How long until Paxil effects start happening? I just started taking Paxil today and I was curious how long it normally takes before you start feeling the effects? I thought it was 2-3 weeks, but I'm not sure.

windrainlove1055 replied: "Basically to get a certain baseline of medication to have the correct effect with anti-depressants I would say 2 weeks although some effects will be felt within 3 days just hang in there as the 2 weeks will feel interminable until such time."

C-DuB replied: "It may take up to 4-6 weeks before you start seeing effects. Hang in there!"

What has been your experience with the side effects of Paxil CR? My boyfriend is 27 and recently started taking Paxil CR (for anxiety). In addition to making him more calm, there seem to be some sexual side effects as well. What has been your experience with the side effects or the side effects of your partner while taking this drug? I don't know how much of it is truly the medication and how much may be psychological.

Sean p replied: "Nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhea, trouble sleeping, yawning, constipation, or dry mouth may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: loss of appetite, unusual or severe mental/mood changes, increased sweating/flushing, unusual fatigue, uncontrolled movements (tremor), restlessness, inability to sit/stand still, decreased interest in sex, changes in sexual ability. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: black stools, blurred vision, change in amount of urine, "coffee ground" vomit, easy bruising/bleeding. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: fainting, irregular heartbeat, muscle pain, trouble swallowing, unusual swelling, seizures, tingling or numbness of the hands/feet. For males, in the very unlikely event you have a painful or prolonged erection lasting 4 or more hours, stop using this drug and seek immediate medical attention, or permanent problems could occur. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist."

What are the side effects for Paxil? I have just switched from Zoloft because of the side effects of drowsiness but then insomnia... Now I'm trying Paxil and the medical literature states lots of side effects including the above. Can anyone tell me if they have personally had any short or long-term side effects from Paxil. I took my first one today and I'm very nervous feeling with the same headache as I got from Zoloft. I know they're in the same family of SSRI's. Thanks.

Smiley_1995 replied: "Hi there: I dont have personal experience with taking any of the medications above, although I do know that I found a great website that has information about prescription drugs and medication. It is: Just type in the name of the drug. Hope this helps in some way. Good Luck :)"

Ladyofathousandfaces replied: "Well i took it at its highest dosage, and i did not get any side effects or any use from it. It is from the family of Proxic which i am back on at its highest doseage for my OCD. Everyone varys so much on the different medications, you will just have to see if it works for you, Zoloft is just a spin off from Prozic too. So you are still using the same family of that main medication."

C J replied: "I took paxil for a while and did not notice any effects whatsoever, it was like popping candy. Finally settled on Welbutrin. That just made me feel like myself again with NO side effects. :)"

ragtad replied: "I was switched from ativan to Paxil to help with my anxiety. But the side effects were so bad for me that I had to stop them after a week. I was not sleeping, couldn't eat, had headaches, lost about five pounds and had lots of anxiety attachs. Everyone is different and I hope that your experience with Paxil is a lot better than mine. If not then go back to your doc right away and try something else. I was switched to lexapro and am doing a lot better."

Slip K replied: "taking ppaxil is like taking nothing at all. its one of those drugs you have to force yourself to believe is working."

wtoddw1 replied: "Hormonal problems is the main problem women suffer from depression. Read Steven Hotze's book "Health, Hormones, and Happiness." He also has a website where you can test yourself. Search his name on the Internet."

What is the best Anti deppressaant for Ocd anxiety and deppresion and has no sexual side effects. forget Paxil? I took paxil for 5 years 20 mg and it is full of sexual side effects. Anything but paxil.

jim1624 replied: "The best anti-depressant is the Bible. Check out this website:"

Ms Cat replied: "Wellbutrin works well and doesn't have the sexual side effects. Unless you consider being MORE horny a side efect."

Kat replied: "Lexapro doesn't seem to have the side effects of some of the others at least for me."

Alice B replied: "Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc. Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level. But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc. The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them! Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to.... Extracted from Source."

walking728 replied: "Sorry to tell you that most of current antidepressants, paxil, prozac, zoloft, wellbutrin, and cymbalta all contain a warning about possible side effects. I like cymbalta, but everybody reacts differently. Tell your doctor you want viagra or ciallis if the Axil works well on your depression. Nothing like ED to help you depression. The cure is more depressing than the depression."

Does Paxil cause the severe sexual side effects that Prozac does? I asked my Dr to take me off prozac as it seemed to be causing far more negative side effects ( ie complete loss of sex drive, insomnia, anxiety extreme) So she put me on Paxil?? Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt it pretty much the same thing? Has anyone been on both and had less side effects with Paxil?

Erin W replied: "I was on Paxil and I forgot what sex was, it was horrible! Zoloft is better! Hope that helps and good luck!"

M G replied: "Paxill is the same type of thing. I had best results on Wellbutrin."

Elias H replied: "Don't take that stuff because it will put you in a emotional rollercoaster. Even if you drink go to an AA meeting, you don't have to stop drinking... Just go."

madfigs replied: "Yes, the sexual side affects can come with all of the SSRIs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selective_serotonin_reuptake_inhibitor#List_of_SSRIs). I think there are only a couple anti-depression meds that don't have sexual side affects (because they're not SSRIs). Wellbutrin is the only one I can think of."

busymom4boyz replied: "the side effect I experienced with paxil is the loss of emotion and lack of sex drive. it actually does not cause problems with anxiety that is what I was treated for was anxiety attacks. It did give me dry mouth also. I was on it for about a year....the lack of sex drive was a small price to pay for not having anxiety attacks though."

Hooter replied: "Yes any of that can.Either lower the dose or change the medicine to find one that will work for you.Remember most medicine will take a while to get into your system, for you to get adjusted to it."

Bill M replied: "Read the label or ask your pharmacist. Side effects will be different for each individual and most people won't have any."

Faith E replied: "When I was on the Paxil, the only negative side effect I experienced was when I ran out of pills. If I had to go even just one day without a dose I was a complete nauseous, dizzy, wreck. I read an article in some medicine magazine that suggested Paxil was addictive. I believe it. So, I hope this doesn't happen to you."

AvatarOne replied: "They're the same. It's a device the pharms, who are controlled by globalist, use to reduce the population, and they're going at it with every and any means. If they can't reduce the world population with drugs, biological agents, epidemic viruses and controlling your mind through the media, they'll resort to starting a nuclear war with the side-effect of "collateral damage" and reduce the population by the thousands or millions at a time."

wwe wrestling is ausome! replied: "i was on prozac when i was in high school and i hated it. it caused loss of sex drive completely. And my bf is on paxil and he is having with that med as well. So ya i think they have the same side effects either way if it was male or female."

How quickly do side effects show up when starting Paxil? I am going to stop taking fluoxetine, which is generic prozac, to Paxil. After reading endless horror stories about Paxil I want to get a different prescription. I have been recomended to ease up to 40 mg's of Paxil within roughly 12 days since that was the dosage I was on with Fluoxetine. I don't want to stop cold turkey but want to know how long before the possible wrath of Paxil side effects start. Thanks for the info everyone. But how soon should side effects be expected to show up? After one dose? After 3 days? I'm sure everyone has different experiences but how soon did you notice the side effects for you?

girk_420 replied: "I used to take paxil and it can be very great well except for within the first week to a month... but if you can make it through that your all good... just when taking paxil do not forget to take a dose of it. missing a dose will realy screw you up."

Jackie H replied: "I was on paxil for many years and I will tell you it is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET OFF OF IT!! Going on it, your body feels like when your foot is waking up after falling asleep. This lasts for several weeks. And once you are on full strength the headaches start if you miss even one dose. And it just gets worse from there (nightmares, nightsweats etc..). The only way I was able to get off paxil after many tries was to switch to zoloft. Over about a three week span, I weaned off the paxil while I weaned on to the zoloft. You may want to ask for zoloft instead. I'm so glad I switched."

gangadharan_nair replied: "Please see the web pages for more details on Paroxetine (generic name) Paxil (brand name)."

frederick t replied: "For me it took a while for side effects to show up. I DO NOT LIKE PAXIL. I will not take it again. I was OK for about a year or so but then my ex and I started noticing I didnt make decisions well and then I started to feel "evil" and have bad thoughts....NEVER acted on anything but I did not like how I felt on it. I stopped it cold turkey and went on Zoloft. Zoloft is MUCH better than Paxil."

XrrX replied: "side effect may show up after 5-7 days sometimes it takes longer. But generally serious side effect of AD will come after 2 weeks. Dont worry much about the side effect. Any drug has its cost but the effect is counted"

Is there any physical effects of Paxil and alcohol? Is there any physical effects of consuming alchol while taking Paxil. I am aware of all the mental effects but I am not sure about the physical effects. Thanks

A M replied: "Yes."

Tongue Tied & Twisted replied: "possibly vomiting and lethargy...I've seen it happen to a friend"

dne qt replied: "youll get drunk as god knows what, and you will puke your guts out. dont do it."

Ish1tTrains NOW WHAT replied: "seizure (convulsions); tremors, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching; problems with balance or coordination; agitation, confusion, sweating, fast heartbeat; or easy bruising or bleeding (such as a nosebleed). Less serious side effects may include: feeling nervous, restless, or unable to sit still; drowsiness, dizziness, weakness; sleep problems (insomnia); nausea, constipation, loss of appetite; weight changes; decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm; or dry mouth, yawning, or ringing in your ears. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect. these are some side effects, alcohal increases chances for effects"

SwEeT84 replied: "Yes, Thats why the say don't take consume them together."

cen104 replied: "Several. Liver issues is a major one, lungs, heart. All kind of effects."

Staci C replied: "I just got drunk a -lot- faster. Be careful."

Mark G replied: "I take paxil and i have notice none really paxil it self makes me sleepy"

highfivetoday replied: "Anytime you mix meds with alcohol there is are physical and mental risks. The biggest ones being, seizure, stroke, death... Be smart. If you know you are going to drink, talk to your doctor. Skip the dose for the day. Also- think about why you are using Paxil. It's an anti-depression.. Alchohol is a downer. Do you think that drinking is a good idea?"

peaches replied: "http://www.join-the-fun.com/paxil-and-alcohol.html"

What are the side effects of mixing paxil with alcohol? I know someone who has recently been prescribed the anti depressant paxil. What are potential side effects of taking paxil and drinking alcohol?

Autumn Storm replied: "It depends on the person, and how much you drink!! I would say no more than 3 drinks when on that stuff!!"

midnightoker replied: "potential death"

pr0ph3t1cl1v1ty replied: "Paxil + alcohol = disaster. I knew a guy a while back who was on Paxil for depression. He drank a bunch of beers and got set off because George Carlin was on the TV & a friend of his who had died years before was a big George Carlin fan. The guy started screaming, bawling, then ran outside, got in his truck and very recklessly drove off. His wife was frantic & asked me to go after him. So I got in my car & followed him, trying to get him to stop. He then tried to get into an accident with me by trying to get me to rear-end him, and then actually tried to run me off the road. At that point, I said screw it, he's on his own. He came back home a while later and was still very violently emotional. Paxil & alcohol definitely don't mix, but my real opinion is that Paxil is no good, period."

jocelyn replied: "If some one is taking an anti depressant of any kind they should not be drinking alcohol on top. You do one or the other, drink and drown yr sorrows, or take the medication and hope that works. I think if yr friend is drinking on top of the anti-deppressants then they are obviously not working. Most of them don't. If they was working then yr friend woudn't feel the need to use alcohol on top would he? Tell your friend to go back to the doctor. I think he needs some councerling to help him come to terms with why he feels so deppressed. There is always a reason. Nothing happens without a reason. If he can get to the bottom of that then he will feel better in general. Things are never quite as bad as we think they are. Wish yr friend good luck."

Amy W replied: "Don't do it! I just discovered this in the last few weeks. I am stopping the paxil, only after a few drinks I would black out and not remember hours on end. Even just one drink would make me loopy. Also watch becuase it makes you crave the alcohol more- I could drink it like water. Just do no do it!"

What are the side effects of Paxil? I have tried 4 anti-depressants so far and couldn't handle any ,because of the heavy side effects, that made me feel like a walking Zombie. I have been prescribed Paxil and was told that it had minimal side effects. What are they and for how long, until you get used to it?

ChibiStar replied: "You are not going to find an anti-depressant without side effects, some worse than others. As far as Paxil being minimal on side effects.. well I'm not sure why you would be told that since it all depends on the person more than the pill. You will find that people who start using anti-depressants have tried numerous types to either find the right fit or swear off pills entirely. It is basically a process of elimination. As far as the side effects of Paxil - well they will be the same as any anti-depressant, or should I say they can be. Paxil is an SSRI, so it functions like a lot of the popular antidepressants out there. For some Paxil is a lifesaver, for others a curse - just as you will find with the others. How long will it take to get used to the side effects? Like I said, that is based entirely on the person taking them. For some a few months, for others it might never happen. And then for some it will work like a charm and then stop as your body builds up a Resistance to it. The best thing you can do if anti-depressants are the road you seek is to take it one day at a time, write down every side effect you experience and hope for the best. You can also try discussing starting on a very mild dose with your doctor, that way switching (Discontinuing) won't be quite as bad if Paxil doesn't work for you. "

Do paxil side effects fade after a few weeks? I've been on Paxil the past week. My doctor prescribed it to me for anxiety & depression, it seems to be working well. However, it makes me feel kind of weird. Sometimes throughout the day I feel kind of dizzy, tired, or just a little "off." It's making me not hungry as well. Everyone I've talked to said it takes a few weeks for the medicine to fully work the way its supposed to. Has anyone else experienced this with Paxil? Do the strange side effects go away after a couple weeks?

Out of control replied: "Many times side effects will go away after a few weeks, but not always. If you're taking it in the morning perhaps taking it before bed will get you away from feeling the side effects. Do NOT suddenly stop taking paxil because of side effects or any other reason. This is one of the worst med to suddenly stop taking. Good luck!"

artsy08dream replied: "It takes six weeks to get totally into your system. Some of the symptoms you describe decrease or disappear during this time period. Give the medicine a chance to work. Remember all meds have side effects, some worse than others, so there is a balancing that goes on between the symptoms and the side effects."

s s replied: "i think it does take time to show effects...why dont you wait for it? and i think these side effects do go away, or maybe you get used to it, or dont mind since it helps so much otherwise. the negative effects seem lesser than the positive ones. i think your doctor might help you more if you explain this to him/her..because every case is different and every person responds differently to different medicines."
