most C's are safe during pregnancy! is an awsome website that will tell you all about the meds your taking and the effect it can have on the fetus!"

She Didn't Choose This Role replied: "Ohhhh xanax.....how I love xanax.....AH! OH! Wait? What's the question? Oh, I got it now lol j/k. Nope, none of that would effect a pregnancy test. Those test look for the hormone HCG, which can only be found in a pregnant woman. Make sure you see your doctor ASAP because those meds aren't good for your baby!! CONGRATS!!!! =]"

jeselynn_81 replied: "previous answerers said it all.. though from a medical point you need to speak to your doctor right away and dont wait.. with the other medications youve listed and were on.. you need to see if there could be any issues and what your options are.. i take it this wasnt a planned pregnancy.. speak with your doctor soon!"

does anyone know about genital herpes and pregnancy? im clear on the fact that doctors only give a c-section if your having an active outbreak at delivery but what are the chances of a newborn getting the desease delivering vaginally if u had the virus for a year and also taking the valtrex is the risk almost imposible? or is it likely

Pregnancy and cold sores - hoping for more answers? Well, I've avoided the dreaded cold sore for over a year, but this morning I woke up with the tingling and itching sensation. I still curse myself for using my Mom's lipstick when I was a kid!! Anyways, I'm 32 weeks and this is my first pregnancy cold sore. I've taken Valtrex in the past, but I'm not sure about it's use/safety during pregnancy. I also have a tube of abreva hanging about. I've put a call into my doctor to ask him, but of course, he's out of the office until Monday. I'm sure there are some women out there who've had a cold sore during pregnancy, how did you treat it? What did your doctor recommend? Do you know if the Abreva, at least, is safe to use? Thanks!

Amy B a Lubersbunny replied: "My doctor gave me Valtrex ointment. It worked wonders and my son was fine."

jaincor202 replied: "I used Abreva with my first. I didn't ask the dr just assumed it would be ok...my baby was fine!"

SunshineA replied: "not sure, but try looking at the advice leaflet that you get with these. if your unsure try getting a natural lip balm/cold sore cure as this would be better. Valtrex (valacyclovir hydrochloride) is generally considered safe for women who are pregnant. This is based on animal studies that looked at the effects of Valtrex during pregnancy (sorry this is the only information i could get a hold off) your best of talking to a pharmacist"
