What are the health complications from a zoloft overdose ending in serotonin syndrome? This weekend, while quite drunk and coming down from an MDMA binge from the day before, I ingested somewhere between 550 and 650 mg of zoloft (11-13 50mg pills). I also ate 3 gravol pills.
My friends tried to make me vomit, but thanks to the gravol, I couldn't. I passed out for about 2 hours, then vomited when I woke up. When my friends woke up, my pupils were fully dilated, my eyes were roving, and I was twitching uncontrollably. I switched from being really paranoid and hyper vigilante, to manically drunk and very confused. My friends looked up my symptoms online, and diagnosed me with seratonin syndrom. I didn't go to the hospital - instead they gave me muscle relaxers all day to help with the seizure-like twitching.
I was like that for most of the day - it didn't really end until midnight, even with muscle relaxers.
I'm wondering what the health risks of this overdose are. What kind of damage may have occurred, and is there anything I should do to help my body recover?
Serotonin syndrome?Zoloft? I have been dealing with horrible anxiety for the past 4 months. non-stop pain and weariness. I have seen many doctors, and they say everything is alright. I finally went to a psychiatrist. she prescribed zoloft. I do not start until next week. I decided to go online and look up zoloft to learn a little more. A paragraph about serotonin syndrome caught my eye, and i googled it. I was surprised to read that many of my attacks symptoms were equal to those of an mild excess serotonin syndrome. I am only a teen, so many things I say or do get ignored to the doctor. Is serotonin syndrome possible to get without taking any other drugs? is it possible to have if you have a thyroid problem (the doctor did not check my thyroid levels.)? Is there any sort of home remedy to deal with it? My questions may be a bit silly being that I am still immature on this topic, but please, I have no where else to ask these questions :P
Nik replied: "I wouldnt take the medication.
Keep in mind medication changes the way....your brain functions.
Important huh?
Id stick with sleep, tell yourself you accept yourself for whoever you are, and pray to god.
I'd bet that be a good solution for you."
zoloft and serotonin syndrome? will taking a daily dose 1 pill at night cause me serotonin syndrome or no. i dont think it will or why would my doc prescribe it to me but im 15 and a half and m very paranoid about things. or will it?
iwilltrustinyou replied: "You are wise to be concerned because many times anti-depressants have an off effect on teenagers. I'm not sure what serotonin syndorme is, though.
The FDA issued a warning concerning antidepressants such as Zoloft, and suicide in children and teenagers. In studies, there was a slightly increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in children and teenagers who took antidepressants such as Zoloft; however, it is difficult to know for sure if these antidepressants cause suicidal behavior. From what is known about Zoloft and suicide, people with bipolar disorder and those who have previously attempted suicide are among those most at risk for suicidal behavior with the drug."
Az R replied: "No.
Serotonin Syndrome is remarkably hard to induce. You usually have to be trying. It occurs when you combine multiple serotonin enhancing drugs, usually in excess. Alone, there is no SSRI antidepressant potent enough to induce it.
Mixing other extremely potent serotonergics together, like ecstasy, or the nightmare that is St. John's Wort in can do it if you're at -very- high doses of an SSRI, but under normal circumstances it's basically unheard of."
Zoloft Overdose/Serotonin Syndrome? I took 1500mg of Zoloft and 300mg of Lamictal two nights ago. The night I took them I only slept 30 min. but it wasn't like I was sleepy, I was wide awake. I was sweating a lot, and I felt that I had to keep moving. My eyes where fully dialated. I was VERY shaky.
The next morning I was like a zombie. I was having muscle spasms. I was groogy, and had no appitite. I also had a 101.0 degree fever.
Today I feel better, my fever went down, but I am still dizzy and am still have uncontolable muscle spasms.
Should I be worried, or is it something that just needs time to wear out?
Amber replied: "did you take more than you were supposed to, or was that your usually amount? The symptoms sound like it may have been sort of like SS, but if your symptoms are going down maybe waiting out out won't be so bad. If they persist, at least give your doc a call."
What are symptoms of low serotonin levels? i have what they call "clinical depression"..i take zoloft but i deicded to fuck it because i didn't want it anymore. i mean..i can't stay on it forever. eventually i need to find my own happiness. not artificial stuff in a pill. so now that my serotonin levels are super low, other than of course the obvious of being depressed, i keep getting really dizzy, and light headed and space out a bunch. is this from the low serotonin?
What are your experiences with Zoloft while pregnant? My serotonin is totally out of whack, I asked the doctor to prescribe Zoloft and he did on Friday. He told me to start with 25mg for one week and 50 mg throughout the pregnancy. I am almost 5 months pregnant. Zoloft has always helped me tremendously but this is the first time I take it while pregnant. WHat are your experiences with anti-depressants during pregnancy? Will the baby be born with major defects although the Sonogram and amnio show everything to be fine?
angelmwilson replied: "My Dr did the same thing to me. Same dose too!
Drugs are in a "class" A B C D
A and B are safe to take while preggo
C is kinda unknown-no tests to prove harm and none to prove good
D is a big fat NO NO
Zoloft is C
I did some research and found that some studies have proved that newborns from moms on Zoloft did show signs of withdraw and or tremor's....this did go away!
I chose to stop taking it. I was on it for depression. I searched for myself a class A or B drug for depression and and found wellbutrin which is B, I asked her about it and she put me on it. Worked great!"
mktk401 replied: "i took Zoloft during my pregnancy and my son is 22 months old and is just fine. He is developmentally on track. I think the adverse effects of not taking the meds when you are pregnant are worse than the effects on the baby. Talk to your dr if you are still unsure. Good luck."
Why is serotonin bad to use if you are bi polar? what happens when you are bi polar and take serotonin and it is already in your system?
I was treated before with anxiety and depression, but i am actually bi polar. so i have been taking 125 mg of zoloft and weaning off of it. i will be done with it in 8 days, and have already started the right medication.
yeah, i have been way more manic. it is really ridiculous.
serotonin reuptake inhibitor
yeah thats what i ment.
i have been much more suicidal too.
My doctor recommended that I try switching from Zoloft to Prozac. Has anyone done this? I have been on Zoloft for 3 years. I feel SO much better than before I was on it, but still am not 100%. I feel like my brain is a battery and that literally, the serotonin levels drain out. It's a very strange feeling. I also feel alot more lethargic than I did before going on the medicine. My doc recommended that I try Prozac. I am terrified, as my chemistry is so sensitive. Any feedback from those who have switched.
southernxswthrt055 replied: "My mom and my brother both did this..For some reason it was for their ADD, but anyways, they seemed to be fine if not better? I think your doctor probably wouldn't have reccommended it inless he thought it would be okay for you to try it. I might get other opinions from other doctors, however, if you still feel un-easy. Tell them your concerns, and maybe there's something even better you could get on."
stacia replied: "It's different for different people. Switching meds can be rough or easy. Zoloft is one of the heftier ADs so you may experience some withdrawals. Hopefully, your doc starts you on Prozac while you are still on a low dose of Zoloft. That tends to make it easier. If you have side effects for the first month or so don't assume they are entirely due to Prozac.
If you don't have luck with Prozac, see a psychiatrist. Starting with Prozac or another kind/gentle AD is preferable to jumping in with a stronger SSRI like Zoloft. You are sort of going backwards now. Each SSRI has a different effect, so maybe P will do the trick. But, if not, you need someone more experienced in psych meds."
Jason C replied: "Prozac has the longest half-life of all the anti-depressants, meaning it stays in your system the longest. If you are saying that you can feel your serotonin levels go down, then the Zoloft may not be long enough acting for you. Your doctor is probably making a smart move.
Just make sure that you slowly go off the Zoloft and start the Prozac before you're completely off the Zoloft. That will help with the withdrawls.
I wouldn't call Prozac a 'weaker' SSRI than Zoloft. It's actually quite strong, and fast acting so you should see results faster than you did on Zoloft.
One other thing to consider is that just an SSRI may not be what you need. That's what happened to me. I was on a couple different ones--- Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac--- and they always left me tired and drained. I recently switched to Cymbalta which is a SSNRI (also works on norepinephrine) and I have much more energy. It also seems like my depression and anxiety are under better control too. Might be something to discuss with your doctor."
ang1492 replied: "Prozac stays in the system (your body) longer as opposed to zoloft which is gone in 24 hrs."
