cipro causing yeast infection? I have taken 5 out of my 10 days of cipro for a UTI...my UTI symptoms are gone, but it has caused a bad yeast infection!! Now I've skipped 2 doses because of it...should I start back on the cipro or be concerned about getting this yeast infection cured? I've treated it with OTC and its finally starting to feel better. Have been taking acidophilous all along but it didn't help I guess!
katherineduchoveney replied: "Skipping doses of an antibiotic is a big no no. You are far less likely to have the infection go away now. You need to call your Dr.'s office and let them know what is going on so they can advise you appropriately."
jjcslilprincess replied: "Keep taking cipro until you cant get something else. UTI can be every serious! I would try OTC Vagasil for now. Call your Dr on call you could end up with septicemia! A blood stream infection and hospitalized. VERY serious!"
deaddolly replied: "Don't skip antibiotics. Eat yogurt and drink cranberry juice and drink a lot of water."
Nurse Practitioner 31 years replied: "Typically, once you start an antibiotic, you should finish it; stopping after a few days just increases the chance of developing resistant bacteria. Since you have already missed two days I would suggest getting your urine rechecked to be sure the infection is gone. You may try monistat OTC or request your health care provider for a tablet called diflucan. Next time, ask for the diflucan prescription at the time you are given the antibiotic, just in case you need it. It is OK to use monistat while you are taking an antibiotic."
Cherish replied: "Absolutely keep on w/ your antibiotic. Even if your symptoms are gone it doesn't mean that everything has completely cleared up. Keep on w/ the OTC miconazole treatments. You'll be better off doing a 7 day treatment (even though its a little bit less convenient) but you'll have ongoing daily doses to combat the continuing antibiotic treatment. You may even need to do a second round once the Cipro is done. It might also help for you to get an extra tube of external itch cream to keep things more comfortable during the day. OR .. washing the area with cool water once or twice during the day will help a great deal also and you can do that help stay comfortable before evening doses of the miconazole (i/e monistat etc.) Yeast infection is the worst! Drives you CRAZY! Hope you feel better soon !!"
albert c replied: "The list of side effects for this group of drugs is staggering, and my wife's new doctor (whom she found to help her with the painful side effects she is experiencing) said that yeast infections are included.
Get off this drug immediately! Cipro is a very powerful drug that should only be used if your life is threatened. It can have crippling side effects. There are many other remedies and antibiotics for UTI's.
Please go to this website and read about the things doctors and the drug companies aren't telling you: .
I am sharing this information so that maybe even one less person might not have to suffer the pain caused by these drugs that should be taken off the market."
taking a medication for kidney infection? Could Cipro cause a yeast infection? I took the meds for kidney infection and now i have bad dryness crack like lips which ppl say is from possibly yeast infection killing both good and bad yeast. Should i see my Dr for this or could i do something at home?
Zambiti replied: "Yes. Any med to attack bacterial infection can cause yeast infection. These meds also deplete your system of the healthy bacteria which keep yeast at bay. Yeast loves open space and no competition.
1st - start taking a good probiotic, preferably refrigerated with live bacteria. I like Natural Factors:
2nd - for immediate knock down of yeast, take Grapefruit Seed Extract:
Nutribiotic is the preferred brand. You can take it in either liquid or pill form. If in the upper digestive track, liquid is more effective. Pills work too though, and don't taste as bad.
3rd - cut back on sugar. Sugar feeds yeast. Sugar substitutes are not a good option unless Stevia (which doesn't metabolize as sugar)
If you go to a doctor for yeast, they are likely to give you more antibiotics, which will help short term, but set up a terrible cycle of infections. Best to treat the yeast naturally.
Best prices for the products I've seen is at iHerb (where the links are). If you do get from there instead of local health food store, use coupon code KES097 at checkout for $5 off. Shipping is free over $60, only $4 otherwise. They have very fast service. (not affiliated, just where I've found the cheapest prices)
Hope you are feeling better soon."
Antibiotics for UTI causing yeast infection? Oh it is so unfair to be a woman! I am almost finished treating my very first UTI with tough Cipro antibiotics. Today I woke up with that "burning itch" most women know and hate. No doubt that I am now forming a yeast infection. Go figure.
I am wondering if I can start treating this tomorrow (today is my last day on antibiotics) and/or if there are any measures I can take to help combat the infection before it gets bad.
Thanks.
freta_4 replied: "Call the dr. that gave you the antibiotics you may even be able to start treating today gl.........."
sdg-FNP replied: "This is not uncommon at all. Sorry you're going through it!
Actually, you could start some of the over-the-counter remedies right now, and not to wait until tomorrow. They will not counteract each other, so don't worry about it.
A lot of times, I'll call in a script for Diflucan tablets 150 mg. #2: Take one today, and repeat in 3 days. That usually does the trick and much less messy than the OTC stuff.
Herbal or "all natural" treatments can be somewhat helpful (although they don't have very good data), but are typically useless in an ACUTE stage. They can more likely help only prophylactically or preventively.
All the best!"
Momster replied: "Pick up some acidophilus pills and start taking them (in fact, you should always take them when on antibiotics...but not at the same time because the antibiotic just kills the acidophilus...you need to take them a few hours apart). That won't cure the infection though. You can certainly wait to treat it, using benedryl for any itching you have right now. It is not likely to go away on its own though...so I would start the yeast treatment ASAP. In the US, most treatments are over the counter such as Monistat, but if that is not successful, there are prescription treatments that may work better, such as Terezol (cream or suppository) or Difulcan (an oral pill).
At any rate, try the Monistat first and see if that does the trick. I recommend the vaginal suppositories rather than the cream because some folks are allergic to the cream base and actually think their infection has gotten worse, but it's an allergy instead.
Good luck!"
ripsgracie replied: "Unfortunately, antibiotics are one of the major factors that cause a yeast infection...and men don't know the 1/2 of it! You can get OTC Monistat to help treat the symptoms or you could request Diflucan from your doctor."
cole replied: "you just have to call the dr office and tell them you have a yeast infection from the antibiotics they prescribed so they can call you in diflucan. Its a one time pill for a yeast infection. Always when you get antibiotics have your dr write this prescription for you. Because us girls almost always get yeast infections on antibiotics. Yes you can start it now."
Brutally Honest replied: "The only thing you can do is to start with an OTC yeast treatment TONIGHT. Use it at bedtime and be VERY sure not to have sex until your symptoms clear up completely.
Also, try using LIVE acidophilus (found in most cold sections of health food stores). Take it 2-3 times daily. It will help the bacteria in your vagina to balance out and fight the yeast in conjunction to the Monistat (or whatever you end up using OTC)."
thral16 replied: "okay.. so.. here's your problem.. you're taking antibiotic to fight UTI right? but causes another infection..=) yeast infection due to antibiotics is because the antibiotic kills the bacteria which causes UTI, but while killing that bacteria it also kills the good one..=) drink lots and lots of water to increase urine output..=) this increases chance to heal faster.. and ask your doctor about the drug..=)"
foydancer216 replied: "i was on many heavy anti-biotics after a big surgery, and yes yeast infections are common. Try going to a health food store and getting a bottle of PRO-BIOTICS. it's not a brand or anything, but a pro-biotic puts good bacteria back into your system that the anti-biotics killed along with the bad bacteria. Check with your doctor first though, and maybe call your OB/GYN to see what he/she thinks. Hope this helps. In the meantime, drink cranberry juice, good for UTIs and yeast infections!"
mariee64 replied: "My ENT told me because I get alot of sinus infections to eat a cup of yogurt every day I take an antibiotic. It actually works but I'm not sure if it will help once a yeast infection has taken hold. She said to eat plain yogurt but I have used any flavored with active cultures and it still works."
Answer Fairy replied: "Best way to combat a yeast infection is an ounce of prevention. Eat a yogurt with active cultures every day. I require a high protein breakfast, so I usually eat my yogurt as a snack between breakfast and lunch.
Antibiotics often cause yeast infections. You can start treating it right away. In the event that the treatment burns, you can use organic plain yogurt. Here's how it works...
Take a tampon, push it about half way out of the applicator. Dip the end in yogurt and insert into the vagina. I know it sounds gross, but I swear it works like a charm, immediately soothes and relives the itching and it is an all-natural alternative to the chemicals in monestat. I have ridiculously sensitive skin, so all yeast infections burn me really bad. My doctor toldme about the yogurt option. It's also much less expensive, lol. If you think I am a weirdo, look up all natural alternatives to treating yeast infections and I promise you will see that a lot of people use this option. Also, with yogurt, there is no risk of drug interference.
Good luck."
smartmomo4 replied: "Call the office, ask if you can take OTC AZO( for urinary health/cranberry tablets) next time. Today you can also help you pH levels by drinking lots of water eating yogurt (contains enzymes), discontinue sodas, and stay away from spicy foods. This regime is also better for you kidneys long term as UTI's can reoccur with the onset of the initial."
grateful living replied: "rush out and get yourself some probiotic acidophilus. It replenishes the good bacteria that is lost when you take anti-biotics. From now on you should get in the habit of taking it automatically when you are prescribed antibiotics. It has helped me everytime no matter what type of anti-biotics I was taking.
You can also try the Greek yogurt milk, brand name is Kefir. It supplements the acidophilus tablets. I give it to my toddler because she is very sensitive to all medications so I always give her both whenever she gets sick to counteract the bad side effects of the medicines.
By the way, isn't Cipro a bit harsh for a UTI. I'm no physician but that seems drastic for a common infection. Maybe you could ask next time if there is something a little milder, hopefully there won't be a next time.
I hope you feel better, and try these before you run out and get one of those quick fix yeast products. Those do more damage then good and you can reference that info online. Good luck"
dimond703 replied: "Well you are right we have to go through so much.
Here is a little tip for the future. If you are on antibiotics, you should eat a yoghurt every time you take your medication. The yoghurt helps to prevent a yeast infection. Which is common when you take antibiotics.
To treat this you can get over the counter medication for example a very good one is "Monistat". Make sure to read the instructions.
Hope you feel better."
Can a bad yeast infection cause a late or missed period? I am 15 days late, never missed a period besides pregnancy with my daughter. Last week I took 7 test from 5-10 days late and all negatives. I think I might be pregnant but I dont want to get my hopes up.
I got a yeast infection from some antibiotics I took for a bad kidney infection. I was hospitalized for four in a half days. And then had to take 1000mg of Cipro for 10 days. I finished the medication about a week before my period. Im back 100% again, but still no period.
I have a history of being severly ill and never have my period been this late or just not come at all. Most of my illness comes from stress so I know its not due to stress, I faithfully get a menstrual every month.
Tank replied: "It is very unlikely or least possible to missed a period due to yeast infection. Yes ciprofloxacin can cause superinfection causing the Yeast(fungus) to proliferate. There are other causes of missed period like anemia, pathology of uterus, effects of drugs period may become irregular long before menopause- you haven't mention your age. If you are missing your period for the first time you can watch for some months, many a times they are harmless and all women gets jittery whenever they missed the period, worried about pregnancy or or worried about attending the menopause. If you really want to regulate it medicine can regulate it also."
Should I go to the ER, Regular doctor, or OBGYN for a UTI with a yeast infection/herpes outbreak? I have been on antibiotics now for 5 days, and after running out of pain pills, my back pain is like 10x worse. It hurts to just move. I just want to like punch my back to rid myself of the pain. So I think its getting worse, because it wasn't in my kidneys before. Can a person get immune to antibiotics after taking them numerous time? (i've had like 8 utis before and have been given cipro before) Well the anitibiotics caused a yeast infection which i self treated with boric acid. I had a herpe outbreak at the same time, which left my vagina swollen, burning, and just nasty, Anyways, my vagina pain has cleared up. Its no longer swollen, but still itchy, a little burning, and some spots are raw (I guess from the herpes, but i've been taking my medicine for it religiously) I mean it looks semi-normal, its just REALLY itchy/burny. So my question is should i see a regular doctor, OBGYN, or just go to the ER?
I also have been running a fever mostly low-grade (99-101), have had extreme fatigue (i've been sleeping like 14 hrs a day) and some nausea, but luckily i already had a prescription for it.

angel_of_music_1690 replied: "Regular doctor, it's not going to kill you. Leave the ER for people with emergencies."
Mountain Girl replied: "You can definitely become immune to antibioticis, especially Cipro. There are even special Cipro-immune strains of bacterial infections now that weren't around a few years ago! My advice is to wait to go to your OBGYN first thing in the morning. They should be able to work you in for this if you call at 8am. It will be MUCH less expensive and they can treat you with more expertise. It's nothing life-threatening (and that's what the ER is really for). Try soaking in a warm bath (with no bubble bath or anything irritating) to help with your back pain. And try to distract yourself by doing something. Yeah, that sounds impossible I know. I was in this same situation last week (minus the herpes) and had to find a way. It's best if you can take a sleeping pill (or 2) and just go to sleep. I really hope you feel better soon. I know it's agony. But your OBGYN will be able to treat it best. A fever that low should be treated with Tylenol and is definitely infection-related. Be sure to call your OBGYN at 8AM & say you really need to be worked in. Hope this helps."
ps.i_love_u replied: "I'd go to the OB because thats the doctor that handles things down there. As for using boric acid for the yeast infection..I had no idea it was used for that and it shocked me when I did a search on it.
Boric acid capsules used as vaginal suppositories can be an effective remedy for yeast infections in some women. Boric acid acidifies the vagina, which restores the natural balance of bacteria and yeast.
Boric acid can be particularly useful for people with chronic yeast infections that havent responded to over-the-counter or prescription anti-fungal medications. Some pharmacies can prepare boric acid capsules for you. Ask for size 0 gelatin capsule filled with 600 mg of powdered boric acid in each capsule.
One capsule is typically inserted at night before going to bed. Some people may need to take it in the morning and the evening. It can be taken with a vitamin E capsule or used with vitamin E oil to reduce the chances of irritation.
Yeast infection treatment typically takes three to seven days. Chronic yeast infections may require a longer treatment. Using boric acid suppositories for more than a week can cause irritation of the vulva and vagina.
Because boric acid is a strong substance there are some precautions associated with its use. Consider the following:
Boric acid is toxic and should never be taken orally or placed on cuts or open wounds.
Side effects may include severe irritation and burning.
Boric acid should never be used during pregnancy.
You may be experiencing the burning because of the boric acid.Did you use vitamin E with it to reduce the risk of irritation? Also with having an outbreak of herpes you probably really irritated what was already irritated and just caused it to be alot worse than it normally is. Has your OB told you that its ok to use the acid along with your normal medications to treat a yeast infection?"
vivianeq replied: "Antibiotic resistance is common, especially with UTIs. If you have been on antibiotics for 5 days and don't feel miraculously better in the UTI department then you are probably resistant.
Bad signs that you still have a UTI are:
- blood in pee
- low back pain
- fever
- stinky pee
You need to call whoever prescribed the antibiotics right away, there will be an after hours line you can call. Also, if you like, ask the doctor for "Prosed" for the UTI pain.
Contrary to what certain uninformed commenters have said this is serious. UTIs typically infect the bladder, then the kidneys, then the blood. Blood infections are a BIG deal. And you don't want long term kidney damage from a really bad UTI.
You need to see someone soon. So if you can't get help from the after hours line, you need to find an urgent care clinic. Most ERs are pretty miserable and I think all you need is a prescription for a different antibiotic. Good luck!"
Please help me out!!!!!!!? Could Cipro cause a yeast infection? I took the meds for kidney infection and now i have bad dryness crack like lips which ppl say is from possibly yeast infection killing both good and bad yeast. Should i see my Dr for this or could i do something at home?
P J replied: "yes it does cause a yeast infection, contact your doctor for diflucan it is a pill to kill off the yeast, you can also eat and douche with yougart or buttermilk. not flavored"
Dr Hrvacic replied: "Tell him in any case, but i doubt its being caused by the meds. Was the kidney infection bad. Why are you taking cipro for kidney. Cipro is used only to treat life threating bacterial infections. Well no yeast infection is not a side effect some Im going to say no, the meds are not casing it or at least are not supposed to. It causes dryness, but i doubt it will not cause yeast infection. It wouldn't be used if it caused other problems, like that."
Sara K replied: "Antibiotics often cause yeast infections. If you've been diagnosed with a yeast infection in the past, go ahead and treat it with over-the-counter meds. If (and from the way you ask your question, I suspect this is the case) you've never had a physician's diagnosis of a yeast infection before, you should go get checked out. Attend to this soon, as not only is it very uncomfortable, the longer you leave it untreated, the more likely you are to have trouble curing it. Good luck, and I hope you feel better!"
Andrea replied: "I would go to a doctor. I get yeast infections whenever I take any medicine it seems like. And I have done the whole home remedy thing and it seems to come back quick. And I know you want to hear a simple answer online, because I have a BV and want to here the same thing, but a doctor has to test it. It could be anything and you don't want to risk it. Too much is out there now adays. I had a kidney infection and was in the hospital where the gave me meds... later that week I had a BV and yeast infection. Its an on going process it seems like."

Yeast infection, bacterial vaginitis *and* a UTI ... is my vagina committing suicide? No, I don't really think my vagina's trying to off itself, but clearly, I've made it very unhappy somehow.
I've had a yeast infection for 7 weeks and had tried everything to get rid of it. Even 5 doses of Diflucan in a row couldn't kill it off. (I did all the eating yogurt and taking acidophilus stuff too.) I thought it was a resistant strain, until today, when I went into a doctor for like the fourth time.
Before this visit, I hadn't had a full exam done down there just quick swabs to check for yeast. Well, today, the doctor checked me out.
Her initial reaction?
"Oh my." She found yeast, but she also found a bitchin' case of bacterial vaginosis. Oh...I also tested positive for what I can only assume is a pretty new UTI (since I haven't experienced any UTI symptoms yet).
I'm taking Diflucan, Flagyl and Cipro to take care of all my problems now, and the doc says the only reason Diflucan didn't kill the yeast last time around was because the BV was making my vagina a veritable breeding ground for nasty lil' microbes.
Whew! That was long-winded. So, on to my questions:
Have any of ya'll had any combination of yeast infection, BV and/or UTI at the same time before?
Does anyone know how to explain what might have caused both these problems to arise at the same time?
Any advice on how to prevent both BV and yeast infections in the future? I'm taking a probiotic with nice, friendly "good" bacteria in it already and have amped up my yogurt consumption. Any tips besides that?
By the way, if anyone tells me to "stop sleeping around" or to "shower, dummy," go play in traffic. I've had the same partner for 2 years, and we use condoms, and I shower and clean really well (but not with soap because that's a healthy vagina no-no) daily.
Hey guys...no need to bother telling me how to treat yeast infections, by the way. I've had this one for 7 weeks and have researched EVERYTHING. (Turns out, the BV was the only reason the YI wouldn't go away.)
And to the first answerer ... I agree. The world is totally dying.
***SHAMUS*** replied: "OOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMGGGGGGGGGG Whats wrong with people! the world is dying"
foss replied: "i've been cleaning my vagina with an anti bacterial soap since i can remember. and i've never had any of these problems. maybe that is why your getting them?
i was always told to clean with a soap with no fragrance. ??
but i 've never had any other problems besides a uti that i get occasionally."
dbraunofva replied: "Hmmmm...either you've been doing some really crazy things with your vagina or something really odd is going on somewhere else. You need to get your doctor to get out from between your legs and look at the rest of you. Why is your body suddenly so vulnerable to these infections? That's the question that you need answered.
Are you sure you didn't try something really crazy like using a peppermint candy as a suppository before oral sex? Do you use condoms every time? How is your boyfriend feeling?"
Kate replied: "Wow, that does not sound like a very pleasant thing to be going through!
I have never had a combination of the three, but there was a period of 2-3 years where I was having constant yeast infections. No sooner would I get rid of one, then a few weeks later I would have another. The over-the-counter medicines weren't working at all, and even though the Diflucan worked, it didn't stop it from coming back a few weeks later. Regardless of the season it kept coming back in cycles, and I was extremely fed up.
Like you I had tried eating my weight in yogurt, made sure I didn't sit around in a wet bathing suit, dried off "down there" thoroughly after each shower, didn't use irritating soaps, etc. Those things did help with the severity of the infections, but did not stop them from happening.
Finally, since I was seeing my gynecologist anyway because I was going to start taking birth control pills, I asked her if she had any idea why I was having so many infections. She said that women who have really irregular periods (like I was having) often have problems with yeast infections, because the hormones disrupt their whole reproductive system and the pH of their vagina is wacky, making it a real breeding ground for persistent infections.
They did an ultrasound on my ovaries and uterus and discovered that I had a fist-sized ovarian cyst... a major cause of hormonal disruption! Once the cyst went away, so did my yeast infections, so for me at least I believe that was the reason.
If you don't think your hormones could be a potential cause (I was having a lot of abdominal pain, thought it was constipation... surprise, cyst!), take a look at your diet. Do you eat a lot of sugar? One of the things my general doctor suggested to me before I saw the gyno was to cut down on my refined carb and sugar intake, because too much sugar will mess with your body's pH and make you more susceptible to yeast infections. Also, if you use pads during your period, try using tampons because the pads create a moist environment, which will definitely help any potential violators grow and flourish.
Finally, make sure you are wearing 100% cotton panties. Polyester does NOT breathe, and will trap moisture close to the skin. Cotton breathes and keeps you dry. If you already wear 100% cotton, try changing them more often. I am not suggesting that you are nasty and don't change them enough... it's just that some people have very sensitive areas, and what is "enough" for everyone else might not be enough for you.
Anyway, I hope that helps, and good luck in the future!"
Kaley replied: "Wow..
I have never had a UTI, but I have had a yeast infection and BV together at the same time. It wasn't fun, and I thought I had a stubborn strain of a yeast infection. I was given a cream to insert into my vagina for the yeast infection and pills (I don't remember the name) for BV.
Have you tried the AZO brands? They are pills in with the vitamins or feminine products (depending on what store you go to). They are about 6 dollars, but they really help. I use the AZO Yeast and it prevents me from getting yeast infections (and I never eat yogurt!). Every time I even feel a little itch down there, I swallow one of the pills and it goes away!
I know they make AZO UTI too. I heard they work well at preventing and treating the symptoms (but it doesn't cure the UTI or yeast infection), but I've never had a UTI so I don't use them. Drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry supplements can help prevents UTI's as well.
As for your BV, my doctor said I got it from wiping wrong. I know it's gross, but hey, I'm not the only one who does it. Make sure to wipe front to back (even though it's easier to wipe back to front). Your feces particles can get in your vagina and can cause BV. Seriously. It's gross, but thats the most common cause of it.
I hope I helped! Good luck and I really recommend the AZO products at preventing yeast infections and UTI's!"
Bolt replied: "I'll just add a couple of thoughts:
1 - have you been checked for diabetes? Frequent infections are a common symptom, and often they are difficult to treat while blood glucose remains high and uncontrolled. Don't assume that because you eat well, exercise, and are not overweight that you can not be diabetic - lots of people are surprised by a diabetes diagnosis that way :-)
2 - condom use, ingredients in some lubrications, and often the use of spermicide, can encourgae vaginal infections. You might want to stop the use of spermicides completely, change to a lubricant with different ingredients, and/or change the type of condom material being used. My wife's GYN had us change what we were using and it has worked out very well :-)"
Help! I have been in hospital 2 times with "kidney stone pains", nausea, and now heartburn! Need to know cause I have been in the hospital before, due to kidney stones. But the past two weeks have been very strange for me. I have been in the ER twice for "kidney stone pain", I was incredibly nauseated, and puked in the hospital parking lot, I was prescribed "Ciprofloxacin" because I also had a Urinary track infection, & it's been over a week since I was in the hospital. I keep having themost intense heartburn/chest pains, but I want to wait it out at home. I have also been more anxious this week, more than any other week in my life, & I have no idea why. I am not sure if the medicine causes this? I have also switched my diet, as i am now a vegan, & do not eat meat, though I used to eat Pizza Hut chicken wings like there was no tomorrow, so maybe the uric acid has something to do with this. I have a yeast infection now because of taking the "cipro" but my heartburn lasts for about 12 hours, non stop, and hurts & makes me short of breath. I take tums, senna laxitive, and advil pm, nothing helps!!

In either case, I would mention it to the doctor.

It's good that you've gone veg - animal proteins are believed to contribute to stones."
