youought2knowme replied: "In the company literature (the paper with the microscopic print that comes with each bottle, unless the pharmacist throws it away), there will be a table of different reactions to Prozac compared to a placebo (sugar pill). Before you decide if you want to take it or not ask a pharmacist for that info or search it on the web. Best shrink I ever had said any person can have any reaction to any drug at any given time, it's all very individual. Lilly Co. who makes Prozac was originally trying to make a weight loss drug and found there is a greater market for it as an antidepressant. It's an excellent drug, but very powerful, get your psycho meds from a qualified psychiatrist not your 'family' doctor who generally knows nothing about psychotherapuetic drugs. I took Prozac for years and found that I tended to gain weight on it, although that is not the usual response, it's more common for people to lose weight. There are much more advanced, much gentler drugs these days for depression. If you want specifically a weight loss drug, there are new ones on the market. By all means, don't try to self diagnose and don't take any medication that isn't prescribed for you. Good luck."

Ikeg replied: "I don't know any thing about the scientific part of Prozac, but was on it for about a year I believe. Yes, Prozac, as a side affect of the medication, helped me to loose about 15 pounds at first. But I didn't do any thing like diet, cut down on my eating sweets, or any thing, so when my system got used to the medication I quit loosing, and then it was just like any antidepressant. However, I went off it because I started having problems with Prozac; he then put me on Zoloft,and that didn't do any thing for weight, but was good for the depression. But now I am on Wellbutrin, and it is known for weight loss, as a side affect. It is used quite successfully for people that want to quit smoking. I've lost 20 pounds now, but not sure if it is the Wellbutrin or not."

lynnjaney replied: "NO. I was on it and gained 20 lbs, however, for the first time in my life my symptoms were controlled. Everyone's body is different and you have to work with you Dr to find what is best for you. I changed to wellbutrin and have had great results...my weight is where it used to be, but I haven't Lost anything more."

Prozac and weight loss? I've been on Prozac for about 2 months now... I take a pill in the morning and 150mg of Wellbutrin in the afternoon. I've lost about 10 pounds over the last couple of months, but I haven't been eating well either and was feeling somewhat depressed. I'm doing much better emotionally and eating much better also. I'm only 100 pounds now and I've been hearing that Prozac can cause weight loss; even my doctor said that was a possiblity. Has anyone had weight loss or weight gain with Prozac, or Wellbutrin even? I've been on the Wellbutrin (was on twice daily before the Prozac) for 3 years and I don't think it has any affect on my weight at all. Thanks.

If you feel you are losing too much weight, maybe you can start drinking something like Ensure or another high calorie drink once a day between meals? I hope things work out. take care"

sdg-FNP replied: "I prescribe both of these medications quite often. Typically, most people will actually GAIN weight on Prozac. It is a common class effect of SSRIs, and is often why we will choose it for people with eating disorders. On the other hand, Wellbutrin typically has the opposite effect, and can either be weight-neutral, or increase weight loss in most people. Depression can add to peoples' malnutrition, or lack of adequate intake. This is common, and most likely the reason you've lost this weight. If you're considered "underweight," then you might want to talk with your prescriber about a med change, or increasing the dose. All the best to you! :)"

Alex62 replied: "Weight loss is a potential side effect, although more people tend to gain weight. Wellbutrin is the one with a bigger weight loss side effect, but since you were on it before without a problem, it alone is not apt to be the culprit. If you are also still battling depression, perhaps talk to your do about trying something else. Either that, or really focus on your diet and put some more healthy caloric foods back in it."

kckmellons replied: "it could be the combo of the two meds that could be making you lose your appitite or it could be that you are feeling better and are more active that can make you drop weight. i know that wellbutrin can make you lose weight. i don't know about prozac. however i take klonopin and effexor and i have noticed that my appitite has deminished a little as well. it you are concerned talk to your dr and see what they have to say. they may not want you losing a lot of weight. and maybe the dr can help you with some diet ideas or maybe change your meds if you are still depressed as you said. hope that this helps"

sweets replied: "I know wellbutrin can definetly cause weight loss. But if u have been on it for 3 years prior to the prozac and did not experience weight loss, then it probably is the prozac. Everyone experiences different effects from antidepressants, i take celexa 20 mg and lost a lil bit of weight, as others gain.It just depends on the person. If weight loss becomes a major issue with you though, u may want to talk to ur doc about getting on a different one that dont cause u to lose weight, u said u weigh 100 pounds, that is pretty small, u prob dont want to lose anymore."

Aidens_Granny replied: "I gained 13 lbs when I was on Prozac. I only took it for 5 weeks. Don't recall any weight issues with Wellbutrin though. Both of these meds however, made me suicidal and extremely angry feeling. Everyone is different. While one med may be a godsend for some, it may be a major disaster for others."

Does Fluoxetine (Prozac) more commonly make you gain or lose weight? I would really like to know if Fluoxetine (Prozac) is more common in older teenagers to cause weight loss or weight gain. I understand it is an appetite supressant, but does it mess with your metabolism at all? PLEASE only answer if you know and don't B.S. crap. My doctor spesifically told me the weight gain is neutral. So i don't want your opinion unless you've been on it, or you're employeed medically.

Tricia replied: "The statistics most often quoted are 1/3 gain, 1/3 lose, 1/3 stay the same. Most folks gain 3 to 5 pounds. Watch out for cravings for carbs. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables and increase your activity."

dmbdreamgrl replied: "I have tried Wellbutrin, Paxil, PaxilCR, and Lexapro. Lexapro did not cause me to gain any weight. I gained about 10lbs on Paxil. Honestly, it might just be that the medicine is working and you're getting better. I know when I'm in one of my anxious times, i lose weight b/c I'm nervous or stressed. I honestly like Lexapro a lot. Paxil made me numb to everything. I don't even think I could have cried on Paxil ( i mean cry as in watching the Notebook or Lifetime Movie Network all day.. the crying that isn't that big of a deal) I was basically a zombie. When I got off of Paxil and on Lexapro I went on a diet for sure b/c the weight didn't just fall off. If you want to lose weight then cut back on the food your eating or change the types of food. I love this site it has every restaurant's calories (we go out a lot) I lost 20lbs in 5 months by just staying on a 1300 cal/day diet. I ate whatever I wanted as long as it was under that amount. Good luck. Sometimes it sucks to be a woman, we gain weight if we take a tylenol! haha."

In the general publics opinion, does Effexor cause weight gain or loss? I am about to begin Effexor and am weaning off of Prozac. I've done my homework in regards to the information pamphlet and contraindiciation/side effects but what do real people who have taken Effexor think?
