Can dog's be given Zantac to ease the pain of Pancreatitis? I was interested in the question, why can't dog's eat onion? whoever answered was very helpful and I wonder if they may be able to help me with my question. My dog is 12 years old a maltese/shitzu who suffered a bout of severe Pancreatitis 1 year ago. He has been on a low fat diet ever since. Kangaroo mince is perfect as it's so low in fat, he has it raw with a little boiling water. He does have veggies as well when i have spare. Thanks caz.
Crowfeather replied: "no ..dont do it"
ScienceTeacher replied: "No, many of the drugs that humans can take are not even partially tolerated by canines or felines."
Melissa A replied: "I would call and ask the vet. I know that dogs can't take things like Tylenol or any other OTC pain killers because they can be extremely toxic to them. Please ask a vet before giving any medications to your dog."
Can I give a dog with gerd (throwing up) zantac if tums don't work? Thanks!
Bonzie12 replied: "Not unless your vet told you how much and that it was ok."
moondog replied: "This is a question for your vet."
Kip's Mom *shoveling dog* replied: "Dog = non-human = does not take human medicine without a vet's okay."
Bonnie L replied: "Don't medicate your with anything unless you have the okay from your vet. Take the dog in for a checkup."
adam_gray_wilkinson replied: "the best thing to give your pet for vomiting/Emesis is childrens benedryl or tylenol 5 mg per lb. and check the food. if your feeding alpo STOP."
ScottieDog replied: "Check with your vet. When my dog (who passed away) was in kidney failure which caused severe stomach ulcers, I was told I could give her Pepcid. The dose was determined by her internal medicine vet. So you should check with a vet for the correct medication and dose based on the dog's weight. Please don't give any human medications without a vet's approval. It could be toxic to the dog. Trust me, you do not want to deal with kidney or liver failure--it is not pretty."
will it harm my dog to eat Zantac? she ate 4 tablets and I need to know if she could have damage from it?
Paigy replied: "make a quick call to your vet and ask"
hudsongray replied: "Found this online ----
Studies in dogs receiving dosages of Zantac in excess of 225 mg/kg/day have shown muscular tremors, vomiting, and rapid respiration. Single oral doses of 1,000 mg/kg in mice and rats were not lethal. Intravenous LD50 values in mice and rats were 77 and 83 mg/kg, respectively.

I'd take it seriously and phone a vet."
just peachy replied: "Call the vet!"
mee replied: "call the vet"
Eno replied: "take your dog to the vet. do not phone. put your dog in the car and go now."
Has anyone ever used PetAlive Digestive Support by Native remedies on their dogs? My dog suffers from gastritis. I took her in two vets and they recommended PetAlive Digestive support. Zantac (ranitidine) didn't work for her.
Has anyone had positive experiences using PetAlive Digestive support on their dogs?
andie replied: "i haven't used the petalive digestive support, however i have used native remedies products. they are good.
ranitidine never worked for my dog. we use famotadine."
How do I feed a dog with pancreatits? The vet suggested a ratio of 1-1-1 lean protein-starch-veggie.
I was working my way up to that since his tummy is still on the mend. We started with 1 Tbs if rice to 1/2 tsp of cottage cheese (As vet reccomended). He picked out the cottage cheese. Then, after a couple of days I introduced potato and lean beef. I cut the beef into small pieces and feed him small meals. He was keeping that down.... but he picks out the meat and leaves as much of the potato as he can. He threw up again tonight. He won't eat the gastro dog food.
He is currently on zantac and antibiotics. Going back to the vet tomorrow for blood work to make sure it is pancreatits. (Just speculation right now) Xrays and blood work done 3 weeks ago showed no kidney or liver failure nor tumors or foreign objects swallowed. No sign of parasites either. The blood work they did then didn't test for pancreatits (that one needs to be sent away) but he had responded to pancreatits treatment at the time.
I had done the withholding of food. Was told to not feed for 24 hours and then try again... If he threw up then withhold for another 24 hours. Since he threw up tonight, I will not feed again until we see the vet again. Chicken I know is lower protein, but poultry has always given him diarrhea.
Splitting Zantac 75? Oh, you're going to love this....
They took the dog off 1 med & 1 antibiotic, continued the fluid injections, and gave us a new antibiotic injection pack, and liquid belly-lube maalox-type med, and ZANTAC!
Have you SEEN these pills? They're TINY. And I need to split them into 10 equal parts. So far I've gotten a) CRUMBS, and b) SEVEN plus powder.
What do YOU suggest?
cyanne2ak replied: "I suggest that you ask the vet to give the prescription to a compounding pharmacy. I know of one in Birmingham, AL that has done things for me like that. They compound the medicine into the correct dose in a form easy to handle for both you AND the dog."
Serving Jesus replied: "Ok, Andi, here's what you do...
1) Crush the pill.
2) Disolve it in water.
3) Divide the water into ten equal parts.
4) Use a syrenge to make him drink it.
Hope that works!"
chetco replied: "You could call all your local pharmacists and explain the problem. I'm sure my Pharm would do it, so just keep calling till you get one that will.....Or you could crush your pill and divide it on a glass or mirror into ten parts. You'd have to make sure nobody saw you though......They would think you were cutting coke! lol"
BioGeek replied: "That is absurd. A vet should know better than to ask that of a client.
The best advice I can gve is this:
1) Call vet and complain and ask them to split or prescribe proper medication.
2) Have a compounding pharmacy make it in the proper dose. This will cost alot.
3) Find an alternative
RANITIDINE or ZANTAC comes in two doses. 75 MG available OTC at your supermarket, and the Prescription 150 MG. There are some specialty doses as well. For example a 25 MG easy dissolve tablet.
I am guessing you have the 150mg tablets, so your desired dose is 15 mg. You could take use the OTC 75 and split into quarters, roughly 19 mg each. But it will be far easier to split a tablet into 4 and not 10 parts.
On a side note: the crushing and mixing with water is not a good idea. The solution is not soluable in water and will coat your syrninge and you will be giving erratic doses.
Another note it is not suggested you split Zantac according to the manufacturer. Some medications are mixed well and contain the active ingriedient equally throughout, Others cannot assure that. Zantac may have different quantities of active drug throughout the tablet.
Your best bet to to clarify with yoru vet. It is unprofessional that they would send a client away to split ANY SIZE pill 10 times, much less a small one."
my dog isn't eating.? my dog has been throwing up A LOT lately. i took him to the vet and everything. i've been giving him human food like bread, baby food, rice, and we even give him gatorade for the dehydration that he has. he's really skinny and i can actually feel his ribs and spine and its very noticable. we give him mylanta, zantac, and other human medicines to get rid of the throwing up. i really need help so please give me answers!!!! im really desperate.
Samantha M replied: "thats exactly it,he's not eating DOG food, thats what he needs.
You can still give him human food like chicken or peices of hotdog, but he needs WATER and DOG FOOD.
also,DONT use human medicine
It's very irresponsible to be giving your dog HUMAN things.
You cant stand eating animal food for a long time,so how can an animal stand eating human food for a long time?"
B L replied: "You mention that you took your dog to the vet. What did your vet say or recommend. The vet will know more about what's going on with your dog, then us here who have not spent YEARS in medical school."
buzzword07 replied: "Everything you are doing is wrong. I can't believe if you took him to the vet that they would tell you to give him anything except boiled chicken or hamburg and cooked rice, and the mylanta and zantac ??
Get him to another vet before you kill him"
Jami W replied: "I don't want to alarm you, however when my dog was having these symptoms his kidneys were failing. I know you said you have taken your dog to the vet, however you may want to take him back. Gatorade is not good for dehydration in dogs, it has too much sugar. Also please stop giving him an array of human medications without asking your vet first, as some human medications are very bad for dogs."
mickey g replied: "did the vet give you a reason as to why he's throwing up? if not, go back to the vet and get some answers. did the vet advise you to give him human meds? cause that could be making the problem worse. you need to get some answers from someone who can actually look at the dog.
i would advise you to not give him gatorade. water is good enough. try sticking to a very bland diet, boiled chop meat and white rice. if he cant keep that down then you're going to need to put him on ivs most likely."
Tracey R replied: "I don't want or mean to scare you, but I just went through this with my puppy on Monday of this week. She quit eating and was having bad vomiting and diarrhea. She had lost about 5-7 pounds in 3 days. Plus, she wasn't very active, like normal. She was lethargic. I rushed her in Monday night and found out she had the parvovirus. Parvo can kill dogs if left untreated.
If your dog is under 3 years old and has these symptoms, you may want to ask your vet about a parvo test just to be sure. My vet ran the test for $30. The medicine/blood labs were the expensive part. Good news is that she is feeling a whole lot better and has perked up...so there is hope, but parvo works quickly and the vet told me that most puppies don't make it more than a week with the symptoms because they die of dehydration.
Good luck with your puppy!"
what happens when dogs eat human medicine by accident? My girlfriend's dog just ate some cold medicine, and zantac
Dog kept in animal hospital for 3 days, now he's home but is like a zombie, worried sick about him.? Our dog wasn't eating much & just sat in the same place, he just wasn't himself so we took him the vets who done every test under the sun including blood tests, xrays etc, they finally said he had an abscess & needed a tooth out, so they transferred him to hospital where he spent 3 days, he was given so many drugs and put on a drip for fluids & food, the vets then said they think something else is wrong so they done more tests again, they finally said they don't actually know whats wrongs with him but they sent him home anyway with a load more drugs, but since he is home he is even worse, he is like a zombie, swaying as he walks, he won't even move his head now he just lies there like he is permanently sedated and his appitite has now gone completely.
The drugs they gave us are...
Prednisolone - (steroid)
Zantac - (to stop getting ulcers from the steroid)
Carprogesic - (anti inflammatory)
Tramadol - (Pain Control)
Does he really need all these drugs?
We don't want to give him the steroid drug at all.
He is even worse than he was before, is it the drugs doing this to him? shall we stop the drugs all together? we don't want to take him back again it's cost over a thousand pounds just to have his tooth out and for the drugs he has been given.
We are begining to think they are taking us for a ride here, it's cost over 400 just for the tablets which they say he needs, even though they don't know whats wrongs with him.
So what i am asking is...
Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with our dog, is it the drugs or is this normal behaviour for a dog who has had him tooth out?
Does he really need all these drugs just for a tooth out?
Is he like a zombie because of the drugs, if so then should we stop giving him them since the vets don't know whats wrong with him anyway, we don't know why he needs them?
Thanks, sorry for the long question.
Ripp A replied: "I'd take my dog to see a canine internal medicine vet. Your vet can refer you to one. Please do not ask for medical advice from strangers. We are not vets, nor medical experts."
G.xi replied: "call 911 and hand it in"
claremont9 replied: "Poor little devil is probably getting over the trauma of it all and the drugs havent quite left his/her system. A bit of TLC and it should be fine. If the vet has given it drugs its for a reason but If you are worried take him back to the vets"
elliesmummy replied: "hi there all i can suggest is to ring another good vet and see if they say the same and if not question them .... get something done about itb thought and hope ur doggy is better soon!! =] x"
Jane R replied: "Teeth issues with dogs is actually very serious. It is sometimes more dangerous to remove the tooth than it would be to leave it in.
That being said I cannot see your dog to know exactly what is up.
My advice is to continue giving it the drugs for now but seek a second opinion immediately."
lost replied: "all these questions have to answered by your vet who cared for your dog you should be calling that vet right now or you need a second opinion on his condition get another vet to look at him it could the infection has spread throughout his entire body and this is going to continue to be expensive give him time to heal and if he needs more treatment then and you cant afford it then you may have to look at other options"
janey replied: "I would not stop the drugs the steriods should perk him up. The pain killers might be making him drousy. After having a tooth out he will be low. Just keep an eye on him . I hope he is better soon, I know how you feel they are part of the family."
Johnny Future US Marine officer replied: "1st call the vet and tell him but im positive he's fine put yourself in his shoes, alot of different things have happened to him and not to mention the different places he's been in. animals cant express themselves so this is his way of expressing his frustration, and pain from having his tooth pulled. your job is to be calm and make sure he is comfortable. pet him once in a while for reasurance and cmfort. whatever you do dont show him you are worried because they can sense. the drugs he's on is a definent factor in his behavior. hes problably stoned like a drug addict lol no but he'll be fine. email or comment my page to tell me how he's making out. GOOD LUCK!"
Vicki J replied: "Even if the vets don't know exactly what is wrong, they are trying to make him more comfortable. Do not stop giving him these meds. The Prednisone is suppose to help with his appetite, as well as other things. If you stop this medication, his appetite may not come back at all, and he would starve to death. I would give it another day or two and call the vet back and tell them what is going on with him. I'm sorry he is so sick, but please continue with what your vet has recommended to you. I would think it would be very normal for his mouth to be sore after having a tooth extracted, but don't change what your vet has prescribed for him. Best of luck to you, and I hope he feels better soon."
whatwouldiknow replied: "None of those drugs should make him like a zombie. The tramadol would make him a little drowsy but not out of it. He doesnt sound too good at all does he. You need to ring the vet again and tell them the state the dog is in. The vet should at least take another look at him without charge. He made his money so if he's halfway decent he will take another look for free. I hope the dog will be ok."
High on life. replied: "I think your dog might still be in shock - my dog was the same after he was put under anesthetic. They are probably putting him on all the drugs as sort of a process of elimination - it might cancel things out that could be wrong with him. If your not happy about all the drugs he is on, talk to your vet again. They might be needed, but if not i'm sure he would be happy to take him off them. Good Luck! x"
Laurie replied: "You need to call the vet and tell him/ her what exactly is happening with your dog. Ask if cutting down on the pain meds would help. Prednisolone promotes fast healing and shouldn't hurt him. I'm sure they gave the dog antibiotics before and during surgery to prevent infection. (ask) If you don't trust his advise, perhaps another vet should examine him with the test results from the first vet.( you paid for the tests so get a copy) Best wishes"
MamaB replied: "Tramadol my friend!! My b itch was put on this and yes, she went into a zombie state. Maybe it's okay for some dogs, but obviously it's far from okay, for some!! This most def. isn't a normal reaction to dental work - I've had them with far more than one tooth extracted and frankly once the anaesthetic had worn off (24 hours) they were back up and at it again, eating soft food for some time of course, but certainly not doing what your dog is apparently doing.
Second Opinion time here. These 'inconclusive' tests are the very worst. But this needs sorting out. Don't take him off what the vet has prescribed, but DO go back and have it out with them, or, go straight for a second opinion, taking all the information you have on what's gone on with you - and he can, and will, get the notes transferred across in any case.
Don't take no for an answer here - I know it's Saturday, but don't leave your poor dog like this. Hope you can sort this out!"
Orange replied: "Well, it sounds like your vet is trying to cover his bases by giving him these pills. Though I am very very surprised that they have not given him any anti-biotics seeing as he had an abscess in his mouth. Though they could have given him a long acting anti-biotic injection.
The steroids have been given to perk him up and to increase his appetite though this isn't normal treatment after the removal of a tooth due to an abscess. The anti inflammatories and pain control are definitely needed but often given in the same pill, something like Rimadyl.
Having teeth removed and mouth pain in general can often change a dogs personality for a bit as it's so uncomfortable. But yes tramadol does effect some dogs in this way, they should be changed if it's making him like this though.
Don't stop them as they are better than nothing but question your vet on the effects. You don't mention how long he has been home or how old he is. Age is a factor as the older he is the worse an infection can make him feel and the longer it'll take to get over it.
I would give him some nice tempting food, something soft so it doesn't hurt his mouth. Cut up some warm chicken into small pieces and mix it with some rice and maybe even a little gravy. Not many dogs could resist this.
Question your vet and ask about the antibiotics. An abscess is a huge infection and he really should be receiving some to help him fight the infection.
Always get a second opinion if you are unsure. You can ask for copies of all his test results and x rays to be sent to another vet, choose a surgery which is completely unrelated to yours. I know this means more money but it'll also give you piece of mind.
Good luck, I hope he feels better soon"
Kamaljot S replied: "He'll be fine in a few days !"
hotbeaglemama (menopause) replied: "I don't think he should be taking an anti inflammatory with the the steroid. It might be different in dogs but when I was being treated for carpal tunnel with steroids, they told me not to take my arthritis meds (anti inflammatory) I would not give the anti inflammatory without double checking with this vet AND getting a second opinion"
