Can taking Clomid when you don't need it increase your risk of twins or more more then 10%? I have been put on it because I have PCOS. I am on cd15 and hoping and praying. Sometimes I ovulate on my own though. So if I ovulate on my own one month as well as take the clomid will it increase my risk of twins more?My doctor prescribed me 50 mg days 5-9.

Wendy B replied: "Clomid increases your risk of multiple pregnancy (NOT JUST TWINS) PERIOD. No matter if you "need" it or not."

akhoney replied: "regardless of if you are going to ovulate on your own or not clomid increases your odds of multiples greatly! If you are not comfortable with that you should not take the drugs until you have discussed with your doctor your concerns... While 50mg is the lowest dose it is still a possibility. I honestly would not have intercourse without resolving this issue."

bobbypogi replied: "just follow what ur dr. told they know what's best for the patient hope u can & be cured on ur illness I'll pray 4 that GOOD DAY @ GOD BLESS TITA"

Gena replied: "yes it does increase ur chances, but i was on it for 5 months or more and had more than one folicle (egg) each month and didnt get pregnant with even 1!! It most likely happens that u get pregnant with 1, but the risk is always there."

Is there a high risk of miscarriage with clomid? I'm on provera right now to induce a period so my doctor can run more tests and then I'll probably go on clomid. I hear a lot of people tell me they've had miscarriages with clomid. I really don't think I can handle a miscarriage since we've been TTC for almost 3 years now. (Also, I have PCOS)

S. Mommy replied: "I have not heard that.... I got pregnant using Clomid and got pregnant the 1st round! I now have a happy healthy baby 9 month old baby boy! And we were trying for about a year or so before we started. They also did that tube test to check and see how open my tubes were and they say that was the other part of the reason i got pregnant the first try! Good Luck and I would recommend the Clomid!"

honey replied: "i fell pregnant with twins and successfully delivered them after my first round of clomid.............my problem prior to clomid was recurrent miscarriage...... so in my case, clomid was the solution. Of course there is a risk of miscarriage with every pregnancy, but if you haven't had any success so far, then I really think you need to take the risk, or you may never get the happy result you are after.... You'll be ok...... good luck"

HIGH RISK WITH CLOMID? are the risk high when using clomid? i know what the risks are but not sure how often they occur....is there a high risk of misscarriage for all who use it? any and all feedback regarding this drug would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Sarah S replied: "I took Clomid for 6 months and did have an ectopic pregnancy that had nothing to do with the Clomid. Your risk for miscarriage with Clomid is NOT higher than naturally conceiving you are just that much more closely monitoring yourself. Remember, most women miscarry early and mistake it for a period therefore never knowing they were ever pregnant. You will be counting cycle days and getting blood tests so your dr will know everything your body is doing. You'll also know as soon as you're pregnant which most women do not. Good luck!"

If you took clomid and already ovulate would it increase your risk of twins? Any harmful effects? If I took it just for the fact to get twins would it increase my chances. I already ovulate every month. I just want twins. Would it increase my chances if i took it days 5-9

Cindy replied: "Not sure I get the question... Normally you take clomid on CD3-8 or CD5-9 So almost all woman would not have ovulated yet. Why would you have taken it after you ovulated? Please explain in more detail. Thank You... I am not sure about that. Clomid alredy increases the chances of having twins. Not as much as you would think though. But I would not suggest you take it when you are ovulating on your own just to try to get twins. If you really really want twin I would suggest you go to your doctor and maybe try invitro or something like that. Don't mess your body up by taking medicine you dont need. You could really mess yourself up. Good Luck"

Butterfly replied: "you need to elaborate on your question a little more."

Just Me replied: "I think what you're asking is if you take Clomid but already ovulate regularly will the chances of twins be increased. The chance of twins (or any multiples for that matter) does increase if you're taking Clomid, but it is a negligible increase, and that does not change if you were ovulating on your own. That is what my OBGYN had told me. Harmful effects.....well as far as side effects of taking Clomid? It can create cysts on ovaries, cause hot flashes, headaches, extreme moodiness, and vaginal dryness. That is all I can remember off the top of my head from the information insert I got with my prescription of Clomid. I have personally experienced the hot flashes, moodiness, vaginal dryness, and headaches. I'd have to say that the worst is the hot flashes and moodiness. I hate being so darn emotional, and the hot flashes always happen at the most inopportune time!"

Wanna-Be-Mommy replied: "Are you being monitored by a doctor while taking this? It's one of those medications that needs to be followed up with a doctor. Clomid does increase your chances of twins, but not as much as the injectible medications do."

Clomid Miscarriage Risk? I just started by first cycle of clomid (fingers crossed) & I have been reading about it online. I've come across a lot of sites that say it ups your risk for miscarriage and others that say the opposite. Has anyone spoken to their doc about the risk?

Someday... replied: "I was on Clomid for six cycles and spoke with both my GP and RE about it. As far as I'm aware there are no increased risks of MC. Best of luck and baby dust to you!"

gk replied: "Sorry to say this but it sounds like a miscarriage to me Thats how miscarriage started"

Tina replied: "I tried Clomid for 4 cycles and asked my doctor . . . he told me that the real risk was taking Clomid when you were pregnant already . . . and that is why it was so important for me to get a blood test before starting my next cycle . . . Hope this helps!"

Starting Clomid cycle: Penicillan/Painkiller a risk on sperm? My wife is starting on clomid. I just had my 4 wisdom teeth pulled last Friday. I am on Penicillan and Pain killer. In about 12 days they'll want my sperm for IUI. I am wondering if the Penicillan or painkiller or my teeth operation would stop my production of sperm that I'll need in 12 days. Does anyone know?

anne h replied: "I do not know whether penicillin or pain killers can affect your test. You may want to do a search on line and type in the medication you are taking with the words fertility. You should be able to see if there are any side affects which would affect the test. I have been ttc for 14 months and am currently on my third round of clomid. My husband had to have the same test prior to starting clomid. Good luck and lots of baby dust to you!"

I was on clomid the month before I got preg. but not the month I conceived. Do I run the risk of twins? I am 8 weeks along and I look huge. I was in maternity clothes at 7 weeks. Also this is baby #3. Genetics in my family show very early with baby #3. But still wondering, since I was on Clomid the month before- not the month of conception.

April1721 replied: "My sister is on this and has been told that she could have twins too. So yes I am guessing its the same for you. It won't be definate it will just be that a lot of people who are on it get twins."

Only 3 weeks until Baby Joey! replied: "I would say not... it is for the month you are on it, but I find it funny you got pregnant the month after! Good for you! It never worked for me, I had to go to IVF! Plus it is baby #3, this is my 3rd pregnancy too and I ballooned up!!! Good luck! Mommy to 5 y.o., 3 y.o. twins and 35+ weeks with baby #4"

angel K replied: "I have read that clomid is a low level fertility drug, so even if you were on clomid when you got preg, there is not a very big chance of twins."

charlie replied: "All the friends that this happened to had twins! Congratulations"

PK211 replied: "Clomid only works when you are using it so while you still could have twins since they really are flukes of nature they would not be caused by the Clomid. With my 3rd I was big by 8 weeks and had a singleton. I was also on Clomid that month, produced 4 eggs but only 1 baby. Congrats."

live love laugh replied: "i dont think that that has anything to do with having twins or not. And twins are not a bad think so dont say risk"

baby #3 nov 26, 2008 replied: "if you weren't on it the month that you concieved then you have the same chances as every one else. but I gotta say this is my third to and I'm giant at almost 7 weeks. here are some pictures that I took because I wanted to see if what I saw in the mirror is what every one else sees. the date is wrong and my stomach hasn't changed at all since they were taken also I was around 5 weeks not 6. "

What are the risks of taking clomid if I ovulate on my own? Please Help!? I have been TTC for 17 months and DR is thinking my eggs are not maturing. I will be starting clomid this cycle. Will my ovaries be overstimulated? Is there a chance of multiple eggs to be released. TY!

sweetheart24 replied: "with any fertility med there is always a chance for multiples. I think the chance goes up 10%. your doctor should be monitoring you so they can see how many mature eggs you produce with the clomid. Good luck with everything! :o)"

tulip97012 replied: "As already stated, you do risk the chance of multiples. Your chances of having multiples can sometimes be greater than your chances of multiples when using IVF. This is because you cannot regulate how many eggs mature and are released with Clomid. The other problem is that your body can have a hard time making the egg-white, clear cervical mucus you need in order to allow the sperm to make it to the egg safely. When on Clomid, you may have to resort to having intrauterine insemination in order to allow the sperm to reach the egg. These are all things you should talk to your doctor about before starting the meds."

Yoda replied: "I took Clomid for 8 months and I never had more than 1 egg mature every month. The doctor will start you on the 50 mg dose which is the lowest dose.Like previously stated, your cervical muscus can become more hostile with the Clomid, I used to take Robitussin a few days before and during ovulation because it will thin all mucus in your body... Make sure it is straight Robitussin."

starcatcher3355 replied: "Overstimulation is rare with clomid. There is only a 10% chance of having twins and it's usually when you start on cycle day 3 or sooner. Women have lots of eggs that race to be the one that matures. Around cycle day 6, the battle results are in and the biggest follie becomes the one to ovulate while the others support the development of the lining and die off. The eggs are recruited to begin this process at 120 days but they accelerate in growth on cycle day 3 so by starting on cycle day 3 you're increasing the odds of more than one egg reach maturity but it's a 10% increasing which isn't high. Doctors choice to start patients on cycle day 3 in hopes to making more than one develop so that at least one will implant. If you start on cycle day 5, you're increasing the odds of one egg mature better by boosting the fsh that causes the egg to mature."
