Requip Medicine in Q&A
Fibromyalgia and the medicine Requip or Nerve Stimulators? I was wondering if and how much the medicine Requip could help with fibromyalgia? At first my dr. said I had rls (this was like 10 years ago) and then about a year after that he said I had fibromyalgia. I've since (in the past 9 years) been in 4 clinical studies and I deffinentally do have fibromyalgia. Does anyone take requip for it, and if so, how are you symtoms as opposed to before you started taking it? Have you had any thoughts on the disadvantages of taking the medication? At this point, I'm ready to chop my arms and legs off because the pain is SO bad. I have SERIOUSLY spoken with my doctor about getting nerve stimulators put into my legs and arms (such as the spinal stimulator that my husband has for his back-- Hes had 8 back surgeries with his problems getting worse now) Does anyone use any type of electronic (pulsing) nerve stimulators? I've tried the medication neurontin and didnt help! sadly! Any thoughts? Wow, I was really hoping to get more responses to this question. :(

icesk8er replied: "I have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS aka RSD). A lot of people describe the pain of CRPS like Fibromyalgia even though I do know that it is somewhat different. I have never taken Requip for my pain, but I do know that it's a medication used for RLS, not usually for pain. I do have a Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) for my CRPS which helps me get a lot of pain relief. I have about 75%-80% pain relief with my SCS, and I do think that they can work very well. I think it would be worth trying a trial and seeing if it helps. You can check more out at I would probably recommend the SCS because it uses no medication to give you pain relief which means that you don't have to deal with the side effects of medications. The medications side effects usually seem to be bad enough for me that most of them aren't worth taking, but sometimes it's how you have to get by. Good luck!"

sbogie71 replied: "No, I have not taken Requip for Fibro. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia about 2 years ago. I am in a clinical study for Fibro. The drug is called Milnacipran and it is helping me. You might want to try locating a clinical study offering this drug near you."

Cookie Lee Jewelry Consultant replied: "The best spinal cord stimulator is medtronics we have used both Bionics and ANS and our dr does not like them But try Lyrica 1st alot of patients here were on neurontin with no help but Lyrica has helped them alot ask your dr about it. I heard it does miracles"

What's Cooking? replied: "I use a TENS unit It distracts from the pain but doesn't make it go away. I have a friend who claims it makes her pain go away, but it doesn't work that way for me. But it sounds like you're not talking about TENS units but rather spinal implant nerve stimulators, that is a totally different thing - And something I don't know anythign about, but am very interested in since I have chronic, unrelenting pain that narcotic pain meds don't significantly reduce (or when they do, the side effects are too awful to function). DEFINITELY see a pain management specialist or anesthesiologist, they are knowledgeable about these new technologies and can help you figure out if it will work. mikki_doo replied: "The best thing you can do is eat a whole foods, plant based diet. (Or at least mostly vegetarian) No, I am not kidding. Your body is rebelling right now, and one thing you can do for it, is give it what it really needs. This strange disease is almost nonexistent in other countries. Why? Because they eat more fruit & vegetables, more whole grains, and less meat/dairy. Has it occured to you that what you are experiencing could be due to something as simple as food allergies? Go see a Naturopathic Physician and have an allergy test done. (they use a stress test not the needles that an allopathic physician does) Also, some really good reading material in regards to diet/disease is "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell Good luck"

rsddebbie replied: "nerve stimulators are great while they are on but when u stop them the pain returns. I have found that having a similiar illness to u nothing in tablet form nor pulsing nerve stimulators work for any long period of time... Fibromyalia i find loves a bath with epsom salts then a really understanding partner vitamin e cream then a full body massage.DO THIS JUST BEFORE RETIRING FOR THE EVENING.....followed by a warm cup of hot chocy ..."

I know everyone's different but I need advice.

Newt 3 replied: "This sounds more like a drug interaction with requip and effexor."

tova4me replied: "These are great questions you are asking. There are many factors that come into play here. I could give you answers, but only your prescriber knows you, your medications, and your particular set of circumstances. You said it yourself; Everyone's different. Please call his office before your symptoms worsen."

sports_queen2505 replied: "If those side effects are happening then stop using it!"

Folksummer replied: "yah man that shit really fucks you up"

Is is ok to take Requip with Topamax? I'm taking topamax which is an anti-seizure medicine in the morning and at bedtime and I would like to take my requip as prescribed at bedtime with it but I'm fearfull of the side effects. I was wondering if anyone is taking the same combination of meds? If so can you give me some feedback on it. Thank you for your in put.

Melissa Y replied: "call poison control or your pharmacist and they'll tell you."

sadiebaby_1_2_3 replied: "I don't know about the combination...but I just wanted to warn you about side effects of topomax. My daughter lost almost 30 pounds while on this medication for headaches. She had noooooo appetite at all. She was never hungry. Although some people consider this a "good" side effect, it was not the purpose of the medication and it caused our family alot of worry until we figured out what it was. Good Luck!"

lennienahra replied: "Web md has a wealth of medical info. Go there! Or better yet, Ask your Dr."

how young can you be to start requip? RLS runs in my family and now my 10 year old nephew is having problems with it but the doctor he sees says he is to young to take medication for it so I was wondering if anyone this age or about this age is taking requip. I know my son had trouble sitting in school for years and the doctors then kept telling us it was growing pain. Now he takes medicine for it also and what a difference it has made.

huggz replied: "I have done a lot of searching on this to make sure I gave you accurate info. I cannot find any age specified for taking the drug. the main problem seems to be that it has never been tested on children so most doctors will not prescribe it for them. There is also the fact that the drug interferes with the dopamine produced in the brain and can cause drowsiness or dizziness."

Problems with requip for my restless legs syndrome? I was diagonosed with rls and have been taking requip for it. I do not like this medicine as I don't wish to take a pill every day whether I am having symptoms or not. Before taking the medication I didn't have symptoms every night and I was wondering if anyone out there with a less severe form of RLS had any suggestions for other treatment options that I can discuss with my doctor. Thanks.

poutine replied: "I remembered my husband's Dad being prescribed Vitamin E. Now that my husband's got jerky legs in bed, I remembered and feed him 400 Mg.Vitamin E daily, and it's gone."

Yer Mom replied: "my mom has severe RLS and takes a high dose of Klonipin. I started presenting symptoms as well years ago and they prescribed me a WAY lower does AS NEEDED at bedtime. I decided in using the over the counter "Restless Leg" Tablets found at most drug stores instead due to the risk of dependancy of the Klonipin and that my RLS was not too severe. There are also other meds like Neurontin that deals with nerve disorders, but I havent heard them directly being used for RLS. Also, stay away from antihistamines, or use as needed, as they have a tendancy to trigger a RLS flare-up day or night... Good Luck!"

I suffer with leg and knee pain? I have alot of pain in my legs and knees, feels like creepy carwlers and annoying tingling feeling,I have been to the doctor and was put on the medicine called Requip.I took it for awhile and it didn't do the trick. Please help!

gillianprowe replied: "I suggest you return to the Doc and explain the medication did not work and perhaps he might do some follow up tests?"

Chipmonk replied: "Ask your Doctor is you are a candidate for a TENS machine."

LadyLynn replied: "Tell your doctor you want Mirapex instead. It's new, and also for RLS. You can just call the nurse and have them send it in to your pharmacy. Good luck, Sweetie! :)"

Does anyone have any remedies for restless leg syndrome besides medicine.? I have it really bad and I take requip but sometimes it does not help. I am looking for some relief and doctors dont have a cure.

smiley replied: "I get RLS once in a while. If I exercize enough during the day, such as taking a brisk walk, I don't seem to have any problems at night."

LTD replied: "Requip has been a Godsend to me...I have suffered from it for years...and it didn't have a "name" years ago... Try uping your dosage...it's what I had to do...(I am now on 10 mg) AND add Yoga...(the stretching seems to help, some...).."

Hope replied: "Keeping my stress level low and not getting to tired seem to have helped. Mine was initiated as a drug side effect - I stopped the drug, but the leg-jerking continued."

candy licker replied: "Try drinking seltzer water. I drink a glass every night before bed. Thats seems to help me!"

butterflyboussas replied: "Hi!! Had this problem in my pre-teen yrs & the pain was so intense it would wake me up in the night. These days I don't find it occurring as much. Anyhoo searched online & found that although there is no known cause for this or cure @ this time the site did say this: Minimizing stress and promoting muscle relaxation are often helpful in reducing episodes of restless leg syndrome. Warm baths, gentle stretching exercises, massage or similar techniques may promote muscle relaxation. Best Wishes that these suggestions aid in the reduction of your pain. :) lavender is a soothing herb for baths/muscle soaks it works wonders for babies. Check out Cleo Active this might work 4 U as well :)"

For all you professional hairdressers out there: will any particular medicines affect my hair/getting a perm? I have always had baby fine hair which has thinned out with age (54). I have Parkinson's disease and some osteoporosis (am falling apart and that's why I want my hair to at least look good!). My current medications include Actonel, Azilect, Lexapro, Requip, and Zocor -- do you know if any of these meds would affect my getting a perm or body wave? Would really hate to see my hair coming off on the rollers!! Seriously, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks!

LLBT D replied: "ha you dont know that answer LOL"

Laural replied: "Don't do the perm is my advice. Your hair will look like a used SOS pad."
