How do you know when to get off zoloft? I've been taking zoloft for about a year. My anxiety isn't major, I don't have panic attacks or anything like that. I'm just afraid of like, groups of people and get a little tense. I know zoloft doesn't cure anxiety but just hides it. I've been going to a psychologist for a year also but I don't have any money left so I can't go anymore. I think I'm ready to stop taking it and i know to get off it slowly. Is this a good reason to get off it?

time to rise, time to shine replied: "If it is working it can last after you stop taking it. They say 6 to 12 months after you are sure you are feeling better slowly discontinue."

lillian.klasc replied: "You don't know when to get off it. Only a doctor can decide when to reduce or ween you off your medication. The reason why you feel so good is because the Zoloft is helping you deal with your anxiety. You will regret it if you go off the Zoloft yourself. After a few months, all that anxiety that you thought was gone will be back at full strength and then you'll be right back to square one. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better though. Enjoy the feeling and keep taking your meds!"

retro1312 replied: "I actually had the same issue as you. No panic attacks or anything just anxiety towards groups and things of that nature. I stopped taking my zoloft about a month and a half ago because I ran out of money to keep seeing my doctor. I am regretting it now. I never thought that I had depression before but now I am seeing the difference of how I felt on Zoloft and how I feel now. I can see myself becoming less social and feeling more down."

Zoloft???? Ive been on so many difrent antidepressants my whole life. The past year Ive been taking 150mg of Zoloft. Its the only med that has sorta not rlly at all helped me. It rlly just held all my emotions in n turned me into a zombie but until recently Ive decided I dont want 2 b on them anymore so Ive been secretly weaning myself off them. I was on 100mg 4 bout a week n a half n then 50mgs 4 about 3 weeks until I ran out. Its been bout 5 days that Ive been completely off them n I feel prettii good actually. I feel like my true self. I feel more open with ppl n I have my emotions back. My painting has even gotten better 4 awhile I had artist block. The only drawback is I get sorta moody every 1ce in awhile n I cant rlly control my anger after my lil hissy fits r ova I get upset with myself 4 getin angry 4 no reason at all. Also I rlly dont have n appetite well its weird ill b sorta hungry like my stomach will tell me I need food but when I eat I just feel sick n dont want it. Is this normal?

missyv7 replied: "i loved it when i got off abilify and trileptal and whatever else they put me on when they locked me in a teen "pysch ward" twice..more like a prison. they try to medicate everything today..."

Cookie replied: "I was thinking about going on this. I think everything you're describing is pretty normal. How was your appetite when you were taking the Zoloft? Is it good for weight loss?"

_BSB*rox_ replied: "OK, I've been through the same thing you have.I took every anti-depressant on the planet and they never really worked too well. Especially zoloft. One of the reasons may be that you could be bipolar or have a personality disorder. Meds like that don't work for people that are bipolar or have a similar chemical imbalance. A mood stabilizer would do you better. Unfortunately, a lot of doctors aren't educated enough on personality disorders or bipolar disorder. You don't have to be manic to be bipolar. THere are many different levels. Look those 2 up! I swear!"

EMcG replied: "this is a reaction to being off the medication. Have you tried wellbutrim? It is known to have less side effects than zoloft for some people so you can get help with the mood swings and depression without exactly feeling like a zombie,"

LOVES IT! replied: "That's the thing about mental illness...You feel great while taking them and think "I can do this without them" and quit taking them, then eventually your emotions get all out of whack again(even if you feel fine for a month, because it takes a while for the medication to completely leave your system). You will then have to restabilize yourself on your medication and start to feel "normal and fine" again, and try to quit. Mental illness can play cruel jokes on you, as it plays with your judgement ability and you think you're ok. If your doctor has assessed your condition and thinks you need to be on it, please, for your health, continue to use it until your next doctors appt. Then you can talk to him about maybe switching, or lowering your dosage. Good luck to you, and remember, your health is the most important thing in your life."

Does Zoloft kill your sex drive and is it worth taking for PMDD? I have severe PMDD and it sucks.. I heard this is somthing people take for PMDD~ I go to the doctor Friday and want to talk about possibly taking this or a generic~ As well what is a good dosage for this to help.. any one who takes this for that reason please give me any info! thanks!

c replied: "It did effect my sex drive a bit. I found that it took longer for me to get in the mood. It also took longer to orgasm. It was like I was on the brink and couldn't. Taking Zoloft and relieving the horrible symptoms of PPMD was worth it to me though. I took 100mg and tapered down to 50 after a few years. I am off it now and occasionally feel the PPMD coming back stronger than when I was on the medication. I am considering going back on it."

hoping to find more info replied: "Are you on birth control? Talk to your doctor about switching or starting Yaz (bc) as it helps with PMDD. Antidepressant can affect your sex drive."

Victoria L replied: "it never affected my sex drive. however do not take the generic, its not the same. the generic has issues with its time release and does not release properly and will really mess you up. i tried it for not even a whole month and had to stop and go back to zoloft. it made feel dizzy all the time"

Wee D replied: "The first thing you need to do is figure out why your sex drive is low and try to help get it back. I was in your situation and it's not fun without being horny and feeling in the mood when needed. I also felt like my orgasms (if I would even get one) were really weak. Probably because of my sex drive. However, I tried exercising and dieting but nothing seemed to be working. I thought I was screwed. I then found something just as amazing as the vibrator. My friend at work told me about this stuff she took to raise her sex drive. It was a natural herbal supplement and was I lucky to of found it. Theres no side effects and the sex drive is just tremendous along with orgasms that are blasting. The stuff is called Hersolution pills. At the time I saved money on them at herenhancement.com What I did was tried out for 3 months and that was really it. I found taking them every other day or so was the best to stretch it out. After the months were up, I was back to normal with a beating sex drive and my orgasm strength in increased so much. Well good luck and I hope this helps."

Taking Zoloft and St Johns together to help with anxiety? Ok I'm a 19 year old who still has not gotten her licenses..... i just turned 19 the 29 of july. Im in college now and i have to get my licenses next monday. I was just put on zoloft for anxiety and i was wonderng could i combine that with St Johns Wart wouldnt that make my anxiety better?? Well the reason i have not gotten my liences is because im scared to death of people ( i didnt even walk in graduation) but i can drive. The whole fact of someone i dont know sitting next to me in a car sit of a car that is not even mine( my sisters ) and having them tell me what to do is going to make me have a panic attack..... HELP !!

Jon replied: "Do NOT take Zoloft, Paxil, or any of those drugs put out to help you anxiety. Paxil was used for a few years and it wasnt until AFTER people realized it was making people commit suicide was it removed. There are many alternatives to overcoming your fears and phobias that don't require medication... and if you want to take a pill or supplement, try a health food store. Can't go wrong with herbs. Good luck. :)"

Brainbabe replied: "You should NEVER mix the St. John's Wort with any anti-depressant with SJW...you need to see your doctor to perhaps change your meds...you can take several different classes of drugs for anxiety and depression... Buspirone (generic for BuSpar) is a good anti-anxiety medication...please stop the herbal drug, continue the prescription and get an appointment for the dr. Since you are in college, you should have access to mental health care. It could really help you to have a few sessions with a therapist/counselor. That person could help you figure out why you have anxiety attacks, and perhaps help you learn to relax and eliminate the problem. Relax on the driving tesf--you are just another number to them...whoever goes out with you won't even remember you by the end of the day. The worst thing that could happen is you would have to take the test again...and my poor mom took it 4 times when we were small kids--she said my dad and all 4 of us sat on the sidewalk and watched her drive off 4 different days before she got her license! Good luck!"

should I take zoloft? This question is probably going to piss a lot of people off..but heads up I by no means want that at all, those are not my intentions. So way back when my moms doctor prescribed her zoloft because she was stressed, but she never took them. Well I have lately been super stressed and really really really depressed... she still has the zoloft...and i kind of want to try it. I know I know, it sounds stupid. But I'm wondering[/hoping] that it will help me. but ive also heard that people can become dependant on them, and also that it causes weight gain? I think I just want to take them as a good reason to not hurt myself or someone else you know.. idk this is a ridiculous question, i dont even know what im asking well im 19. Honestly, I don't trust people, it's something that I can't help. I'll never go to the doctor or a counselor/therapist or anything like that for help. I guess that's not good, but obviously something is going on with me. More than likely I won't end up trying it because I'm too afraid of becoming dependant on it. I also doubt they work just from hearsay.

rtperry2 replied: "You shouldn't take other people's prescription medication; it could have unforseen side effects that land you in the hospital, or worse. The best thing you could do is see a counselor or therapist. If your mom has issues with depression, it may be a genetic predisposition -- and anyway, if you take your mom's zoloft, what do you do when you run out? Please see a counselor or therapist -- the counselor at school is a good start."

kritten replied: "Well, zoloft doesn't just instantly make you happy. You have to take it every day for 6-8 weeks to start seeing results. Your mom probably has a 30 day supply. Maybe, you'll get lucky and actually start seeing results just in time to run out and go through withdrawal. How old are you? Are you aware of the fact that anti-depressants have been shown to drastically increase the chances of suicide in adolescents? What happens if you start taking them and you end up being severely allergic? What if a medication you are already taking interacts with zoloft? If you are seriously depressed, you should go to the doctor yourself and not rely on someone else's meds."

I am taking zoloft, welbutrin, ambien and xanax....? I feel like I can think better and its only been a few days. Is this even possible... or is it just in my head. I feel like i can reason and think better. what do you think??? thanks

gigglesrfree replied: "Right now you're feeling the effects of the xanax, it's immediate. Also, the ambien is helping you relax to sleep, with good rest, you usually feel better. The zoloft and welbutrin haven't built up in your bloodstream yet to their peak efficiency. Takes different times for different people, average 2-3 wks before you start feeling the best effect. After saying that, let me also say I think it's great that you feel better already. Of course it's all in your head....haha, really though, believing the meds will help goes a long way to a good outcome. Best of luck to you."

phillip b replied: "better you read this carefully There are a few very important points that I would like to cover on the subject of drugs and research and treatment At present the system in England and much of the western world is this , all treatment recommended by the doctors should be tested and approved and quite rightly so. Obviously it costs vast sums of money to test and approve treatments because of the possible damage to people and the subsequent litigation costing millions of pounds. The point is this Where does this money come from to test and approve treatments? By far the biggest source is the drug companies. So take for example a researcher might go along to his local drug company and tell them his findings about this treatment he has been working on which is of outstanding value but needs testing further or approving, you might think they would be falling over themselves to know more right, you could not be more wrong. By and large only and I mean only treatments, which show the promise of good deal of a profit, will even get examined. Because they are in business to make a profit, not for serving the people. So many of the thousands of therapies which they see as having no profit potential do not get approved and thus by and large do not get recommended by your local doctor or hospital. You wont hear a word about them from your doctor in the main Despite The fact that some of them do have overwhelming benefits some, which have saved needless operations, needless amputations, needless pain and trauma, needless kidney failures and much loss of life. This will apply to any country where most research is being done by drug companies they would probably laugh in your face if you went there with a promising therapy which was so cheap anyone could get it. Do you really think they would invest thousands of pounds in any therapy which did not show the promise of good profit. Your local G.P/ doctor is not a researcher, do you clearly understand that in the main he is told what to prescribe . he does not even have the time often to look at research. In fact some G.P .s doctors have had action taken against them for prescribing simple supplements. They are in a difficult position in a way many would like to prescribe many different therapies but many feel they cannot for action could be taken against them. This does not help you does it though. In 2004 approx 5000 Beds are being taken up by people in the UK who have had adverse reactions to drugs. Some will die others will be maimed .A serious amount of suffering is taking place on a scale that makes some wars look like a minor infringement. That is a fact So Mr/Mrs patient in 99% of the time because of this system you will probably only get recommended drugs. Primarily because of deliberate government policy not to fund research into other therapies. Have you heard your local doctor recommend, Massage, Spiritual healing, Knieisiology Herbs, Light therapy, Colour therapy, Regression therapy, Osteopathy, Zappers, Magnetic devices, Electrical Frequency devices.has he mentioned detoxing , reiki, massage, colonics, enemas, sweat baths , accupuncture, tai chi, yoga, hypnosis.not to mention castor oil packs epsum salt packs etc etc. Has he ever mentioned the power of nutrition what you eat how much protein, carbo, vitamins, water you take in etc. Has he ever recommended a detox .. All of these have shown their inherent worth with thousands if not millions of testimonials. As you can see this system in its present state is inherently flawed, and is criminally negligent Until the day comes when most of the research and testing is done by an agency with no vested interests attached and a very clear agenda of being objective. Acting for the people. Printing and revealing all results good and bad. What also clouds the issue further is the fact that some of these drugs work well but that is not to say that there isnt something more natural better. Moving on to a more positive note .One of the biggest problems we see when giving this material is that a lot of people do not have good evaluation skills. They rely on a white coat, a hospital building, the sound of a persons voice to sway their thinking into accepting treatments when they are ill. Like lambs they are taken down so called drug healing paths some of which will lead them into untold suffering . Of course this is what some of these drug companies rely on the vast sums of money which can be generated are enormous. So as the wise among you will see a little investment in time over your health could be a very wise move indeed. So what do we recommend ---well we get very beneficial results doing these therapies .i am writing a book on this subject but here is the general principles Depression protocol Hi well I do quite a bit of research and practice the art of healing , my research"

What's wrong with my boyfriend - Zoloft withdrawal - what to do now? Sorry, this is going to be a little bit of a long question. Serious answers only please and do not recommend we break up - we live together and have a long-term relationship and I am committed to him. Starting about 8 months ago he was having a lot of issues with anger, so he started seeing a therapist. It made an immediate difference and his outbursts were significantly lessened and happened less frequently (about once every 10 days vs. every 2-3 days). And we grew much closer and more secure as a couple to the point he said he wanted to be together forever (something he has never said before). Thinking this wasn't enough progress (after about 3-4 sessions) the therapist recommended he take zoloft. A few weeks later we had one of our worst fights ever and on a day to day basis he was much more jittery and had mood swings where he was super excited then super unhappy at the drop of a hat. When his prescription ran out he just stopped taking it cold turkey because we both decided it was doing nothing positive and the doctor said there would be no side effects (something a little research revealed to be completely untrue). Now a week and a half after stopping the drug we had a big fight and he broke up with me, then agreed to try again. But now it's been about two days and he says he is scared and confused. He is moody and jumpy and doesn't want to do anything - even things he loves. His thinking is off the wall irrational and he won't hear reason about anything that I say or do. Is this Zoloft withdrawal? Do you think he should start on another med or just get through it? Did we just make a mistake by trying zoloft? What can/should I do for him while he is getting through this - he is snappy even towards positive gestures? Do you recommend any alternatives to zoloft that may have better results? I was thinking of trying him on L-Glutamine and B vitamins? Any serious suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Thanks so much for the answers provided. We DO know the cause of his anger (childhood issues) and that is what he is working through with the therapist and that's the point where we were seeing huge progress. As soon as the drug started he went downhill and now he says he "can't" control his behavior and mood swings and I believe it is drug withdrawal as he was trying and making progress before all this drug business.

lonely replied: "firstly i have to say congratulations and well done for sticking by him, without you his issues would be 1000 times worse, i am sure that the outbursts, moods, arguements are not directed at you, it will be frustration. I have suffered with mental issues myself and at the moment am going through hell, its a very dark place and the frustration, anger and everything inside you makes you so much different, personally for myself it is like someone flicks a switch in my brain and i become someone completely different. Go back to the professionals and ask them for advice is what i recommend and maybe even some counselling for both of you."

wellness5 replied: "Well done for staying with him - you must be a very fine person. I admire you. Going off Zoloft cold turkey is a bit risky and I think you are seeing some of the results. I know that natural ways to treat depression can be very effective and the side effects are often much less severe. It might be worth a try. I know that in Germany, a herb called St. John'sWort is prescribed for 50% of patients with depression while only about 2% are put on Prozac. This is also one of the ingredients in the remedy contained in the link below but you would need a doctor's advice really. Good luck and I hope all the anger will fade away and you will be happy again."

saj1986 replied: "Zoloft is a psychotropic drug that can affect a person's brain in numerous and unpredictable ways. Quitting a powerful drug like Zoloft cold-turkey, can indeed lead to withdrawal symptoms and unusual thoughts, words, and behaviors. Medications like this should not be just stopped; they should be tappered down over a period of time with smaller and smaller dosage to minimize any withdrawal like symptoms. By this point, though, he should probably just keep with the decision to quit it all at once. Zoloft can stay in your system for weeks, but, usually, withdrawal symptoms subside after a couple weeks. I've never heard of Zoloft being used to treat anger issues. It's an anti-depressant. It can be a drug that mellows a person out, so they may lack the energy or will to express anger or frustration. But, I'm assuming the doctor prescribed it with good reason. His anger issues got better, for a while, so that means he can control them. But, he has to want to. If having you in his life isn't the only reason he needs to control his anger issues, then, perhaps, you should reconsider your relationship, or, at least try to find out why he is so angry. Outbursts of anger usually have an underlying reason behind them that may be completely unrelated to what he seems to be angry about at the moment. You say that you "can't" break-up. All options must be on the table, though. Just because a relationship has lasted a long time, doesn't mean you should feel like you can't dissolve it if it's not what you want, anymore. While you may feel committed to him, you have to be committed to yourself, first, before you can really help him or figure out the best way to deal with this for you and him. Of course, he'll slip up, but, if you really look, you'll be able to see if he really is trying or just trying to make you think he's trying. You should ask specifically why the drug was prescribed before deciding whether or not and what type of other drugs should be considered here."

is there any real reason to worry about zoloft? is there any real reason to worry about zoloft. i have taken it before for a little anxiety from work. now 8yrs later i am back on it for severe anxiety. i have been on it for 8wks today and do really feel better. i think i gave myself ocd because of freaking out over the killing your self warning. i worry about that every day. no i don't feel like that i am just afraid something will snap and i will go crazy. is this severe anxiety are just me being silly and need to let it work oooops left this out. i am on 75mg just upped it last thursday thank you to all that responded. like i said i am not thinking about doing anything to myself at all i just get really freaked out and scared about all of it. i was terrified it would make me feel that way so that is all that goes through my head is that it causes it. i am feeling better like i said i just upped my dose to 75mg so i guess it makes anxiety a little more during the upping dose time.

tattooraven1 replied: "don't worry about it, if it makes you feel better, then take it."

M L replied: "If it's been working for YOU, than that's what's important. Don't worry about what You hear with others, as everyone reacts to Meds differently."

mmn77 replied: "Zoloft is the mildest anti-depressant, i've been told. I think those stories of pp going "crazy" on zoloft are turned around....the person had a mental illness, and that's why they went "crazy", not because of the zoloft. That JUST my opinion tho, so im not for sure. I take zoloft and i like it, it helps me alot. God bless! :)"

garyomega replied: "Interestingly, for some people, myself included, find that Zoloft INCREASES anxiety. It is a well documented fact, but not widely known. I have been taking 200 MG of Zoloft for over four years now, and strange again, the INCREASE to 200 DECREASED the anxiety....go figure.I supplement with Xanax 1mg when I feel a panic attack coming. Statistics show that people taking anti-depressants have a higher suicide rate than the general public. What they fail to mention, is people with mental illness are far more likely to consider/commit suicide than the general public with or without meds. Relax. But constant thoughts of suicide are proof that you are on the wrong medications, and/or the wrong dosages. Talk it over with your mental health worker. good luck to you. I hope you feel better soon."

Y G replied: "Im on 50 and I noticed increased anxiety the first week. I stuck with it because I heard it was one of the safer ones for breastfeeding. Ive only been on for 2 weeks and this morning I woke up feeling extra depressed. I think it made it worse because like you,,, Im so freaked out by it and I keep thinking its gonna turn me into a homocidal maniac.. I know... Its ridiculous... but those warnings scared me too. Anyhow, after my extra depressing morning.. ive actually had a decent day. My doc said that as the meds are adjusting in my body... it might get worse before better... but I dont think we'll "lose it" but i understand your fears!!"

Should I tell my new BF why I'm on Zoloft? I was taking my meds last nite and he asked what they were. I told ? him they were my heart meds and Zoloft (antidepressant). He was a tad freaked about the Zoloft. I told him I'd gone thru something really tough and couldn't handle it on my own, which is why I needed the Zoloft. The real reason was that I was "seeing" a guy who lied to me, strung me along and was seeing someone else. I was devastated and...suicidal. My doc rec'd I go to a mental hospital, I was so messed up! I can't BELIEVE I let some dude affect me like that...But I'm better now. Should I tell my new BF (of 2 months)? Or are some things better left unsaid?

edoses replied: "I think that in this situation that would be better left unsaid. I take Zoloft as well, for Social Anxiety, when I told my boyfriend he was scared and wanted to know if that was 'really bad' but after I explained to him that I just get nervous with a lot of people around if I am by myself and that I get migraines from stress and worry and the meds would help, he was okay with it. So he most likely just wants to make sure you are ok you know? I think it Might scare him if he knew the reason, but it really will not hurt not to tell him. Good Luck girl!"

mikka replied: "yea i think you should ive had allot of problems to and it helps to tell the truth and not keep it bottled up and lie beacuse he is bound to find out any way so let it be you who tells him and so he dont think you are a lier and wont want 2 date you any more"

i don't know if taking zoloft is a good idea? My doctor prescribed zoloft for my depression/anxiety. She knows that i have a binging problem (i binge uncontrollably once a week) and a preoccupation with staying thin and eating controlled portions. She says that antidepressants will most likely take away my binging spells. i'm just worried b/c i've heard that zoloft makes some ppl gain weight and increases appetite. even though the medical literature says that on average people lost weight on zoloft, online testimonies seem to say otherwise. I took half a pill once but now i'm scared to continue taking it. i'm 21. i'm looking for reasons to think i might not REALLY be depressed. do you know of any long term effects that zoloft can have on my body? i'm young and i don't want to screw up my body if i don't absolutely need to. i heard that paxil slows down the metabolism after prolonged use. does zoloft do anything similar?

vaughn favrua replied: "it was 50/50 for me. it made my anxiety a little bit better but also made me grumpy and moody. try it. you never know cause people react to meds differently.i accually let people around me know how much and what im taking so they can see how im doing. monitor me"

pain.in.the replied: "I didn't like zoloft and quit taking it after a week. It relieved my anxiety, but I felt like my mood and personality were being controlled by the drug rather than myself and I didn't like it. If you're really determined to get out of your funk, helping yourself works best. For me, a set diet and exercise program does the trick. I know you binge-eat, but trust me there is going to be no better feeling than controlling that on your own. Good luck!"

a cup of joe replied: ""i'm young and i don't want to screw up my body if i don't absolutely need to" Friend, you are already beginning a destructive process on your body by binging. Medications affect people differently but I would suggest listening to what your doctor tells you. Medications don't necessarily cause weight gain. Increased appetite can be a side effect, but it's usually in a small number of people. If you notice your appetite seems to increase or decrease, tell your doctor....in the meantime, I would stick to your medication regiment so you begin the journey of starting to feel a little better. The good news is that if this medication doesn't help you, there are others that may. Keep on the path to healing!"

thorn105 replied: "Medication affects everyone differently. Your doctor feels that the benefits you will get from taking the zoloft far outweigh the potential side effects. If they are very bothersome, tell your doctor, and I am sure she will modify your dosage, or try something else. You see, that is the thing for us people with a chemical imbalance in our brain. Not even the doctors know for sure what will and won't work for us, and they often have to try different medications to get the desired effects. Just keep in mind that you have every right to explanations, or different forms of treatment. Stop thinking about your weight and metabolism right now. That is the problem you are being treated for in the first place, is it not? I've used both in the past, lost weight on zoloft, and no weight change on paxil."

theanalyzer99 replied: "Zoloft has been around for quite a while and is a relatively safe choice of med. Zoloft is not typical in causing weight gain like many other psychotropic meds do. You may notice an increase in weight because you have stopped the behaviors that your doctor prescribed it for (i.e.; binging). Actually, a lot of people describe loss of appetite and nausea when they first begin Zoloft. Re: Paxil: this is a med that you are not supposed to start and stop. It can have some "withdraw" effects if you have been on it for a bit and then cold-turkey it and stop. Best person to talk to is your prescriber. Also, meds alone are not the solution to eating disorders. Some type of behavior modification and support group skills will help and maybe after you begin to see success with your problem then you may not need the Zoloft anymore. A habit, whether it be bad or good, takes a while to develop. The same thing with recovery. Add something positive to the negative you are taking away and hopefully within a month you will be conditioned to continue doing that positive thing/action."

Cait C replied: "I take zoloft... it hasnt done anything like that. except for the fact that it doesnt work anymore. it works for awhile. but it recently doesnt do anything."
