Does anyone know anyone who took Accutane and got pregnant after the treatment and went to have a healthy preg? Hi, I took accutane for 6 months and now it's been 2 months i have been off the drug..FDA says to wait just a month after taking the last dosage of the drug to start trying to conceive..some people say to wait 2-3 months, other says 6-12 months i even heard 5 years!!! I need to know if anyone out there took accutane and got pregnant after the 30 days and went to have a healthy pregnancy and baby. Thanks guys!

How safe is it to get pregnant 2mths after taking accutane? Is there any studies that have been done? I have talked to several doctors, all with different answers, one said one month is safe, another said he recommends waiting a year. I also talked to the company who said that it should be ok but that they would like to follow up with me once the baby is born, which makes me wonder what they are worried might happen. We are thinking of terminating the pregnancy as we do not want to take the chance of something being wrong but it is such a hard decisions to make.

helene replied: "According to these two PDFs, you're okay to conceive after a month. Call your doctor though. For something that dangerous, I'd rather get an OK from a live professional than from an electronic document."

carly replied: "They do say it is safe after a month, but I personally feel that is stays in your system for at least 6 months. You are not aloud to give blood for up to a year after using accutane. I waited a year before getting pregnant to be safe. Speak to your Dr to be safe!"

what happens to a girl if she gets pregnant while on accutane? NO i'm not pregnant or plan to be for a long time, but i am curious about what they do with the women who do get pregnant on accutane? i know WHY you shouldn't, but my doctor and the website/ information booklet doesn't say what they do with these pregnant women... do they get into legal trouble? sued...fined? are they forced to get an abortion? would they do that while still on accutane? just curious.

hotmama replied: "I don't think you would get in any trouble... it's just SUPER important for the doctor to let you know what WILL happen if you do get pregnant while on it. I think it would be punishment enough if a woman got pregnant while on it... they would have to deal with the guilt and hardship of raising a child with so many disabilities all because they didn't listen to the doctor."

hachimachi replied: "The woman can't be forced to do anything. I am sure doctors would recommend going off accutane immediately, but nobody can force her to abort. Also, I am sure she would be notified of all the risks involved with conceiving while on accutane, and she will have to endure a lot of testing to check for birth defects."

I think to be on Accutane you have be on 2 form of bc and sign something and also have 2 neg. pregnancy tests within 1-3 months before starting it. They are pretty careful that you don't get pregnant on it as long as you follow the rules you should be fine."

I just took my last dosage of ACCUTANE 4 months ago and now discovered I am 1 month pregnant!? This was not planned. I was on the BC pill and we used the female polyurethane condom. I remember that I was never to get pregnant on Accutane but it has been 4 months (I conceived 3 months after I was off Accutane.) PLS HELP!

Kanami replied: "I took Accutane, but I was 12, so it didn't matter. It is HIGHLY suggested that you do NOT get pregnant while taking Accutane. Also, if you get off of it, it is smart to wait a month before planning to have a baby because even though you're off Accutane, it's still in your system."

Accutane can cause severe fetal abnormalities such as a small head, mental impairment, deformed or absent ears, heart defects, as well as cleft lip or palate. I would maybe even give it a year before you start trying. I'm sure it's worth the wait to make sure you have a healthy baby! =) As always...ask your doctor, he/she will know whats best for you. Jessica D replied: "Vitamin A at more than 2500UI can cause birth defects in babies. Accutane (or Roaccutane in some nations) contains a chemical with the equivalent of around 20,000UI of Vitamin A. If you're pregnant and taking Accutane, your baby will surely be deformed. Accutane takes MONTHS to fully metabolize out of the body, so if you fall pregnant quickly after finishing the drug, your baby is still at extreme risk. Abortion is the BEST solution."

pankaj replied: "If a woman becomes pregnant while taking the acne drug, her baby can suffer severe brain and heart defects, mental retardation and other abnormalities, even if the mother took only a small dose for a short period. Thats a risk for 30 days after stopping the drug, too. Isotretinoin is supposed to be for severe acne only, but it is widely acknowledged to be prescribed for more minor cases."

As far as getting an abortion goes, would you want to have a child with severe birth defects? Just use birth control and a condom or no sex."
