Is smoking marijuana while on an SSRI (antidepressant) dangerous? Does anyone know if it is dangerous to smoke while taking Paxil? What are the effects of this interaction?
Christina replied: "Paxil cr.
Omg yes it is.
Didnt anyone ever tell you not to smoke marajuana while on prescription drugs.
Its a filthy habbit anyway and it only makes you more depressed."
Kip replied: "You possibly could lower your blood pressure. That being said your on a drug and your wanting to smoke (inhale a drug) your mixing drugs, and its never a good idea."
Happykid replied: "Marijuana works (in low doses) the same was an SSRI does. I'm not sure if it would be too strong of an effect combined- you should really talk with your doctor about that. "
Is it okay to smoke a cigarette while taking SSRI's? Specifically Paxil? Sounds kinda stupid, but someone told me that I shouldn't while I'm taking them.
Brian L replied: "If I recall correctly, SSRIs are actually effective at helping you quit smoking.
At any rate, I'm not aware of any effects that come from combining nicotine and an ssri."
Brainbabe replied: "The smoking will not interfere with the efficacy of Paxil, however it will continue to ruin your lungs and overall health, one puff at a time. Do y ourself a favor and Q U I T! (Good luck!)"
CP replied: "It's never okay to smoke..."
Laura g replied: "its never okay"
jmom replied: "will probably increase the metabolism of the paxil and make it slight ly less effective"
olympics junkie replied: "Smoking at all, ever, is stupid. That said, before I quit, I smoked on Prozac, & it didn't seem to have any influence o the effectiveness of the drug, & my doctor never cautioned me about smoking in connection with the drug. Since Prozac & Paxil are from the same class of drugs, I would assume the same holds true."
The Un-Cola replied: "Smoking is not a contraindication to the use of SSRI's"
Can I take Chantix while taking Paxil? I'm currently on 20mg of Paxil. I'd like to use Chantix to quit smoking, but I'm not sure if I can take it with my Paxil.
Well, Jonathon, thank you for enlightening me. My point is...I want to quit for good - not just until I start up again. Good for you if you can cold turkey it, but I've tried it, and it doesn't work out well for me.
Issues with Marijuana & Antidepressants? Does anyone know if it is dangerous to smoke weed while taking Paxil? What are the effects of this interaction? Anything potentially fatal?
is it bad to smoke marijuana when on anti depressents? im on paxil and idk if its bad to mix the two because i've been taking it for a while and now i smoke weed, is it bad to mix them?
LadyLynn replied: "I see no problem there, but just to be sure, call your pharmacist. They've heard everything, and are very smart, kind, and helpful. Good luck, hon! :)"
chicks_rock_hard replied: "ummmmmmmm.....i didn't kno it was safe to be smoking marajuana period....but that doesn't sound too good either..."
.nataliee.xvi replied: "YES it is bad to mix them. They both release different chemicals in your brain and it is definitely not a good idea to mix. I cant rememeber if weed is a stimulant or depressant, but either way its very bad.
If it a depressant, then it is doing the opposite of the anti depressant you are taking and messing it up.
If it is a stimulant, then it is doubling what ur meds are doing which really cant be good, b/c it could raise the chemicals in your brain to a dangerous level, like overdosing."
I <3 him replied: "ummmm it is bad to asmoke maijuana with or with out other drungs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
angelina replied: "i guess it is .. u shouldn't mix those 2, be careful"
heebman567 replied: "No i dont think so it would just make you more happy but weed doesn't have like bad interactions with anything that i know of it would be all in your head if there was."
rjksmooth replied: "Its bad to smoke marijuana period."
Is it still Munchausen's By Proxy if she killed the baby while still in utero? SIL claims that she was on Paxil (this is still not confirmed) and that her doctors told her it was too risky to take her off it. To my knowledge, a regular MD cannot prescribe an ongoing Paxil therapy, but that is the least of this. She is a 2yr RN, and I believe she intentionally took something to make sure her baby would not be born compatible with life, and in fact it did die at birth from CDH. Long story, but when you put all the pieces together it is a scary picture of the kind of mentally ill person I truly believe she is. But is she really suffering from MP or is this an extreme form of narcissistic tendencies just yelling out for attention? She fits all the narcissistic symptoms, and then some. And somehow 2 years after the death of their baby she is STILL not pg, but claims to be trying and is still smoking, drinking, etc...and gets very angry when people ask her about this, like she doesn't want to be "found out".
There is a lot more to it...and the baby didn't die in utero. Was born alive with a birth defect YES, but she also took several drugs admittedly throughout pg but when she was asked to prove it by the hospital she got defensive and made things up. We don't think she was ever on anything LEGALLY...and she is always doing what she can for attention. It was the hospital who came TO THE FAMILY about their concerns...her jumping docs even while pg, supposed issues with fertility when there weren't any, and now the lies about supposedly being on Paxil. Nothing is adding up, even about her supposedly wanting to get pg so badly. They think she never actually went off the pill so she could continue to play off the baby's death AND her none existent fertility issues. The investigators were tipped off by a few people she beat up in bars over the past few months..and they have been asking a lot of questions about her demeanor since we've known her.
apparently no one can read. regardless of my "issues" with her, it doesn't negate the fact that over 2 yrs later investigators have been called on her because her own MD cannot find proof that she was ever on anything. They also said that they believe she was doing this all even before she actually got pg with the baby that died...they said they don't think she ever really wanted to be pg because they don't believe she ever went off the pill then either. This came to light for her docs when they did blood tests and she was still on the pill...while she was being tested for possible fertility issues. her family has come forward with a lot of info as well, and again, i don't know what any of this has to do with ME. I just knew something was very off about her, i never thought other people would catch on or that it would really be this bad. and who is mya? learn how to comprehend while you read...no one here is named mya.
H. Spencer replied: "Don't knock yourself out playing armchair therapist. She may have lost the baby for a reason you know nothing about. It doesn't qualify as MBP if the baby died in utero, no. She may be irresponsible, but you should stay out of her business. This is too personal a subject to speculate wildly on."
stacia replied: "MDs can prescribe ongoing treatment with Paxil or most any other antidepressants or medicines. They often do.
OB's can sign off on Paxil or other meds, and do when the benefits outweigh the risks.
Someone with recurring major depression is particularly susceptible to depression during and post pregnancy. OBs do approve antidepressants when the risk from the med is less than the risks to the fetus associated with the mother's depression.
Depression, and most other mental illnesses, do not equate to sociopathic personality disorders.
People get hooked on cigarettes, and although it's not the best idea to smoke while pregnant, it is not about seeking to deform or kill the fetus.
Some people have difficulty conceiving. A still birth suggests that may be the case. A still birth also is a powerful reason to want to hold off on trying again.
MP is about making a child sick for the parent to get sympathy. It's impossible to do that when the child never lived.
I think you have issues with your SIL and you are more into calling her names and making claims than actually looking at the situation with empathy, compassion, and recognition of your own biases and baggage you bring to the relationship. Having a still birth is very much like the death of any child. Hasn't it occurred to you that your SIL simply is in morning and feeling guilt over something she in fact had no control?
****
Mya, that sounds quite a bit different than your original post. Still, it doesn't sound like MP. It sounds more like either drug addiction problems or personality disorder types of psychiatric problems. Basically, she sounds eff'ed up."

BEDFORD, Texas -- One of the first things you notice about Adrian Vasquez is the bulge beneath his shirt. It's a pacemaker, the size of a chocolate-covered Oreo cookie.
Adrian is only 2 1/2 years old.
Born with a double outlet on the right ventricle of his heart, Adrian has endured three open-heart surgeries and countless trips to the emergency room.
His life has been fragile from the beginning. The day after Adrian was born, a hospital chaplain baptized him in the ICU. With a tube in his nose helping him breathe, Adrian's mother and father sprinkled holy water on his tiny head. He was so weak, they weren't allowed to hold him. Adrian's first surgery was three days later, when he was 5 days old. (Watch a boy with a broken heart )
Sitting in their home in suburban Dallas, Texas, Anthony and Matilda Vasquez recently talked about the night their son almost died. Adrian was 5 months old and had just undergone surgery. He had been in the hospital for about a week and seemed to be thriving. In the middle of the night, the young couple got a call.
Adrian was crashing.
They rushed to the hospital. Anthony Vasquez says Adrian was "gasping for air and turning blue." It took doctors a half-hour to stabilize him. "He pulled out of it," Vasquez says with fatherly pride.
For a long time, Matilda Vasquez says, she went over in her head every aspect of her pregnancy, trying to figure out whether she did something to cause Adrian's heart problems. She says she didn't smoke, didn't drink, exercised and watched her diet. She says she didn't even want to take aspirin for fear it would hurt the baby. However, she was taking the antidepressant Paxil when she got pregnant. She says she asked her doctor about it and after checking the labeling, he said it was safe for her to keep taking it.
But late last year, Anthony Vasquez heard something on television about Paxil, heart problems and babies. He checked the Internet and found a warning from the Food and Drug Administration. It said early results from two studies suggested women who took Paxil during the first three months of pregnancy were 1.5 to 2 times as likely to have a baby born with a heart defect as women who received other antidepressants or women who didn't take antidepressants.
Paxil is made by Glaxo Smith-Kline. A company internal study released in 2005 and shared with the FDA found a 1.5 times increased risk for heart malformations for Paxil compared with other antidepressants. Normally, the risk of giving birth to a child with a heart defect is about 1 percent.
At the urging of the FDA, Glaxo Smith-Kline changed Paxil's labeling in September 2005 to warn about the risks of birth defects.
Adrian's parents were furious. They believe Glaxo Smith-Kline was aware of the drug's risk before he was born in April 2004 and didn't do enough to warn doctors or expectant mothers. In July, the family sued the company. Glaxo Smith Kline declined to comment on the lawsuit, but in a written statement said it has diligently monitored the safety of Paxil before and after its approval by the FDA in 1992.
The American Medical Association estimates about 40,000 women take antidepressants while pregnant. Weaning a woman off an antidepressant while pregnant can be excruciating. Many doctors we spoke with say the pros often outweigh the cons.
On Wednesday, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists Committee on Obstetric Practice recommended that the use of paroxetine, or Paxil, among pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant be avoided, if possible. The group also said that treatment with with all SSRIs or selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors or both during pregnancy be judged on a case by case basis.
But Matilda Vasquez believes expectant mothers should have all the information so they can make the decision for themselves. She says had she known about the possibility of heart defects, she would have stopped taking Paxil.
These days, Adrian spends a lot of time at the doctor's office. He is behind developmentally and communicates on the level of a 9-month-old. His big brother, Isaiah, often "translates" for his parents and grandparents. It breaks his father's heart to think that Adrian will never be able to do "boy things" like roughhousing or playing soccer.
When it's not too hot, Adrian and his brother "drive" around the family's back yard in a child-sized electric truck. The boys smile and squeal as their dad follows. Matilda Vasquez smiles at her family, but there is also a longing in her eyes. "Adrian will never have a normal life," she says. "I just hope this lawsuit will just warn people and let them see what an innocent baby can go through."

How much THC would one need to consume to experience lifetime psychological effects? Let me just add i've consumed no more than 3 grams of marijuana in my entire life, in a span of maybe 5 months although while taking prozac or paxil.
The effects that I noticed immidiately were an increased high, at times paranoia, and the usual symptoms of "high" doses including synesthesia'
even 2 weeks after smoking anything i still confuse tactile sensations, i'm constantly dissasociating, at times paranoid of objects or noises, at times catatonic always percieving things as if i was a person in a skyscraper, just looking at the scenery,
I guess i was just hoping if anyone could shed light into this and its possible link to marijuana use
Rachel J replied: "There is alot of debate about the affect of pot on mental states. personally i believe that pot can definately affect people and some people are more susceptible to these problems then others. I'd advise you to go to the the doctors if these feelings continue as the problems you're experiencing could be showing an underlying mental problem. and no more pot may be a good idea!"
whiddershins replied: "People can *rarely* have extreme, possibly psychotic, reactions to smoking marijuana, regardless of quantity. I've never heard of these effects being permanent, but in some cases they can last as long as two years.
I don't think any real research has been done regarding the interactions of marijuana with prozac or paxil. Assuming you are taking those as a prescription, is there any way you can talk with your psychiatrist about what role the antidepressants may have in your symptoms?
Either way, if you are at risk from that sort of reaction to smoking pot, I would cross it off my list of pastimes, permanently."
KGB replied: "The THC is most likely not responsible, as much as the conservatives and bible bashers would love to have you believe that is the case. The chemicals in your antidepressants are most likely causing your mental instabilities. Therefore, I recommend that you cease using all mind altering substances, prescribed or otherwise, for at least a week in order to allow your body to detox and repair itself."
Chandra157 replied: "sometimes it's hard to differentiate depression from the psychotropic effects of marijuana. It takes a while for your brain to go back to normal after long periods of exposure, but what you are saying is that you were never exposed to it for a long period of time, so I say the effects you are experiencing are the affects of the anti-depressants, and smoking only made you aware of these effects. I've never heard of anyone permanently damaging their sensory perceptions from 3grams of weed over a period of 5 months. Take a look at the side effects of the other drugs you are taking."
Ok this is what I decided to do about my anxiety and medication. Good or Dumb? Since I've noticed that anxiety is all in my head i've decided not to take a SSRI. Its weird ever since my doctor prescribed me paxil or laxapro my anxiety stoped COMPLETLEY just knowing that im gettin some help being put on medicine. So obvisouly its just all in my head and its not as serious as I thought since I havnt had a panic attack all day. And thats just from being decribed and NOT taking anything. So NOW i have decided to not take a SSRI since My anxiety isnt that bad, but ill keep "xanax" just incase I feel one coming on again. I know xanax can be habit forming but Im not the addicting type. I quit smoking with no problem after smoking for 8 years. Is "xanax" ok to take once in a while? Not everyday, but just when i feel anxiety TO THE EXTREME and absolutly feel i need it. Or am I being stupid and dumb? I Just feel like I can do fine without an SSRI, and with the help of some xanax once in awhile. What do you guys think? This can save me money, as well as extra problems.
uM "iLaff", what the fuck are you talking about? Apparently your meds are fukin up your thinking. I AM NOT ON ANY MEDICATION, im not stoping ANYTHING. Im just Considering not going on anything. Read before you post bull shit.
MyNickName replied: "I am not sure that is a good idea. I always feel better at the though of getting help i.e. making the appointment so that by the time the date comes around I either go and feel so good after the one time that I don't go back. Or I don't even go to the first apt b/c I feel good just for making it. (all this w/o medication) But the good feeling doesn't last long. Withing a few days or weeks I am having suicidal thoughts or I start cutting again."
MM7 replied: "No, you are not stupid. A lot of medications are psychological and people start to "feel" better once they take meds because that is what is expected. No, I am not saying that your prescribed medicines doesn't help but I think 50% is mental. I have anxiety and panic attacks at times, as well, but I refuse to take medications because for me personally they are not that serious and doesn't affect my social and personal life. I have to tell myself that my healing comes from within. However, since they WERE prescribed I recommend that you continue to take it unless your doctor says otherwise...just to be on the safe side."
kaliluna replied: "Xanax is okay to use once in a while for emergencies, but you should probably check with your doctor before making any hasty decisions. It's entirely true that just knowing you were getting something helped relieve your anxiety, but what is the real cause of your anxiety? You could also consider filling the prescription when you need it (prescriptions are usually good for 1 year after they are prescribed) so you can go some time without it, but if you then need it you won't have to go back to your doctor."
ILaff replied: "Uh, let me understand you; You feel like what you are doing is working so you are going to stop doing it? You do know this is the CLASSIC response to a successful treatment plan...that is; since it works you're all better so you can quit the meds...why oh why would do such a thing?? I do NOT get it...and I take wellbutrin and plan are continuing to do so...I Deserve to NOT feel like hammered dogdo and will never go back ever...why are you?"
Ginkgo replied: "See this site for natural help for anxiety.
"
imderanged replied: "some people can work through anxiety without meds, so if you think you want to try and do it that way I don't think that is dumb, but i would suggest staying in treatment. Your Dr. can help you learn other ways of dealing with the anxiety (cognitive behavioral therapy, or desenitization...etc.) I personally wouldn't do the xanax they way you described but that's just my experience. tranquilizers just mask symptoms and don't solve the problem, mentally or chemically. i used to used Xanax just the way you described, but I found that it gave me terrible nightmares, I felt even MORE anxious the next day, and often felt depressed."
lisacantcook replied: "Everything sounds good, but you need to understand about the SSRI's. It can take a couple of weeks or so for them to be out of your system just like it took a while to get in your system. If you start feeling bad, it could get real bad quickly. Just be careful, and good luck!"
sax2003dude replied: "DON'T TAKE SSRIS!!!!.(paxil, prozac) I know from experience, having suffered from ocd. The underlying problem is your brain does not produce enough serotonin. SSRIS do not raise serotonin and related neurotransmitters they just trick the brain into thinking you have enough. This can lead to neurotransmitter depletion and make your problem worse. After seeing the doctor recently ( second opinion unfortunately a little late), I have dangerously low serotonin levels, due to my use of paxil. (I now have problems related to low levels of serotonin including no appetite, increased anxiety, spastic mood patterns, problems going to sleep, problems waking up after I go to sleep I am receiving treatment for this thankfully). A product you should look into is 5 HTP. You can find this product at any walgreens, cvs pharmacy or walmart. It increases your serotonin levels among other neurotransmitters."
milk fur replied: "If you feel its working then do it like you said saves money and extra problems you know what feels best for you"
Murphyboy replied: "I think you should talk over all your concerns with your Doctor simply because not taking a medication as he may prescribe could do you no good, and may do harm by stopping and starting depending how you feel that day. Medications
all work in different ways, and it is important to be consistent so that your progress can be monitored. Of course your anxiety is not just in your head and don't hesitate to get treatment. I really hope you will get good results and start to feel better soon!"
