Zoloft Wine Posts in Q&A
Is it okay to combine Zoloft and wine? I just began taking 50 mg of zoloft due to sleeping/stress problems, is it ok to have a daily glass of wine still?

LadyLynn replied: "If it says on the bottle not to drink alcohol, then of course, don't. If it doesn't say that, just drink the wine very slowly. It can cause the wine to really have a strong effect. So be sure to take it easy. If you're on any other meds, call your pharmacist. :)"

FREUDETTE replied: "A daily glass of wine is problably gonna benefit you MORE than the Zoloft can ever! I have taken every anti-depressent known - and some, not known, why do you need this drug? you should double check with doctor and see if you need a anxiety drug (buspar, ativan, xanax) instead as it took me YEARS to figure it was what I needed, and no, a glass shouldnt hurt at all! good luck!"

I have been taking Zoloft for a year for severe panic attacks. I drink 1.5 bottle of wine a night.? I want to stop taking zoloft but fear the panic attacks will return. I was also wondering what the affects of all the alcohol and the zoloft. Thanks.

Sahara replied: "Your best bet is to speak with a pharmacist. I don't think it's a good idea to mix alcohol with Zoloft. Alcohol is a depressant. Do you have the information sheet about Zoloft? Some pharmacies (maybe all do) give patients an information sheet about Zoloft but since you've been on it for a while, you may not have gotten it recently. You should speak with a pharmacist and your doctor. If you do want to get off Zoloft then you may need to do it gradually and not cold turkey. Please speak with your doctor."

LDB449 replied: "Your not supposed to drink while taking Zoloft."

DR V replied: ""The manufacturers of Zoloft do not recommend drinking alcohol while on the medication. Alcohol and Zoloft act upon similar chemicals in the brain, which means that Zoloft could intensify the effects of the alcohol. If a person chooses to drink alcohol while on Zoloft, he or she should only consume light to moderate amounts of alcohol. If you do drink alcohol on Zoloft, do not drink alcoholic beverages at the same time you take your dose of the medication." Your alcohol consumption is above what is considered moderate. It in itself might contribute to your panic attacks. If you go off of Zoloft, the panic attacks may return. Alcohol is not helpful at keeping away panic. If you can cut back your alcohol to 1/3 the amount (I know that sounds like a lot), and continue on the Zoloft, that might be a much better way to continue. Certainly, talk with your doctor before trying to taper off of the Zoloft. Be well."

mercy replied: "I used to have friends who used Zoloft and I don't wanna seem judgmental because everyones experiences are different but i don't believe that anti depressants cure you, they tend to make you worse. Your dosage can start from 25mg, to 50 and gradually increase where to a point your body becomes so dependent on it, it'll have no effects on you anymore. I have tried Zoloft myself for a few months and they made me worse. I tried another anti depressant (can't remember the name now) and they were great for the first few weeks i was on a high CONSTANTLY to a point where i lost 10kg and i hated it). Anyway I'm very much against anti-depressants because as any drug they damage your internal organs gradually and i would find different ways to manage your anxiety. And as for the Zoloft and alcohol mixture = BIG NO NO! Good luck :-)"

momof3&luvinit replied: "You shouldnt drink at all with any anti- depressent. I know people do it, but it could cause you to put yourself in a panic state. It can cause meaness.I was n meds. too, and when I drank on top of them I was a total Bi*c#"

Dore13 replied: "that is not good at all. That is very dangerous in fact. Are you drinking to try to stop the attacks? You need to cut down and get a handle on the situation. I took meds for panic attacks, but my body adjusted to them and the attacks got worse. So I read a book called "Don't Panic", and did the breathing exercises and meditations suggested. Now I do not have them. I suggest you do the same."

duatxorione replied: "Hi! I came about your question and wanted you to know that I too have suffered from panic attacks, for months... they were terrible. But I got out of it. Is it ok to occasionally have just a small glass or two of wine while taking Zoloft? Perhaps just once a week?

erica a replied: "Its ok just dont get crazy(er) jk"

teddybearleogirl replied: "yeah i use to. im not on that med nomore."

kacsspock1221 replied: "yes it is ok, but in moderation. dont get smashed."

forbidden_planet replied: "As long as you are responsible and only have a drink or two every now and then, you shouldn't have any problems chemically. You definetly shouldn't binge drink, or drink every day. You have to make sure to keep your blood levels of medication at the right place. Also, there might be negative side-effects of heavy drinking with the meds, like kidney or liver problems. If you are taking Zoloft because of depression, however, you should probably avoid alcohol since drinking can exacerbate the symptoms of depression."

rrmorris45 replied: "yes, but warning if you get drunk it will be the most intense high of your life (not that I recommend it, but it is incredible.)"

one hot mamma replied: "i hope so, because i do"

Sharon H replied: "It's not a good idea..."the concomitant use of sertraline (Zoloft) and alcohol in depressed patients has not been studied and is not recommended. ""

I drank half a bottle of white wine today. I also take Zoloft (150mg) daily and a low dosage of metropolol,? which is a heart med. Could this be harmful? I should've thought this out first. But I ate a bunch of bread before drinking and I drank the bottle over about 6 hours' time, not quickly.

Has anyone's doctor ever said it was okay to have the odd glass of wine while taking zoloft? I was prescribed zoloft (30mg) today by my doc for post partum depression. I intend to let the medication take it's course, but was wondering if in a month or so it would be okay to have the odd glass of wine? Has anyone's doc given them the okay? I appreciate your concern, Jerry, but you have no idea how old my baby is, how depressed I am, what I have tried prior to finally deciding to go on antidepressants, nor what my profession is. Please be cautious about telling people to discontinue doctor recommended treatment before knowing all the facts. I am aware that drinking alcohol with certain medications (well most) comes with risks, I am curious if anyone's prescribing doctor believes that these are reasonable risks. Thanks again for your concern.

I ate a bunch of bread before drinking and I drank the bottle over about 6 hours' time, not quickly, if that helps. I haven't drunk in about a year, I wanted some sweet wine...

halfmex2 replied: "dont know but ur heart rate might be very high"

serina replied: "It's never good to drink while on medication."

sunset replied: "Call your pharmacist and ask them - they're the experts."

Grant M replied: "I answered this yesterday and here it is again mmmmmmmmmmmmmm drinking anything with alcohol in it is not good when taking blood pressure or heart medicine...I think even a loaf of bread would not absorb the wine... I do hope you did not get sick... Happy Easter my sweet friend.... ((((((((((((((((hug))))))))))))))) Grant M"

i am on a combination of zoloft and xanax and was wondering if it would be ok to have a few wine coolers? just like 2 or 3?

zoloft anti anxiety, can you still drink whilst on this medication? ive been taking zonoloft and like with many perscription drugs it reccomends not drinkging any alcohol. i have a dinner tonight and was wondering if one or two glasses of wine no more would be allowed and not have side effects?

Christy SD Nurse replied: "An occasional drink is not going to hurt you."

k G replied: "I would advise against constantly getting smashed. Zoloft isn't the strongest anti-depressant. If anything it would merely make you tired. Im on much stronger medications and can moderately drink. Of course, all things affect people differently."

Mr.B replied: "One or two drinks should be ok, but avoiding drinking too much. Alcohol is a depressant, Zoloft is an anti-depressant, so the alcohol may reduce or eliminate the positive effects of the Zoloft."

rule62 replied: "I don't know about Zoloft particularly, but some antidepressants have an augmentive effect on alcohol. An anti-anxiety med is meant to calm you down, and alcohol is a depressant, so be careful about the two. If you're really talking about one glass or two, and someone else is driving, it should be ok."

Question about zoloft? Are you aloud to have a few glasses of wine while taking zoloft? My husband and I like to go out to dinner and have a few glasses of wine,it says on the bottle may cause drowsiness, Has anyone had any side effects from drinking with this?

xray749@verizon.net replied: "No I haven't but I know that you're not supposed to have alcohol while you're taking it. It is has something to do with your liver enzymes"

colorofmoneyy replied: "well, any kind of medication that you get from your doctor doesn't act well with alcohol. but i mean, as long as you don't drink like a sailor you should be fine. i'm glad to see people who actually care about medication and alcohol. don't worry too much, i mean as long as you..dont drive a tractor you'll be fine! :)"

I take 3 seroquel at night 25(mg I think) and 1 Sertroline(Zoloft) in the morning along with one seroquel? I didn't take my medication last night because i had 2 glasses of wine and i fell asleep without it. Then this morning i felt great and i went rollerblading and i was laughing and i felt super. Now as the day progresses it is 3 now i'm starting to get a massive headache, I want to know if I can take tylenol and next how do i wean off this stuff, i felt so good in the morning but now i feel awful.

Andy J replied: "You can definitely take tylenol or advil. I would suggest talking to your Dr to determine the best way to titrate (wean) your way down with minimal side effects. I am glad you were able to feel good for a while without your medicine! Sounds like it is just the effects of not taking the medicine are bothering you and not the condition you started taking it for! Congrats and good luck!"
