Prevacid Compounded Resource in Q&A
Is it okay to take Prilosec while waiting for Prevacid to "kick in"? My baby (6 wks old) was diagnosed with Reflux. He was on Prilosec compound for a couple of weeks, but we needed to change to Prevacid b/c of concerns over the compounded Prilosec's stability. I have read that you cannot take "too much" of a proton pump inhibitor. I have asked his pediatrician if it is okay to still give him *some* of the Prilosec while we are waiting the (up to) 2 weeks for the Prevacid to start working. He said, "I don't see why not". I want a better answer than that! Hope someone here knows! I UNDERSTAND you aren't Drs. I guess I should have written: has anyone else done this? I don't think it would HURT him from what I have found on the web and what the Ped said, but there seems to be many differing opinions (from how long it takes to work to what meds you can use together).

Lance replied: "WHOOOAAA! We aren't doctors!"

Stoptheinvasion replied: "Get another opinion from another physician. I would suggest to stop one in order to start another. This is a tiny baby were talking about here. I would want a better answer too."

1985 & going strong replied: "Contact your pharmacist. He should know as well, although he may still refer you back to your doctor. But give it a try. Also ask for the contraindications (contra-indications) sheet for each of the medicines. You may discover something about interaction there, although many pharmacies print this up & include it when they fill the prescription (usually not the complete list). The complete list is found in the original box the medication comes in, but the general public often has problems with medical terminology, so doctors and pharmacists prefer not to give it out, as this can lead to more questions, and more problems with patients or parents. I forgot to add (everyone gave great answers) that if you aren't completely satisfied with your pediatrician (or your own doctor for that matter), switch...It took me several indifferent doctors ( and quite a few years) before I found a pediatrician who listened to me, and anwered my questions without rushing me out the door to see the next patient. You can also visit the website for each of the meds. Hope this helps!"

replied: "The only answer I have is I have acid reflux disease also referred to as gerd (gastro esophageal reflux disease) and prevacid kicked right in and began working immediately for me so I'm rather surprised to hear that it takes 2 weeks. I would think it wiser to give the child the prevacid and watch it closely before administering the prilosec also. I"m no doctor though so it would be wise to ask your pharmacist this question also to be on the safe side. I agree your doctor could have given a better response to your question . Addition - below is a site at which you can check drug interactions yourself - see for yourself there are no drug interactions between prilosec and previcid so it would be safe to give the baby both. When you reach the page click I agree on the disclaimer and you will be directed the page that you can check drug interactions . Good luck this should calm your fears a bit . ."

Did anyone have their prevacid mixed at a compound pharmacy? Went to the ped today and they switched from zantac to prevacid and I heard it seems to work better ( my daughter is 4 weeks old). I went to my regular pharmacy and they said because it was a suspension it had to be compounded. SO i found one that did it and it has to be refrigerated. I read online that it should only last 14 days and then the symtoms come back but the bottle says it is a 30 day dose. Anyone else using this and is it working ok? The ped also told me to add rice cereal to her formula and wanted me to try nestle good start (currently on isomil). Does anyone else use this formula?

3rdXCharm replied: "no, it came in packets of granules that i can add to her drink or cereal. that was a few years ago, she's since outgrown her reflux."

asha replied: "i never treated my daughters acid reflux with meds. i chose to take the nutrition route. any pediatrician worth his weight in salt will tell you that solid foods help to keep the acid down. my daughter was on enfamil lipil, then enfamil gentlease (she slept thru the night after the first day), then nestle good start (no more sleeping thru the night), then gentlease again (still no sleeping thru) and now she is back to enfamil lipil. the good start was fine for her, but tended to get her constipated sometimes. she has been on cereal since 3 weeks old, we added 1 scoop to her 8 ounce bottle to start, then slowly added more as time went on, and used larger nipples. then, when she turned 2 months old, she started babyfood in her bottle, like a gross smoothie, lol... she never liked babyfood unless it was in the bubby, and now she eats her smoothie, the cereal, the formula, table-food, and all kinds of stuff, she is 9 months old. however, my only problem is that she still isnt sleeping thru, so im thinking of starting her on the medicine soon. if you have any questions, FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME!!"
