mariko m replied: "lilly, I acne problems beginning when I was in high school. I had acne on my back that was really embarrasing. I tried Proactiv, Murad, Aceneticin, and even the Asso Gold Cleaning Bar with dismal results. I wound up visitng a local dermatologist in Iowa. After 3 months nearly all of my acne cleared up. I recommed you try finding a New Jersey dermatologist that can help."

When first taking spironolactone for acne, must there be monthly doctor appointments like when taking accutane? And has any women out there had great success curing their acne with spironolactone? It's supposed to help with hormonal acne. I would be happy to hear that this is an effective treatment besides accutane. Thank you people for answering my question. I have tried Proactive, retinoids, clearpores, antibiotics, natural remedies, and countless over the counter products but to no avail. I doubt I would ever get accutane because my acne is only moderate and the list of side effects are scary. I suspect my acne is linked to hormones which is why i'm asking about spironolactone. I've researched quite a bit but cannot find out how many follow up doctor appointments i need while on this med. I'm going on vacation for a month and would like to start spironolactone before leaving but frequent doctor appointments would inhibit me from this. Any helpful answers are appreciated. Sorry for such a long story =]

fabyonis replied: "I started taking Spiro about 1.5 months ago. It has been AMAZING for me!! I have severe acne and it has helped me soooo much. I haven't had any side effects from this drug and I don't have to go for any doctor visits, although you can always go to your doctor and have them check your potassium levels if this is a concern for you. Most people say it can take 3-4 months for it to work, but for me, I started noticing results in 3 weeks!! I've had acne since I was 12 years old and when I turned 23 my acne got worse. I went from having moderate to sever cystic acne. It was so bad that it hurt every time I washed my face. My Dermatologist put me on Spiro for only ONE month and then took me off it. I wanted to keep taking it because I feared that as soon as I stopped taking it my acne would come back so I went to my gynecologist and he quickly wrote me up a prescription with 11 refills!! It's kind of strange... my dermatologist said it was strong medication and one month on it was enough, yet my gynecologist said that as soon as I stopped taking it my acne would come back and said there is no danger in taking it for a prolonged period of time. He just told me to go back in 6 months to check potassium levels. Overall, I would recommend it. You have nothing to lose. It's very CHEAP(I pay $8 for a month's supply... with NO insurance) and side effects are minimal. For me, it just makes me pee a lot, lol."
