How long does it take for my blood pressure medication (Atenolol)to start working?? My doc just gave me a prescription for Atenolol 50mg.Taken once a day.I just started this medication on Thursday but my blood pressure is still very high with no signs of decrease.Does this stuff take a while to start working or will my doc probably have to raise the dosage? Thanks.

Landon C replied: "i take 100mg ... and it started working in a few hrs."

Daniel replied: "You can expect the full effect on blood pressure after about 1-2 weeks. However, the blood pressure lowering effect of atenolol is limited and most patients need more than one medication to effectively treat hypertension. So, you might need to add another medication to reach your goal."

Does anyone know if it is safe to self-wean from Atenolol and if Hawthorn and garlic would be ok instead? Hawthorn can help regulate arrhythmia or an irregular heart rate due to its toning support of the electrical activity of the heart.

Does atenolol work for stage fright? How long before performance/speech should you take it? How much? P.S. This is for extreme anxiety/panic physical symptoms, not emotional/mental symptoms. Positive thinking, practice, and breathing would not work.

Does Atenolol effect blood sugar levels in non diabiatics ? I am taking 100mg Tenormin O.D for essential hypertension.

Pappy replied: "No, I have been on it for thirteen years, and have no problem with sugar."

TweetyBird replied: "Tenormin (atenolol) is a beta blocker not an antidiabetic med. It has no effect on serum glucose. What is "O.D"????"

Dr.in.da H replied: "actually b blockers MAY decrease suger level. if your blood suger is high, then you must have diabetes in which case its preferable NOT to use b blockers since they MASK the symptomes of HYPO-glycemia, i.e.b blockers decrease "palpitation" which is a "useful warning" sign for diabetic who may develops low blood suger because of medications. so if a diabetic developed a low blood suger (from whatever reasons) he won't feel it (because his heart wont be racing because he is taking b blocker), so this low blood suger will go un-noticed with disastrous consequences. I hope this helped. Also if you have high blood pressure & you are a little obese, you are liable to have diabetes too called syndrome-X). It doesnt mean that every body who takes tenormin will have low blood suger, but it may happen & it could be a contributing factor."

Saffy replied: "I'm diabetic and on Atenolol they dont actually lower your bloody sugar or heighten it they just mask the effects of a hypoglyceamia, however, if you're like me with the beta blockers they can make you feel very tired so lack of energy can cause higher sugar levels as you wouldnt be doing as much activity!"

notaclue replied: "I have taken tenoramin (atenolol) for over 25 years and I haven't had a problem with it! I have been on other ones too like Topal, Clonidine ,etc but the Atenolol seems to work best for me. The Clonidine almost snuffed me out! It's a nasty drug!"
