did/does zoloft make you personally sleepy or more awake? I just took my first dose this morning and am so sleepy! But it is a kinda dark dreary day. How does it affect you? And do you think I should switch to taking it at night? I have a 5 month old to care for all day long, fortunately her daddy will be home from work in a few hours. I have read that for some it makes you sleepy and others more awake Im just concerned about bing able to care for my daughter

The Outsider replied: "sleepy"

Mon_10 replied: "Definitely sleepy.."

mommacat replied: "Not really sleepy but made me gain 25 pounds!! Went off of it and am using 5htp instead"

Cherokee Kid replied: "I doubt if it was the Zoloft that made you sleepy. I take mine in the morning and never experienced sleepyness. After taking it for 2-3 weeks I started to feel more awake during the days"

robynsbeauty replied: "Well its your first dose so its going to take a while to settle into your system. I personally have not had it but my boyfriend was on zoloft some years back and he went sleepy, to wide awake. Happy to depressed, lethargic to energised all the time. It never settled with him. You might settle quite easily after a few weeks. I hope your dose is small, its best to wean yourself onto these thing. You have to remember zoloft has an anxiety calmer so you will feel a bit doscile. Keep monitoring it and have regular check ups with your doctor. And remeber to excercise and have a regeime. A pill wont cure you, a recepie will though. Good luck. Even on the darkest of days the sun is still there waiting to shine again."

golamgam replied: "When I took it it did not do either for me. I doubt that the one and only pill you took had that effect on you already. Perhaps you are just tired with a baby to take care of. Try to take a nap when the baby naps."

holey moley replied: "You will adjust, just give it a couple of weeks. Antidepressants help a patient's sleep patterns which are disturbed by depression; either for falling asleep, or staying asleep at night. My doctor always recommends taking antidepressants in the morning. The people who have "increased energy" from an anti- depressant are typically the ones with the stimulation of hypomania or mania in bipolar disorder. This will happen if they aren't on a mood stabilizer in addition to the antidepressant."

taking zoloft makes me fuzzy & sleepy will it ever go away? I've been taking half of 25mg tablets Zoloft to start. every night since Monday. It's 11:30 in the morning and I'm still dazed and sleepy. I have so many things to do and zero energy. Caffinee isan't working food isan't working. I'm just dazed and fuzzy. Will this always be the case or is it just a adjustment period?

Lucky replied: "Caffeine only makes it worse..But you will have this adjustment period, but it should get better soon.I'd give it a month to 6 weeks and if you still are dragging around maybe the Dr. can put you on something else."

Den replied: "Be ready to switch, that may be the way that Zoloft is with you.All people are different and the only way to tell if ti works for you is to try it. In some ways, you are crash test dummy.Sorry to be so blunt, but you will see what I mean in a few years. Give it more than enough time,if it still makes you fuzzy, there is always Celexa and 12 others out there. More than ample time is 90 days, then kill it and change."

why does Zoloft+Risperdal make me sleepy? have been on 250mg Zoloft for OCD. Doctor added 1mg Risperdal (before going to bed), tried it once and the next day i couldn't stay up more than 4 hours. Went back to sleep again. is that normal? am <50kgs (underweight to be specific) Forgot to mention that i suffer from an anxiety disorder (obsessive compulsive disorder). been on Zoloft for 2 years. Have anyone been on Zoloft and Risperdal (combined) for anxiety disorder??? i would really like to know

Jon replied: "Zoloft and Paxil are both absolutely horrible for you. There are many other ways to solve your mental health problems without taking a pill but sadly, most doctors don't consider those options. I was on Paxil and it did the exact same thing. It put me to sleep. I remember sleeping for several hours in addition to a regular 8 hour night of sleep! As far as Zoloft, you should definitely read this: 1. Birth Defects 2. Sexual Side Effects 3. Suicide Not to mention if you should decide to stop, there is a high chance for WITHDRAWAL SYMTPOMS. Best of luck and I hope this helped you. Jon"

damnyoudemons replied: "Yes, it is normal. I was on Risperdal for several years and tried several different antidepressants (including Zoloft), and I was ALWAYS tired. Antipsychotics like Risperdal and most antidepressants carry a sleepiness effect, but the degree to which a person is affected varies. I would discuss your sleepiness with your doctor, as lethargy can be a very big incentive to stop taking the medication. Also, on a side note, if you choose to stay on Risperdal I can guarantee you will not remain underweight. Risperdal and similar antipsychotics make people pack on the pounds. As for the person who said that Risperdal has bad withdrawal effects, they vary from person to person and if done by a licensed professional, a person might not experience any withdrawal symptoms at all."

is it normal to be sleepy all of the time when taking zoloft? I started Zoloft about 5 days ago and have constantly felt like I only got 2 hours of sleep the night before. I am so tired that I can barely function or concentrate during the day. It is also making me slightly irritable. I was just wondering if this is a normal side effect and if it goes away after a while.

Jh replied: "This side effect should diminish within two weeks. The drug reaches it's maximum effectiveness within a month. Hang in there."

S H replied: "yes it goes away, good advice to hang in there. I've been on zoloft off and on for 8yrs, and now that I'm at full dosage, I've NEVER felt better in my entire life! I feel calm, smooth, I have my memory back, I don't have bad OCD anymore, no more panic attacks. And I don't feel ANY side affects... ;) peace"

thegirlstory replied: "Zoloft made me very depressed and suicidal, and tired and almost like I wasn't living. It may not be the same for everyone, but I'd suggest trying something else...but be careful! Relying on anything to make you happy, especially a pill, won't make you happy and usually will mess you up more than you were before."

Emily replied: "yeah i took it for like a month... i usually slept like 12 hours but on zoloft i slept like 18 hours a day.... i almost had to go to court because i missed so much school i felt like a drone"

Paul A replied: "when I first started taking Lexapro (I've been taking it for over a year and a half) the doctor had me taking it in the morning - and I was so drowsy all day I was afraid to even drive. The doctor had me switch it to night time (before bed) and that made a huge improvement - and I slept better, too."

jd replied: "Yes, it is normal to feel tired when you first start zoloft. I experienced the same thing for 3 - 4 weeks when I first started taking it. I was able to get thru the first several weeks, and I am glad I did. I can concentrate much better, my anxiety has lessened, and I feel great. Good luck."

Can Zoloft make you not care about ANYTHING? Recently diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, prescribed with Zoloft. Once I started upping my dosage (as I was told), I was sleepier and more careless than I used to be. I even began cutting classes, which is a bit out of character for me. I know it's almost summer, and the combination of that and my bad sleeping habits could be playing a role.... but is it possible/likely that Zoloft took away the healthy amount of anxiety I needed?

Do certain anti depressants make you more sleepy than others? I seem to be more tired and still don't sleep well. Is because I'm on zoloft?

dogloverdi replied: "Yes Zoloft can make you tired. I previously took Effexor SR 150mg. and it would make me tired. See if you Dr. will allow you to take your medications at night. I did that and it helped. Don't forget, depression also makes us tired, so the two combined does not help. I know from many years of fighting depression, it's a hard battle and my heart goes out to you. If you need to ask questions direct, I believe you can get me through this system. I find I can sleep better in the daytime better than at night, which I am sure that's another great feature of avoidance. Hope you start feeling better. Di"

casparin0324 replied: "yes"

hunster replied: "oh i think so..... talk to your doc"

leilablue3131 replied: "The anti depressants can have different reactions on the body. So yes some can make you more sleepy then others depending on your bodies chemical reaction to them."

citalopraming replied: "One of the common side effect of Zoloft is feeling sleepy and not sleeping well, I have never taken this Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor but the others that I have taken have caused me those type of side effects to start with, then over time say 3 - 6 months the effects slowly reduces. I have tried about four different types and each one has about the same effect."

unworthychild replied: "I am bipolar and I've been on almost every kind everything that's on the market. Every psycho drug I've ever been on has made me drowsy. I always felt like a dream. I don't take meds anymore, I read my bible instead."

billhwks replied: "There is more to it than one antidepressant. Most work better in a combination form. And yes some do make you more tired (sleepy) than others. But the best thing to do is to see if you doctor will give you a mood stabilizer to go along with your anti depressant. The two will help you sleep well or at least better than you are now."

Angela V replied: "I take 150 mg. of Zoloft everyday for 2 years. Yes,it can make you sleepy. Prior to that, I was taking 100 mg. of Effexor XR and it had just the opposite effect, it made me wired throughout the day, and I had to take Ativan constantly. You didn't mention how long you had been on Zoloft, when I first started it, I went straight from the Effexor to 50mg. of Zoloft for a week, then 100 mg. for months, then doc increased it to 150mg., so I have been on 150mg. for about 11/2 years. When I was on Effexor, I still was having panic attacks and anxiety a lot, Zoloft works much better for me, and I finally found the dosage I need to maintain. I talked my friend into changing from Paxil to 50 mg. of Zoloft about 8 months ago and her anxiety is also much better. Hang in there, usually the sleepiness gets better after about 4-6 weeks when you adjust to it. Good luck to you, hope you feel better!"

I have been dizzy and sleepy and recently came off of Zoloft. Can that be related? It's like I'm drained. I have a hard time waking up and feel dizzy, not all the time, but bad enough I wouldn't want to jog anywhere. I took Buspar at one time and it almost feels like I'm back ON that, but I'm not taking anything now. Will it pass? Is it related? I've had no sinus or ear problems either.

Sirenbhd79 replied: "I would think that it was definitely related to coming off the Zoloft. I have heard that you shouldn't just stop taking medications like that, you should wean yourself off of them. You might want to contact your doc if the problem persists or gets worse. Hope you get to feeling better!"

Lexapro Vs Zoloft antidepressants why do doctors these things? My wifes doctor just changed her from Lexapro to Zoloft what is the Differences. I dont think it will make any differences because she doesnt seam to take them every day. How will not taking it everyday affect her. She is recovering from a sleeping pill addiction. Can Zoloft make you sleepy if you take more than proscribed? When doctor start changing pill it makes me nerves but I know they know best most of the time Just looking for a little advise.

dali333 replied: "lexapro didnt work for me but zoloft does. there are small differences in the various SSRIs so, sometimes it s a trial and error thing to find the one that works best. your wife should be taking her pill daily as prescribed, and yes too much can make you sleepy..that is, if her dosage is too high.im not sure about taking to much at one just one point. these meds arent good to mess with, i know that. if she dosent take th pill everyday she will not realize the full effect. get a daily pill box for her and help her to remember to take it everyday."

lucy02 replied: "I take lexapro but I've never taken Zoloft. A good website for you to look at would be depressionforums.org. They have forums for zoloft and lexapro and I even saw a discussion from someone who had switched from lexapro to zoloft. I don't blame you for being concerned. Sometimes switching can be a big deal"

PsychPrincess replied: "Lexapro and Zoloft are both SSRI's which are used when a person is "lacking" a chemical in the body. Doctors will change medications and dosages based on the patient's reactions to them. It's called "titration." An effective doctor will ask your wife questions and see if she has changed being on the meds. Sometimes it may be too high of a dose and it needs to be lowered or there is no change. I wouldnt be concerned unless the doctor keeps switching medications, or if your wife is asking for a switch alot. It takes some time to work in your system, so give it a chance. Zoloft is best taken in the morning, as it can be considered a stimulant. Zoloft is not habit forming, however it takes at least 6 weeks to get into your system regularly so its recommended to take it at the same time everyday for maximum benefit."

mary b replied: "if you take pills at access , it will make you sleepy. She might not take some everyday as she is banking them to take more at a time. I would call her doctor and tell him what you have been noticing , he will be best placed to answer you. Zoloft made me real sleepy... I am now on Effexor and I feel much better. Good luck , you have alot on your hands."

Jess replied: "If she isn't taking it properly, she almost might as well not be taking it at all. The only way antidepressants work is by being taken consistently. It took me a long time to learn this lesson and until I did, stability was impossible. People respond differently to SSRI's...it can cause fatigue, insomnia, or not effect a person in that way at all. But the SSRI's don't usually work anything like a sleeping pill. Some of the older antidepressants, called tricyclics, can knock you out cold. But the newer ones don't generally have that kind of effect. Both meds are SSRI's, so both target mainly serotonin in some way. The difference is in the chemical makeup of each...I must admit I do not know the specifics. I have been on both of them though and I think I did better (less side effects) with Zoloft than on Lexapro."

I_Love_McRedneck replied: "If she doesn't take her meds every day, she might as well not take them ever. You need to step up and make sure she's getting the meds she needs. You can go to for info on the differences in meds."

does sulfamethoxazole/triath. and zoloft makes you sleepy or one of them does?? does sulfamethoxazole/triath. make you sleepy?

Tenn Gal replied: "Yes, either one can make you sleepy. Taken together could be worse. Maybe taking them at different times would help you not be so sleepy. One is an antibiotic(Septra) and the other one being for depression I take 100 mg of Zoloft which I take at bedtime and it does not make me sleepy or drowsy. Everyone is different. Go to and click on drugs."

Zoloft making me sleepy? I've been taking Zoloft for maybe 7 months now. Just recently, I've been feeling really, really tired. I used to go to bed around 11:00, now I can't stay up past 7:00. All through the day I feel tired and weak. Help? I take 100mg every day for severe depression and OCD. I'm 14.
