Wellbutrin weight loss? Bunch of questions related to this.... How exactly does Wellbutrin cause a person to lose weight? What's the approximate time table for the weight loss, i.e. how long before I notice a loss? What can a person do to encourage the loss along, besides the obvious--exercise and healthy eating. More meals, but smaller? Avoid certain types of foods? I'm chock full of questions. I've been on Wellbutrin for 2 weeks because other SSRIs have caused weight gain and severe lethargy. The Wellbutrin has upped my energy so much, I'd stay on it just for that! Thanks! PS I'm on Wellbutrin XL 300 mg/day.

obscuremagic replied: "there isnt a time table or any guaranteed weight loss schedule at all. im suprised youre even losing weight from it, i know some people that have gained weight with it just like all the other antidepressants. i mean, good that youre not gaining, but there is no way to say how much you will lose or when because every one reacts differently to medicines."

sterces518255 replied: "I am taking welbutrin as well, the reason you can lose weight is because it is considered an amphetimine (look it up im not lying) And I know what you mean about the energy, but at first I had mild insomnia"

~Concerned~ replied: "I think the weight loss comes from over all feeling better. Just like you said your more up beat and have more energy that alone will help you. Plus wellbutrin helps with chemicals in the brain that may cause us to have racey thoughts....here you can focus more! Good Luck!"

Wellbutrin XL weight loss/eating disorder? Ok here's the deal: I went on Zoloft at the beginning of September to help with freshmen year college anxiety. It worked wonders for my social anxiety, but it did lead to a 15+ pound weight gain. This weight gain was NOT the "freshmen 15." I am extremely obsessive about my weight and refuse to eat the junk they serve here. I don't eat any meat besides fish, and my biggest meal of the day consists of tuna on salad with a lot of veggies and low fat balsamic vinaigrette dressing. I went to my doctor with my concerns and she said that the Zoloft probably messed with my metabolism. So she put me on Wellbutrin XL (generic). I have been on 300 mg for about four weeks now. Despite exercising for an hour each day and eating healthily, I feel as though I have lost absolutely nothing. I am scared to weigh myself because whenever I do now, I go into another fit of depression! I do not have the appetite suppressant feeling that a lot of people talk about on Wellbutrin. I do however feel as though I am extremely alert and focused and get a lot more done in the day, which is probably a good sign of my metabolism returning to normal? I have also been suffering from a compulsive "eating disorder not otherwise specified," chew & spit for about a year and a half. If you don't know, it's exactly what it sounds like, when I am stressed or sad I will chew a bunch of sweets or forbidden foods up and then spit them out. Gross I know. I have read that doing this can raise insulin levels and make it very difficult to lose weight (although I actually lost weight when I wasn't on any anti-depressants). Since being on Wellbutrin I have been able to start weening off of this disgusting behavior, but do still mess up sometimes. My question is, if I fully quit this eating disorder behavior, continue to diet and exercise, but still take Wellbutrin (I feel like it's helping), will I eventually be able to lose this weight? I feel like I should have seen results by now, but maybe I have to be more patient... I have heard that Wellbutrin is not supposed to cause weight GAIN but will it actually allow me to LOSE if I keep working at it? I couldn't lose on Zoloft no matter how hard I tried. Thanks for any answers.

MomOnAMission replied: "This may so crazy....but try cleansing with this tea. It's 100% organic and it shouldn't mess with your meds. You can drink it like regular tea. No need to stop at anytime. People have different results with the tea. The tea cleanses your whole body (digestive tract, blood, liver, and lungs) allowing your body to heal itself. The tea has helped people with weight loss, detox, stomach distress, constipation, bloating, diabetics, cleaning out nicotine in smoking and non-smokers, high blood pressure, acid reflux, indegestion, and people with insomnia. You never know...your anxiety meds may work better and u may still be able to lose weight too. Not starving yourself and regular exercise on top of the Tea should help."

nouveau.style replied: "Hello, I cannot really answer your question but I'm in the exact same situation! I had a baby this year and found it really hard to lose the rest of the baby weight (last 15 pounds). This made me incredibly depressed because I worked hard (and also had a mild eating disorder) to get to a good shape. Well, my doctor put me on Prozac and I immediately could not control my appetite! I started to gain a few pounds so I stopped it right there (I had gained weight on Prozac in the past, so not sure why I entertained it again). Now, he put me on Wellbutrin XL. So far no change in weight, it's been 3 weeks. I actually feel hungrier again which is not a good sign. I don't feel like I have no appetite. Actually, with me I don't lose weight from not eating anyway because my body then goes to starvation mode and stores fat. I've gotten a really dry mouth and I'm urinating all the time! I'm not sure if I'll keep on it. How is your anxiety? Mine seems okay, but I feel a bit restless and tense on the wellbutrin, like it might trigger an anxiety attack anytime. I'm not sure. I'm giving it 2 more weeks and will discontinue if not working. I was so looking forward to the weight loss. Maybe it's just way to early to tell. If you want to chat/compare notes because we are only a week apart in treatment and on same dosage, you can email me at p.s I've also done the chew and spit, but promptly stopped when my husband told me how disgusting it is! ha. I've also heard that wellbutrin shouldn't be prescribed to those with eating disorders because of the seizure risk. I'm a little worried as I didn't tell my doctor about my eating behaviors."

Wellbutrin xl question? My doctor just prescribed 150 mg of wellbutrin xl for me and he said after a week i can up it to 300 mg if i wanted so that would mean taking two of the 150's until i go back to see him in a month. My question is i take them BOTH at the same time not half way through the day right?A friend thinks i should take one in the morning and another at night and i think because its XL that the effect is meant to last 24 hours and should be taken once a day all 300 mg. Also has anyone had weight loss or loss of appetite from this med.?

socalgal replied: "You take them both at once. I didn't feel hungy when I took it."

patty20 replied: "You shuould take 150 mg in the morning and 150 mg at night. Better yet called your dr to let him know, how you should take your medication. Dr. will be able to give you the best answer."

Melissa replied: "Yes.....I went from 168 to 147 since May of this year. The meds have helped me stop snacking and also decrease my appitite when eating meals. I'm not sure about your dosage questions, you need to ask a pharmacist or your doctor about this. Don't rely on a friend's advice unless they are an MD. I also used "Medifast" during that time...it works, but is an extremely aggressive diet."

sarge927 replied: "I was prescribed the same dosages of Welbutrin XL after I lost my first wife in a car accident. The doctor told me it didn't matter if I took both 150mg pills at the same time or if I took one in the morning and one at night. So I'd say do what's most convenient for you. And yes, I did experience loss of appetite and weight loss, but I'm not sure how much of that was the Welbutrin and how much of that was just being depressed. The good thing was I had little to no sexual side effects...but we won't go there."

LFG for bar replied: "I was taking 300mg and wound up with a brain tumor and heart disease at 16 years old. I also went from 105 pounds to about 80 because of loss of appetite. I think you should stick with the 150mg or smaller. But if you want to take all 300mg, be sure to eat and take them at once. Skipping a day or abusing the drug will cause troubles. Also, if you are taking something else, be sure you are tested to make sure the drugs won't clash or cause harm. I felt better after not taking it and just talking my issues out. Try something else. I don't suggest Lexapro it's just as sh*tty of a drug. I heard Xanax is wonderful, but hopefully you'll be happier soon and able to live without deadly drugs."

lovelee1 replied: "Loss of appetite, loss of sex drive, suicidal thoughts. I was on 150 mg of Wellbutrin years ago and I felt crazier on it than I did before I started taking it. I'm as sexually aggressive as a man but when I was on that stuff it was like my sex drive went on vacation. There was nothing my boyfriend could do to get me in the mood. All I did was cry. I felt weird all the time and finally I stopped taking it. I've heard good things about Paxil, and Prozac, and Xanax but I've never taken any of those."

dreamer replied: "this is why you call your doctor and not people on here !"

none replied: "I take 300 mg in 150mg increments too. My psychiatrist says take one in the morning and then the other around lunch time, I don't remember or maybe he didn't say why not to take them at the same time. But he did say that if I take Wellburtrin too late in the day it can keep you up at night. No appetite or weight changes, been taking it for over a year."

Tempest88 replied: "Ask your doctor or pharmacist. Wellbutrin causes an decrease in the threshold for seizures and thats why they split the doses up. Usually they recommend you take one in the morning and the second one at noon. That way it doesn't keep you up at night. The XL indicates it is slow release and melts slowly in your system. Doesnt' have to cover 24hrs exactly. It is NOT a weight loss drug. It will help you stop smoking...it's other name is xyban. It is good for depression with mimimal side effects. When you feel less depressed you can exercise more and that helps weight loss. Some people report loss of appetite from it, but it is a side effect not a purpose of the drug. Follow directions, don't abuse it, and get counselling to support you in the issues you are dealing with. Good luck."

beastrea1070 replied: "I was told once a day by my doctor. You should do what he thinks is best. You and him together make your life better. Not one against the other unless your doctor is an idiot."
